  1. Hmmm....except maybe a breed that fades when clipped as per poodles. Silvers start out black. Reds can turn apricot Having a wheaten from pup to around two is like having a different breed each week but a mastiff, though? That wasn't the OP's question Sheridan. That was a hyperthetical one put out by another Doler.
  2. It would be great if we could educate people to pick up on the signs at home that their dog is in distress. Particuarly those that believe their dog is a stable family pet and are equally shocked when things go wrong. I've been told that my German Shepherd will "turn" on me because I feed him raw meat (along with dry food) and that this will make him vicious. Seriously somone said this to me and he was a German Shepherd owner. I wonder if my Cavalier King Charles pack will turn on me for the same reason!!
  3. Gosh, I love Op-Shops. For Clothes and some "special treasures" but I get the feeling these days they get "picked over" well before the General Public get a chance to have a look-see. I wouldn't bother with E-bay or a Garage Sale as I'm not after any money. I would hope the goods would be donated free to those who need it and not sold in an Op-Shop though.
  4. Same here. Since it's now Sunny and the weathers fine, with tomorrow being Saturday I'm putting it out front. There will also be a perfectly fine cot and cradle . Since the charity wont take them because they no longer have their Australian Standards sticker on them.
  5. I had my Rotty girl given a full check up during her last two visits at my local vet. The vet said her problems were due to some arthritis in her front joint and gave her some pain killers which were to be used on her bad days. I wasn't happy with this and took her to another vet pratice recommended to me by DOL members and was told yesterday she has cancer. I now only have her for a few days more. So sorry to hear this RL1. At least you know the truth of her ailment now and can be of comfort to her at this time.
  6. Did they mention "What grade" of heart murmur? When did her regular vet last check her heart? It could well be an age onset heart murmur and if it's a a low level doesn't necesarily mean a shorter life expectancy for her. Some of the low levels do not even require medications. Surgery in any elderly dog is a risk, so I guess with the addition of a heart murmer therisk is increased and if there are othr alternatives best to consider those first. Don't worry too much, it may not change much in the big picture for your girls long term welfare.
  7. So I finally got the new leather lounge suite I'd been saving for. The old one IMO was too good for the hard rubbish (which comes next week so no inconvenience for me) so I thought I'd donate it to a well known charity. They just came around and I swear the guy went over it with a fine tooth comb. He found a small tear that I think may have happened while the armchair had been resting upside down against the couch. Pity as it wasn't there before. So that armchair stays, fine. He declares the couch and other armchair okay. The suite is 11 years old and would have done me for a few more years if need be. It's been well taken care of any, yes, and the kitten mistook it for a scratching post a few times but for the most part it's in good condition. No stains or tears (I thought anyway) It does have some pet hair on it but it had been vacuumed regulary and for the most part the dogs stayed off thanks to a few "X-Mats". So they try lifting it out the front door and it doesn't appear to fit. Turn it the other way I tell them (it'll fit fine on that angle it came in that way) being a veteran of many, many house moves I've got spacial estimating down to a fine art. As they tilt it they notice some fluff under the couch. I'd vacuum under the chair but my son and OH thought I was being 'anal' and didn't let me vacuum under the couch. :What's this fluff" they ask. "Dog hair" I answer. "Oh we don't take furniture with Pet hair" say this bloke and puts the couch down. Fine, I said leave it then. So they they drag it back to it's original position and scrap the floor. "Hey, don't scratch my floor" I yell and tell them to Piss Off. First bloke says to second bloke. "Lift it." They put the couch back, thank me and off they go. Leaving one armchair on it's side resting on my daughters shoes and the other armchair on it's side. I fell off a horse last Sunday and there ' no way I can lift this. Fortunately big No. 1 son comes home at this time and tidys up the mess. So now it looks like lounge suite will go on hard rubbish after all. Perhaps it is a bit scruffy to donate. But most people I'd spoken to thought it was too good to chuck out. Oh well.
  8. NEVER...but OH says "Where's Mum" to them. But that is my label here I am the Mum of the family I have three offspring of my own living here.
  9. Yes, some of the Chocolates are quite Russet aren't they?
  10. So are DA (dog aggressive) dogs, the kind that don't get along with other dogs in ANY situation also fearful dogs? Despite owners saying they are fine at home etc. etc. Is it a fear of other dogs and perhaps other people that makes them a potential attack risk? But what then of cases where the dogs all appeared "normal' in their behaviour prior to the attack. Or is it again signals missed because the layman is no good at interpretting dog language?
  11. I've done extensive internet searches about this and all I could find is that "animals are not allowed in food preparation areas". So a dog sitting in the eating area - is not breaking this rule. And in fact, guide dogs (for blind people) are not allowed to be refused. And I think the rules are beginning to include disability help dogs besides just dogs that assist blind people. Same with hotels. While a hotel might choose to ban dogs, it isn't for "health reasons". Really, we're much more likely to get "health problems" from other humans than our dogs. I couldn't agree more. Yet I did see a news story last year about certain councils fining Sidewalk Cafes despite those Cafes trying to be "dog friendly". It was on ACA so who knows. Perhaps it was "Local Council Bylaws???"
