  1. I had a read through there. Thanks. Seems there are marked difference in the personalities of the three sizes and two different coat types??
  2. My husband used to have similar symptoms when he let his old cat sleep on the bed (there was cat hair everywhere on an old woollen blanket he kept for the cat to sleep on) and ultimately the cat ended up on his chest! He sounded like he was going to cough up a lung! He blamed years in the timber industry (wood dust) but I suspected the cat. So did the Doctor who said it was an allergy to cat danders. When the old cat passed away these symptoms continued until he moved in with me. I vacuum alot more than he did LOL  Slowly the symptoms subsided and we have Cavaliers on the bed at times now but he doesn't cough anywhere near as bad as he did back then. I believe Bart Cummings is allergic to horses and has daily injections!
  3. One of my sisters says she is thinking about getting a Schnauzer and has spent a few hours talking to a breeder when she visited the Royal Melbourne Show last September. She has been bouncing back and forth about which breed to get for many years and has gone from CKCS (moults too much) to Poodle to Westie to various others. She now says they are seriously thinking about getting a Schnauzer and that this is the breed for her. Possibly (my thoughts). She has been told that they do not shed. They have no (doggie) smell. The coat is harsh when stripped as per a Show dog but soft when clipped. That the male is a better option than a female (personality wise) I know that Schnauzer are a great little dog and make a fantastic family pet, are these facts true about them? What else can you tell me about them? She says she is getting the Medium size not the 'toy' (?) or Giant. I thought there was only Miniature or Giant??
  4. Hmmm....although I do see a correlation between the RSPCA and stumbling around in the dark!
  5. I'd not criticise him for trying the crossbreeding. It's not his fault the idea took off with the wrong people. ;) Yes, Poodlefan, you are right. It's all about that powerful tool called "Marketing" where there is money to be made....as they say, the rest is history.
  6. I was in there the other day, they still had Registration forms with only 24 spaces on it. It's been 30 for 2+ years now. That's annoying! There I was counting up letters and discarding the 25 letter names for my first litter.
  7. Where does any dog come with a guarantee that it will grow up and mature to be what you like in a dog??? Yep, tell 'em they're dreamin'! (hypothetically of course )
  8. Really they can't "Police it" but I can see where this comes from. There are plenty of "Nuff Nuffs" out there who lack experience and knowledge but are always willing to try to save a few dollars resulting in botch jobs of all kinds. I'm sure they exist in the Dog breeding world too. It is just a pity that legislation also get those with experience, the know how and technique to do a job, (any job) caught up in it's tangled web. I mean "technically" it's illegal to change a light bulb in Australia if you are not an electrician.
  9. Thanks, here is what it says. Is removing dew claws on a 2 day old puppy really surgical? Well essentially it is the removal of a 'limb' albeit a very teeny tiny one. Technically it's surgery.

    Mum Pups Dumped

Every shop that sells dog food could have a notice to the effect of what you have posted here RSG. And every community notice board at country pubs. If the message only reached 50% of those who dump dogs on the side of the road, then the situation would be 50% better than it currently is. Souff Right on Souff I think the stigma associated with "surrendering dogs" has long since subsided and there should be more public awareness that this is an option open to all.

I don't believe there are deterents against doing 'evil' acts. People need to learn correct behaviour and common kindness at an early age or they never get it. Sadly children learn by example and some just don't get a good example of cherishing lifes values or the correct way to handle the ;) problems life throws at you. When you show these horrible scenarios to a decently raised person they are outraged because it defies their understanding of common decency.
  12. I don't want people on my property when I'm out. Arrangements for delivery, or collection, if you have dogs, is not just prudent; in the long run it may well prove extremely economical. If its not worth the effort, then exactly that, its not worth the effort. In this day of Internet Shopping so many parcels have to be signed for and people just are not at home the way they used to be, most families have two working partners....and yet you would be amazed how many people "crack it' when they have to go and collect from the P.O. !! ;) Idolatry takes many forms. Alive but not living. I'll make sure he is, he'll be chuffed! I'm pretty sure it ws a fear attack, the poor dog probably thought this stranger was going to "finish him off" while he was vunerable! ;) Yah. I did it! Thanks. Although single posts could be the personal touch. heheheh Still needed my daughters help doing it though. :D BTW. Spoke to postie this morning and dog was stuck by leg not collar and he was a small cross breed terrier type. Postie not angry and not following it up with owners. Which he should (IMO) but he figures they weren't home at time as they surely would have heard poor dog, as he was sreaming". Dog settled and was quite as postie lifted him off fence but took a swipe as he passed mans face. Postie feels it was fear aggression too.
  13. ;) Constantly.....and the kids..and the hubby...and the horses. Sometimes I feel like too many 'souls' depend on me. What happened to the carefree free spritied young woman??? Long gone.
  14. Found this interesting about "feet'. My old GSD had a colapsing sacrum and during the last few years of his life most of his weight shifted to his front end and this made his front feet very muscled and large. A comment my Vet pointed out prior to our acknowlegement that it was"time" for him. A SBT appears, to my eyes anyway, to be "front heavy", does this account for the importance of his front feet and the apparent strength in them??
  15. We need more members - members equal votes. Well then we need to make things more attractive to people who buy dogs on LR. They have a door slammed in their faces if they even show the remotest interest in becomming a breeder or wanting a dog to Show. Everone runs around in circles yelling BYB, or Puppy Miller at the first inquiry!! No wonder membership has dropped.

