Is There A Market For Whelping Boxs?
Starkehre replied to GermanShepherd1's topic in General Dog Discussion
I love your idea and may be very interested (also planning a litter next year and are in the market for a whelping box anyway) . Unfortunately we are flat out packing to head away for a show so don't have time to comment right now, but will look again and get back upon our return :) -
Thanks for the recommendations guys Soft styled crates are easy to keep clean. The waterproofing is on the inside so typically any drool or soiling of the crate can be easily wiped out with a damp cloth. For freshening every so often you can wipe the inside of the crate skin with some diluted white vinegar or a disinfectant wipe. Alternatively you can give the inside a quick spray over with a disinfectant freshening spray. None of these products will negatively impact the dog and a good idea to allow it to dry out and air before allowing the dog access again. Keep bedding clean and do not pack the crate away unless the inside is completely dry. If a more thorough cleaning of the skin is required you can remove the entire skin from the frame very easily and give it a gentle hand wash, concentrating on any soiled areas. A toothbrush or nail brush can be used for problem areas if required. When refitting the skin to the frame, you may be required to go through the bedding in process again as if new. I will say that though we conduct many experiments with our crates to ensure we know exactly what they can endure, in all the years I have been using our crates I have never had to remove a skin for cleaning. A wipe with a damp cloth is all mine have ever needed and even then only 2 or 3 times a year... and those that know me know I am a clean freak LOL. Sheena, sadly I will agree that what you say if often quite the case. Many of our customers come to us after buying an inferior crate and realising that it won't last the distance. We also have tough, inexpensive, purpose designed crate mats. These DuraTuff Crate mats (not yet on our website) are designed to be well padded for protection of the dogs' joints without being so thick that they take up too much of the crate height. These mats can also be safely collapsed inside the crate without distorting the integrity of the frame like thicker bedding can. K9+ Soft Dog Crates

Rules came into affect towards the end of last year but provided semen is cleared into Australia before the end of this year one can still collect/import under the old regs. So there has been a buffer of either rules are OK all this year. Here is a copy of the old and new AQIS import regulations to compare the differences NEW DAFF Canine and feline Semen imports.pdf

What an awesome thread!!!! Just returned home from a Rottweiler specialty in Perth, so sorry for not seeing this thread sooner. Fantastic photos guys, and so lovely to see there are a few Rotti fans out there. It can be such a tough battle owning a breed with such a negative stigma attached... so this is really nice :) Gott get to bed and catch up on some sleep, but just to juice up the fans... a piccie of Seven at 8 weeks after digging in her sand pit -
Might it have been laryngeal paralysis. Not uncommon in older dogs. Not a lung condition but a degenerative condition of the muscles and/or nerves controlling the larynx. If so treatment would vary depending on the cause.

Yep... Neocort for eczema, Rapidgel is amazing, shot of Zydax for aches n pains, Nutrigel for energy (some for the dog some for yourself before an agility run). Most of my doggie homeopathics and chinese herbal medicines are all human use anyway, so we just share.

excellent post, cassie. yes- a new pup is not the time to experiment ;) Your dog will have many years to enjoy the benefits of a raw diet ..those first few months will be best served by one of the suggested ready made foods , etc. and - Vets are NOT dieticians - they are diagnosticians/surgeons ..and do very well at that :) (plus many vets will "push" you to buy the food they get with deals from certain petfood companies ) I love feeding raw diets, big fan... but I am with others, I would not risk raising a large or giant breed on a raw diet. too easy to make mistakes, particularly if you are not an experienced raw feeder. The vast majority of giant breed breeders I know would all use a quality commercial dry diet at least for the first 12 months. and many of them use adult food only. Have a chat to your breeder about what you are intending on doing and ask her to explain why she feeds and recommends what she feeds. It is wonderful that you have all the very best intentions for your new puppy and kudos to you for doing so much research. However, it is very very easy to muck up the growth of a larger breed of puppy feeding it raw. It is almost fool proof feeding a good quality commercial dry particularly if recommended by your breeder. You can switch to raw when the puppy is past the danger stages. It comes down to risk evaluation and respecting your breeders' wishes. Best of luck with everything. :)

