Should I Or Shouldn't I? Any Thoughts Appreciated.

LOL Yep. Dylan learnt some new things today! Lifes lessons for Dylan: 1. Bossy lady doesn't really want you eating disgusting smelly dried up entrails 2. When Bossy Lady tries to take disgusting entrails off you don't dart away like it's a funny game 3. Bossy Lady doesn't like you taking smelly animal remains into the back of the car. 4. Dont mess with Bossy Lady after a 2 hour walk on a hot day when she's tired and grumpy and hasn't eaten yet!!!!! and the BIGGEST lesson..... 5. If you do all of the above and dart away from Bossy Lady when she's trying to get entrails off you and get you in the car Bossy Lady will pack everyone else into the car and drive off and leave you there. End result, Dylan has to run a LONG way to find out where Bossy Lady and the gang disappeared to - sans disgusting entrails!!!! Watch out for CCTV's LOL. They'll get you for 'dumping your pooch"! (ref. story in UK where very nasty man drove off and left his dog ) BTW Did you know "Dylan" means "Son of the Wave". Legend is he was the twin of the sun who went to live in the sea. His uncle killed him and when he died it was said that all the seas wept. -

When my youngest Cav went to 'puppy pre-school', the trainer who runs it had ALL 8 week old puppys of all breeds and mixtures doing this. My little girl learnt so quickly I was amazed! Others did to to varying degrees too. Dogs are such smarties aren't they. -
Hope he heals soon, just curious as my GSD gets "sebaceous cysts' on the skin and these 'pop' like a fatty pimple. As they are on the skin where 'sebum' is excreted it makes sense, didn't know this could also happen on an eye area though?? It does look a bit like an ulceration to me?? The cortisone will cetainly help, I've had my share of 'eye' issues this year with two of my cats. One had a similar looking problem and it was an ulceration, all healed now but was a long process, involving 'surgery' and the eyelid being stitched shut to aid healing. Oh, I guess if the cyst is on the eyelid it would irritate the eye, I 'see' now. Ingrown eyelashes do that to some Cavaliers. Poor fella.

I know what you mean...it's a toss up between "I hope he was scared and NEVER EVER does that again" OR "I hope he isn't afraid to have a play in safe water!" And you with mixed emotions between the two! -

Exactly! Dogs were never bred down the ages to be farmed, we befriended them as a pack animal and took them into our pack. The whole pyscology is different. Certainly chickens need to be farmed with more consideration towards humane conditions. This is s l o w l y happening, although I'm not overly impressed with what passes for "barn laid' at times and free range is sometimes an "eat at Joes' invitiation to foxes. And finally, my chickens ARE cute! Lovely little brown hens that come running up to me and let me pick them up and pat them. :p -

Or will he.... Was it scary for him or just bag loads of fun!! Certainly was extremely scary for you SC. Glad you didn't jump in....cold water can weaken the strongest swimmers...that river looks like it has quite a pull. Dylan may have ended up saving you. -
Lots of good products on the market but the ones NOT to use are any with Citronella in them...while it is a kind natural repellent and some people love the smell it is used as a pet repellent for cats and dogs to keep them of furniture etc, also as a negative reinforcement in bark control collars ..Why? because dogs absolutely HATE the smell and will avoid it at all costs. Certainly not something you want to put on them then, they'd be miserable.

Well Liz, first you get a boy dog.....and then you get a girl dog......and........ Oh as simple and that...reckless and careless owners.. I see. I actually posted the advert for the pups a few pages back, it was a Dashy cross crested, I even phoned the woman way back then!! I see, just updated myself on Xenas storys..well done Megs...she is looking so much the better for the correct care she is getting. Wazzat Xolo, are they being DD'd now then??

Really Worried About Rover :( Healing Vibes Needed
LizT replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Any recommendations? There is no point in starting it until you've finished the antibiotics. The abs do not discrimate between "bad" bacteria and "good " bacteria generally speaking. I have some PAW probiotics (you are welcome to have- they didn't do anything for my dog) but persoanlly i think those human-grade ones that are kept refrigerated are probably better, there are a couple of brands but i have used inner-health plus before with success. I hope Rover is feeling better today! I have heard this. But I've also heard to the contrary - that there IS a point to starting with pro-biotics even whilst on antibiotics. Also, different situation but also linked....my son was on a long term antibiotic for acne and was advise to take a continous course of probiotics at the same time. -

How is your boy doing this afternoon? Feeling much better I hope. :p -
What a sweet and unusual little creature she is! Probably one of the strangest crossbreed I've heard of...how did she come about?
-
Well excuse me Sir, but all my Dog (and cat) wastes are composted!!!

