Should Members Of The Public Be Allowed To Bring Their Own Dogs Along
LizT replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
SwaY, I'm glad your dog didn't get hurt. This is a very tricky situation. What dictates that a dog is suitable to be out in polite company? It is not just the pet of Joe Public that can make a nuisence of itself if allowed to get into the 'face' of another dog. I have often seen many exhibitors let their dogs get far too close to another dog (even in the showring) and that can always be a receipe for a 'tiff'. Not all dogs are as friendly or social as each other (or as their owners believe they are!), whether they are purebred or not, exhibits or not they should all be given their space. And if I may just add, Showdogs should also be kept under 'control' when people are walking past. A few years back when I first started showing again my then, seven year old daughter was simple walking past a woman who was holding onto a number of ....small breed dogs on lead, when one jumped up at her and bit her arm, tearing her jacket. She was fortunate it was cold and her arms were well covered and not bare. I believe it is a given that a Dog Lover would be the likely person to visit a Dog Show, and as such is it likely that they may have their pet with them. Of course they need to be held accountable for the behaviour of their pet. And for that matter any children they bring along!! I think it is also a HUGE assumption that all exhibits have their vaccinations up to date but that pet owners may not. There is nothing that monitors either or any evidence to suggest a person who Show dogs is more or less likely to be up to date with vaccinations than a pet owner. On the contrary owning multiple dogs may be more of a hinderence than a help due to cost, time etc. with regard to an up to date vaccination schedule. Perhaps some signage asking the public to ensure thy have FULL CONTROL of their PETS at all times if visiting would not go astray? -
My oz Entries Saturday only (that's all I enetered) arrived today. With a forecast of 14 degrees on Saturday and 13 degrees on Sunday.....Rug Up! As a trolley user I totally agree, most helpful for all the gear. BUT I do find that you are limited to the amount of weight you can pile on for an easy push. It's those little wheels, they tend to get stuck in soft ground. Could still be a couple of trips with a large weighted dog, but definitely easier. We carry sooo much gear these days it always seems to be a couple of trips anyway. First the reconicence with the mat and chairs to locate a 'spot', then the gazebo if outdoors, then the trolley and dogs, gear, food etc. Whatever happened to the days of man, dog and bag with brush, bowel and towel cica mid 1980's!!!!

Thanks SwaY. BBJ are you 'listening"? I'll keep you a spot indoors!

I wouldn't have thought we'd get them before next week. That's true there is still another week to go. My calendar is running away from me! LOL
-
Indeed....and a very valid point.

Has everyone got their numbers? I did my entry online and haven't got anything back yet. Yes, I did tick the post numbers bit. If they don't come by tomorrow I'll ring Show Sec. to be sure.

No, neither can I and yet the Club made a very 'basic' announcement, and there were a few details actually stating dogs had been "found dead" on a letter posted in the clubrooms and I spoke to a person who had firsthand knowledge of the 'find'??? I'm surprised that "privacy laws" can stop any media coverage. Something is not 'jelling' with this one. The woman I spoke to said the Police had said that one of the dogs was in fact a Rottie but she says she saw them and they were definitely both GSD's. Not that the breed makes any difference unless it's a breed vendetta or something. But it actually sounds more personal to me. She also said the Police had told her it was a "non event". She told them try telling that to the 16 year old girl who was with her in the car when they saw the dogs!!! All very strange.

We had an announcement today at our branch of the German Shepherd Dog Club that "there had been an "incident" involving a number of German Shepherds in the Hampton Park/Hallam area and that owners are advised to be dilgent and aware of strangers acting suspiciously around their homes etc.etc. On further prompting I was told by an "eye witness" who had seen these dogs (two)that they had been killed and left dumped in the front of their homes with their mouths taped shut???? She said that another dog had also been found in the same condition. They said that due to the privacy act no further information could be given. Has anyone heard anything of this report?

Thanks Sway, most concise as usual!!!

