Endurance Test 2011 Thread
Starkehre replied to TerraNik's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I was balloted out once. it is just the luck of the draw. i actually contacted the trial secretary and asked her to Keep me in mind if anyone else cancelled. As luck would have it, someone did and I got in. As foe entering two, it may not work the way you want. Both may get in and then you either have to scratch one (and then someone else will be dark on you because they missed out), or you have to have a second handler lined up. M Thanks AS. That was great you got in, in the end. As they are 2 weeks apart, I may enter both. If I get into the first one and scratch the 2nd as soon as I know, they will have 3+ weeks to allow someone else in that may have got balloted out, ... or maybe I will just enter one. Not sure yet, will decide when the time gets closer. I certainly would not do anything to ruin it for someone else, but I can't see how it would when the trials are 2 weeks apart? If I notified the trial secretary as soon as I knew I got into the first one, surely no one would miss out? How far out from the trial are you notifed you are definitely in.. sorry, I do not remember. -

I have finally narrowed my ET down to either HV in May or Dally in June. It will depend on obedience trials and shows on around that time. I actually would have liked to do the GSD at Altona again as I enjoyed that ground last time (except for the bottle necking labyrinth on the bridge but that one is a bit close to our SA Specialty. I am curious, has anyone ever been balloted out of an ET. I know it is always a possibility, but I have never heard of it happening. There is so much training and getting vetting organised, it would be so disappointing if this happened. ...and if there is a fair possibility of being balloted out, can you enter 2, get your vetting done for both at the right time frames, then scratch the 2nd one if you get into the first one? The 2 ETs that I am looking at entering are only 2 weeks apart, so if I missed out on the first one, maintaining that level of fitness in my dog would not be unfeasible for an extra 2 weeks, as opposed to say 4 or 6 weeks later. -
:D Later in the evening watching TV when one of the dogs starts whining to go out OH or I will turn to each other and say, "YOUR dog needs to go to the toilet, you better let him out" :D Absolutely corrie. Or when one dog "drops a mintie" it must be OH's dog that did it

.....but on a more serious note, our 3 dogs (2 of which we obtained since we were together) are both of ours. Although I am typically the boss of the dog stuff, OH is very involved with them and loves them dearly. Outside our business lives, our dogs are our only hobby and passion. All we do when not working is pretty much stuff with our dogs, whether it be fun stuff, training or competing. Our lives are for the most part evolved around our dogs, and we both love it this way OH enjoys coming to all our dog events etc. Our other ownership joke is that he owns the boy and I own the girls, so it is sort of a battle of the sexes thing, chicks against the blokes All tongue in cheek of course. I am very lucky, we have a great life with our dogs and I am very appreciative that OH is "into" the dogs so much :D
-
When the dogs are well behaved, they are my dogs. :D ....When they are naughty, they belong to OH. " Your naughty dog has done so & so" Sorry, couldn't help it

I think they are asking about 2 different dogs - from what I gather, Sidro is the girlfriend with the Pitty and Duman is the boyfriend with the Amstaff type. In the other thread Duman is asking about his Amstaff, and then the thread sort of started heading down the path of his girlfriend's Pitty, which is also the one that this thread is about. Welcome to you both. Your dogs look lovely and well behaved. You obviously put a lot of time into them.

x2 Added, not only will you need to ensure these pups become less reliant upon one another for stimulation, games, company, security etc, but also do not replace that with yourselves. By this I mean that Yes, it is super important that these pups become strongly bonded with their human pack members, more so than each other when and where possible, but IMHO it is even more important that each pup learns to be comfortable and confident in it's own company. This calm self assured, confident behavior is the very first thing I teach all puppies I bring into my home. It is difficult enough to teach this to one puppy without having 2 litter siblings in the one home, especially as adolescents. It does sound like you are really switched on and putting in lots of research and making all efforts to plan well, and I do commend you for this, however, I would still be looking into setting up your crates and beds in separate areas or rooms even. If there is one thing that is likely to drive me nuts with any dogs is not being able to separate them from each other at any time I wish to. So, I go all out every day to do as much as I can with my dogs "separately". If you go ahead with this adoption, please do so because you are really keen to take on this massive work load and challenge and not because you can't bear to not save the dogs. You need to be happy also.

Hi Wendy, I believe Tony is currently away and I am not sure when he is expected back.

Morning guys. I am planning to do ET this year with Jag. Fame will do ET next year, 2012 I have not decided which one as yet, but was leaning towards the Dally one. Perhaps I will look at the Sale one, is it held in the velodrome? I have only done one before, but enjoyed it along with the training. -

Most totally does. Tend to just laugh now. The two older pups were wrestling and making noise so were obviously vicious too. THe 80kilo rotti comment gets a roll of the eyes from me to who does have an oversized rather poorly bred rotti but he is no where near 80kg and the it has a head this big where the arms are stretched further than the body comments rofl. Always good for a giggle :D yeh totally emery, yes the arms stretched like the fish that got away They think that bigger is always better. :D -

But dyzney we had people tell us this at last years royal show so it must be true. a group of us exhibiotrs all set up with our females 3yrs, 6 months, 10 months and 7.5 months in one spot and further down were some adult males. People walking past and going these are smaller rottis or why are they so much smaller than those over there pointing at males. us rolling eyes they well three of them anyway are puppies and those over there are adult males lol Yeh, I know Emery, it drives you crazy doesn't it. Dyzney is a large bitch, but when she stands next to Jag they say she must be the "miniature" version :D When you get the smart a--e folk that brag about their friend having a 80kg male that is "this" much bigger than mine (as they use their hands to make the size of about one foot", I cannot help but delight in telling them that it is way over correct size for Breed Standard and is drastically over weight and likely to be poorly bred. Or maybe a male that was way too young to be desexed. -

