  1. Weifront .... sorry, couldn't help myself.
  2. You are spot on there Megan and that is where research comes into play. It can be challenging but tracking down and speaking to people that not only show their dogs successfully but have been in the breed for a long time, train and compete in dog sports available to their breeds that is the same as or closely resembles what the breed was originally bred for is strongly recommended.
  3. It is a great question you ask and already well answered by others. What pops out to me in your post that I am wanting to respond to specifically is that similarly to what some have mentioned (and in no way is this reflecting on the OP at all nor is it intended to be about pet owner bashing) the breed standard usually calls for specifics in each breed's temperament. A particular breed of dog that exhibits correct temperament to breed standard may not be what one pet owner considers "best temperament" for them personally. Therefore this dog does not have an "incorrect or bad temperament" but the pet owner perhaps has not done their home work comprehensively or has not been honest with themselves regarding their capabilities or lifestyle. For me breeding is about the whole package - health, type and temperament. Temperament is of utmost importance to me, particularly in my breed. But that still does not mean that a Rottweiler with correct temperament is for everybody. I will even go one step further and say that often the most ideal pet only Rottweilers often have slightly incorrect temperaments, yet make for a brilliant pet. I am sure similarly could be said for many working dog breeds. So then in a litter bred by an ethical registered breeder that always endeavours to produce the best puppies on every level, there may be a pup or two that exhibit a temperament that could be more suitably homed in a pet style situation. These breeders would know this and home these pups accordingly. For a pet person, these pups and breeders are gold if you can find them. If I was looking to purchase a pet only, I would still look for a breeder that breeds as closely to breed standard as they possibly can and produce show quality puppies that work well... but I would be open with the breeder about what I wanted in my pet and ensure they chose me the puppy to suit what I had to offer. I would not choose to buy a pup bred by breeder with less expectations, goals and ethics perhaps breeding for the pet market because they usually have no idea what they are producing and the pup would likely not have as good a temperament as the forementioned pup.

  6. I know this is going to sound harsh and I apologise for that... but judging by the content in your posts, IMO it sounds as though you should not be mentoring anybody and your mentoree should not be breeding.
  7. Hi SC, thank you for Emma's updates. Just love that beautiful photo of her 7,7,7, birthday cupcake. Please do your best to trust yourself that you made the right decision and not talk yourself into wondering about any possible doubt or regret. Any negative talk is just that and it will only lead to negative feelings which are unhealthy. "I made the right decision, I am comfortable with it and so is Emma" :) I am so glad you and Emma are smelling the roses and treating each day as a special treasured moment together. It is wonderful that she is feeling well, makes me smile. Please give her a big hug from us and one to you also. Take care SC. XX

  9. That's fine Megan, understand perfectly. We will throw an extra bag in if we can fit it. The trial will be pretty much all day, but I am not certain of what time we will be leaving. We are now taking an extra car to fit orders in, so will throw in a few extra bags if you or anyone else wants some. The food will be at KCC Park definitely at least between 9 and 2 tomorrow, maybe later :)
  10. Hi Megan, Yes, the Schipperke Club has their open agility trial tomorrow. I believe it is being held on the front grassed section of the grounds. Starts at 8.30am. Please confirm if you wish to order a bag of adult or puppy and we will ensure we have it on board for you.
  11. Hi all, we will be at KCC Park tomorrow - Sat 21st - over at the agility - so if anyone would like to collect their Black Hawk 20kg bags of Adult or Puppy, we are taking orders now. We have limited space so will be bringing ordered bags only. Please pm us with your details. Meg & Mark K9+ Thanks :)
  12. Gorgeous Pers BTW, I love the name "bitch" That's hilarious.
  13. Couldn't agree more. I have a brilliant vet. Highly respect them. They are always asking me for advice in areas that are less their forte. Not my current vet but several previous ones I have been to did not know what cold tail was, had never heard of it nor any of the several other names it has. A brilliant specialist vet I got to know very well because of a serious illness my dog had (she basically saved my dog, so I think she is God) spent one of our specialist consultations asking me a miriad of questions regarding dog behaviours and puppies. I don't have a problem with that. Two vets I know still do not believe me that suprelorin temporarily makes males lose testosterone based muscle (muscle atrophy) around the head, even when I showed them the measurement evidence. Like I said previously, great diagnostics, administers of drugs and surgeons. I have yet to come across any vet (and I have been to many many) that really understands about the risk during growth related to exercise. Not to say they aren't out there, but my guess is they are far and few between. It is just not something they have to be versed in. It is not about thinking less of vets, not respecting them or not trusting them, it is about knowing what areas they are correctly trained in. Vets are trained to heal and repair. I would never ask a vet about exercise in a young pup as I already know that the answer I would get is unlikely to be something I would agree with, so I just don't go there. Good breeders of said breeds are the ones to speak to about such things. And furthermore, it is an amazing beautiful thing seeing a brilliant open minded vet working hand in hand with a brilliant breeder on issues with dogs. These vets respect these breeders and learn a lot from them too. I have seen it in action time and time again.
  14. Well, I wasn't going to say anything as I have no proof, only anecdotal circumstantial evidence, but I believe that glucosamine condroitin may be a cause of things like OCD in growing dogs, particularly larger breeds. The cases I know of are way too many to be a coincidence for me, and I know I am no the only one that has similar opinions on this. I love glucosamine, big advocate for it, but not in youngsters and not as a preventative.
  15. Good point Clyde. I think the difference is that possibly pet and sporting dog owners as opposed to serious working farm dogs are not necessarily weaker/softer, but some of the owners may be a tad more wary of these mentioned issues. I totally get that farm working dogs have a lot of hard work to do and I love a dog that is working doing what it was bred to do... but saying that they didn't have any joint problems may not necessarily be fact. I am not saying that they did have joint problems or that they would definitely get joint problems if exercised hard from a young age, but dogs in drive will often not allow issues to be visible in movement... meaning, if they are sore it may not be apparent. These dogs' work ethic is so strong, that they would work regardless of pain. I have my dogs gone over by their myotherapist every fortnight. Sometimes I can tell if they are sore prior to being checked and other times it is not visible. I prefer to have them fixed anyway because I do not want them to suffer and I want them to achieve their best. Anyway, just my opinion. Personally, I would not risk over working a young pup. Not worth it to me, but it is a personal thing.

