No collars at home here. There is no safe tightness or looseness. Too loose they can get their foot, mouth or other objects stuck in a collar. Too tight, they can't slip it if it gets stuck. Not a risk I am prepared to take and I am at home mostly. Apart from the serious risk factor, I do not like the marks they leave in the coats or how the young ones form habits of chewing them. I have seen one dog get caught in another dog's collar, and then they were stuck together, not good.

Blood On The Floor But None Of The Dogs Are Injured?
Starkehre replied to indigirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
Good thought, except that when ears bleed, this is usually accompanied with a lot of head shaking, hence the blood would not be in a "huge blob". it would be all over the walls in droplets. -
Blood On The Floor But None Of The Dogs Are Injured?
Starkehre replied to indigirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
indigirl, the absolute last thing I wish to do is panic you, cause there may be a miriad of sources and reasons for this blood that could be nothing major... but I will say this. I have had 2 dogs with IMT (Immune mediated thrombocytopaenia) and the first one's visual symptoms started this way. There was one vomit of blood, and I had no idea where it came from. I checked all the dogs' mouths, and there were no signs of anything sinister. The 2nd vomit occurred later that day, and I still missed it, but this time I noticed Ruby was the one with a tiny bit of blood still in her mouth left over from the vomit. Rushed her off to the vet, and after blood tests her disease was diagnosed. So, just to rule anything similar to this out, may I suggest that you go back to the dogs' mouths and have a closer look. What you are looking for is this... any signs of anemia, as in pale gums or gums lacking most or all note of pink. Having said this some dogs to transiently get pale gums for no reason, so just have a look anyway. Then, whilst in the mouth look along the gum line for any tiny dots that look like pin pricks of blood. Also if the gums look strange, like perhaps swollen. If you have a thermometer, check the dog's temperature also. If it is low, that is cause for concern. Then, if all that looks fine, there is a reasonable chance there is no internal bleeding or lack of clotting. If any of these little checks show up something is not right, do not muck around, straight to the vet. If you are by chance really worried, the next step would be blood tests to check for platelets. Both my girls presented with different symptoms and both had the same disease. It is not a common thing, so you would be extremely unlucky for it to be this, but I thought no hurt in sharing my info just to be on the safe side. I hope it is nothing, and wish you the best. -
Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)

Hi Jed. Just popped in to let you know I am thinking about you and hoping your healing journey is still going well. All the best. -
Neither the harle or the black/ blue are great examples of the breed IMO The ones in the back are very fine and too greyhoundish especially with the gay tail. I have not see any danes like that in Australia (its obviously an overseas pic because of the cropped ears). The harle - appears to be overweight to start with - there is no spring of the ribs I can see. Water could be deceiving but also seems short in the leg and does not seem to have a lot of bone in the front legs. Would love to see a standing pic as it may just be bad angles etc. Wasn't going to say, but now that you have Danois ... I agree, this dog looks overweight, quite considerably to me, but it could just be the photo,

"Type" is defined by breed and/or Breed Standard "Style" is the word that describe a taste or variation within the breed or Breed Standard. Hence, within a breed all conforming to Breed Standard there can be differing styles, not types. Or at least that is how understand it

That's Awsome! What are the dimensions? Hi Seita. These are the ordered dimensions, so will be close to this, but as previously mentioned, I will be checking all these details when they arrive... Length: 1500mm x Width: 500mm x Depth: 180mm Ok guys, these umbrella/utility/equipment bags have just arrived. As such a big and pliable item it is difficult to get an exact measurement on them, but from the best of my ability I have measured these to be 1490mm L x 390mm W x 190mm Depth. The great advantage of making a bag with a depth is if that anything needs to be put into the bag that is slightly over 1500mm, it will still fit, as the fabric is soft and will easily accommodate without making it tight. The ebay listing will commence tonight if anyone is interested. If you make a purchase, ebay message me letting me know you are a DOLer and I will provide a discount. Thanks for all your assistance with the design of these.

I cannot better this... well said grumpette. You are absolutely so very welcome. Love to you and your beautiful surviving fur kiddies Jed

From day 1, on the very top of my list is teaching puppy to be respectful of all other ranking leaders, which is everyone else in the household. Then following closely behind that is teaching puppy to be confident and comfortable in it's own company. I work very hard to have these 2 priorities reasonably solid within week 1 of puppy arriving. of course there will be step backs and challenges further along, but as long as the foundation is there, I am happy. Socialization, and obedience training are hugely high on my agenda, and are a no brainer for me, but I am not overly stressed about getting these sorted in the first week, especially not the recall. Getting puppy out does normally start for me until I know pup is settled at home, so probably day 3-5.

