When I first started showing again four years ago I downloaded my Entry form from the Dogzvic website and all the info was included as you typed that in first. When I showed my Schipperke in the 1980's I had cheque book style forms. Easy. Anyway, I CUT IT OUT, and still copped abuse from a show Secretary as the form was not the correct size!!! It was about an inch higher and an inch and a half longer. So then I photo copied the form sent to me by Dogsvic and made a master copy leaving the class, signature and Show details blank to be filled in each time. I love being able to do an Oz entry but it does cost a bit more too. Recently a lovely Show Secretary rang me because I had left out the class number for one of my three dogs. Thanks lovely Show Secretary.

Excuse me, I am new to the Australian dog breeding/showing world. What does "main register" and "limited register" mean? If you have a quick to in the "Breeders Community" there is a recent thread asking just that very question? I'll 'Bump" it up for you. :)

The original Lassie story, "Lassie Come Home" was about a poor family in England who owned a beautiful Collie Bitch, and when the father went "missing" during the war, the single mother of one boy sold the dog because they could not afford to feed her to a rich Lord with a summer home in Scotland, where the dog was moved to his kennels, but she escaped and made the long, dangerous Journey back to her owner (the boy). The Original Movie mades starred Roddy McDowell and Elizabeth Taylor (of National Velvet fame), both well know British child stars of the day. Still a good read today.

Wouldn't surprise me at all though. I have a little statue of him that my siser in law brought back from Scotland for me. Oh well, at least we still have the dog who sits on the Tucker Box five miles from Gundagai....or do we. ;)

Again ... passing the buck ... let's take on an animal with a major problem and expect the fairys to come fix it and all the costly aftercare it will need!! If not, oh well we'll just let the animal potter on and do nothing about it. I don't expect much more from Frankston. And we don't know why the vet actually said to put them to sleep, for all we know there are bigger problems then being let on. The strange thing is just putting a story like that on TV will bring out the people with $$$ who would not even think to donate to a shelter or such.

What a heart wrenching story. I hope that their time together continues to be as wonderful as it is now. I'm saddened by the thought of one of them leaving this planet before the other.

Yes, and you can tell from the story that everyone who has taken on a puppy in the belief that funds will be raised for the operation needed.

I'm judging her, and I have every right to judge her. The woman used "GAP is full" as an excuse! What a misleading thing to say . Dishonestly trying to present herself as a person that didn't have the option of putting the dog in the program. She is a miserable low-life that doesn't value dogs unless she can make money from them. Disgusting. That's my judgement and I stand by it. :laugh: I guess she should have said GAP run at full capacity ... ..or maybe "GAP cannot take this dog, at this time now, and I have run out of options for her".... ..or "I am a miserable low-life that doesn't value dogs unless I can make money from them".... Who knows. I don't. If the options had run out it is because she didn't care enough to plan in advance, or is not willing to look after the dog for a few more months. As a Victorian racing participant she would have been informed in writing of what her options are so she could make plans at the appropriate time. She mentioned GAP as an excuse for what she did, and she did it dishonestly. She offered no other excuse. She expected people to accept that excuse, because people generally do not understand how to place a dog in GAP. But now everyone here has been informed of how GAP does work, her dishonesty has been revealed. Don't try to offer excuses for dishonesty even if you do excuse what happened to the dog. Okay, Greytmate..I'll stand beside you on this as I do see your point. I just hope she wasn't an owner who was going on the sayso of a trainer. That would make her both ignorant and stupid.

I know what you mean cowabree, I had a friend who was kept gundogs, he'd had pointers and curly coated retrievers and took terrific care of them and trained them well. But if the dog turned out to be "no good" (his words) a bullet would be allocated to it. One day while we were camping up at the Murray River he went off fora few hours and came back with a lovely Brittany Spaniel bitch, about 15 months old. The bitch and I spent the next few days bonding and I told him if she didn't work out he was to bring her to Melbourne to me. He promised. I saw him a year later and asked how the bitch was doing, he told me he'd given her a bullet, I paid out on him and told him he'd promised me but he said really, Liz the bitch was stupid and I was doing you a favour. He is a remarkable dog trainer, and his dogs will do whatever he says, to the point of fetching their own dinner bowls at feed time, but I guess he has the mindset of an old day farmer.

