  1. When I was 16 (1977) my dog got hit by a car. The Vet recommmended he be PTS as the surgery would be very costly but it was my fault he was off lead so I asked the Vet if he could help the dog please. He said the surgery was very doable but costly. When a co-worker told my boss what had happen he gave me a one month advance in my pay so I could cover the bill. He was a top bloke!
  2. I must have read this wrong. So the dogs are fighting and you come over and she tells you to "eff off" while the dogs are still fighting??? You ignore her and grab her dog by the back legs...and thus endeth the fight! You go Girl..good on you. Some people are not terribly bright and unfortunately they get dumber in a crisis situation.
  3. Not particularly, but the internet is her friend in this situation. http://www.miniaturepoodleclub.org.uk/ OR http://kennels.co.uk/Utility/MiniaturePoodle.html I can probably only help with Norwich Terriers and they are a little ways off her mark. The return drive between Yorkshire and London would have taken a hellishly long time considering the actual distance, but there are bound to be many reputable breeders if not in the London area, within much closer neighbouring counties. Yes, she said she would have to drive about a Million Miles????? I'm sure she can find a good breeder closer to London. Also something that didn't sit well with me was the fact that the puppy had not been vaccinated at all yet. I don't know what the KC rules are in the UK but found this most odd.
  4. Yep, told her to get on to the Kennel Club site. Too many Poodle XXX's listings in the Pet classifieds for my liking with the odd Purebred KC registered thown in amongst them.
  5. My sister just got a voice mail from the breeder saying that the pup had been sold despite them agreeing for her to come up on the weekend. Bummer. Anyone know a KC registered Miniature Poodle breeder in London??????
  6. Don't ask me how much my "free" dog, Harrison has cost me ;) (not that I begrudge a cent of it) LizT - for your sister betting a purebred Poodle! Like the old saying "Nothing in life is free"!
  7. Like my Cavaliers....they love chasing the cats! If they run that is. My friend has always adopted GAP greyhounds and she gets them "cat friendly". They get along great.
  8. My sister had a look at a number of rescue homes. They seem to be brimming with Staffordshires and various crosses of said dog. Now she seems to be a bit concerned about the Puppies colour fading. She should stop being so superficial!!
  9. I find that advice worrying from a breeder. In order to make grooming (a lifetime commitment for a poodle) easier, little and often is the way to go for pups. It would be an absolute nightmare to keep a pup well maintained until that time and pretty traumatic for a pup in its second fear period to be presented for grooming for the first time at that age. I'd expect an 8 week old pup to have had its feet, face and tail clipped at least once when I got it and then to be clipped every six to eight weeks for the rest of its life. Clipping will not make the coat fade, all it will do is expose faded coat faster. Pity your sister chose one of the 'newer' colours IMO. Basic black or brown is always my recommendation. Thanks Poodlefan. That's what I thought. My first Purebred dog was a black miniature Poodle. He was awesome. Hey, I'm just relieved she's moved away from the "oodle" options!!!
  10. Totaly agree with this post. I believe storm phobia is strongly inherirted and will not breed from a dog that is shows any fear of storms, unless thye have been influenced by an owner that has a storm phobia themselves or they have been left out in a bad storm with no shelter and developed a fear of future storms. This is one of the very worst traits a dog can have as far as owners being able to cope with living with them. I'm not sure if it can be "Breed specific" or whether certain breeds are better at escaping their yards durings storms but I do note certain breeds appear to do a runner during storms too!
  11. Hello, My sister lives in London and is getting a miniature Poodle puppy bitch in a RED colour. It is from a KC Registered breeder and has several generations of health checks behind both parents and five years of checks behind each parent. So I believe the breeder to be knowlegable in this breed. The breeder has told her NOT to clip the puppies coat until she is 8 months old so as to avoid fading of the coat colour. Is this true? I would have thought nothing could stop a coat from fading if it was going to fade. Surely not clipping will only delay the inevitable?
  12. Plenty of squirrels in Hyde Park...but we don't want her chasing those!!! I'm sure my sister will make a wonderful Dog Owner. She has spent many years caring for a Flatmates Bassett that really wasn't getting any of the attention it should have until she came along. She has been a doggy "auntie" for so long now......it will be nice for her to finally be the true owner of one.
  13. Last night the storm here in Melbourne was pretty bad and our German Shepherd who sleeps on the back patio but can see into the family room decided to throw himself at the windows!! He does this from time to time and I usually chain him next to his bed, just out of reach of the glass doors. Then he just lays down and goes to sleep, probably deciding that that trick didn't get him anywhere but, well maybe he'll try in again another day!! He rarely even pays attention to thunder whereas my old GSD used to carry on like nobodys business and I ALWAYS let him inside during storms. I think my reaction to his behaviour consolidated the problem and I was determined not to "FEED" the phobia on this fellow. For the most part it works but on occassion I think he remembers seeing the old fellow make a fuss and get let in!
