Pomeranian Having Trouble Breathing
yellowgirl replied to yellowgirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
His heart is really good gillbear. xx -
Hi everyone, We had a very badly neglected Pomeranian boy come into care about two weeks ago. At the time he had a nasal infection and was put on Clavulox antibiotics. After 10 days with no improvement we had a nasal swab done. It came back as nothing particularly serious but was resistant to Clavulox, so he's been on Baytril since Tuesday, as well as Mucodyne tablets to help break down the mucous. I've also bought a vaporiser and had that going 24/7 for the past 4 days. He was at the emergency vet in the early hours of Tuesday morning after really struggling to breathe and having two seizures. There wasn't much they could do except give him an anti inflammatory injection which didn't make much difference anyway. His breathing is worse at night time, he really struggles for breath and has been having at least one seizure a night. I thought at first that it was when he closed his mouth that his nose being blocked didn't allow him to get enough oxygen, but even when I hold him upright so his mouth is open, he still struggles for breath. He has had a little bit of discharge from his nose and last night he was snoring a bit and breathing through his nose to some degree but still struggled all night and also had 2 seizures The vet thinks it's all due to his nose being blocked but I think there has to be something else going on here. Our last foster had a really bad nasal infection but had no trouble sleeping and the Baytril knocked it on the head after about 2 days (she'd also had a nasal swab after the Clavulox hadn't worked and she actually had a pretty serious infection). Does anyone have any ideas or advice? This little guy is just breaking my heart and I can't stand to see him like this. There should have been some improvement by now if it was just a blocked nose, surely? I want to take him to the vet first thing on Monday, does anyone have any ideas of what else can be done for him? Does it sound like more than just a blocked nose to you? If so, what else could we be looking at and what do I need to ask my vet on Monday? Not sure if this is related but he was malnourished when he came in and still has trouble using his front left leg properly. He's on Nutro puppy tinned and dry food (all natural, no preservatives), he has additional omega and vitamin E oils as well as Nutrigel with each meal. The steam you can see is from the vaporiser. You can also see discharge from his nose, so it can't be completely blocked. This video shows the trouble he has drinking. He's okay when he eats though. Don't worry about watching it to the end, I was trying to get close up to see if he had any discharge from his nose. Could he have issues with his sinus, throat or palate? It was very hard for the vets to do a proper examination as Chester was very snarly during the examinations and the best we could work out was that he had two teeth! edited to add that he also has a short and misaligned bottom jaw. Also that he's on puppy food at the moment for the extra nutrients but he's actually a senior boy and would be at least 10 years of age. There's more information on Chester on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/LittleLegsDogRescue

Thank you for the photos! They all look wonderful :D Very glad to hear that little Bazza is on the mend, gosh he's got beautiful colouring. All the pups look really happy and healthy and Narla has improved so much from the sad, skinny girl she was a few weeks ago. You're doing a wonderful job Cheryl There's a little something in your vet account for your precious charges with love from us at LLDR
-
I hope little Bazza is doing okay, the poor little mite. Cheryl, could you send me a PM or an email ([email protected]) please with your vet's details so I can make a donation for your darling mum and bubs with the proceeds from our recent fundraiser. Is your vet okay with a credit card donation to your account over the phone? The fundraiser went pretty well and we sold five of the eight scarves plus another one after it closed but I still want to raise more money for my little group of needies so I'll put my thinking cap on :) Jo xx

Thank you for everything you've done for this precious little family Cheryl I've added Narla to our Project 'Special Dogs' on our website http://www.littlelegsdogrescue.com.au/project-special-dogs.html and we currently have a fundraiser going for this particular project here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.423678441081444.1073741847.125509400898351&type=1 If anyone is interested in bidding you're most welcome to join in :) If you have the winning bid you can nominate that your donation goes to Narla (and you get a gorgeous scarf! :D ) Jo xx

Have made a donation to RADAR's account and have added Gnarla to our fundraising page (I hope that's okay, let me know if there's any problem) http://www.littlelegsdogrescue.com.au/fundraiser-for-project-senior-team.html Hope we can help this precious mum and her babies with more donations very soon. xxx

Dogs Who Visit Hospitals And Nursing Homes

Yep, I'm in awe - LOL. Looks a fabulous set up, YG Cheers girls :) I'm really lucky to have this room, I have no idea where I'd put everything otherwise!

Crazy Dog Lady is in da house ...lol! Here's my 'dog room' :) The dogs can come in here if they want to (there are plenty of other beds in other rooms :) ), it's mostly set up so I have everything in one place . We go through lots of blankets and jumpers in winter - all the bedding gets changed at least once a week and the cresties have a clean shirt or jumper each day. I generally have around 10 dogs here so we go through quite a lot of blankets and jumpers in the colder weather. I love having heaps of snuggly blankets in the beds for them when it's chilly :) I have a 'memory shelf' on top of the white bookcase as well.

Thanks Tambaqui. Glad that they have two back already, but four still missing - I would be going out of my mind Their poor owners I hope the bubs aren't too scared, cresties can be tricky to catch when they're scared and on the run. I just hope they're all back home safe and sound soon.