  17. I don't get why people do this. I recently caught this old lady hitting my dog on the face with an umbrella (which he managed to grab and tear, having been trained to deal with being hit with objects). When I confronted her, she said she was scared (but she could have easily just avoided him, instead, she aggravated him). I told her that if she does it again, I'll simply let him out (I won't, but I obviously don't want this lady hitting my dog). One of my dogs functions is protection- he is trained to do so. This is because I've had someone that tried to steal my cars on two occasions, on the third he was caught red handed, I won't go into details, but let's just say I gave my dog a big juicy steak that night. Yes I have an alarm system, but that is not an immediate deterent. My dog is only out at night, or when nobody is at home. I knew someone years ago who trained Rotties for Security purposes. I dropped into their place for the first time unannounced, not realising that there were dogs "patrolling" or what he did for a living. The dogs 'baled me up" , I spoke gently, averted eyes and walked past them to the back of the property. When his wife saw me she was very surprised and asked "How did you get past the dogs?" Her husband grinned at me and just said "Some people can". I used this technique many times while being caught by surprise when doing the Census. Many a head down and slowly back away used then!
  18. LOL My Postie used to do this years ago with my now deceased German Shepherd when he was a youngster. I was wondering why we were have so much trouble with "food refusal" in obedience training!!!

  20. Does he come in still or is he just "estimating"which is something I believe they do with a "do not read' order??
  21. Oh, you would also know the perils of dogs on the road chasing bikes......we've had a couple of very nasty injuries (falls from bike) due to that one.
  22. I think most people would not know if the dog had just lost consciousness or been in real peril and close to death and would have ended up being bitten as well.
  23. Yes, you can "card" parcels if there is a problem. OH just write "Dog unfriendly", and makes a mental note to himself. Problem is if it's a new place he hasn't been or sometimes the dog wasn't at large the last time he called there.
  24. Yesterday one of my 'guys' (I 'm a night sorter for AP) rode his Motorbike along the front of two homes and a dog ran along the front fence, jumping up at the fence and barking. I'm sure you've all seen some dogs doing this as you walk by their homes. Anyway, today this dog was unlucky (and so was the Postie) as on one jump the dog managed to 'hang' itself by the collar on the fence. When the Postie saw this he thought, "Poor dog, I can't leave him like that he'll choke and die." End result is Postie got bitten on the face, requiring stitches, as he released the dog. Sorry didn't get details of breed and size of dog. Many other Posties said he was stupid to go near the dog and should have left it there and other very negative and unkind comments along with many renditions of "Who let the dogs out". Apparently no one was home at the house either. Dogs and Posties have a long standing problem but most Posties own dogs and are doglovers (at least their own!) My OH does parcel deliveries and is often "held up" by dogs of all sizes. Sometimes this is quite worrying as he must deliver to the front door and often there are no closed gates or signage to indicate there is a dog that may have access to him. When the owners are home and he is baled up he gets stupid comments like "He's just doing his job"! So am I retorts my husband as the dog is holding onto his pants etc.!!! Just this week as he got out of his van a man yelled out to him.."Just stand still". He did and a Staffy came rushing up at him and grabbed him by the foot holding on to his steel capped boots which he sometimes changes into runners for comfort and the dog refused to let go. Apparently this was a rescue dog that doesn't like boots!! OH said he wouldn't have liked to put runners to the test with him either!! If this is how the dog behaves it's no surprise if he's worn a few pairs of boots either. Why do some pet owners think their 'Fidos" are going to be sweet little darlings when a delivery or metre reader arrives?? Worse still why do they stand there making excuses for their pets behaviour instead of apologing profusely and controlling their dogs or restraining them?? My husband is a huge dog lover and has made many "doggie friends" with his regulars and their owners but sometimes he wishes he had a can of citronella spray or something to protect himself with??
