  1. Yes that is why it grates with me to. I think lukewarm is a generous description of their attitude, and using pure breeds in their ads is hypocrisy. Maybe they use Pure breeds because they darn't admit that a DD might become a Pound Pup???
  2. We had a rescue here who had a sensitive tummy after he first arrived so I fed him poached (boiled not stolen!) chicken and boiled rice. We were travelling in the car and my youngest daughter said "I smell roast chicken" we laughed as it was Otis farting....it started out smelling a bit like chicken cooking but we ended up having to crack the windows!!
  3. I've forgotten already is this thread about beer or Afghans???
  4. I can just visualise wet labs that have jumped past the ping string, had a swim and now want to lie in the sun on dry warm pavers....ZAP! OWWW!!!
  5. Unrestricted access to chlorinated or salt filtered poolwater won't do any favours to their coats and skin either. Even regular supervised swimming needs a rinse down afterwards.
  6. Hey guys, it's advertising...all they care is that you remember the ad was about adopting a blonde..or speed dating or something like that at some place called RSVP I think?????. Where's my beer?
  7. My sister lives in th UK (London) she says the shelters are full of STB's. Clearly this particular shelter did not incorporate a satisfactory rehoming and temperament testing regime. The poor animal sounded nowhere near ready to share it's life with another small creature. The poor family, so trusting in what they had been told. Such a poorly handled situation.
  8. Seriously the big money has been spent on the property, would making a safe and secure area for your dogs really break the budget? It's not likely they would drown themselves, they are Labs but I wouldn't want dogs with access to my pool 24/7. Also if this is to become your main living/entertainment area what about visitors and their pets/children?? If it's already council approved maybe a secondary non pool fencing and therefore cheaper alternative fencing could legally be installed?
  9. Haven't heard of any connection? I'm hoping the pineapple will "break the habit". They have only been on it a week and it's been working great. I'm going to lessen the amount after a time and see what they do. I have read though that excessive (what's too much poo? ) poo eating can put a strain on the Kidneys???
  10. While it may work for some, it doesn't work for everyone How much did you give? Labs are a pretty big dog compared to a Cavalier. My girls get the equivalent of 5 pieces of tinned pineapple per meal. Perhaps it was not enough to be noticable? It took a couple of days to "kick in" too. Or you could just have a very determined sh12 eater! I do believe this is the case because she KNOWS she is not allowed, but still does it! By 5 pieces, you mean you give like 5 whole pineapple rings to a Cav per meal? No, not rings, five of the little pre cut wedges of a ring.
  11. When I am sick or sad my girl always are there for me. They come up and have a snuggle and are so gentle and follow me everywhere. They seem to know that it's a good idea to keep quiet at this time and now is not the time for wrestles or zoomies. If I have a stomach cramp or ache they seem to know and apply gentle pressure to where it hurts and somehow the pain eases. When I was going through my divorce my Border Collie X bitch was the biggest surprise. At one point I sunk down in the grass on the back lawn after the kids had been taken to school and I sat there for a very long time indulging in some self-pity and sobbing. I had no engery to get up. She sat there next to me licking my face and pressing up against me. Did she possibly sense my fragility at this time and wanted to make sure I wasn't going to do any stupid?? It would not have surpirsed me. Hope you are feeling better soon. Food poisoning is the pitts.
  12. While taking on a Rescue is a noble cause be careful who you encourage to do so. Not everyone is equipped with the potential special needs that may come with some rescue Dogs. They need to have the time, space and a very secure yard for a rescue Siberian for example. Sometimes you can help Rescue by just looking after the dogs you have correctly and ensuring they don't end up a statistic too.

  14. I think you are correct in this. Every Delivery driver, Religion pusher, metre reader and Power company vendor (etc. etc.) has the right to safe access to the front door of any property. And this includes not tripping up on your garden hose or kids bikes while coming up the path too! You will find most household insurance policies have a Public Liability clause. I think legally dogs must be contained to the rear of a property in this country. I've had letters in the past stating this as I've had dogs with acess to the entire property when living on small acreage and been asked to contain them for metre readers. And just about any dog is capable of jumping up and biting someone on the face. The cop was just doing his job.
  15. Indeed, a 5 year old a 7 year old and an 8 year old so savagely attacked and scarred for life on so many levels!!! Makes me cry.
