  1. Rebanne Like I have said in other snake related threads already, you need to retrain or restrain your dogs. If you cant train your dog not to attack a snake then I suggest (again) the use of the shadecloth to creats a barrier between the dogs and the protected wildlife they may come acroos. Clean up your yard and dont give the snake anywhere to hide. Short grass and trees and shrubs pruned in such a way as you can see under them, Water around the dogs can attract snakes in the drier parts of the year, be aware, Get ontop of the rodents as the snake will hunt them using their sense of smell. Venomous snakes do not attack dogs and any vet will tell you that the dog is just not on the menu for a snake. (apart from large pythons) When a snake sees a dog, it reacts defensivly because as far as a snake is concerened, dogs and humans are huge predators juts wanting to eat them. But the best advice i can give it training and vigilance. Everytime you remove a large snake, another one will move into its territory. Dont fight nature, rather, build yourself and your dogs snake free areas.. i know ive forgotten something but no doubt i will be reminded of it soon. Really good advice snake cathcer. I have a dam just on the edge of my driveway with heaps of frogs. We have seen tigers and mostly copperheads. We have one Copperhead who likes to sun himself on the horses round yard as the quarter minus keeps nice and warm for him. He has been spotted, obseved and enjoyed by myself and my daughter many times. My OH is snake paranoid and I only mention sightings to him AFTER the snake is in the clear as I'm sure he would simply shoot it! At least I get the area all cleaned up and trimmed BEAUTIFULLY if I mention the words "it's looking a bit snakey around the dam" heheheh He puts on a pair of Kevlar motor bike pants, long gum boots and spends the day cleaning up. Keep the grass short and your eyes open and your dogs in areas as safe as you can make it.
  2. Innesveil Classic Crystal is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. That's her sitting with my GSD in the Avatar photo. (They are in love but it's purely platonic! )
  3. that may have been Mr S Schwerdt (SA) Thanks Edpra...that was a replacement judge for Ms. S. Godfrey (S.A.) I gather.
  4. It is quite easy to see why the dog world can never be united in any subject other than ones' own self interest when comments are made that show an obvious disregard for fellow exhibitors. I can only begin to imagine the uproar if I took my full in season bitch onto a ground being used for obedience etc. Apart from the obvious problems caused by both actions I would like to think that we would all show some consideration to fellow dog people. Then maybe Ive' been bought up wrong. Well at the Royals the obedience/agility dogs are usually seated where the conformation dogs were in the previous days and I saw people toilet their dogs in the obedience area, they actually moved the fencing put there to stop people doing so (some where in season too)........I never read about any uproar or bitching from triallers about lack of consideration from exhibitors. The only people who seem to whinge about bitches in season are exhibitors themselves. I showed my bitch at this years Royal, I very rarely get to attend the Royal so wanted to go this year, my bitch happened to come into season the week before we were meant to show. I let everyone know around me she was in season and guess what? Everyone was fine with it and no dogs carried on like pork chops. I would still like to know why people want to ban the one thing that shows that a bitch is entire and able to be bred when the whole point behind showing is too "better the breed"? I've even heard people say "Is there a bitch in season around? My boys really brightened up since he came over to the ring". I think if people just remember protocol and manners, bes considerate and give everyone else some space, regardless of dogs sex, breeding status etc. everyone will have a better day.

  6. Looking at the Radar and I think it's very wet everywhere in Victoria!
  7. My experience with this disease is with an elderly (28) year old horse. She was my much loved part bred Arabian Pinto and sddenly came down with Odema (swelling in legs)and localised plaque (fluid lump under abdomen area) she was put on a bland non protein diet and given probiotics. She began to loose weight and scour so the vet prescribed 100 (yes 100) codiene tablets to "bind" her up. She lost weight dramatically and she was started on a five day Cortinsone injection course. She was rapidly turning to skin and bone and although I didn't want to give up on her I told my OH I was going to have her put down. He got angry with me as it was day three of the cortisone injections and he felt I was giving up on her. He said "Well, she's your horse"! I planned to call the vet out the next morning but found her dead. All this happened in two weeks.
  8. Such a lovely, well established and experienced family group too!
  9. Is the Saturday Evening Show outdoors or Indoors??
  10. Yes, we've used it too after our GSD went through quite a few of the other metal and plastic types from the outside and the Cavaliers went at it from the inside. It holds up beautifully and is not over the top price wise. Don't despair Rottnbullies I have a Burmese cat who was a master at causing similar destruction to our flyscreens so he could squeeze out!
  11. Sometimes it can be very hard to make a decision regarding the welfare of the puppies you breed but trusting your judgement goes along way. Ultimately it is up to the breeder and the buyer has the choice of going elsewhere. I bred a litter of Cavalier KCS last year and had five bitches to sell. I used a "Desexing contract" and also sweetened it with a $100 refund when the bitch was desexed at 6 months of age. I know that the desexing contract is pretty much impotent in itself BUT it did give the buyer MY PROMISE in writing, of which it's legal standing I don't know but morally I felt oblidged to follow through on. ALL puppies were desexed before their first season and everyone got their refunds barr one puppy. She had a inverted vulva and the family who bought her were advised by their vet to allow her to have a first season to assist in the vulva maturing properly and to help reduce the incidence of UTI that the poor girl had been experiencing. The family contacted me, sent me a letter from their vet, I agreed without hesitation. The bitch has since been desexed and her malady appears to have been rectified. Now what would have been the plight of this little one if I had had her desexed at 8 weeks of age?? I will also add that it does not help that many Councils want pups registered at 3 months now instead of the previous 6 months of age and desexed by then too. My pet male GSD's over the years have been desexed at approximately 7 months.
