  1. This company posted on my rescue page last week. I think this is a great idea :) They also have collars, etc, for deaf and blind dogs which I'm hoping to get shortly. http://www.thecannycaninesa.com Lots of people tie pooh bags to their leash, so oftentimes people are used to seeing something tied on the leash. If they don't notice the yellow ribbon or don't know what it means it's not much use really, the owner will still have to explain. I like the Canny Canine idea, the collar, harness and lead all say exactly what you want people to know :)
  2. Agree with all this ^^ I have multiple dogs here as I also run a small rescue, all the dogs have food with no preservatives or additives. They don't have toxins coming out through their skin, so no 'doggy smell' :) Bedding and blankies are washed at least once a week, floors are mopped every day or two. Even though my fabric lounge suite was cleaned regularly, it's a fave place for the dogs to chill, so I gave it away and bought a second hand faux leather lounge from Gumtree. There were carpets here when I first moved in but I've replaced them with lino. Much easier to keep clean especially with new, usually un-housetrained dogs coming in I also use scented candles, not so much to hide any smells but because I love them and love having a gentle scent in the air. I've been pleasantly surprised when people come to visit and mention that there's no doggy smell :)
  3. I have the mobile numbers for the RSPCA SA Chief Inspector and the Deputy Chief Inspector if you'd like to contact them directly. Just ring, email or PM me. xx
  4. They are a pair of sweeties, I havent seen them with other dogs. Be warned though, the shelter girls are very possessive of their Chi's so it would be highly unlikely that they would allow them to travel interstate. You may just have to admire them from afar  Completely understandable, once my bubs are here they don't go interstate either (in fact they're not rehomed more than about an hour away  ). I'm sure someone will fall in love with them as many have here, I'm very glad that they're safe until they find their forever home :) Awww, thanks tdierikx What a lovely thing to say MUP, thank you That's right DD, if these bubs are safe then I can concentrate on the one's that really need me. Can't help looking and falling in love with them in the meantime though :) Bottom line is that they're obviously in great hands with the girls at RSPCA and will be safe until they can find them a great home together. And no, you can't send your norty dogs to me  xxx
  5. I'm in SA, let me know if I can help in any way. RSPCA SA are VERY hard to work with. I'm happy to help Jane and Iggy Rescue in any way I can. The dogs couldn't come here though as I already have 7 here but if I can help in any other way please let me know. Jo xx
  6. Oh. My. God. I'm not 'supposed' to be taking in more than one at the moment due to some health issues, but seriously Oh My God, I've just died of love :p . I've just put my name on a little one-eyed senior boy but if he falls through then I'll take another look at these two. Any idea if they get on with other dogs? (and LOL Mixeduppup  )
  7. You have a kind heart Missymoo, the seniors get to me too. xx Is this dog safe with rescue? Is there a link? Oh, that's classic Cowanbree  . Actually spat a bit of my coffee out!
  8. She's still a 'work in progress' Wobbly, some slight improvements over the last few days though which is encouraging. Still getting some wees inside overnight but I'm not sure who's doing it. I've tried a few times to start leaving the dogs on their own but poor Teddy, the senior blind boy who was howling on the tape, just can't cope if someone isn't at home with him and once he realises he's alone he starts crying and howling, which of course sets the other dogs off. I'm trying not to take in any new rescues at the moment, I say 'trying' because I couldn't say no to a frightened little crestie boy a couple of weeks ago, but that's the only new one I've taken in. The adoptable bubs have either gone to new homes or are in the process of it, and I've been able to find an awesome permanent foster-home for one of our little unadoptable oldies who had a bit of an issue with Daisy and was consequently hampering Daisy's progress a bit. We're getting there and I realise that I need to concentrate on getting the dogs who have been traumatised sorted before taking in any more rescues, which is such a shame. I'm trying very hard to say no to new bubs but it's soooo hard
  9. You're right Mrs RB, any money that's donated goes to the rescue dogs. I'll bet you ten bucks that someone would nick the Staffy anyway
  10. Do you have a link at all Lollipup? Sorry! This is the first one we bought that turns 360 degrees - http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-GEN-WIRELESS-WEBCAM-IP-CAMERA-AUDIO-VIDEO-WIFI-CAMERA-OSD-IR-Motion-Detction-/160723377312?pt=PCA_Video_Conferencing_Webcams&hash=item256bdc1ca0 This is the set of two we bought afterwards - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/300679965514?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Brilliant! Thank you Lollipup. I can't even imagine how scared they must have been Cody. I had to take one of the dogs to the emergency vet at 3am on Sunday. I was gone for about two hours and the dogs stressed massively while I was gone and peed through the whole house especially at the doors. The little one with OCD has regressed quite badly and several of the other dogs are now very reactive to any noises. I had a look at their 'skinflint' page Mrs RB. Looks like the only thing I could afford (and even that would be a stretch) would be a second hand Rooster! I have other words too Scootaloo ... and a bat at the ready.
