  1. I think that the direction I am taking could not be done by the AKNC. I do see your point now regarding purebred awareness and what you were getting at, through what Oakway has posted and thinking about my own pet choices the purebreeds certainly enrich the variety of dogs available for different ownership circumstances and the reliability of the breed standards to know what you are getting.
  2. Absoultely agree with the suggestions regarding photos and records however it does sound really over the limit. As long as you stay firm, friendly and assertive you have every right to say that this is not necessary. I would be stating my case, first to the Real Estate managers regarding your concerns. See if you can get them or the owner to address the issue, otherwise I would visit the owners of the dogs in question and let them know what happened. You have every right, especially if you have animals (and your poor Mum ). It is really their problem if they can't handle you coming to see them with your concerns. Growling like that is alarming!! ETA If the owners should get stroppy or reactive, you cn always say "Look I've already had your dog growling at us, I really don't need you to start as well...!!:
  3. I often feel that the whole debate needs to stepout of purebred versus crossbreeds (often generalised as the results of BYB, puppy mills etc. just as purebreds are often sited as the result of close inbreeding and looks prioritised over the purebreds health). I honestly think that the healthy breeding conversation needs to evolve beyond this dichotomy/ polarity and embrace an ethical breeding approach. Afterall, the majority of dog owners are pet owners and want healthy companions. I believe the world will also always have dogs that are both purebred and crossbreeds and myths and gross generalisations occupy both sides of conversation. The debate over breeding will stay stuck in this "versus" and not address what I see as the underlying concern: ethical breeding of the healthiest dogs possible. I hope that this isn't seen as a hijacking of this thread as it is not intended to be so
  4. It's against the ANKC code of ethics http://www.ankc.org.au/About-ANKC/National-Code-of-Ethics-of-Responsible-Dog-Ownership.aspx Point 11 Edit to change point 12 to point 11 But I mean breeding with the intention of improving the breed whilst knowing they are for pet homes if you don't show...seems to fit in with point 11
  5. Breeding healthy dogs for pet homes is of value isn't it?? I don't think everything should hang on the show ring...
  6. OMG, I can't remember if I paid for one. Have I paid, I think I haven't...could you let me know as I was offline for a while I still want it if it is not too late.
  7. I walk my Pap up to 4km a day... Just watch him but I suspect do your usual walk as normal. You can always carry the little one if he were to conk out anyway.
  8. One would assume BullTerriers dig up bulls ;)
  9. Awww. I'm in Sydney It is a great idea. The dacchy owners seem to be very organised here too, because they have a breed meet in Centennial Park every now and again and it is great with 60 dacshunds!! If we come for a trip to Melbourne will hopefully drop in :D
  10. Wow, good on you. I can only say that I know how you feel/felt in those first days...and I got a 3 year old dog, not a puppy. I live in an apartment and I was a nervous wreck for the first few weeks...about leaving him, him protest barking when I did so etc and I had two weeks break when I first got him. It was a steep learning curve and I have found that regular structure is really good: a walk first thing in the morning and a play/ or training. The walking really made a big difference in terms of bonding and for him then being quite satisfied to be at home inside; obviously a puppy may not be up for those big walks but little ones may tire Harper. It took time too for him to settle but now we live in great harmony
  11. Found this on Facebook. Poor dog being teased
  12. Well, it may be a legitimate concern, as it is a possibility that the old fella might go in your absence...but then he may not...especially if left in a loving caring environment with friends or family he knows. My Mum left her old dog in a kennel and came back to him gone, which was very sad...and shocking for her as the stress may have tipped him. I guess the bottom line is that it could happen but if you weigh things up and do your best to leave him in a loving environment, and weigh things up with needing a holiday for you and OH, hopefully you can arrive at a decision that you feel okay with.
  13. That's a great idea!! I hope a sewer comes along for you!! maybe whoever was in the forum marketplace sewing the different breeds of dog... Will go have a look for name... ETA Couldn't find doggy sewer but Itsmeg, Reverend Jo and Amstaffs4me are all doing sewing things in there!!
  14. I will have one please. I thought I had added into this thread recently but can't see me anywhere so...just one please
  15. I was looking for a Papillon and was expecting to pay around $800=$1000. I saw some Pap pups in PP for $1250...so imagine when I got Tonka whose sister and mother are grand champions for $300!! I could not believe it. He was three and I had to desex him...he was a rehoming price that i do see happens with some registered breeders with adult dogs, but I felt really lucky
  16. Paps do shed and they certainly tend to be very active and animated dogs. Paps are quite animated which took me by surprise but at the same time they will settle and sleep at your feet or on your lap... With mine, he often suffices with one walk around the block each day and lives in an apartment! So I don't think that that is extreme by any measure and they are a breed recommended for elderly people. They love a cuddle and mine curls up on my bed to sleep at night (especially in winter!) Here is my cutie (they are a very unique gorgeous little breed) ETA regarding shedding, they lose some hair but quite minimal I find and tends to be seasonal. I do not have issues with dog hair on my clothes or up my nose, so they are easy in comparison to many smooth haired coats. Also they don't take much grooming and do not require any clipping of coat at all.
  17. And to add in, on the Pap side, I chose to get an adult Papillon because they seemed a breed very suitable to apartment living. He has worked out beautifully and sometimes I think that it is me that thinks he should have a yard...he seems fine. This was confirmed to me after I had settled him in (during holidays), and then left him home alone for the first full day away... I rushed home all anxious and took him out for a pee/poo break after over six hours...he went and then scrambled to get back in the flat, scratching at the door Needless to say I relaxed. He seems to love his indoor life, but I walk him and take him to the off leas parks, and on my days off he comes with me a lot in the car etc. I must say it does take dedication, and at night when I want to drop in bed I have to take him out for the last toileting. Also, I have to get home to let him out so can't just go out open-endedly like I sometimes might.
  18. :p I reckon if you were a stage parent you could make some money with that pup
  19. Ha ha And who does the famous Ralph belong to, among us DOLERs?? They are a right funny pair...their faces have so much character
  20. Lovely!! And OT but I see the photographer of the park shots is Katie Takes a Picture...I voted for that name and what great photos
  21. How about a rough collie...Lassie come home. Or I was thinking a Golden retriever, pity about your hubby! Aussies are great, or a cav as already suggested.
  22. I'm glad your girl is getting some benefits from her uniqueness at the vets and good luck with the op and sorting out her urinary system. I'm sure others who know where you check for a breeder's registration will come along, but for sure this site is one way to source pups or adult dogs.
  23. Yes, life is life, but I could be being too Buddhist for this forum