We will be there on the Saturday. So, since all ring are outdoors where would the best place to park be for Ring One???

I have been told by my produce supplier that the Royal Canin Cavalier 27 is no longer available in the large (8.5 kg ) bag and is now only being made in the small bag. I am awaiting a reply from Royal Canin on this. Any else heard anything about this?

Based on much that I have read and heard of the "Purebred" dog today, some would say that "Soundness" is being sacrificed for "type" already.

A little Brag I had another great day today with my little Cavalier girl. 1st. Intermediate Bitch Bitch Challenge Best of Breed and Intermendiate in Group
-
I was at first wondering why the story referred to them as "Designer Dogs" but you are right...the trend to breed excesses of a type/characteristic is very much a "DD' thing regardless of the purebred status. This pandering to 'fashion' only adds to the "bad press" for Purebred dogs.

Is she still under veterinary care? There is no point trying to treat her for stomach ulcers unless that has been diagnosed. Usually a bland diet is prescribed along with soothing medication which may not be suitable for a pregnant bitch.

Small brag Saturday 23rd. My little Cavalier girl got (Group 1) Ist. intermediate Bitch then.. Best Intermediate in Group...then Best Intermediate in Show!!!

My deepest sympathy to you, OH and especially the children.

I don't want some dogs at cafe's I walked past a bloke with two dogs the other day, they were waiting with him while he chatted to someone on the footpath, and they smelt soooo bad I think even cast iron stomach me would throw up if trying to eat or drink coffee whilst sitting next to them. I doubt he was the sit at a cafe sort but who knows...who decides these things?

I too saw this news report last night and I had to make sure my 10 year old was out of earshot as my husband had stumbled across it on the Web news and told me about it. I feel for the younger generation of Chinese who are horrified and upset by what is a traditional dish for the rich. Most things from the past that are for the rich are fraught with the suffering of others and overindulgence. Their belief being that eating dog meat will help make you warm for the winter, actually any protein will assist in that. I must say though that I don't see much of a future for these rescued dogs who do appear to have been bred for the food industry and therefore their socialisation would be virtually nil. They appear to me to be of some Shepherd dog type and I'm sure I saw what looked like a close to purebred German Shepherd amongst the footage? There was also some very sad footage of moggies destined for meals and I would say these cats were completely feral in their association with people.

Our thoughts are with Bilbo Baggins and Bilbo Baggins Jnr who have had to farewell their almost 16 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel bitch Clarelly Wilhelmina who has passed over the rainbow bridge. She will always be with you BB and BBJ. A very special lady. So much time is still never enough.

So sorry for your loss. The only experience I've had was with an adult dog (greyhound) belonging to a friend who I cared for regularly (dog not friend). He became suddenly ill and despite intensive care at a Vet died. I personally suspected he had got into horse worming paste but owner was sure she had disposed of container properly. His symptoms look similar to a dog that I had who had eaten horse wormer (survived). The owner had a post mortem done and weeks later and a huge bill her results were "inconclusive". Under your circumstances, which are different, it may be worthwhile, although the answer may lie in the dam (possible infection?) and not the fetuses.

I used to do this 30 years ago but for some reasons my dogs today get fed every day??? Probably just part of my routine I guess. I think it does do them good to 'fast' now and then. It gives their insides a chance to clean out.

It's lovely that this dog is being given a second chance. I believe that really what happens to Buster is the decision of the family who own him and who are working on his rehabilitation with K9Pro, since what occurred happened in their own backyard and within the confines of the family. I believe however, that it certainly would be a different scenario had Buster attacked a stranger in the street. Can't help but wonder also, what the situation would be if a child member of the family had been bitten instead of adults. I doubt Buster would get a second look under those circumstances.

Indeed. TLC from you all your family with lots of quiet time. It's good she is drinking well. just offer her a tablespoon of food every now and then. Lots of little snacks will be easier for her to deal with and less likley to vomit if she doesn't have alot in her quite small tummy. Big hugs to little one. :p