  14. I sent a young girl who regularly sends me updates and photos of the puppy she purchased a pink (she'd bought everything pink for her puppy) "snood" and Xmas card (with a Cavalier on it of course :D ) for Christmas last year. She appeared very appreciative and sent me yet more photos, but this time with her little girl wearing the "snood"! I'll probably send all the puppies a First Birthday card!
  15. I had a 12 year old Lhaso Apso/maltese cross desexed because he had a anal adanoema (sp?) That was a cancerous growth and the vet explained that it was an "Old boys disease "and desexing him was his best option. He went on to live to a ripe old 17 without any further health problems besides those normally associated with aging.
  16. Yep, I was surprised last year when a lady at my daughters school asked me about Cavaliers and I told her not to get one from a pet shop as she had mentioned seeing some there. She was very shocked and surprised when I told her the reasons why not. End Result..when they settle in their new home they will look up some registered breeders. Some people truly don't know the issues involved.
  17. I've been known to clip my older Cavalier (3)to my German Shepherd (5)lead and have them heel on my left with my other Cavalier (2)on the right. Haven't added the crazy puppy (5 months)to this mix for obvious reasons (really she's still too young for a long trek)!!
  18. The red's colour will probably fade but at least she's got some certainty around size, coat colour and temperament. Tell her to socialise the pants off it and get it into training ASAP. Thanks Poodlefan...her local vet runs Puppy preschool on a Tuesday night so she's all set for that! Being a London dog it will get to go everywhere with them too. It will also spent alot of time with her OH in his music studio as well. It'll be one cool pup.
  19. Yah, the voice of reason. Sister has realised she just wanted a dog so badly she was willing to compromise her values. I got a big THANK YOU email this morning and guess what????? She is driving out to Yorkshire on the weekend and getting a Lovely RED miniature poodle puppy bitch from a K C Registered Breeder who has ticked all the boxes IYKWIM. Yahhhh....I'm exhaused! :D Thanks everyone..alot of what you all said hit home to her via my emails.
  20. I think that is something you can come to expect from a "cold climate breed' but my friends GAP greyhound does the same thing and he has very little coat! So now they put a coat on him when it's cold...then the new problem is he wont pee with a coat on!
  21. Many years ago I had a Border Collie X. No fence would contain her she jumped, dug, squeezed through EVERYTHING! She felt it utterly necessary to be where I was. She had free run of our 11 acres which is quite a small area but NEVER EVER left that property, despite not being desexed (no she never had pups either!). Even if I went for a walk or a ride and I didn't want her to come I only had to say "Stay" and she sat at the top of the driveway and waited for us. When she was 5 we moved house. One day I took my young German Shepherd for a walk/training outing and didn't want her along. This was a smaller property I'd moved to and the house is close to the road. She sat at the apron of the driveway besidethe frontgate and waited for us to return. Some goody two shoes decided she was lost, took her to the Shire offices where they checked her rego tag, they informed the woman she had picked the dog up in FRONT of the house it lived at. They rang me and a very embarrassed woman returned my dog immediately!
  22. I have been emailing my sister this morning with information about the many genetic issues each breed has and the foolhardiness of combining breeds on unhealth test parents (as you say Jed). Along with much of what has been said on this thread. I have also told her that I am surprised she would support a BYB as this is precisely what she will do if she pays Euros/Pounds for any BYB DD pup. I believe this may hit a nerve with her as she is a intelligent woman, but sadly uninformed (as most Ms. Publics are). Only today the Principle of my daughters school asked me if my Cavalier pup was a Poodle /Cavalier Cross???? When I answered "No, she is a Purebred", she replies "Oh, but she doesn't have the long ears of a Cavalier?" The pup is five months old??? I explained the l o n g ears are mostly hair and grow as the pup gets older! She told me she had a Maltese/Poodle cross that she searched around many Pet Shops until she found exactly the pup she wanted??!! As my five months old Cavalier sat quietly at my feet a myriad of children hurried past, she exclaimed..."My she is very well behaved isn't she..so well adjusted...my dog would be jumping around crazily at this stage...Why was I not surprised? I have told my sister I don't have a problem with a cross breed dog persae...just with BYB who do not health test. This applies to purebred dogs too, who of course have their own set of problems but at least those breeders that screen their breeding stock are trying to help the breed overcome these problems or at the very least are trying lessen the severity and occurances.
  23. Would a Weaten be suitable???? Clearly she loves the 'look'.
  24. Not sure if that's a breed for a person who has never owned her own dog but has lived with a Bassett in London for a number of years. She's not very Puppy experienced, also I hear they can be a bit 'aloof' and boisterous.
  25. She is leaning towards a Cocker Poo now! At least that smaller. still.......
