Sorry. but showing a dog by the very nature of its activity is a great way to socialise a dog. Where do you get unsocialised Show Dogs???

Singleton Puppy Advice / Mothering Level Increasing
LizT replied to dennyhound's topic in Breeders Community
Good to hear. Maybe wait till your past the crucial first two weeks before bringing the holiday makers home. -
looks a hec of a lot like the ferret/polecat I had as a kid!!!

And then there is any appropriate health testing, heart, eyes, pattelars, depending on breed.

Show potential at a day old? Maybe I read it wrong, but I took it too mean that the puppy they eventually pick will (hopefully) be show potential. The breeder may have sent photos so they could look at markings and colours not so they could pick their puppy now. ETA: I find it interesting that some can pick a show potential puppy at birth, is this something you pick up after several litters or just a knack that you either have or not? You are probably right Tollersowned. I sent my puppy people pictures of the litter from birth and then at weekly intervals but they didn't know which was theirs until I decided much later.

Or she could always get a "Siberian Hamster" AKA rat as per "Faulty Towers".

I am NOT teaching my dog to open the fridge :p But otherwise, a good philosophy This is seriously true. A few years ago (less than 10) the people next door to my mother (immigrants from a war torn European country) got a puppy for their kids. They proudly called mum over to see the new puppy. Lovely said mum, what are you feeding it? "Oh, you have to feed it? I thought it would catch it's own food like a cat does", said the mother. Don't even get me started on the cat aspect of that statement!!!! Long story short mum taught them much and today they are really good pet owners and even take mums dog for a walk at times. However, they still make huge mistakes based on limited knowlege like mum forgetting to tell them not to let her rescue Cavalier off lead as Otis is shy of males and when the man next door took him and his dog to the local footy oval he let them both off lead for a run and Otis ran off and hid. It took him ages to find him and I'm sure he was very worried until his dog found Otis hiding under some bushes. My elderly and forgetful mother should have warned him not to let the dog off lead. Could have been a very sad outcome.

Show potential at a day old? Markings and colour and sex is about all you can tell at one day old.

There is a guy who walks around local park/lake here with four dingoes and a Maltese (SWF) type.

Worst Excuses For Re-homing Or Surrendering A Pet
LizT replied to PeiPei's topic in General Dog Discussion
It happens a lot - strays don't attract a surrender fee... I was at my local pound one day when a couple brought in a "stray" with a huge mammary tumour - once they'd signed the paperwork for dropping off the "stray", they asked if they would be allowed to adopt it from the pound if it's "owners didn't come get it" - the pound staff said no problems if they wanted to adopt the dog once it had served it's impound time... then the people said "so that thing on her belly will be removed before she's allowed to be adopted, right?", and the pound staff said "no, that will cost you extra"... funnily enough no-one heard from them again. Interesting note about that dog - she was the shyest thing with strangers, but had snuggled quite happily in the arms of the person who brought her in. We strongly suspect that they were the actual owners and were looking for a cheap way to get the mammary tumour seen to. Upside was that Millie was taken by rescue, had her surgeries for the tumour and desexing (separately)... and is now living the life of a totally spoiled princess in Townsville... *grin* T. As many have said before - Sometimes the best things that could happen to these lovely animals is to be rehomed so they can find a loving family. Just like this Sometimes. My daughter knows a family around the corner who seem to have a different dog every few months. They have no fences and the dogs they get are either Borer Collie, Kelpie or GSD crosses. The dogs are nuisences and often will run out at you if you walk by with your dog on lead. Their young daughter has often told my daughter "Oh, we gave so and so "away" cos he/she was no good but we are getting a new dog, yep, from the pound. They should run a "black list" at pounds for these types of people. -
Worst Excuses For Re-homing Or Surrendering A Pet
LizT replied to PeiPei's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hence I never understood the thread where a soldier had to give up his dog when he was posted overseas. Oversea is entirely different from Interstate. Clearly you cannot take your dog O/S. If he had no family to take it sadly he probably would have to surrender it. -