Any updates? Have any of them been found? Poor babies, they'd be so scared

And there is this life for foxes who are unable to tolerate people. What is it that makes us want to do this, to keep a wild animal in a cage for the rest of its life because we humans think it's cute and we want to keep it? Why do we have this need to own and possess creatures that weren't designed to be kept in captivity? For me, the bolded bit is the saddest part. I hardly think that living a life like that is going to make the fox 'happiest'.

I imagine it's because they have several different and diverse areas of interest, so a page for each subject makes sense. You should ask them H.A. That's a real tricky one. If the group is open for everyone to join, who gets to say that someone can't join if it's an open membership? If they answer the survey, whether truthful or not, who's to say they can't have their stars and their membership if they've answered the questions? Geeze, that's a tricky one. Glad I'm not on the committee. I do know of a rescue support group that has temporarily terminated the membership of one particular rescue group due to the amount of complaints coming in. They're conducting their own investigation into the allegations and the group won't be listed in the meantime.

The first link I provided, MN herself. Although quite a few anti PR names in there as well so IDK what the go is. Not trying to make this another PR thread though so that's all from me :) I don't think that would be right at all Gertrude. MN would not be involved with NARGA.

NARGA are not associated with, or supporters of PR. Once they realised how the post was perceived they removed it. Raechel from NARGA was kind enough to respond to my message about the situation and explained it to my satisfaction. She has also given me permission to post her reply here. "Hi Jo, Thanks for your comments. The post was put there by me. The point of the post was that politics should not be taken out on the animals, ever. I can see that making a post via PR was an error in judgement as NARGA does not align itself with PR at all! The post may have incorrectly given that impression, and I have taken it down because I do not want that impression made. Thank you for pointing it out. I understand your concerns. I can assure you PR's issues will not be a part of NARGA. We are in the process of getting profiles together for our committee members which will be on the website soon as many people, like yourself, also want to know who is behind NARGA, and rightly so. Thanks for taking the time to let us know your concerns. Regards, Raechel"

See my next post RJ :)

What did the PR post say? They shared the post directly from PR's page about the dogs that had been allegedly poisoned by members of other rescue groups. They were asking for $5,000 to treat the poisoned dogs. They had an account for donations but no proof of vetwork or who the treating vet was. Any posts asking for details of the vet so people could donate directly are deleted. There are a couple of very frightening posts on PR's page. There's more discussion on the Pound Rounds Beware fb page https://www.facebook.com/poundroundsbeware?fref=ts Truly scary stuff.

facebook page https://www.facebook.com/NationalAnimalRescueGroupsofAustralia From their website: "We are a group of like-minded people, mostly from rescue backgrounds, who were upset at the lack of support, power, status and recognition of the hard work that animal rescue groups, foster carers and volunteers do. We put our heads together and came up with the idea of creating an association, just for them, and so NARGA was born. We have expanded on our original expectations now so that eventually NARGA will be the ultimate "one-stop-shop" for information, guidance, resources, referrals, details and discounts, to name a few things."

The PR post has gone from their fb page Now for a list of the committee members :)
-
Uh oh, maybe I joined too soon. I've contacted them and asked them to suspend my membership for the time being and said that I would like to know who are on the various committees first. I've also expressed concern about a post on their facebook page involving Pound Rounds. I won't be involved in that. I'd like these two things sorted before I consider re-joining.
-
I share their base philosophies. That's why I've decided to join :)

Yep, you beat me to it Steve. I tried to start a similar kind of thing a few years ago, nowhere near on this kind of scale though, it was more about rescues helping each other, offering advice and support, sharing information, etc. The smaller groups were very keen and liked the idea but it was hard getting larger, more established groups on board. In fact a couple were really rude about it, it was like how dare I ask them to be involved when they already knew everything anyway. In the end we scrapped the group and the smaller groups just went about quietly helping each other anyway. I'll be joining NARGA shortly, I'm happy to support them, at least they're giving it a go and trying to make a difference. If it turns out that it's not for me I can always leave, but in the meantime anyone who's got the time, passion and dedication to get something like this off the ground has my support. I liked their intro letter, yes there's room for improvement and with such a wide range of ideas not everything is going to be for everyone, but kudos to them for giving it a go. I'd rather add my for support for something that's got the potential to be great than pooh pooh it and watch them struggle because they didn't have the support they needed in the beginning. Jo xx

naughty people in your link have stolen the logo from a dog charity! http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/ Maybe it's one of those 'public use' logos like from Vistaprint. Hope so anyway. They support rescue too - they have a page with dogs for adoption from various groups. No Blind or Deaf collars though. Looks like they only do the medium/large sizes as well. naughty people in your link have stolen the logo from a dog charity! http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/ Classy. Personally, after hearing some not-very-flattering stories about the behaviour of the company that imports these collars into Australia, I'd never buy from them anyway. That's a shame. Anything the public should be aware of? I still haven't had a reply to my email I sent ages ago. I notice that they've posted on almost every rescue fb page, I hope they're looking after their customers as I'm sure there'll be a lot of interest in their products.

Good point, I guess the lead would be the main visual key for fluffies. Just realised that they don't have small sizes either, only medium to large sizes. poop.