  11. We're all good thanks Kadbury :) I have a friend looking into some security options for me. I got some quotes on a roller door, but hoo boy, the cheapest quote I could get for a zincaloom, manual operating door was over $700!! ... actually I got him down to $680, but it's still not very do-able. I have a friend dog-sitting for me this afternoon while I go to the doctors and pick up dog some supplies today. Thank you so much for ordering the cameras! That's really so very nice of you :) I'm hoping to budget for some 'real' ones soon too, as well as some sensor lights. With your cameras up there as well, hopefully the next cretin who comes along will think twice before coming in. I'll let you know when they get here :) xx
  12. You're spot on MBS. In reality I already have dogs that will bark if there's an intruder, and until I can arrange some better security, either I'll be home or they'll have a dog-sitter, so someone will be alerted if there's a stranger in the area. I don't need a large dog with a bigger bark just to let me know that someone is here. That also increases the risk of a neighbour being annoyed by a bigger, louder bark and I can't risk that. As you said, my priority is the little ones that are here and although it was nice to think about having a big dog again for a while, it's not going to solve any of the issues that have been created by the moron who came into my yard. I'm looking into security to attend to that as I do think that's the better way to go.
  13. I agree 100% Megan! I think it was worth having a think about but in reality any dog that comes here is part of the family. My job is to look after them and keep them safe, not the other way around. I'm not comfortable with adding another dog purely for 'protection'. I can't risk a barker MUP as I'd lose my rescue dogs if there were any complaints. Can you train a dog not to take bait? Maybe one Labradork ... ten, not so much :)
  14. Speaking as one of the supervisors.. lol.. I don't think the idea of adding a big dog to the crew is necessarily a bad idea but there are a lot of side issues that come with it. Things such as bigger bills (food, vet care etc) that would mean less money for the rescues (which I can't see being acceptable to you), exercise requirements when you have chronic fatigue and the risk of accidental injury to the little ones, especially the deaf, blind and slow (which realistically covers nearly all of them ). In theory though I would love to see you with a big dog in the house after all the dodgy things that have gone on. I know I'd worry less, that's for sure. :) ETA: I think it's hilarious that you admitted to everyone on DOL that you have supervisors. I think way more people in rescue should have supervision! . You guys help keep me grounded and remind me that I can't say yes to every senior dog that's in the pound. The energy side of things you mentioned is exactly why I stick with the littlies and oldies, it's the main reason I don't have anything bigger that would need more exercise. See, that's why I need supervision, to remind me of stuff like that  No, it wouldn't be a tax deduction ash. Aww, dear little Louis Good old Frosty :)
  15. I was about to reply that no I'm not serious about getting a big dog ... but then for some reason while I was doing the dogs' ointments, I started thinking about it ... *shakes fist at Ash* I wanna big doggy now! Yellowgirl, it's really not a silly idea, especially as you live alone. Even physcologically they give you a wonderful feeling of security. My husband works away most weeks, and we live rurally with no close neighbours, but I never, ever, feel scared (well, until I listened to your video last night, that was ) with my big dogs around. Even before we had so many large dogs, just having my German Shepherd lying on the end of the bed made me sleep without worry. You may even find the littlies feel more secure with a large dog (have no idea about this, just a wild guess, perhaps some dog behaviouralists could confirm or deny.) I'm actually a 'big dog person' at heart, I've always had Shepherds or big crosses of them, the bigger the better. Then one day I realised that the little poodle puppy that I acquired was actually a whole bunch of love in a little body ..lol. Then I got my first Chinese Crested ... and that was pretty much it, I was a gonner for the littlies  I have two friends who act as my 'adult supervision' when it comes to my rescue dogs (ie. being able to say no because I'm full, have no funds, have enough on my plate, etc). I can't even imagine their reaction when they see this one!
  16. I was about to reply that no I'm not serious about getting a big dog ... but then for some reason while I was doing the dogs' ointments, I started thinking about it ... *shakes fist at Ash* I wanna big doggy now!