Male mammals need testosterone - think it through. If you took the gonads away from a male child what side effects would be expected? Old men have greater health issues as their testosterone levels drop - Some stats have placed male animal which are desexed before puberty at a 73% increase in HD. Its a bit different for females and in my opinion they are better off if not used for breeding to be desexed as they can actually draw estrogen from places other than their ovaries and there is a risk of various health issues. The point Im trying to make is that if its my dog I should be given the facts for and against.i should be informed of possible consequences if I do or dont and when is the optimum time frame.As an owner I should be able to make my own informed decision which is suited to my style of living, my family and my dog. Take a look at the links I posted earlier - the studies are there including a recent one which shows that bitches which are not desexed live much longer than those which do. I wouldnt allow a breder to take away my right to make the choice for my dog and I don't see why puppy buyers should be treated as idiots and potentially irresponsible in order for some breeders to "protect them " The other issue for me is that if someone wants an entire dog they will simply tell lies - if you leave the decision open to allow the buyer to become educated ad make their own choice there is no reason for them to tell a breeder lies so you can then decide if they want to sell them a pup based on the truth and not just what they know you want to hear. I to believe that owners should be informed of all potential health issues and outcomes but I do feel that there is an element of alarmist here. The vast majority of male horses are desexed at either weaning or six months of age, some later because they are quite unmanageable as entires and desexing quickly changes that. The gonads are not the only sourse of hormone production. Yep but it shouldnt be something someone else decides for you or gives you no choice on. Get informed - look at all the pros and cons and decide what suits you and your dog best. Im not saying dont desex Im saying full disclosure. "Get informed"...yes, and herein lies the problems. We are only as informed as the information we collect from various sources. The more we seek to enlighten ourselves the more conflicting the information becomes from the various professionals and experts we seek to learn from and whose opinions we depend so much on. We learn something, go with it, only to be told by the next opinion that we have missed something and are not fully informed, or that we don't have the complete picture of any given subject. Or that opinions have now varied on what we held to be true, until it comes back into vogue (or popular thinking) again, that is. It's enough to give most people a big headache some days. ;)

Good Luck with your mercy mission Romana. :) Are you talking about Swiss White Shepherd (recognised Registered breed here in Australia) or White German Shepherd (not recognised by GSD registry here in Australia) ? Both of which I love and they do have a common ancestory but have been bred along different lines for some time now, as you would possibly be aware. With reference to showing desexed dogs there are now special classes for neuters who can obtain a neuter title but this has been slow coming and not really well received up til now. I to think a neuter is a good example of it's sire and dam, but do need to have a class of it's own as do horses, separate for Satllions, Mares and Geldings.

It was Australia Day and I had gone for a picnic with my partner at a popular beach spot.I had left him to take Kenny for a stroll and I was surrounded by drunken abusive men calling me a w%&*e and a bitch for having a pitbull anywhere near children.One kept grabbing for the lead so I literally had to back up and run.It was quite scary really as their numbers kept growing as did the abuse.There was no use even explaining he isnt a pitbull as they had a skinful. That's terrible...they should have at least have listened to you tell them it is a Purebred Pharoah hound!!!!

I take it from your Avatar that you breed Kelpies. A working breed that is not subject to the overuse and abuse of Pet Shop Breeders and Puppy Farmers, nor is it a breed likely to become the next combination in the Designer Dog craze. I don't think your breed is going to attract anyone thinking of the easy money they will be making $$$$$ These are some of the considerations that need to be taken into account and contribute towards the feeeling of needing or not needing a contract. However, the contract is not the foundation on which the decision of whom to sell a puppy to is based on. That decision is made during the "interview" process when one finds out What the purpose of the puppy is? and wha kind of home is it going to. If it is purely for a pet, then the owner has more than likely already planned to desex the puppy in the future. When I was asked if I would put a puppy I was selling as a pet onto Main Register so the owner could breed a litter, I declined and explained that this was a nice puppy, but one I had rejected to keep on and breed, choosing a sibling instead. If I was to sell a puppy for breeding purposes on Main Register it needed to be at least as good as the one I had kept. I was flamed in a thread by many DOLers who said I should not go ahead with the sale of the puppy to this woman, she would go ahead and BYB it etc. etc. But I went ahead with the sale, as I did not want to disappoint this very nice lady who was smitten with her pup. She did not let me down and the puppy was desexed at 6 months. Sometimes you have to trust people, for the sake of your sanity, even with the risk that they will let you down, as enevitably will sometimes happen. :)