Yes, it is all about body weight...I had a little dog eat the granule type horse all wormer that you mix in horse feeds. She ate it out of a feed bin in a yard that was for a horse that was extremely difficult to worm....another organophosphate poisoning...luckily we were there and saw her staggering around so got her to the vets immediately...she was still very sick though due to her small size but pulled through albeit with damaged vocal cords.

There is still every chance...where there is life there is hope. They may have some risidual problems like needed gentle diets for quite some time etc. but don't ever give up. My Skipperke ate snail bait (shared driveway with neighbour) and was deathly ill but she pulled through..there is always a chance.

Rare Special Needs Breeds In Pet Shops
LizT replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
i bought my cavalier x poodle (vet told me she can not see any poodle in her at all) from a pet shop (i have since been educated in regards to why this was the wrong thing to do) and i was not given much information in regards to grooming, BUT, when i got home and got her to sleep that night i got on the internet and looked up as much information that i could, brought the required combs and comb her every second, day, i have booked her into a groomer that i use for my cat, and she has her first appointment in 4 weeks, i have bought books on how to care for cavaliers, bathing, grooming, training, ect i understand that some people fail to treat their pets with respect but not all do, people need to realise that it is their responsibility to care for the puppy and to find as much information as possible, i have found many sites very helpful, including this one, found many books helpful, as well as talking to people who own such breeds No i did not get any information but it did not stop me from finding it out myself mollie is so spoilt and is well groomed and well loved See that is what sensible, intelligent people do.....happy to see there are still some out there! I will admit that I actually made some enquiries into a Cavalier X Poodle (I refuse to use the 'melded' word) before I purchased my first Cavalier as I was torn between the two breeds but my youngest daughter, then age 7 said she really wanted a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel....and well the rest is history. If your Vet doesn't see poodle in you little girl you may be blessed with a dog that has thrown to her Cavalier ancestory and may have a coat that is easier to manage than most Cavaleir X Poodles are. Although bear in mind that when you have her desexed often the Cavalier coat becomes heavier in the neuter and you may then need the help of a professional to teach you to manage it. -
Oh they would too! Mine look like a cross betwen "Bambi" and a "speed Skater"...it get a bit too vocal which I think was the issue and even though I trim the hairs between their pads they still go sideways on the turns.....polished timber floors I'm afraid. Although this "accident" was due to a 'quick turn and flee' rather than an 'out of control' slide.

Oh yes, didn't you know....our local Pet Shop at the Large Shopping Centre, nearest to where I live has a huge sign in it's window stating that it is opposed to Puppy Farms, that it supports "Oscars Law" and that all their puppys come from homes that they have done checks on...ie. BYB. Funny how they don't mention how many litters each bitch has over what period of time though! Apparently this makes it all okay.

Agree 100% Excellent...sleep without worry. ;)

The thing about any type of 'automatic' watering system (and I learnt this with horses) is that you have no idea how much water the animal is drinking and if they are drinking excessively or not enough. This can often be an important piece of information you don't have, particularly if the animal becomes unwell.

Yeah...and he said it at the Vets too...and the Vet add..."well not this week anyway"! LOL I must admit I was pretty angry with him at the time but I could see he was beating himself up too 'cos when I said "if she's got a serious problem I may not forgive you" ...and he added..."I may not forgive myself". He is quite relieved.

She's much better this morning, the squinting has stopped, not sure if it's because of the painkillers or eyedrops or both but she's definitely happier! ;) I have to admit if I hadn't been so worried I would have been chuckling at her...she did look comical staring at me through squinted eyes. She did that once in the Show Ring on a very sunny day last summer, facing the full glare of sun and the Judge let us all go stand in the shade outside the ring after we'd done our individual workouts!
