Like the others said... plus, I have yet to see any of the larger breeds do "well" on Science Diet, unless they are mature and a "good doer" or low metabolism. I would definitely try swapping over your brand of dry. I am not going to necessarily suggest my favourite brand because that is what I believe my dogs do well on, but there are several of brands around that I have seen the larger breeds do much better on and they would include Nutrience, Artemis, Eagle pack and Royale Canin.

Hi Fiona. The velcro will naturally usually slip to the back because of the lack of weight in that section. And that is the best way for it to be worn. The veins that are closest to the skin are under the neck mostly, similarly to ours. The Collar will cool the blood in the veins as it flows near the surface of the skin.

Hi shmoo, just check that there is no hair or dirt caught up in the velcro of Dexter's Collar, and that is also plenty of overlap with the hook and loop. I have never seen or heard of one one come undone from a head shake. If all seems clear, just press the velcro together a little firmer with your fingers. If not enough overlap of the velcro, slide up the neck first and reattach. Should be fine.

Thanks 4 Kelpies, sorry for the delay getting back to you. Have been out at our specialty all morning. Will get on to it now for you.

roses, I would not worry about measuring your lad for a Polar Collar. he will need the size 3 (Large). His neck will grow a bit in the next few months, and there's all that coat, so the large will be fine for him. Of course, if you do decided to go ahead and purchase, please feel free to forward both the measurements mentioned in the listing, and I will double check, just to be sure.

Good question KM. I have not actually weighed them. it also deopends on which size Pad and how recently it has been soaked. but let's say the size 5 (largest) and straight out of a soaking, it is quick heavy. Definitely atleast a few kgs. As soon as it is activated the evaporative process begins, and the weight starts to lessen. But this process takes a long time, as it is still cool usually for a few days.

Thanks Karly. I have sent you an ebay message this morning. Have a great weekend. Watch your ferret doesn't decide to chew it up. Yes, the polymers (crystal contents) are non-toxic. However a belly full of them would not be ideal.

I soaked mine then towel dried the surface and hung it on the clothesline for a bit. It still took a long time for the surface material to dry completely (maybe a day?) but I just put a towel underneath it and was fine. I soaked mine on wednesday and 2 days later it's still cold -and it was 36 degrees today so that's saying something The material is quite thick and strong so I doubt a dog would destroy it in a hurry, but I guess it's possible. The stuff inside is supposed to be non toxic though... The collars are a different material, the outside is much lighter and dries within a few minutes. Hope that helps Thanks Secret Kei. It really depends on what the application is at the time as to whether it requires the fabric being dry for you or not. I never dry mine off, but I use them either on the tiles in the house or outside or in the car or in the crate. I am not worried about any of these surfaces getting a bit damp, nor do I mind the dog getting damp. the dogs don't mind either. Obviously if your application required the fabric to be dry, then yes, popping it out on the line for a while would assist with it drying off. I never dry my Collars. If I have just re soaked then, I run my hand along it to squeeze off some of the excess water and use it straight away.

Hi princesszelda. On ebay, I sell under the User ID of Aussiepetstuff or you can do an ebay search on Polar Collar or Polar Pad, and this will also bring up the Polar Product listings Hi Dyzney,i just had a look at your Polar Collars on your Ebay site,i was wondering, would these be too heavy or bulky for a Pug,he is 16 weeks old,but i do want to get one for him,as it is really starting to get hot here ? Thanks Hi smitty, thanks for your question. At this age I would think he may struggly a bit with the weight and bulk of the collar. For the size of a Pug, they are very strong and tough (when a bit older of course), so there is no reason he would not be able to wear one comfortably soon. You can see how he goes in one over the coming warmer months, as he will be growing quickly at this age. It will certainly not hurt him to try it on for short periods and let him get used to the bulk and weight, and then as he grows a bit stronger, he will manage very well. Even I notice the weight in mine if I am wearing it working and bending forward over my packing station for long periods. So dogs, as they are constantly leaning that way will notice the weight if they are small, weak and young. The thing with these Collars, as you have already realised, they will be a bulky and heavy type of product once soaked and activated. Therefore even our smallest size is not made to suit the small breeds with fine necks. We just cannot cater for these little necks and dogs as the swelled collar will just not corner properly around their tiny necks. Pugs of course are a bit different as they have a very thick neck for their body size. And as you know the brache breeds do really feel the heat. I hope this helps smitty. Hugs to your gorgeous baby. Thanks for the advise and ideas Dyzney,i think i will look at getting one from you fairly soon,as you said,i can put it on him for a little bit at a time, and as he gets older and stronger he will be used to it.They are a great idea, and being a Pug,the heat is an everyday problem. Thanks so much Dyzney. Your are very welcome smitty

I Expressed Kei's Polar Pad SK, as I did not want you to have to tolerate Aust Post's tardiness again. Surprising though, normally I find them to be spot on. sorry they were slow with your Collar. Aww, thanks Dyzney Not your fault they were slow! Should be here very soon then :D Australia post have been shocking lately (well here anyway) Last week they took 4 days to get an express envelope to me from NSW (Yes, we are out of the 1 day zone but come on? 4??!!) And then they took 3 weeks to deliver my last order from the US because customs were 'behind' (even though I had paid a stupid amount for the 6-10 day USPS express option). Bloody postal service Ah well... at least they didn't lose it. Not quite. I had plans to wait for the collar to arrive and see what I thought before ordering a mat ...but I have no patience so I ordered it on Sunday Glad I did though :D eta, Kei's mat is HERE!! :D :D Wow SK that was quick. Great.

