Yes. Don't. It's a F1 cross of two breeds with widely unpredictable results and the cross is largely produced by puppy farmers. If you want poodle attributes in a large dog then get a Standard Poodle. LIKE + 1

If your wife's biggest issue with Rottweilers is owing to temperament, then purchasing a cross breed dog with the parents likely being incorrect examples of the breed both in type and temperament does not guarantee a better temperament. In fact it does not guarantee anything except that you will have absolutely no idea what to expect from this off spring. My guess would be that perhaps your wife has not had the privilege of meeting a Rottweiler with correct temperament. Rottweilers and SPs are two totally different breeds, bred to do totally different jobs. Both great dogs, I own one breed and have owned the other breed. I have never found the Standard Poodle temperament to be as confident as I would like (not meaning this in an offensive way to Poodle enthusiasts). There is no way I would ever mix the two, recipe for disaster IMO. Too many poorly bred Rottweilers already lack confidence. People should not be intentionally playing God with breeds that already suffer from poor publicity and bad breeders. Genetics will fall where they will and it is not likely that amateur breeders and puppy buyers have the knowledge to do temperament testing on baby puppies. There is no way of knowing or controlling that the pup will not inherit the entire temperament of the Rottweiler parental component. And how would you know if the temperament is a good one or even a correct Rottweiler temperament? Good breeders do everything they can to never sell their well bred puppies to the types of people that breed these puppies. The parents of the pups are likely to also be backyard bred or puppy farmed, as are the parents of those dogs also. No pedigree, no knowledge of previous temperaments in ancestors, no guarantees, no support. The only way of purchasing a well bred Rottweiler with a correct temperament is to purchase one from a reputable breeder that is aiming to do just that. Regarding the negative experience you wife had of a Rottweiler in the past, it is likely that the dog either had a poor temperament and/or poor owners, as a good Rottweiler is calm and has a stable demeanour, self assured, not timid and in normal day to day situations would not be exhibiting any behaviours that anyone would find disturbing. They most certainly should not be killing other dogs. I am very sad and disappointed that she had this experience. I would not recommend anyone purchase a breed that they have a predisposed dislike for or fear of, for whatever reason. I would not try to talk anyone into purchasing a Rottweiler. They are a dog for people that are passionate about the breed and have a good understanding for the breed. Purchasing a cross bred dog containing a Rottweiler is not a wise alternative. I wish you all the best in your search for most suitable breed that you can all agree upon.

Best Sports For A Rottie?
Starkehre replied to mixeduppup's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yeh, she is pretty funny Tollersowned. Agility and herding are her favs. She goes at both of them with the same enthusiasm and cheeky grin on her face :D -
Cures and preventions for travel sickness really depends upon whether the dog is sick owing to stress/anxiety or if it is purely motion sickness/nausea. These can become related if over time the dog associates one with the other, but in themselves are two totally different reasons for vomiting during travel.

Great idea about the fence MUP. Absolutely, feel most welcome to ask advice. I will only advise on what I feel confident in my knowledg and experience. I am far from what I would call a great agility handler as much has changed since I recently returned to the sport, so my knowledge as far as that goes is limited and I am still learning all the time. But I am quite savvy with my breed as I have been heavily involved in them for some time now. Males are wonderful, but I have a soft spot for my bitches. We do have a boy Jag also, but OH does stuff with him, herding and obedience mostly. Choice of pup is crucial. Conformation, health, athletic build, strength and fitness paramount. Try to look for a smaller line if you want to get a male. Not that larger males won't handle it, just less taxing on their body and faster. Above all don't do any jumping until your lad is at least 14-16 months old depending on his body type, and keep it minimum in height and quantity until 18 months. Stick to foundation until then. I have started foundation on my new pup Seven at 9 weeks of age. Truth be told when visiting the breeder every other day, I was doing shadowing with her from 5 weeks of age. She is awesome. -

Best Sports For A Rottie?