Would it stand up in court if I didn't refund the promised $100 refund on desexing as stated in my contract? My desexing contract promises I will refund $100 if the dog is desexed. Not that I will sue them if they don't desex it.

no not too much effort. But keeping in mind my dogs are my pets, not race dogs, if I had decided, for whatever reason I had to put a dog down, it would be because I thought it best for the dog and quite frankly would be most p!ssed off with a stranger telling me I was a bad person for doing so. I would have tunnel vision, it is such a hard decision to come too, I would not be in any state of mind to listen anyway. I have had racedogs offered to me when I've been at the track, that didn't impress me at all, they had no idea if I was a good home or not but because I made "clucky" ( what a handsome lad type things) noises at them they thought I'd want to take it home. I've been in similar situations with horses where people have contacted me offering me a horse because if I don't take it its going to be PTS. Sorry, but can't take on every one elses rejects, can I? I once had my ex's cousin on the phone late one night asking me to take on a blind foal colt that was going to be PTS. I spent a good deal of time kindly explaining to the young girl why this was really the best thing for the poor foal. Without really knowing the whole story behind Lucy, the Greyhound, no one should really judge. But I do believe the OP is right in her estimation that at least Lucys ending was not a violent or stressful event.

I used a desexing contract with my 5 puppy girls breed in Sept. 2010. I offered a $100 refund on presentation of a Veterinary Certificate if the puppy is desexed at 6 months. It is my promise to credit the money to the buyer if this is done. So far everyone has taken this offer up, and all four girls that were sold have been desexed.

It is terribly sad but this is part of the harsh reality of the Greyhound racing industry. There are always far more dogs than placements available and not all will pass GAP testing as suitable for pets either, so it's not even just a question of a placement at GAP saving the poor dog. Before organisations like GAP the situation was even more dismal for Greys. People did not know what lovely natured animals they are and no one wanted a breed that needed a muzzle to be walked in public as a pet. My OH's Grandfather raced Greyhounds in the 1930 -1950's and the land where he once lived is a vertible grehound cemetary of both unwanted puppies and adult dogs. Culling was the accepted practise of the time. The horse racing industry too has contributed much to the horse pet meat industry. I guess the big cats at Melbourne Zoo need to eat too. Not too long ago here in the Yarra Valley if a horse was put down by bullet it was used to fed the Hunt Clubs Hounds. Made sense to me at the time. The animals spirit had well and truly left it and it was being put to a useful purpose.

This from the country that has more lawyers per capita. I too think it's a beef up. Sad, it just gives trades a bad name. I mean you don't know both sides of the story, perhaps the toenails were so overgrown the quick was down low and nails then can bleed easily too. And I'm thinking a glue for 'nicks' too. A friend of mine cut his hand badly on some secatuers and the emergency room glued his cut rather than stitch it.

Physical eye screening doesn't pickup carriers of recessive diseases it only picks up affected. Interesting turn of phrase, Asal :laugh: Cataracts can happen in even the best lines where the problem has not been seen before and has apparently been recorded in more than 75 breeds of dog, so why would crossbred dogs be immune? Souff And this is why we screen (eye test) both parents annually AND eye test the whole litter at six weeks, cross our fingers, turn three times anti clockwise and hope for the best. It can happen to anyone. :)

The mixed breed terrier I had as a kid used to pig out on mums plums as they fell to the ground in the back yard. She'd poop out heaps each summer. I think being plums it helped it along nicely. When Crystal (Cavalier) ate a block of Olde Gold Rum 'n Raisin last year the vets put two Lecric Soda Crystals down her throat and she vomited within 10 minutes. There was "chocolate Pudding" everywhere at the vets! Hopefully your dog will pass the stone without any problems. At least if he is out of sorts you will know why and can then deal with it.