They Say If You Breed Long Enough You'll See Everything
Starkehre replied to winpara's topic in Breeders Community
I have also had this happen with cats. I used to breed Cornish Rexs and had a queen give birth to a small baby about a week early, the the remainder of the litter later. All survived. On a separate occasion I had a queen give birth to 3 partitally developed premature kittens mid term, and manage to stop labour and maintain the pregnancy with the others. They were born several weeks later all fine. Rats, different again. They can carry multi pregnancies at the same time, from different matings, really bizzare And successfully give birth to them all, and feed them, no problems. Makes us humans look pretty basic in comparison -

I feel continually humbled and privileged that you are willing to share your innermost thoughts and feelings with us Jed, Thank you. Sending positive affirmations and healing thoughts for your heart and your eyes. My own personal beliefs on why sometimes the most seemingly horrific things occur in our lives when we cannot explain them is this... our life journey is about how we deal with these things, not the things themselves. Dealing with huge tragedy teaches us about ourselves and life and how to learn to see the positives and finding our inner strengths when everything looks so grim. Not easy. And if by chance my beliefs are correct, then you are doing a wonderful job. Coping with adversity is so hard. :D -
Regarding allergies to one dog and not another... I am allergic to dog saliva. However, it can differ from one dog to another, and what I believe to be the reason for this is different acid levels in their saliva. I think it is the acid content that sets off my eczema. I am definitely more allergic to my bitch's saliva than my dog's.

Well, OH and I had previously already both clicked with our breed Rottis a long time ago... this was prior to us meeting each other 6 years ago. Then low and behold, when we met and found out that each other already had Rottis, we then clicked with each other, so a sort of different twist to clicking with the partner to suit the already clicked breed.

Excellent result Piper and Jazz. You must be very proud. Well done.

Just advising that yes, I did go ahead and have these made. Umbrella/Utility Carry Bags will be in stock approx Friday of next week, 9th July. Until I unpack them and do a final check to ensure they are exactly how I wanted, I will not be advertising them. But shortly after that, they will be listed on my ebay store if anyone is interested. http://stores.ebay.com.au/K9-SoftDogCrates Have a great weekend all

We Did A Really Nice Kind Thing Today
Starkehre replied to Loraine's topic in General Dog Discussion
That's just lovely Loraine, good work. A bit OT, but along similar lines... several years ago my (now passed) grandmother was staying in an aged care facility. When I went in to visit her this particular day, she told me that she saw a pony the previous day, and that she patted it and was about "so" high and was really friendly and beautiful. Well, I just smiled and said that it was lovely, but seriously thought she was losing her marbles. I sort of forgot about it and didn't think of it again, until her funeral, when they had displayed lots of photos of nana. And guess what... one of these was taken not long before she passed away, where she was staying, and it was of her patting a cute pony from in her bed in her room at the facility. The carers had allowed the pony inside for the day so all the residents could spend some time with it. I thought that was gorgeous. Boy was I wrong about nana and her mind going??!! -

Nice to see the puppy farmer is still churning 'em out. Keep up the good work Jed. -
Sorry, should have explained better... I rarely use the dryer, unless I need to. I just use clothes horses. But we do have ducted heating that is on enough in the Winter to assist with the drying of clothes, and the house in warm enough in the other months to dry itself. Yeh, I just figure the dogs can have the yard to themselves to save us all the headaches. I am sure my young lad would love to drag it off the line if I put it up there. Just teaches bad habits, but that is just my opinion. Set yourself up for a win I say. Rather than having to put in more work to solve the issues when they happen.
-
I do all my clothes drying in the house all year round. Kinder on the clothes and the dogs.

For approx the last 20 years I have always owned and run 2 or more bitches together... entire and desexed. I have never had any issues. These included Rottweilers, Dobermanns, GSD, Greyhounds, Standard Poodle and the odd rescue, boarder and foster bitch. I know problems can occur, just can't say that I have experienced this.
-
I have a question that I think might be a no brainer, but I just was not sure and couldn't find it anywhere in the rules... before commencing exhibiting a neuter in a neuter class, does that dog's registeration already have to be transfered over to being a Neutrer Registered dog? Nevermind, I found it. I really must learn to read things more thoroughly.

Morning Jed. These times ahead are certainly going to be tough. But I am glad you have a plan, be in semi permanent for now. It is amazing how things do have a way of working out, though I realise that may not be much consolation right now. An extra pair or runners is awesome What a find. Nice to see you still looking for the silver lining where ever you can see it. It must have been hard seeing your house like that Yes, it definitely makes sense to try to hang on to the property if you possibly can. I really hope so. Do you have a plan to rebuild? Is there much/any of the house that is salvagable? Oh how exciting, doggies coming for a visit tomorrow. Wow, that will be a very special moment. I hope someone has a camera on hand. The dogs will be so excited to see you Jed. I look forward to hearing how that visit goes, if you feel like sharing with us. And you are very welcome regarding assistance. Us DOLers love to help you. :D Have a good day Jed. You are never far away from my thoughts. -
Well, I work from home, but I quite often take my dogs down to the post office as I do posting every week day. I have a great relationship with the staff at my local, let in the back door, and do my own forms etc. They all love to see Dyzney and Jag and Jag loves burying his head in all the upright postal sacks waiting to be filled. Julia usually takes them around to behind the front counter so they can say to all the other staff and Jag pops his paws up on the counter for pats by the customers... well the ones that are game to pat a big Rotti Treats, wrestles and hugs, then we head back to the office again. So, today, I will take them down there, as the post office is almost like another work place for me, I spend so much time there.