That leaves my Polarbear guy in the dust! Good god! Who would do that Sorry guys... no, no, not on purpose, according to the owner the puppy followed her car down the drive way because it wanted to be with owner so much, and that is how it got run over. Just carelessness. Of course the puppy should have been confined and in fact it was the owner's fault for not securing the puppy that it got run over, not because it loved her so much... bloody idiot, the owner I mean. But how I wrote it previously was how she explained it to me... bit of a nutter I am sure. -
Ironic, I was only having this conversation with a good friend of mine about carting Rottis a few days ago. Carting is something I have wanted to do with my Rottis for ages and am currently looking into different styles and types of carts, so I can consider purchasing one or having one built for my dogs. My big boy Jag would LOVE to pull a cart. He is very dexterous (not that a dog requires dexterity to pull a cart, but he just thrives on challenging games and puzzled) and enjoys "doing" anything that requires a bit of thought and strength and allows him to be the centre of attention I really hope carting does become an ANKC recognised sport one day soon. Does anyone have any info on where this stands currently. Lo Pan, good explanation for those not understanding how carting affects the dog In sporting carting, in the third level the dog pulls adults (adult drives) in the cart around an obstacle course. These adults are normal varying adult weights and the dog copes very well.

This thread makes for fun reading... and frustrating. I always promise myself I will shut my mouth and not talk dog... then I always do and end up regretting it :D Apparently there are 2 breeds of Rottis - the small ones and the large ones And this one just a couple of days ago "I ran over my new puppy and broke it's legs cause it loves me too much" This was a business related inquiry, so I had to summon all my strength not to go to town on this prospective customer. -
2 dogs, 2 consultation fees. When you book, what you will find is that they will most likely be quite specific about it on the phone, particularly if you are bringing in a new dog and if you are not a real regular clinent. The reception or vet nurse may say something to you like, "well, we will put Spot in for the 12pm appointment and Rex in for the 12.10 appointment", so this way it will be clear to you that you have 2 actual consultants, even if you go in the room once with both dogs at the same time. It is only fair.

As we know hot spots can be cause by a few things. In my experience the ones I have always dealt with have been created by the dog scratching an itch and then the broken surface becoming infected with some type of organism in the soil or in dirt already in the coat or under the nails. So, there is a good chance that if you prevent the dog from scratching itself from it's allergies (I know this might be very difficult) you might be in with a chance of preventing the hot spots. I do find that the anti-histamines help in this regard and also keeping the itchy dog cool and clean and it's nails short and clean. I wish you the best of luck with it

I feel your pain c.b. One of my bitches is a compulsive licker. I believe it to be affection based. Now, I would not mind if I did not break out in a somewhat severe attack of eczema each time. And it seems to be the 2 places that dogs get your first with a loving lick is either the inner arm or the neck... my 2 most sensitive parts. Anyway, it has taken me 6 years to teach Dyzney not to lick me when I pat her, and this is a multi titled dog that is very smart and a quick learner I see her struggle with it, and if I am not looking or concentrating elsewhere, she will still get a "quickie" in if she can, as she walks by or whatever. She knows she is not supposed to do it but seems she really can hardly help herself and prefers to cop the consequence than missing out on that quick lick. Drives me nuts. The command she understands is "no lick". And the really cool thing about it is that I have also then taught her the command to "lick", so she really does understand the word lick and what it means. The "lick" command comes into play when I want her to lick something rather than grab it, and she gets it. Very cool to see. I digress sorry, anyway, my point is that you can teach them not to lick, but it is really hard particularly when they are so compelled to do it. Good luck

Merry Christmas to you and yours Troy. May you have happiness and good health.

Personally, I would drive to pick the pup up. You can do this in one day. My way of thinking is that it may be a 1 hr flight, but with the breeder driving the pup to the airport (or being picked up by agent) and then waiting for flight, waiting after flight and what happens in between, is going to end up being way more than 1 hr for the pup and probably a lot more stressful than being in a car and being rocked to sleep whilst hearing quiet music and humans talking amongst themselves. I have heard a lot of horror stories about dogs over heating in flights and whilst waiting for flights. What if the flight gets cancelled etc? What if the pup is being boarded on a 35 degree day and during the middle of the day? Just too many outside influences for my liking. Of course many a pup travels this way absolutely fine also. Different if the trip was from the otherside of the country, but as close as an 8 hr drive, I would definitely be hopping in the car. But then, that is just me. I enjoy driving and 8 hrs is not far IMO. Roads will not be overly busy as many are still on holidays in late Jan. All the best whichever way you decide to go.

My Dog Is Not Agressive Some Advice Please
Starkehre replied to A and G's topic in General Dog Discussion
It makes me mad that some people think they can blame anything on the Rottis and excuse their own poor dogmanship. Sending big Christmas hugs to all the gorgeous Rottis out there! Souff Thanks Souff. I will pass on your wishes to our kiddies. Yes, we wear that sort of thing all the time. That is why when you own the types of breeds that tend to get blamed before they have done anything, you often end up deciding not to attend places like leash free parks, even if they are bomb proof, don't rush and have excellent recalls. Just not worth the grief. My breed means too much to me to risk it receiving further negative publicity than is necessary. -
Kashing, all good advice you have been given. It is difficult when you are first starting out, and kudos to you for asking a lot of questions. Please stop pushing your puppy over to test his strength. Your pushing will be enough to damage his joints. GSD and other large breed puppies are very weak at this age and need a lot of protection and supervision regarding movement. Take it very easy with him. When putting him down from being picked up, ensure all 4 feet are on the ground and balanced before letting him go, and do this on a rough surface, not tiles or polished timber floors. Enjoy your baby. Time flies.