  17. ..but she'd give him a nasty suck!! Oh, that one did make me laugh Pers! I'm glad she didn't touch the maggoty cretin at all though, I'd have to have disinfected her in case she caught something. Thanks so much for your input Corvus, much appreciated, and yes it does help. xx
  18. That's the worry ellz, we're dealing with a total moron here. I hope so FF. Made a police report yesterday, in the process of talking to the neighbours and working on getting some extra $$ to get some security stuff organised. Really? We're back to the koala now?? I thought mine would have kept barking too Ash, even if they had run off a ways, but I really think this moron scared the absolute sh!t out of them and they went totally quiet rather than risk anything else happening. Most of the dogs here have previously had pretty crappy experiences with humans. The unfortunate thing is that if he'd got stuck or something, the only one who was brave enough to stay nearby and keep barking at him was Daisy ... and she has no teeth! You know if I get a big guard dog I'll need a bigger doggy door? lol
  19. Oh, your poor little boy zeebie Glad you've found a management program for him. They definitely do stress more when there is stress in the household too. I've also put her on Vital Greens phyto-nutrient powder Aphra http://www.chemistdirect.com.au/vital-greens-300g?utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=ppc&utm_term=vital%20greens%20300g&gclid=CJ_cxIXtubMCFQYipQod7B0AYA All the dogs have a fish oil/omega supplement every day. They really do help zeebie, I combine them with a Glucosamine/Chondroitin powder as well and it really helps the oldies with joint or arthritis issues.
  20. I came to that conclusion too  Well, I replayed it right before going to bed a few times. I dreampt about trying to decipher the background voices. Oh dear! Sorry about that Aphelion, did you happen to come up with anything though? I'd love for someone to decipher the whispering. OMG Aidan!! Persephone posted a warning about that early on Tara
  21. I always used to get a friend or family member to dog-sit for me when I was out, but that was mainly to keep an eye on them when new dogs were added to the mix. Now that this has happened I won't be leaving them alone again and will make sure that someone is always here. I came to that conclusion too  You know you want to. Do it with a friend there and scare the crap out of them at the same time  Just answered in the last post Aussie. agree. I think, YG you should sell it as a sound effect for movies !! It may be something very simple ... and it's only a recording ...but it really did put the hairs up on the back of my neck, and set the heart racing ..and had me jumpy . It had a bad feel to it. I think it had a bad feel to it because the person doing it is a bad person. I nearly wet my pants when I first heard it Aww, poor kitty.
  22. Sorry for the delay in replying. I have a Chronic Fatigue condition (and a couple of other annoying issues thrown in for good measure) so I get tired quite easily. I've just had a lovely and much needed 14 hour sleep :) Snook, who was kind enough to dog-sit for me yesterday while I took two bubs to the vet, has answered a few questions already. Thanks Snook :) I'd be interested in someone else listening to it Rev Jo. I'd particularly like to find someone with one of those contraptions that separates sounds, bit hard I think though when the original recording is on a cassette tape from the 90's. I think you're spot on Kirislin. I like the sign idea too :) I had a bit of trouble a few years ago with my ex husband Jules. I was so busy protecting the dogs and taking them with me everywhere that I forgot that he still had a key to the house. After coming home to a rather empty house I changed the locks that day and borrowed some furniture to make do. I didn't care about the furniture, he was gone, the dogs were safe, and that's all that mattered to me :) I agree poochmad, it was an idiot, possibly someone off their head. The one accessible fence is 5ft high with a bin on the outside and a kennel on the other side. I basically just gave them a stepladder to get over the fence I moved a year ago poochmad. In my other place, I seemed to be a magnet for people who needed help and the mentally ill. Slight problem with the move to this place is that I swapped Housing Trust houses with an alcoholic lady who was quite a bother in the first few months. After her last episode of coming to my house when my dad was here dog-sitting, I reported it to the police and let her know that I would keep doing that each time she turned up (I probably shouldn't have, but I also let her know that if I was here when she turned up that I would take care of her myself). Haven't had any issues since. Oh, and I just heard from a neighbour yesterday that she's moved interstate now, so yay for that one. I would LOVE to be able to zap the hell out of them BlackJaq! I would also love to be able to watch it  Your poor horses Gawd there are some real arses out there... glad they got zapped. Join the club CHA. That's the bit that makes me sooooo mad, they've traumatised quite a few of the dogs here. Lots of little things make sense now that I know someone frightened them like that. I hate that I wasn't able to protect them as they're supposed to be finally safe from humans when they come here Still quite a few wees in the house Bianca, Daisy's OCD is still pretty bad (increased noticeably on Friday night), Bobby, Daisy and Maddie are all very reactive to any noises. Snook said that George was pacing constantly and going in and out the whole time I was gone. I explained the situation to the police officer and played the tape. I tried not to make too big a deal out of it and make myself look like the crazy dog lady who records random neighbourhood noises ..lol. The officer was fairly impressed with the noise and agreed that it was a man, probably there with the intention of casing the place and maybe trying to get through the doggy door but was presented with a bunch of barking dogs and decided to yell at them before leaving. I've made an incident report, that's about all I can do. That's exactly what I think happened too Jed. See above poochmad.