Hi MUP. Welcome to DOL I have also read your posts in the rotti thread and general, but decided to respond here as this question of yours is right up my alley. I have been competing in Agility with my Rotts for around 13 years. My first bitch Ruby was the first ADM. JDM Rottweiler in Australia (as far as I am aware) and was always very competitive. She also competed in Vic Top Jumping Dog of The year in 2002 and finished 7th. Sadly Ruby passed away at 7 years of age. My next girl Dyzney is now 9 and she just gained her JDX pass. We had 6 years out of Agility and just got back in about 6 months ago. I realised when I stopped Dyz had 4 JDX passes, so decided to attempt to gain that final pass for title. Even at her age in those few trial she did this year she placed a couple of 2nds I think. I will drag up some links shortly to videos. Keep in mind, prior to us having a break from Agility, the jumps were higher, there was weaving in Excellent Jumping and there were no rubber contacts and seasaw/tables were higher. Things are somewhat easier now, certainly safer. My current Agility girl is Fame. She has just started and gained her JD title a couple of weeks ago winning the ring. She also gained her first Novice Agility pass that day winning the ring. So, answer is yes Rottis make great Agility dogs. With the speed and accuracy of many of the BCs around now, Rottis are not as competitive in placing like they used to be, but they can still definitely achieve the titles and even place sometimes. Personally for me I am not fussed on winning/placing. I chase the titles as this is my buzz and knowing how much enjoyment both my dogs and I get out of this great sport. Agility aside, I also compete in Herding, ET, Obedience, Conformation, Tracking (not for ages and really must find time to get back into it). Rottweilers are so versatile. There is very little they cannot do. I am unsure of how many rotts there are in NSW competing Agility. I believe at least 1, but possibly more. At the moment I have the only Rotti competing in Vic (that I am aware of) since Dyzney retired. I do know of at least 4 others that have competed and titled to Masters in the last few years here in Vic. All that said, I would certainly be sorting out the issues with your neighbours prior to getting another dog, let alone a Rotti. Can you imagine what grief they will give you over that I wish you all the best with that. Regarding breeders, all I can say is do your homework. Be open and honest about what you want to do with your dog. You will not require a high drive dog to do Agility. All mine are born low/medium drive and I train in drive to develop the drive I want and need in different disciplines. Lower drive is easier to live with. That said it depends on how competitive you are on what your personal taste is. A really solid, confident temperament is paramount, particularly in males. You don't want anything that is likely to be reactive and lack confidence. Here are a few videos of Dyzney and Fame. -
What Would Your Friends And Family Do With Your Dogs?
Starkehre replied to Alyosha's topic in General Dog Discussion
Myself and my OH have printed laminated cards in our wallets. On thes we have included what dogs we have, where they are and what to do with them in emergency situations... whom to contact etc. Also is information regarding how to deal with the dogs in various scenarios of our illness/death etc. We have noted breeders' names and contact details and vet details. As soon as I thought to do this a few years ago, I felt so much better and so relieved. OH and I live a fairly secluded life, not many visitors and friends and pretty much no family that we have contact with or trust our dogs to. It was something we really had to do. From time to time I update our cards when new dogs are added or anything changes. Years ago we included instructions in our Will regarding the dogs, but these were very specific and nearly all our dogs are different now, so it is pretty much redundant. I plan to alter our Wills soon, but in the mean time our cards should cover it. Added, the majority of my instructions include euthanasia for the older adults and younger ones being returned to breeder in the case of our death and some types of injuries. Our families are not included in any of the dog's business in emergency so their feeling are irrelevant to us. -
Well, a good time to do a check on goals after the first 6 months has just about passed. Looking through my above list, I have ticked off several of the goals, which is awesome. I am really thrilled with how my girls are going. We got a new puppy in April, so this held some of the other goals back a tad, but all good. New puppy "Seven" is a ripper and has already been to two local all breeds shows and one interstate specialty. All in all I would say this year has been a great year so far. With the extra puppy I doubt we will even touch on our possible bonus list, but that's OK.

How To Keep Birds Away From His Food!
Starkehre replied to kitkatswing's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oops sorry, didn't read your whole listing. Did you make sure the owl moved around in the wind a bit? We have had ours up for a few years now and the birds in our area still have not figured it out. -

Purchase a bird scare owl. They are amazing. No birds that would normally feel threatened in nature by an owl will come within cooey of it. Suspend it from a verandah or a tree or clothesline. We have one up on our balcony to keep the maggies away and stop smaller birds nesting in our roof. Haven't had any around since. They are inexpensive and can be purchased from Bunnings either in the standard version or the solar eye version for around $10-$30 I think. They are also sold on ebay. -
Wish I could be there. Will be absolute blast. I have not been to an agility national since the first one held in Vic. I wish all competitors and their dogs much success, a fabulous time and remember you all bring home the best dog anyway :) Have fun Luke and Barkly :D ... and everyone else

I have a huge Weatherbeeta here that has never been used. Several years ago, my OH's auntie bought it for her Dobermann without doing any measurements... off season. When it came time to putting it on realised it was way too big. A few months ago she handed it over to me asking me to sell it for her and I have not got around to doing anything. I wish I had just told her "No" So, it is not recently manufactured, but it has never been worn. Too big for our dogs also. I think it is a 70cm, but might be bigger. I will dig it out... by memory it is a mauve color?? I will check the size and get back if you are interested. ------- OK, I just checked it, it is a WeatherBeeta Reflective Landa. It is 70cm, Mauve tearstop outer canvas with a navy blue cotton lining. It still is in it's original plastic zippered bag, but seems to have a small section (about an inch) on the chest velcro strap where the grey color has faded or discolored and gone a bit yellow. Seriously, if it was mine I would be happy to give it away if someone paid the postage, but as it is not mine to give, I am sorry, I can't. So I was thinking $15 sounds fair? Plus postage.