  17. Hugs to you LC. Charlotte is such an adorable girl.
  18. In explanation - On leash exercise whether it be walking, jogging or alongside a bike is not free exercise. Even if the dog is coming along willingly, this does not mean that the physiological is not crying out for rest, even if it is walking pace alongside a bike for minutes, it is still known as forced exercise. Dogs have an innate need to please us, follow us and be with us. Working dog breeds particularly want/need to work and many of them have relatively medium to high drive, so as pups they do not know when enough is enough. As an owner it is up to us to know how much forced and free exercise our pups should be allowed to have without causing long term injury and growth issues. But, it sounds like you have all the answers and do not need any help. Best wishes :)
  19. All of above. Sorry to surprise you, but many vets do not understand puppy exercise requirements. Vets are terrific diagnostics of illnesses and administers of drugs and sometimes great surgeons. Your vet has given you incorrect information regarding biking for a dog of this age. When you wish to know other things, ask the brains trust here. There are many experienced Border Collie folk in this forum that are always very happy to offer correct and sound advice. Free running only, plus short on leash walks consisting of training, plus brain training stimuli. I would suggest you take the conception of tiring your puppy physically completely off the table. If you want calmness, you train for calmness. Right now you are training your dog to be energetic and busy. Crate inside at night for calmness. If you want an always busy, high energy dog, you will not loose this by training calmness now. You can train your dog "in drive" to teach it to switch on and off. IMO we should never "have" to exercise their dogs because of what their dog might/will do regarding damage/anxiety etc. It should be done out of physical or mental needs and also enjoyment. Your dog is too young to fit into the physical need category and therefore more damage than good can/will occur. Awesome work with your training :) Lovely pup. Wish you the best with him. Added, I would not be feeding joint formulas to an adolescent that does not have known joint issues. I would not be recommeding you using it as a preventative and over working your pup. JMO
  20. SC, I am glad you have been to see Charles, even though it has not really provided you with any better news... he is amazing, the very best. SC, although I know what I would do in your situation, I will not offer you my advice either way, because I believe it is wrong to do so. The reason being is that we are all different. What might be right for one person is not necessarily right for another. And yes, you need to decide what is best for Emma, absolutely, but above all and IMO most importantly you need to decide what is best for you..... You are the one that has to live with your decisions. Making emotive decisions based on what others would do according to their emotive thoughts and opinions is not going to help you in the long run. Yes, take all the relevant facts, statistics, data available to you and other medical information into account, but the final decision (which is not a right or wrong decision) comes down to how you feel about everything. It is less about fact and more about your feelings. In situations like this, this is what I do... take some time for myself when I am ready, clear my mind for a few moments... and when the time is right, the decision will just come to me. And until I am 100% certain that I am comfortable with that decision, I won't make any, I will just roll with it for a while... that is what I would do anyway. SC, I am often thinking about you and how this is such a difficult time for you. There really is little anyone can do to help how you are feeling right now, but please know that we all care about you, support you and of course the beautiful Emma is deeply loved by many. Also, thank you for allowing us the privilege to follow yours and Emma's difficult journey.
  21. ... and what's not to say that he doesn't like them being this way. Perhaps he raises them to not like strangers, and perhaps they may not act this way on walks with anyone unless this person is engaging him in conversation and directly approaching, but just obviously walking by? You just never know. I too tend to think one was this way inclined and the other copied the behaviour, but have no way of knowing. For whatever reason the dogs are the way they are does not indicate that they are not well cared for and loved by a responsible owner. I do not think it is odd at all. Personally I would not enjoy owning dogs like this, but some dogs just do not like strangers and you would not notice unless you were doing exactly what you were doing.
  22. Our dogs are inside and outside, on our terms. When they are outside they have access to their own "dog room" (our fully insulated double garage) which also has a door into the house, heater, comfortable dog beds etc. Over night during Winter some of them are locked in the dog room with the heater on and the others (youngies and oldies) are crated inside our bedroom or the livingroom. During the day they are in and out and spend their inside time in the livingroom where they have their own futon couch and lounge. We rarely go out without our dogs, but if we do, they are left in or out depending on the time of day, weather conditions and duration of us being out. Although I am not big on judging others on how they do things with their own dogs, each to their own I believe, I am neither a fan of my own dogs being inside 24/7 or outside 24/7. What I do find odd is when some owners believe they are better owners for having their dogs inside all the time, allowing them outside to eliminate only, when this fashion of dog ownership does not offer the dogs enough vitamin D nor enough free stretched out movement of their joints. Many of these same people would rubbish owners for having a small backyard for their dogs, yet they feel it is OK to keep their dogs inside their home in the same amount of space or less. Puzzles me. I think dogs should be able to exhibit normal dog behaviours by fossicking, digging, eating grass etc for at least some part of each day and absorb as much of the suns' rays as they require. I would never crate a healthy dog all day and all night.
  23. Hi all, was wondering if anyone can confirm for me please... is the Pavilion going to be only half in use for tomorrow's show or in full use? And, does anyone know what the condition of the new surface is like please? Is it still tacky/smelly or fully dried? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)