  16. The pineapple definitely works for dogs that are eating their own and if the other dogs at home get some too. I discovered that if my older Cavs happen to poop indoors they try to "clean up" the evidence, which is seen in the form of skid marks on the polished boards and disgusting breath!!! A few pieces of tinned pinapple and they leave it alone....for me to clean up, which is better but equally infuriating as they have every opportunity to poop outside and do most times. Strangely enough they NEVER even try to eat the poop they do outdoors???? SOmething to be grateful for I guess. It must be a "den cleaning thing" for them indoors?? Cat litter trays are now fortunately out of their domain!!! Don't think I'd get the cats to eat pineapple somehow! ;)
  17. Certainly a "Catch 22" situation. I agree that a dog should be under effective control and to that end I would never let my youngest (10) take out the GSD without an older person along to help if "the need arised". He has been know to sit there placidly while some "nuff nuffs" dog has been hanging off his neck with the owner stupidly saying "Well that's what my stupid dog deserves for attacking a German Shepherd"! Meanwhile my other daughter (18) has become outraged (and rightly so) that our poor boy has to put up with this stupidity and she's trying to pull this dog off him???? But it's a sad day indeed when a kid can't take the family dog out for a walk on the lead because he hasn't been taught how to walk a dog properly. Too many times I've seen kids walking dogs no bigger than a beagle that are pulling madly and obviously strong for them with arms extended and no 'give' in those small arms should the dog go for another quick lunge. The lead would easily be flicked out of small hands and what then...dog fight.....run over dog.....cat attacked? Anything could happen really but , hey, at least the kids have put down the DS and got off the couch. Really I'd like to see more older kids walking their dogs. Effectively of course. ;)
  18. It's outrageous, but I have had that too - 2 JRTs running out of a house to charge and nip at my 2 on-lead dogs, owner comes out and calls one dog back succesfully, the other JRT runs off down the street. And the owner stands there wailing at me to go catch her dog. My response wasn't exactly polite, LOL. That's a bit like when my daughter was riding on the roadside in front of a property and a Kelpie/GSD X runs out of the property barking and snapping at her horse who then rears. The owner comes out and calls his dog and then tells my daughter she should be riding on the reserve across the road and not in front of his place. She replies that this is the way home for her. not through the reserve and his dog should be kept on his property. His response is "My dog, NEVER leaves the property!". "Well I'm certainly not riding on your property am I" responds my daughter who is still on the roadside!
  19. dancinbcs...if I ever get that Border Collie I've always wanted I'm getting it from you!!! On another note the 7+ Male Cavalier Rescue I had for one month learnt so much in that time and bonded so well. He now lives with my parents and follows my elderly mum around like a puppy! They have both bonded with each other. Oh...and one other thing...I've found the bond I have with the puppy I whelped is amazingly strong. Having her since birth is a whole new experience.
  20. I feel your pain. My five month old puppy will always pee outside and we wait and wait for her to poo. Nothing. Then five minutes after we are back inside she poos. No matter how long we wait outside for her she seems to think going inside is the way! At least her poos are little though.
  21. I know a Cavalier breeder in Gympie lost her lovely boy to Cane Toad poisoning...he was deadin 15 minutes. They have a nightly cane toad watch but missed one this time.
  22. Yes you got it right. She was pretty mad when I told her she shouldn't have a dog ;) . I was so angry at her attitude and I should probably have shut up myself but I hate bullies and that is what she was trying to do to this other guy (the poor mans wife and 3 kids were on the other side of the road watching this go on). I guess acting like that has worked in the past for her and she thought it would work again and she got even angrier when it backfired and I didn't back off in fear. I still can't believe that no one had stopped to help them before me. There were cars driving past and people walking by just watching it happen. I would have thought that someone would have at least called a ranger or the police There are so many clueless people out there it's scary! Geez...you're lucky she didn't end up needing her back legs pulled out from under her!!!
  23. Poor, paw Daisy. ...and poor Huski. Procedure complications are worrying. It might take a bit for the swelling to go down. Try not to worry too much. ..lots of postive vibes.
  24. I think you need to get the vet and the husband to act if the old lady is a bit timid on it. Sure grooming accidents can happen with loose skin and such (I've nicked a horse between the front legs) but this sounds way beyond anything remotely acceptable. Poor dog, it's going to be a real tough job clipping her next time if "playing up" was the cause. Glad you're doing it as at least you can understand her fear.