Feeding Coconut In Non Oil Form
Starkehre replied to Ivory & Beau's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We just feed the whole raw coconut. Dogs love chewing them up just as they would a bone. We supervise and only do it every month or so. -
And another thing to watch out for CG... some people will state/advertise that the parents of their puppies are pedigree, when what they mean is that they are pure bred. Now, some of us might argue about what the technical definitions of these terms are. But typically what most of us will say is that a dog is only a pedigreed dog if it has pedigree paper to say so. If it doesn't it may be a pure bred dog, but there is no proof of this anyway. So, if one was to make inquiries with one of these advertising breeders that are "registered" and the sire and dam are "pedigreed", a few of the first things to find out would be: 1. What body/council is your registration with? If it is their state KC such as CCCQ, what is their breeders prefix? 2. Am I able to view the parents' pedigree/registration papers? 3. Are these dogs both on mains register? 4. What are (if any) health testing requirements in this breed? And may I view these results?
-
Sadly it happens all the time CG. Sometimes out of greed, sometimes because they like the idea of breeding a litter. They may have conned their breeder into selling them a puppy under false pretences or may have decided to breed later on. Many breeders won't desex puppies prior to selling them for health reasons, so they have to rely on their research of these puppy buyers, some trust and their gut instinct. Usually this is enough. But as you can see, sometimes it is not. Keep in mind, many of the pedigreed dogs you see being used to breed may well be on Limited Register. This won't physically stop owners from breeding their dogs. all it means is they cannot exhibit the dog or register it's progeny. As for the region, puppies are flown from state to state everyday in Australia, travelling to their new homes. Nothing difficult about moving puppies over long distances. So, you see it is really tricky for breeders that are trying very hard to do the right thing when puppy people are not always trust worthy.

Unless it's the same breeder from the other thread?? Is it the registered breeder selling unregistered puppies? If yes then you can report to the states Canine Council. Even so, it's still not illegal. Just in breech of COE and the registered breeder can be held accountable by their state KC if reported, that's all. It is not illegal to breed pedigree or non-pedigreed dogs with or without out being an ANKC registered breeder. Many of us pure breed enthusiasts will not agreed with such practises or like it at all, but there is nothing anyone can do if they ticking all their local council by laws. I doubt this breeder has any registration other than possibly with their local council, which is a totally separate thing. CountryGirl, we all want to help you. If we are not answering your questions properly or clearly, please ask them again or let us know so we can try to be very clear in explaining everything to you. :)

"pet Only" - Not Registered Litters
Starkehre replied to CountryGirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
I know for a fact that you are quite right in what you say some registered breeders are doing. And I'm not even stating my opinion on breeders doing this. However, I am pretty sure that we could not accurately describe someone that knowingly breeches a Code of Ethics as ethical. Just saying As far as whether or not the breeder the OP was in discussions with was doing this, I have no idea, but my gut feeling says probably not. I have a feeling this so called breeder was not registered with anything but the local council, no prefix. A quick look at the actual ad, maybe even a website and a chat with the breeder would pretty quickly sort the chaff... if one had experience in what to ask for and what the correct answers should be. This is why it can be so difficult for first timers. I certainly sympathise. I hope the OP does not totally disregard the possibility of purchasing a pedigreed puppy from a reputable registered ethical breeder purely based on this negative experience. There are loads of wonderful pedigree dog breeders out there. The collective DOL brains trust has on many occasions assisted/guided first time pedigree puppy buyers whom have gone onto owning their dream puppy. This could be another such experience :) -
Yeh, sounds like the person in Brisbane is a puppy agent..... Unless the breeder is the person in Brisbane and the bitch and/or puppies went over to NZ for "other" reasons.... just trying to piece it all together. Certainly hope the puppy has a full and speedy recovery :)