  12. Yeah, that's scotty, the North Bondi pap. He travels every day into the city In the 1980's when taking trains to work I saw someone fined for having a dog on a train. I used to sneak mine on weekends so I could go visit my mum and dad. Just local Metropolitaon trains in Melbourne, used to be called Vicrail. I doubt they bother to change that rule, except of course guide dogs as per the usual arrangement. Taxis wont take pet dogs. We were lucky when our car broke down that the taxi driver happily allowed our Cavalier with us. If it had been our GSD he would probably have travelled with the Towtruck driver and my husband. I hope.
  13. Group training here is about $2 to $5 a class with a yearly fee of about $12 to $20. No complaints about that, cheap. GSD Club training is $2 per visit but the membership fee is around $100.
  14. Just as an interest to your question (bolded) Recently we rescued an 8 year old Entire Cavalier male from a Puppy Farm. He had spent many years outside peeing when he wanted to. In the month he was with us we began to housetrain him and he was doing wonderfully. When he was strong enough physically he was desexed. Two months later the new owners (my mum and dad :p ) tell me he now squats! Which is funny really at his age especially with the fact that he was a "marking machine" Also I once owned an entire female Maltese X who had been a stray and she marked all around the garden, lifting her leg, but never in the house.

  16. i guess thats why they are called a bitch  Nah, it's why we women are called "Bitches". Does anyone find the male/female mix breed dependent?? I'm wondering what a Collie person has to say?
  17. GABBA, I think it was the open endedness and naievity of your question that set off "alarm bells" if you like. It did come across as you not knowing a very basic fact about an animal you are inquiring about and own. Particulary the "is it safe to breed" question. Do some research on your breed, don't look for "general answers" such as you'll get on a forum for hard facts. Read, read, read on your chosen breed and then read some more. Talk to the breeder or contact other mastiff people to learn more. Read books on breeding in general. If you just wanted to know when a Mastiff reaches maturity, ask that question. If you are interested in Breeding, ask questions pertaining to that. I'm sure you, like others on this forum are simply interested in learning more about your breed, no one will find fault with that.
  18. I believe that most "Dog Friendly" cafes and pubs, (including coffee shops that put out water bowls for dogs) are actually violating many council rulings and health codes and despite a blind eye being turned for many that some are also prosecuted for this.
  19. One day when sightseeing in Austria we stopped at a Tavern for lunch. We sat outside in a Beer Garden and there was a Rough Collie siting besides it owner at one of the tables. At another table a German Shepherd was snoozing on the floor as the owner drank and laughed. We had a little 6 months old baby with us and we had no qualms about his safety as I put his carrier on the floor bedside my chair. Whilst we ate lunch the Collie and his family got up and left and the collie walked past a Doberman and his people who were just arriving without so much as a sideways glance from either dog. I knew these dogs were beautifully socialised and no harm would come to my child who continued to sleep peacefully on the floor. On the same trip whilst in London we stopped at the Pub. "We don't allow those in here"..I heard a male voice announce. I turned around expecting him to be addressing someone with a dog but NO. It was my baby he was referring to. Some cultures take getting used to.
  20. That's one scary idiot. Sorry, I couldn't resist. Sometimes if we don't laugh, we'd have to cry. I had to do a second take too Mrs.R.B! I thought her neighbour might have encountered Mr. H. Lector. (Yes, sometimes we need things to lighten it up!)
  21. I get excited about anything that 's possibly going to make life easier!! Since we're talking vacuuming and dogs. I just sprinkled some Bicarb Soda on the carpet, left it while I surfed the forum and then vacuumed. Really helps remove the "stale doggy smell" so that the pooches can now roll around and put "fresh doggy smell" down.
  22. A good idea in principle Jed but I dread the thought of a Media provided "Expert". It's a bit of a worry - especially in light of the "experts" they usually have .... but one could only hope that they would get someone who actually DID know! It would really help, I think A friend of mine and an excellent dog trainer was booked in to appear on a news segment yesterday morning to discuss dog attacks and bsl. They ended up canceling the segment at the last minute. This person is an expert on dog behaviour and training with over 10 years experience in training working dogs. I hope they do end up completing the segment. I hope they do too. Too often important things get put on the back burner because of 'time'.
  23. Thanks Joe, I know what you mean. A person should feel safe around someones elses well trained guard dog. They should feel "protected" too until such time that they are a genuine threat and the dog should respond in a controlled way, as per it's correct training.
  24. I've had one for 15 years! A worthwhile investment. Repaired twice when I thought it was dead at about $180.00 each time.
  25. Sandgrubber are you pissed????(Australian definition not U.S.) Or..it could be me trying to understand what you'd typed after having taken a dose of Oxycodone and Paracetamol/codine as I had a riding accident last Sunday and hurt my back.
