This is really encouraging and uplifting news hilaryo. Hope things continue on this positive note. So sad that you lost your extra two pups, as it were. Play together 4eva little sisters I did not say that she had mastitis. I was just correcting the misinterpretation of mastitis. As LizT stated that old treatment for mastitis was to remove they baby, now it s not but not all have to caught on to this information. ETA. Had to change Aziah's post as the mail marshall blocked the word starting with b... ;) ;) I can only reply to how I interpreted your post BB - there was no harm meant. Anyhoo...moving right along. Ooops! I was just talking about mastitis in general as it appeared to be indicated that IF the bitch had it the pups shouldn't feed. Such is the way of the text conversation.

Yep definitely possible for AP Antibiotics are normal for c sections(I am sure I read the bitch had a c section) I remember reading in one of my books that the Author refuses to let her bitches have antibiotics after a delivery (as was routine at some stage?) as she had lost many pups and none when they don't have Anti-biotics. But I guess it's a risk you must take with a C-section. Also imagine it would depend on the drugs used. Maybe some Protexin for bitch and pups are in order?

This talk of mastitis is interesting as I am a HUGE advocate of breast feeding (people) and although I know that generally it is said that if one has mastitis that one should not feed the baby HOWEVER I have read much literature stating that this is bad advice and detrimental for both the mother and child and PROVIDED there is no infection (and mastitis isn't nescesarily an infection and is different from what is called "Toxic milk", the baby feeding IS the best treatment and that the breast should be drained AND that there is no danger to the baby. So is it different in Dogs? I wouldn't think so as they are mammals too.

Indeed!

Poor little mite. So sorry to hear of this. We lost a boy with a cleft palate last year on day 3, he also had to be PTS. We didn't let mother see him after we got back from the Vets as she was busy with her other 5 but she did look around for him as we had been feeding him and she was used to us taking him regularly but we always gave him back. We thought it would be easier if she didn't see him again as we somehow felt she might thik WE killed her baby (which we did!) but don't know how to explain this to her. Also the vet warned us that if she tried to 'rouse' him she could get some of the toxins from the syringe on her so we needed to be very careful about that if we decided to show him to her. It ws a tough call but we decided against it in this instance. I think however, if my bitch who is due, looses her singleton I MUST show it to her as this would be so difficult for her. (Yes, I'm prepared for the worst and hoping for the best).

Congratulations Becks! But you're not done yet :D My girl last year gave a bit of a scream with one of hers. I think animals are very stoic compared to people. Just remembering my times in the delivery suite listening to all the Who-haa as my delivery got closer. Not very reasurring!

Good Luck with the babes. I'm starting to get "restless" with a week to 10 days to go for my girl with her "little One"!

I guess it depends on the dog but there sure is a difference between my dog barking at say a Possum or someone he doesn't know coming onto the property! But if you want the dog to stop barking at the people coming onto the property, it's kind of useless then. True. Fortunately in my dogs case it was "Hey, everyone a possum just farted" come see! middle of the night kind of thing. If anyone decided to "drop in" in the middle of the night he sure would let us know!

Oh lovely babes, the lemon is a stand out!

Awwhhh! Saw you'd posted so jumped right in. Oh well, she'll go when she's ready! Thanks for the update.

I'm aware that it's not a zap and works more like a remote collar, but it is an easy way to describe what I mean. Well, I've touched an electric fence by mistake and accidentally triggered an electronic collar while I was holding it, and guess what? It was exactly the same feeling. A zap. It's a mild electric shock. You haven't touched our electric fence then...hardly mild, it knocked me over onto my back and left me with a gumboot on the fence with my leg in it still.

Also of interest is that there are various levels of de-barking AND that it isn't always permanent. Some dogs have their voice altered to a lower range, something that leaves them with a husky/raspy voice. Some are left with no voice at all. I have heard of cases where after time the altered voice has returned to full pitch.

I know, what a ridiculous, redundant law Just one of many in this State. Also it may be redundant but it's a NEW law!

In Your Opinion, Is The Term High Drive Used Loosely?
LizT replied to Bobby_The_Samoyed's topic in General Dog Discussion
Certainly there is "Breed tendency" and that is a guideline when choosing a breed as to what you are looking for. But then there is the individual and I have owned one of the most laid back easy going German Shepherd ever put on this planet (RIP Harley boy well see you again one day) and I now own one of the most "out there" Cavalier King Charles Spaniels who is just Go- Go- Go at the moment. And sometimes "High Drive dogs" will suddenly "chill" as their maturity and training reaches a point and you think you have a different dog. -
In some instances it is the best and only option available. Particularly if you have a number of dogs living together. Unfortunately in Victoria you have to "Jump through Hoops" to get your dog debarked. You have to first show and prove that ALL other options have been explored first. It is considered a "Last Resort" and no debarked dog is allowed in "Public Places" such as dog Shows. By definition that would include the local park. To my thinking it is far better than having an animal seized and PTS for being a nuisance. Of course if training methods, Bark Control Collars, medication etc. fail you can then get a certificate stating you have tried all avenues and then you may have your dog debarked. But forget about, showing, obedience, agility etc. with him. He/she is not allowed.
