  1. Moths give me the heebee geebies...but yeah it's one cool little dude alright.
  2. Some breeders use Early Infant desexing because tehyare concerned about their dog being used for breeding. Correct me anyone if I'm wrong , but this would be of a higher concern with breeds that a currently more popular than a smooth coated collie and likely to be used in a Designer DOg or BYB situation. I don't believe the Smooth Collie is currently in such high demand. Also while not doing any 'harm' it doesn't do much good either, short of ensuring the dog is 100% desexed. I have a popular breed, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and although not breeding any large amounts, careful buyer screening and a desexing contract has not let me down as yet. Some breeders like to use tubal ligitaion in bitches and a vasectomy in dogs.
  3. There is no mention of infant desexing. I would imagine it is to be desexed and in a desexing contract to be done at 6 months. But yes, speak to your breeder, tell her your thoughts. The dog can always be transferred once from Limited to Main Register too by the breeder. The OP states the puppy will be neutered before leaving the breeder. Not something I would want in a breed as big as a Collie. Sorry, re-read post. Totally agree with you. I wouldn't even do it to a Toy breed.
  4. I think the dynamics of how well any number of dogs work depends on the age and breeds of the dogs primarily. Some just get along better...older dogs "get it" with regards to "House Rules" and currently I am all puppied out!
  5. I was pretty stoked on Saturday. Little Emmalee won her puppy class, then got her first ever Reserve Challenge at 9 months and went on to win Puppy In Group!
  6. Sometimes a pregnant bitch need her space. I do think though that a yellow ribbon tied onto a lead doesn't look all that different to a poop bag.

  8. True. Of little use without Pulic education ie. TV campaign. If they want to look they are truly trying to help solve problems with dogs the authorities should embrace these concepts. Will only work in a Club at this stage. Our German Shepherd Club uses a green bandana.
  9. Are you also using a Flea and Tick protection on your dog? If so the tick may be coming in contact and dying quickly. Lets hope.
  10. My girls (Cavaliers) usually start to grumble at th pups at about 4 weeks. This coincides with the introduction of solids. They eat more solids, start drinking water (I use cooled boiled at first) and then they begin to just have an occassional feed from her. They are usually weaned at 6 weeks with maybe one or two short quick attempts at mobbing mum before she and they mutaully stop feeding. I any of the nipples look engorged I let one pup take off a tiny bit until the teats become softer and more comfortable for mum.
  11. Congratulations again BB. Fingers crossed they grow and thrive. Crystal need to have a big talk with Rosie I think. ;)
  12. That is a very easy statement to make from your rational point of view. The point of this is the fact that sadly, these people are not rational and the situation they have put themselves in is often times borne of good intentions coupled with a massive dose of denial, then when thing get out of control it does finally come to light, it is a huge mess that needs to be delt with delicately.
  13. Some are and some aren't. The thing is that commonly the "hoarder" is unable to recognise the cruelty and neglect they are often inflicting on the animals. They get overwhelmed and unable to cope and really need an outside person - such as a therapist in these cases - to provide that "circuit breaker" as often they will not listen to family members - and family members often are not assertive enough in dealing with the "hoarder". It is interesting that in this show they try to find reasons for the onset of the behaviour - such as some trauma in childhood etc. What I find interesting is that these people develop these obsessions whereas many other people experiencing a similar amount of trauma do not, or perhaps not to this extent anyway. Also I wish they had some sort of follow up on the outcome for the animals e.g. how many were actually rehomed. I think people react to trauma in differnt ways...I was reading a while back about teenage pregnancies and their need for "unconditional love"...the kind you would only get from a child...or domestic pet.
  14. Remember* With any weight loss it is slow and steady that wins the race. Though it seems "good' too much too soon isn't really the best option for man (woman) or beast. :) Glad your boy is feeling more comfortable and less crotchety.
  15. Congratulations BB and Rosie girl.
  16. I have not had just one dog since I was 14. (I am 51) Sometimes, (just sometimes) I wonder what it would be like to dedicate ALL my dog time to just one dog. Hmmmm...nah! :D
  17. Very tricky. As far as they see it they're helping Yes, from what I gather "friends" have been dumping unwanted cats and kittens on her!
  18. Desexing is usually recommended at 6 months so as to ensure it is done BEFORE the first heat. This is a way of protecting the bitch against mammary cancer. If it is done AFTER the first heat the risk of mammary cancer is increased. With larger breeds the first heat is often later than 6 months but six months is a generalisation. Speak to the breeder, sometimes we have to weigh out one thing against another, in larger breeds sometimes the growth rate is of concern and later desexing is recommended, that said, desexing her at 6-7 months won't have any huge detrimental affect on her well being. Many studies have been done, but much of it is anecdotal.
  19. My sons girlfriend has a friend who "Saves" cats. Problem is she doesn't desex them because "She can't afford to"...so they are having kitten willy nilly and she has about 30 cats now. This girl needs help. I've suggested to my sons girlfriend to talk to the Cat Protection Society" and ask them for advice. Very tricky sitiuation when friends are involved.
  20. no it isn't. Steve has previously posted a photo of a beagle crossed with something else that to all intents and purposes looked loke a beagle. There were two? photo's posted, one was a pure beagle, one was not. And it was nigh impossible to tell the difference. Yes, at a Puppy School I once attended there was a Cavalier/Pug X Pug...it looked like a little black Pug, yet it was 1/4 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
  21. Have read this post but haven't chimed in as not much to add that hasn't been said....except... wow...what interesting markings your fellow has. :)
  22. Don't fight it. Let the pain take you to wherever you need to go. You have my heartfelt sympathy.