OMG Isiss, poor Spirit, poor you. This is such awful news Charles is brilliant. I doubt you could have her in better hands. I don't have any first hand experience with such a break, but wish Spirit the very best recovery. She is such a gorgeous sweet girl and I know how much you adore her.

My mum has her 2 older Siamese cats on BH Feline. By memory they are around 8 years old, both desexed, siblings. They have been on it now around 8 months and mum is really thrilled with the condition and look of her cats. She gets me post it to her each month.

Sorry Andisa, just spotted this... You are most welcome and we are thrilled Hamish is doing so well on the Black Hawk. It is always such a huge relief when you find a dog food that not only gives you the results you want, but also ticks the boxes for know health issues. Please keep us in the loop with how Hamish gets on. Our girls run on the smell of an oily rag also

Tried, but abandoned. Even though you enter quantity of dogs, survey is only set up for one dog... and even then cannot be aged under 1 year old. sorry

Facebook Page Neuter Class At Victorian Shows
Starkehre replied to Bilbo Baggins's topic in General Dog Discussion
I will like it when I can see it, did a search and I am unable to raise it yet, so will wait. :) I did Bermi earlier this year just for Neuter classes in 3 shows. I have done several shows just for Neuter classes, but Bermi was the furthest I have travelled for it and stayed 4 nights. I did Bairnsdale/Gippsland last year (3 shows) and a couple in Albury all just for Neuter classes, lots of travel and accommodation, lots of time and expense. And would I do it over again, absolutely, had a ball. More than happy to get on board with your FB page BB. Great job -
How do you scale them yourself Dyzney?? With brushing? The vet said to get a baby or kiddles tooth brush. No, I do not brush them. Brushing is more of a preventative and will remove plaque, not tartar. Tartar has to be scaled and I use a scaling tool and tweezers. Not that I am against brushing dogs' teeth or anything, but I just can't see myself committing to brushing 4 sets of teeth twice daily... as well as my own :D Our dogs have lovely clean teeth mostly. The eat a lot of bones and this does a terriic job mostly. I just give them a quick scale every now and then if I see it is required. The dogs just lay down for it, as when I dremel their nails.
-
Scale them yourself. I do my dog's teeth if there is ever any tartar appearing. My older bitch has had 3 upper molars removed from one side, so I need to do the lower opposing ones every now and then as she can't chew her bones on that side anymore.

You can enter a neuter into veterans classes if these are sweepstakes or property classes, not if they are champ point classes. If a specialty is offering Veterans 12 and 12a then neuters cannot enter these classes.

Whippet Won't Gain Weight
Starkehre replied to mumtoshelley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You have wormed the dog today.... she feels crappy and flat cause you wormed her. This is common and normal. Give her another 24 hrs or so prior to making a judgement on how she feels. It will take a couple of days for the worming treatment to have done it's job, be out of her system and for her to have benefitted from it. Like others have said, look into a complete diet change, but this should be discussed with your sister as she owns the dog. Whippets need plenty of warmth, particularly if they are under weight. She may be unwell, or she may be struggling to improve because of the poor diet she is on, the weather being colder now and perhaps she did require a good worm out. Ensure she is either kept inside or is wearing a quality, warm dog coat. If no noticable improvement in her general demeanour by Monday, take her to a good vet. And try not to expect weight gain over night. -
The crimps are J clips. I bought I think a pack of 100 for about $4-$5 at Bunnings and they sell the J clip pliers with about 20 J clips for $9.95. Because I like a good bargain I bought 2 sheets of the wire mesh from a local produce and rural fencing centre for $29 a sheet, each sheet 2400x1200, Bunnings is $44.90 for a sheet at 1800x1200..... I didn't use j clip pliers, I just used a normal pair of pliers, it took me a few goes to get the hang of it but once the 2 bits of wire mesh have been folded in the clip it's just a matter of folding the shorter side of the clip in tighter and then the remainder of the clip around. To mount the cage to the brick work I just bought 2 lengths of galvanised strapping 600m. It looks like this (http://www.ryanairco...sed.banding.jpg) All I did was cut them into individual sections with 2 holes and bent them over to make a u mount type bracket. I will take some pictures of them for you. Thanks so much Yorto. I will set OH to work this weekend :D More photos would be terrific, thank you, much appreciated.