  12. yep I've had a fence go down because of a tree falling on it. Luckily I was home at the time. Same here. Our neighbours had an aborist fell a large tree and even he managed to miscaluculate and the outer branches of the very large tree came down on our rural ringlock fence and our GSD's yard suddenly became much, much larger!! Also fortunate we were home and watching too! And on another note these past two days our front gate has been 'ajar' and not shut properly. I 'appear' to be the culprit yesterday but can't believe I left it open. And OH appears to be responsible today but this is baffling us??? We think something may be amiss with the latch so are all "being EXTRA diligent" now instead of just "diligent". This morning I let three Cavalier bitches out to toilet and then they came back inside. Only to find out an hour later that the the gate was open at 45 degree angle???
  13. Not saying that spending all that time in a glass cage wont have had an ill effect on the poor dog but, there a plenty of people out there who can turn a perfectly well socialised puppy into a neurotic without any difficulty. ps. Offer advice when it is asked for. Sneak it in in casual conversation.
  14. Errr since when is that? As far as I know GTG (the main "DNA Testing" lab in Australia) will test any dog (registered or not) for a disease. I've certainly paid for a test for a non-registered dog by them. No issues. I also work in a DNA lab (research with a little bit of Disease testing) and as far as I know - we will test the genes in any dog regardless of registration. Don't know why any lab would make such a rule - would cut out a clients...which isn't the aim of any business. At the same time - for registered breeders - you generally have to get the DNA collected by an authorized person (i.e. a vet). But if you just want the results for kicks or your a non registered (non-ANKC) breeder then you wouldn't necessarily have to do this. for PRA ? You may be right but isnt there something about certified results or similar ? Yes for that you need to get the DNA collected by a vet, but the dog doesn't have to be registered. This just insures that the dog your testing is the dog who supplied the sample (i.e. no cheating). There are also "By parentage" certificates - no DNA test done (based on DNA tests of parents), perhaps the dog does need to be registered for this. I would think that Microchipping would cover any question of who the animal is these days _Purebred, Registered or otherwise.
  15. brilliant! thanks This works great as I have fluffy feet Hobbits...err Cavaliers!! However I did get an ear caught (long, long feathery ones!)up in my dremmel when my girl turned her head suddenly! Fortunately the Dremmel shut down IMMEDIATELY so it was no harm done and easy to untangle. But it sure scared me! Now I make sure she's got her snood on too. ps. I had bought the cheaper nail grinder with the guard but it's not as powerful as the dremel so it was only really a buffer after trimming with the nail clippers. I bought a small cordless DREMMEL when it ws on Sale an it is ace!
  16. Oh Fordogs how terrible for you. Yes the big question is WHY they didn't call you to let you know what was going on?
  17. It is a lottery with any animal with its health. Yes there are some things that you can test for but they are living creatures and there is a whole heap of stuff that can go wrong with them. The only thing I would say is a lottery with a DD is what the coat is going to be like and what size they end up. There is a whole heap more in that lottery than just coat type and size .the fact that coat can have that many combinations times that by 100,000 genes which can match and mix up in any combination . And that is why many people are drawn to the uniqueness of the randomly breed mutt. In the belief that "it wont happen to me" something people are good at in general terms. Most would be buying their DD's and Purebred dog with fingers crossed hoping for a positive outcome and a happy long life for said pup.
  18. There is absolutely no point in saying stuff about dogs people already have. Apart from to give advice about feeding & training etc. Not necessarily. Alot of these people have just got their first dog and are looking at "getting some company for him". Usually in the misguided hope that that will fix their dogs "issues" the "easy way"!!
  19. Yes, sadly GSD owner needs to be most careful. Especially as the incident occurred in the street. Also, if he has just moved into the area his dog may not be registered and this will also be a strike against him.
  20. Have only heard good things about Dogtainers.
  21. Dynzney I think you may be on to something. I believe Black Hawk has dandelion in it. Dandelion is a diuretic and can increase urine procuction and this in turn will cause an increase in thirst. All good natural cleansing reactions.
  22. That's probably because people don't know where it came from. The puppy farm, where Krudd got his dog from, also sell....Shitese! Now that is sad. Presumably a Shi Tzu x Maltese? Grow up! making fun of names is appropriate to 10 yr olds, not adults. Please include some substance if you have a beef with someone's position. Who gives a hoot if Kevin Rudd bought a GR from a kennel that also sells some other breed or cross breed. If I put on my economic justice hat, I could probably knock you pretty bad for something . . . buying gasoline from a nasty petroleum producer, buying wood from a company that buys unsustainably produced timber, buying coffee from some source that screws the primary producers, blood diamond in your engagement ring? . . . etc., etc., etc.. I hesitate to say this on a purebreed forum, but my experience in running a boarding kennel is that the Shi Tzu x Maltese is a particularly successful F1 hybrid. They tend to be healthy and be a bit more moderate in temperament than either of the parent breeds. I don't advocate cross breeding. But I do object to pure breed enthusiasts making fools of themselves by making fun of things that the broader public doesn't see as a problem. If you're going to criticize, please do so responsibly, with substance. Pre-adolescent humour doesn't help a policy debate. (I'm considering taking on another personna .. . 'wet blanket' . . . a wet blanket is what some of these little flare ups call for). hmmm....maybe 'Fire Blanket' would be better....a 'Wet Blanket' is also the definition of a "Party Pooper" ??
  23. Interesting....did you hear clearly? Poodle...cavoodle sound very similar. ETA Tony Abbott did call her a mincing poodle ;) No, it was Julia who called Christopher Pyne a "mincing poodle" - easy enough to check these things before posting Owww... You're right Am I bad! LOL