You would be amazed at how many people feed their dogs Vegan Kibble! -
fresh vs frozen when doing a TCI or fresh/natural mating vs frozen ? Fresh V frozen when doing AI. (in horses)

Go to any dog show and you will see that correct Poms are tiny things. There are so many larger BYB bred ones around now as pets that it would be easy to call the real deal "teacup". Teacup anything can exist if you breed for size. With a small sire and dam you will get a percentage of smaller pups and that is where they start to see the $$$ signs when there is a 'fad'. Way to cash in on the smaller pup of the litter that once would have been considered to be PTS or given away in some breeds. Here are two full sister Cavaliers from the same litter. Pick the "Teacup Cavalier".

I think it all comes down to the quantity and frequency of raw eggs. If a dog is eating one raw egg white once a week it will have little affect on him. If he is given a raw egg white daily his coat may become listless and dry. Raw yolk daily and his coat will gleam. Raw egg yolk once a week and you have just boost his protein for that day. In the wild no canine will have access to raw eggs year round. It is a seasonal treat to be relished and enjoyed en mass while the getting is good. All things in moderation.

what the 15kg bag? Unless you have a kennel load of dogs the 5kg should suit fine. Saying that it shouldn't cost that much anyway, it should be about around the $160 if I'm not mistaken? I had to feed some supercoat sensitive to my bitch after she got a great case of acidosis. Her coat has turned to absolute shite. It's dry and falling out, from glossy and deep tan colour to a washed out sandy too. Ugh can't wait for it to come back. Find a new veterinarian. If they cannot comprehend the fact a CANID eats some form of raw meat then he needs to hit a few more books. DOgs are not humans, they are not cats, they are not ferrets. All species have different needs. We CAN eat raw meat actually. The fact our meats are so contaminated because of the way they're raised and cleaned is the issue - some cultures do eat raw/pink/rare chicken and no one dies a horrible death because it's super fresh. Did you happen to mention we also eat sushi? Food doesn't even have to be raw for salmonela to grow on it in any case. We humans have an incredibly long digestive tract, that is how bacteria can thrive in there. Dogs are comparatively short and that is why food goes through them so quickly. When they eat they poo the previously digested food almost immediately. There's no room for it all in there. It literally is input/output with dogs. Bacteria has a hard time thriving in there. And dogs can "survive" on garbage if necessary. They certainly wont thrive on it though.

You shouldn't the whites have a component in them that blocks biotin (a B group vitamin) absorption. In the longterm if fed often (daily)not a good thing for their coat, once a week would not hurt, or benefit either. Just partially cook the eggs until the clear white turns solid white, you can give raw yolks that's fine.

I haven't feed any canned foods to my dogs in over 30 years. I used to feed canned food and some supermarket brand kibble but couldn't make the four hour drive to my ex's family's beach house without having to wind down the windows to stop me turning green. "Chum...farts so chunky you could carve 'em!" I switched to a better quality kibble and raw. They get either diced beef, chicken wings or necks and I have tried and liked, Hills, Advance, Royal Canin and currently very happy with Black Hawk. Interestingly Supercoat is probably the best supermarket brand of dry food you can get. When we adopted a rescue who had been on a diet of milk and scraps and had lots off teeth missing we found he got diarrhoea on the richer foods and settled well on Supercoat lite (he is old).

Amen to that sister!

I was just thinking how similar the comparisons are to new mother and new puppy owner. When you first have a child you read all the books, everyone is full of advice, you try to do it all! You stress and somehow manage to muddle through it all. So called "experts" give conflicting advice from year to year..."controlled crying...swaddling, demand feeding and nuturing, sleeping with mum".....the list is endless. Then when you have your second kid no one bothers you...they figure since you haven't killed your first you're an expert and leave you to it! Right now I'm juggling the balance between socialising a singleton puppy and leaving her confident and happy enough in her own company so she doesn't become a sookie lala pain in the butt. Of course all my hard work could become completely undone by a new owner sucumbing to the baby brow neyes at 8 weeks should she end up going to a pet home. Of course that possibility doesn't negate my responsiblity to her now.