BCPuppy, no need for an apology. You were not aware I hold exclusive distributorship. It was Polar's error, and it is all sorted now. Please don't worry about it. all good. I am happy you still managed to get hold of the great products, and you know where to go next time.

I feed a kind of prey model diet. When it says 10% bone, it means 10% plain bone, as the average small prey animal is about 10% bones by weight. The bones you feed (chicken backs, lamb ribs, chicken wings) are not just bone, they're RMB, so they're already at least 1/2 to 2/3 meat. That means you need to feed at least 25 - 30% of the diet as RMB in order to get 10% actual bone in the diet. Make sense? Of the organs, half (5%) should be liver. And IMO, most of the rest should be kidney. I feed green tripe too, it's great for dogs, and that's in addition to the 10% organs. Make sure you freeze and defrost raw lamb or beef meat or organs before feeding it to your dog, kills most of the parasitic nasties that could be there. Great advice staranais. May I add to that, regarding the freezing of any meat products, to kill the parasites, freezing must be for a minimum of 21 days.

Hi BCPuppy. I feel very confident that you will be thrilled with your Polar Products order. As K9+ has Sole Distributorship for all Australian public sales on Polar Pads and Polar Collars, your order must have been filled in error. All these sales inquiries are normally forwarded directly to me.

Fluffypaws, yes I can also vouch for the Polar Collars working well on coated breeds. It does seems amazing even to me, I am constantly amazed by these products though I have been selling them for a few years now. Even though they work well on dogs with long coats, another option for an even more optimal affect is this... if your dog is not a show dog, and really feels the heat extremely, you can clip off a section of coat around the dog's neck, in a collar shape. We did this for our 14 yo GSD bitch whom felt the heat worse than any dog I have ever owned. We clipped it aporox 2-3" wide all the way around, just to give her an even better affect. Her coat was so dense and thick, much more so than a Collie rough. Unfortunately Jess has gone to heaven now, but her hair grew back very well in the cooler months. In fact it grew back so well that we clipped it several times during the Summer. Jess would wear her Polar Collar on every day over 28 degrees. I would turn it once or twice during the day, not essential, but can help. I would take it off her around 6-7pm, let it rest over night, and retop it up with a quick soak the next morning if warm again. SecretKei, hopefully your parcel will arrive today, maybe Monday at the latest. Waiting is always hard. Oonga, you are most welcome. If you let your partner try Maia's collar, she won't get it back I wear one when working in summer. It really saves me. I get very hot and it makes a huge difference. these collars are designed for people to wear also... in fact I am sure the origianl idea was for people, and pets was an after thought. My girlfriend in QLD has one for each dog when she is showing, and her and her hubby have one each also. Wolfgirl, that is an excellent report. thank you for letting me know.

Like I said, pretty sure Mort will be medium, but with his measurements, I will feel more confident at accurately sizing him.

With the products that contain the non-toxic polymers (crystals) they work by an evaporative affect being created once the polymers are activated by soaking them. the slow evaporation is what gives off the cooling and as it occurs gradually, this is what makes them last so long. duration of cooling provided depends on several factors.. ambient temperature, humidity, conditions, quality of water used etc. Also rolling the collar over every couple of hrs can help also, but is not necessary. And yes, cooling can last for several days. However, I find a quick and simple top up soak each morning works best. I am not a big fan of the ice type products as these can and have been known to create chills. Perhaps different with using mats, as the dog can get up and move away, but with a collar, the dog is forced to keep it on until you can attend it. I leave my Polar collars on the dogs when I go out and I feel confident that they will be kept cool without being over cooled and having a velcro fitting, mean that if they get snagged (never happened with me) then the colar can "break away" easily enough before the dog would be in any danger. Hope this helps. ;)

I have a cool mat SK and I immerse it in water for about 5 minutes and it has small hard gel crystals inside it, when soaked they expand, soften and do their thing. The mat stays cool for 3 to 5 days, depending on how hot it is. The crystals just start losing their moisture or however the hell it works and then after 4-5 days it is back to flat and hard gel crystals. I didnt believe it, but it works. Now to get my dog to lay on it ..... thats a whole other story!! Im not sure who I got it from but I'm sure I could back track and find out if you want their info. Its an Aussie company. Not sure if they did the neck thingies though. Hi HH, I am pretty sure you purchased your mat from my ebay store, and it is a Polar Pad. Yes I have the Polar Collars also.

Bestcare "holistic" Food
Starkehre replied to all that glitters's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have had a reasonable amount of experience in amongst the Greyhound racing fraternity. It is the common and popular belief that foods that are produced with feeding Greyhounds in mind is made to a budget as most GH trainers/owners do not wish to spend much money when feeding their hounds. Also, as it is common practice to feed GHs some sort of kibble and add raw meat to it as their most popular form of diet (as far as my experience tells me) the dry food is usually mainly if not completely cereal as they are adding it mean anyway. So, I think that is probably why the guys said it is bad because it is designed for GHs. I thought Pookinuk still had a good range of EP available, delivered anywhere in Melb for $5.00, any amount of bags, same delivery price... along with Artemis, Royale Canin and Nutrience and heaps of other brands. -
Algae Warning To All Dog Owners
Starkehre replied to kitty2512's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've not heard of or experienced algae causing toxicity, unless it is blue/green algae. But I have heard of and know owners with dogs that have had dogs with immune mediated disorders brought on by swimming in dams. Totally different illness and treatment.
