  1. As I see it the problem is anyone capable of looking after a tribe of dogs probably has their own tribe of dogs to look after! :)
  2. By the same logic one should never feed bone and meat in the same meal - bone stays in the stomach until it is sufficiently broken down to move in to the intestine while the meat is broken down more quickly and moves on. The digestive system is a wonderful thing - especially the stomach acids of a healthy dog. Not necessarily- it takes much longer for kibble to digest and assimilate than bones and it requires different enzymes too. I would have though "meat and bones" are a "complete package" since they do come together!
  3. Awww..lovely Rebanne. We have a lovely old photo of my OH grandfathers bitch "Farnham Lass" that raced. She looked like that! I'll have to take a picture of my MIL 'Willow" next time I go visit. She's a mini version (whippet).
  4. You could almost be talking about Mr Ellz. THE biggest cat hater on earth!!! Now to be seen watching TV at night with my Devon Rex curled up on his chest, gently stroking his beard with her paws!  It's almost like the cat in question seeks them out to brainwash reprogram convert!
  5. I love all dogs and am never surprised when a particular pesonality and I really BOND. However I love observing this phenonomen in "dyed in the wool breed lovers" who stumble across a breed they believed they would never be drawn to and have fallen in love. I witnessed this once in a house mate who absolutely HATED cats and shot ferals and would never own one but bonded and became great mates with my cat during the year we lived together. His girlfriend laughed whenever she saw him watching TV, there would be his Basenji, him and my cat on his lap!!!
  6. Congratulations! So nice for you to be having a new friend soon. Affys are such sweeties and we don't see enough of them.
  7. I wrote a fair bit on my experiences in a thread I did on socialisation and the singleton when Emmalee was born last November/December. Ther was also a fair bit of other DOLers experiences to read about. Might be able to dig it up in a 'singleton' search.
  8. Probably a bunch of boring blue brindles with white trim! But i love my blue brindles! Lovely, that's the colour we chose when we bought Granny her whippet puppy. Turned out it was the same colour as Grandads very sucessful racing greyhound and they were so pleased when we brought her home as a surprise (don't worry they had hinted mercilessly  ) New mum to be is huge! I wouldn't be surprised if there is more than three pups in there at all. With the singleton she didn't even loose her figure, this time she is going to have to work hard to get her body back on the catwalk!
  9. Our older bitch who is great mates with the younger was very excited when Crystal had her pup last year and came into the room and seemed intent to get to the pup. Fortunately we put a pen around the whelping box so it is a barrier just in case. Her body language did not fill me with confidence as she seemed to have that overly fast tail wag and stiff body. After a few more day and a couple more supervised visits she seemed to relax more, but it did occur to me that she may have either killed the pup or upset the new mother enough to distrupt her bonding. We have three gates between the whelping box and main living area as extra protection. Once the pup was up and running she received heaps of attention from the baby and she seemed happy about it.
  10. Ewww...that is VERY important information! One important thing to remember is that they have a much shorter intestinal tract than us so it's all going through pretty quickly by comparison, so anything that seems to satify us longer wont necessarily be the case with dogs.
  11. I don't think stillborns or pups deceased post birth are required to be listed in any way. There is certainly nothing on the form that makes any inquiry of this possibility.
  12. How loose is loose? Not bothered by the hips if there are no symptoms ... but what is the situation with the Elbows? And why keep him restricted? :) If you are on a large property let him move at his own leisure and develop muscle capacity. If the dog cannot live a relatively comfortable life, and even if the dog COULD you cannot give him to a friend who understands the situation and you cannot keep him, then I would pts. Agree. Also how does one 'tell' a young Border Collie he is unable to run and jump and romp and play?
  13. When I had a dog (Border Collie X ACD) with alleries she was put on a diet of roo meat and sweet potatoe. She was never hungry but lost a heap of weight, despite never being 'fat' and looked like a real working dog. Fortunately it was only a short term thing but I found it interesting and thought it would make a terrific weight reduction diet without risk of allergies to boot.

  15. That's interesting Steve, I do that by instincts  I just figured one type of food at a time since it was different and guessed it must have a different digestive time.
  16. Cavalier: One, but you'll have to do it later, after I've got off your lap as it's snooze time now.
  17. As Alyosha mentioned, they are in fact RAVENS as we do not have crows in Australia. And yes, they will attack anything that appears vunerable to them. They are known to go after lambs.
  18. I used to give finely diced beef mince, I was told chicken would be easier to stomach. However with the last pup I gave her minced turkey, which you can now buy in the supermarket and this is a great hit. :)
  19. Yes, they are amazing. And on the other side of things my singleton only used four nipples, in rotation herself and the remaining nipples simple did not produce milk, dried up and no expressing or interference required from me.
  20. I've purchased a number of items from the US with no problems at all. I think there is a risk with any internet purchase and I have a Credit Card I use with a very limited amount availble for this purpose only. The bank has shut it down three times now as it has come up with attempted hacking (along with 100's of others) and they intercepted the attempt and issued me with another. I would never use my main account on line.
  21. I agree Oakway, this may just be an innocent murmur, that will most likely be gone at 12 weeks and it is not uncommon. That said, if it were my pup, I'd be refunding the deposit and awaiting the 12 weeks to decide on the future of the pup. I can't think of any reason why I would make a deposit "non refundable" if there was a potential health issue.
