We now have ears as well as eyes and the Puppy culture training process has started. for the last few days we have been working solidly on startle/recover responses. The puppies are taking everything in their stride and nothing bothers them at all. We've opened up their whelping area and started adding a few different things. We will be changing toys and equipment daily to help develop their habituation skills -

One of my all time favourite “doggy” books is Calming Signals by Turid Rugaas. Until I read that, I knew virtually nothing about the concept. It is fascinating to see a dog employ them and even a small understanding by a person is invaluable for the well being of the dog. Could not agree more DDD!! :) -

Thank you DDD. She is a lovely girl, very sweet. She is an incredible mum. I sort of knew she would be given her temperament, but you never know until the time comes. From a distance I can ask her to stand up in the whelping box and turn around to she is offering the other side of the milk bar. She has the routine down pat. :D Early this morning little green girl (who is freaking hilarious and so full of spunk and attitude) got right into Seven's face and barked at her... twice. Seven gave her the best calming signals and green responded. So she is teaching them amazing social skills too. -

Puppies all have their eyes open now and they are interactive. They are so funny and cute. Barking, chewing, slow mo playing. They are just adorable. -

Thanks T. They do smell so good. -
Me too denali... know of Cav and Rotti homes. :) Another popular mix for sure I find Rottis cohabitate with any breed really well, size isn't important. They are really troublesome with canine family members. And the odd one or two that are, it can almost always be put down to owner error or lack of leadership. They are definitely a strong willed dog who thrives on firm boundaries and assertive leadership.

Yeh and they do vary considerable between lines, like most breeds I guess. The dogs we have and will always aim to breed will be medium drive, good work ethic, confident, thinking dogs. They will not be quick to react and they will tolerate a lot. They will be very well rounded in temperament, very adaptable, no anxiety, stress or otherwise. Great off switch, affectionate and loads of fun. :) I really do love the breed. There is almost nothing the Rottweiler cannot do, super versatile. :D If you ever decide to cross over to the dark side :) ... let me know and I can suggest some reputable breeders in your area that are due to breed when you are ready :)

Photo of Brown Boy by Silent Child. Thanks mate -
Totally agree, the tails can make them appear longer, particularly if the eye has been accustomed to seeing them docked. Yeh, they would absolutely suit one another as compatible breeds. That said Rottis get along with any breed. It is super common for Rotti folk to have a second breed (nana breed) which is usually the Pug or French Bulldog. I have owned several bull breeds and quite a few Rottis. No, their play style and general demeanour is totally different. They are not as pushy and rough. They generally don't have the same sense of humour either, so some of them do. Being a guardian breed they take life pretty seriously, and though they certainly know how to have fun, they are not what I would consider a clown breed like bull breeds can be. Their emotional connection with their owner tends to be more passionate and intense. They are far easier to train than BTs as they love to work and thrive on having a job to do and pleasing their owner. Bitches take life a little more seriously. They are better workers, more protective and loyal. The males are goofier and have a little more fun, but unless bred and raised right, they can sometimes be belligerent towards other dogs.

OMG, I actually have had 6 hours sleep in the last 24 hours. That is the most I have had for 12 days. I feel fabulous

I know what you mean Juice. I have owned BTs in the past and absolutely adore them. I would like to have another again one day. You and I may end up swapping breeds LOL... just kidding of course, couldn't see myself without at least one Rotti now. Reddogs Rottis may be very high drive as well? That could add to the size impression if they are pretty full on. Drive levels vary significantly within the breed too.

Great question sars :)... I was going to call my previous puppy Seven or Fame. We ended up calling her Fame, even though the name Seven came from her being the seventh dog my husband and I owned together as a fairly newish couple (only being together for 8 years at the time. So, when I didn't use the name Seven for Fame, I still loved the name so much that I kept in my name kitty for the next puppy. When I told Seven's breeder I was going to call her Seven, she told me she loved the name and asked me if I minded her using "Seven" as the theme name for the litter. I said she was absolutely welcome to do that, provided I could have the registered name "Seven Deadly Sins" The breeder and I were besties and we laughed about it and said it worked well for both of us. So Seven is our eighth dog together, but that is fine :) What a wonderful story! Thank you. What are you going to call the pups in this litter? :) Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Laziness, Wrath, Envy, Pride plus two more. :) Sorry, can't say yet sars. It is a secret :D but I will definitely let everyone know when I let the cat out of the bag :) -

Indeed He is humongous for sure. Awesome temperament. He ploughs through his siblings on the boob and just flips them off, one at a time. All the attitude one can imagine :D He is precisely his dad, to a tee. Confident with everything, super affectionate and nothing at all bothers him. His dad was exactly the same at this age. -
I understand what you are saying Juice. That said, Rottis are not a huge breed. I often have members of the public approach me and ask if my females are miniatures. And all the bitches I have ever owned are what is classified as Large in according to Breed Standard. Given, the males are several cms taller and more substantial, but there are certainly lines and individual dogs that are on the lower end of BS. Oddly enough, most of the folk in our breed (Australia wide) are women and many of them tiny slips of things. Personally I do not buy into the size question. I have never had to back myself against my dog's weight, it simply is not an issue. They will never come in a smaller version because the ADRK and other breed enthusiasts are so passionate about the breed that no one would ever want to alter it. The breed is bred for its abundant strength. It needs to be able to pull carts, tackle baddies (LOL) and herd cattle. It is intended to look imposing. Our BS caters for 4 different sizes in both males and females that are all considered acceptable, so their size can vary significantly without it being a fault. Even the majority of the males are way smaller than they used to be. 15-20 years ago the males were often considered Large or XLarge according to BS. Now the majority are Medium, some even Small. It is quite easy to locate breeders whom breed for a more athletic dog, ones with slightly less substance and bone, which will not seem so hefty and strong perhaps.
