I find they tend to 'suck up' the milk on a soaked kibble. How is she doing RoseRed?

Yes, just becuase they "used to" club them on the head and throw them in a ditch doesn't mean that practise is still acceptable.

I'm sure we would all agree here on this forum that dogs are very intelligent animals. So in that vein, what would the 11th dog waiting to be shot be thinking as all the others meet their fate? As was showed in the cows in Indonesia footage each cow that came for the kill appeared to be terrified. Stop for a moment and contemplate the horror. This is very true, and any animal that is transported before slaughter that is unused to travel, such as cattle make for a tough steak. Home slaughtered meats on unstressed animals are always better. I would imagine this would also apply to any number of animals being PTS en mass, regardless of the methods applied.

You are right, these drugs are potentially very dangerous and would not be released to anyone but a vet. Shooting is very quick and humane if done properly, not my euthanasia of choice but if I was a reasonable from a vet and had say a dog who had a 1080 bait then I would get the dog shot rather than put them through the symptoms of poisoning and the drive to the vet for euthanasia. We have a vet 15 kms away and if I have a cow who needs euthing they are shot with a high powered rifle standing in the paddock. If I was to get the vet out I would have to get them into a crush then they would require and IV injection - very difficult with an animal not used to being handled int hat way. In this circumstance I think the Ranger was an idiot and what he did was completely unnecessary and dangerous. I knew a vet who used to keep a handgun in a safe at his office (years ago) if called out to PTS a large animal he would often prfer this method, less risk of convulsions and injury to himself. I wonder however, if said Ranger had been directed to do as he did or whether he was making decisions himself?

It takes a fair bit of skill to use a firearm efficiently, bullets are not cheap either. You have to jump through hoops to have a firearms licence these days too, so I can't imagine it is just about the money.

I see, yes she may lap milk. Poor bub. Hope she comes good.

What do you mean?? The report says they are banned from owning any dogs, cats puppies or kittens except the ones they already own???? 103 cats and 87 dogs is going to go a long way! Now I am even more confused Sorry how does your comment relate to Gecko's assertion that Dolers portray themselves as worldly but yet are naive. I don't think anyone was disputing that people can put their puppy farm - or whatever - business into another name. I am obviously missing something :D Sorry, should have quoted further back. Gecko was saying that they can still own animals if they are in another name. The paper report states they can also keep the animals they already own. I find this surprising given the severity of their case.

This. There are far more inhumane ways to dispose of an animal than a quick bullet but these circumstances are a different issue entirely.

I'd be inclined to give her private feeding time with mum rather than any formula. Good luck.

 Maybe the stork got his bundles mixed up! :D They look lovely Ruth. Glad it all went well.

I thought I saw 5 too. Good luck also. :)

Tentapride could be correct, she may have got some milk in her lungs. Best get a vet to check her as soon as available, just to be sure. I doubt it's anything contagious, but if you feel she will be warmer with a hot water bottle it might be best, rather than apart from the comfort of the litter.

Lovely, sounds like he has turned a corner. So many obsticles for a new life to overcome. :)

Looks like he's doing okay. I forgot to ask..what breed is he? :)

Not that any dog looks good overweight but it would be most dreadful on any type of sighthound build.

All the checks and balances, improved systems whatever cannot stop someone from falsifing records should they be of an ilk to do so. Only mandatory DNA parentage testing could prevent the substitution of Sire and Dams names on Registration forms. Surely, it hasn't come down to that yet. At his stage, as in the past it is still up to the integrity and honesty of those who are breeding for the betterment of their breed and not just the money from pups and stud fees.

Thank you. No, the BH bag is half finished. When fasting, how long before i will see the results of the stool firming up? 24 hours seem to be a long time without food for my ever hungry schnauzer (i'm sure he won't be too happy about that). The poo isn't watery, its runny solid type. I also fast for 24 hours and then feed boiled chicken and rice. This usually binds them for a few days followed by firm stools. I keep them on it for 4-5 days and slowly reintroduce small amounts of dry foods.

Agree. Any amount of her milk he gets is going to benefit him greatly. Try one of the middle teats.

Actually Ithought they were highly unlikely to get fat myself , as my Mother-in-laws Whippet is always turning down all the treat my MIL gives her and buries them when MIL isn't looking! We always say we are glad we didn't give her a Cavalier.

:) Was it a natural delivery or a C-section? Thinking in terms of mums milk coming in. Hopefully he will get strong enough to have a drink from her soon.

Congratulation Ruth and Patches! :)

Tube feed him rather than trying to bottle him. Sucking uses energy, energy is needed for growth. Was hoping tube feeding, especially if his sucking reflex is not strong. Is there any chance of expressing a bit of mums milk for the anitbodies? I'd say keep doing what your doing, make sure he stays warm and with mum. A few rice bags near him will substitute his siblings, and if he gets strong enough to try to suckle on mum she will be there for him. Fingers crossed for the little one. Also I found with my pup that had a cleft palate it wasn't that his sucking reflex wasn't strong..he tried..he just couldn't get a suction seal happening.

Sorry to hear of your loss. How is the remaining pup doing this morning? What method of feeding are you using and is there any chance of him getting some of his mums milk into him?
