  1. My little boy Fred has cancer ;) I took him in for his vaccinations yesterday, and mentioned a small (10mm) lump i'd noticed on his inner left thigh. When i first found it, it looked big, but over the next couple of days it shrank so I put it down to an insect bite. A few weeks later it returned. He was due for his vaccinations anyway so it was the vet for him. He took a biopsy, and called me with the results a little while ago, and it is a tumor. I was outdoors walking Fred at the time and didnt catch the name of the type of tumor it is, but he said it's like a melanoma in that they have to remove a chunk of "healthy" flesh around it to try and get it all. That then goes to the lab to be tested. He said if its not contained in the removed part it could spread and re-occur. Does anyone know what kind it is, and what the odds are? He's only 2 1/2, a beagle cross, but far bigger than a beagle, may have some shepherd, labrador, or border collie in him. He goes in for surgery next thursday, but he's young and strong so of course my fingers are crossed they get it all. I just want to hug him and not let him go. Only 4 weeks until his first birthday with me (he was a rescued dog).
  2. Hi all My 2yo Beagle cross that i've had for 7 months has made great progress training. When i rescued him he had none, but now will walk beside me off the lead, come when called, sit, stay, wait for food, wait at doors, all the usual stuff. But he's only good at them when it's just us. If we go to the park and no-one else is around he's fine, does everything i ask, but if theres a distraction like another dog or person, then all bets are off. I know if he sees someone and starts to run, he's got about 3 steps during which i can stop him if i use a really harsh sounding recall. If i'm not quick enough and he gets up to speed then theres no stopping him. He'll stop at kerbs when i do, but if he sees a dog he'll run right across the road. Same if we're at a friends house or such, he seems to think the rules dont apply since he's not at home! He does frequently see other dogs and people, and is never aggressive to them (unless the other dog is) so i don't think it's a case of socialisation. He just cant resist meeting people or dogs! Any suggestions how to go about overcoming this?
  3. He's not as big as a pure lab, i'd say he's 3/4 of the way between beagle and lab sized. And has a slightly smaller build than a lab as well, though still very strong! I'm 6'4" and if he stops to sniff something while on the lead, he can stop me in my tracks. Oh and i'm not 100% sure his other half is lab, it's just my educated guess. Clearly beagle though.
  4. haha, Same as Fred Lizzie, he'll have a go at my socks in the morning, and trousers! I do encourage him kinda, drape them over his head as he's sitting there, thinks it's great fun. Maybe i'll try putting a ball in a sock, see if that encourages him. I've been at friends houses who have dogs who play with balls, but he still shows no interest. Only thing he's ever had sufficient interest in that he's picked it up and taken it out the back to chew on, is a paint roller! (un-used) But even that he lost interest in once he realised there wasnt any food in it! Mostly I want him to be interested in toys so we can have some interactive fun, i know he loves exploring and smelling 9the beagle in him) but it'd be nice to play something WITH him, if that makes sense? My boy:
  5. Tried that too, cut a hole in a ball and stuffed it with treats, and a Kong toy, but if he cant get the treats out straight away he gives up. Only way he'll chase a tennis ball is if the Schmacko treat is sticking out. He wont even chase birds at the park! He will come looking for me if i hide while we're out walking, so thats a kind of hide and seek, but id like to get him interested in toys, if only to keep him occupied, but I just want to be able to play something with him, hence fetch.
  6. I guess it is possible he's not into balls. He doesnt seem to know what toys are for. He has a piece of rope with knots on, a rubber ring, couple of balls, stuffed toy duck, but doesnt play with any. He'll grab the toy duck if i put it on top of his kennel, just to get rid of it. If i hold it and sort of whack him around the face with it to make him want to grab it, he just looks at me with that "what ARE you doing?" look. I can get him to tug on a sock if i shake it around his head, but even that only briefly.
  7. I have a 2yo beagle/lab cross named Fred who I rescued from a refuge last year. He had no training, but is smart and has made great progress, he'll sit, stay, wait for food, walk beside me, come when called, all sorts of things. One thing i cant seem to get him to do is fetch a ball. He barely has any interest in balls at all, or any other toys for that matter. I can get him to take it, chase it if he's really excited likewhen i first get home from work, or when we go for a walk, but he'll only take it 3 or 4 times then loses interest. I can get him to chase after theball, iput a slit in a tennis ball and stick a bit of schmacko in it and he'll go after it, but wont pick it up. I tried putting the ball in his mouth, walking away, and rewarding him when he brings it to me, but he didn't seem to grasp the association between bringing me the ball and getting a treat. Anyone have any suggestions?
  8. Thanks people. He has a bucket of water out the back which gets cleaned/filled every morning, and another inside for when i'm home. He has a kennel in the shade, and has a nice big pile of sand in the shade of a tree which he has claimed. The pile was left over from doing some paving, he liked it so much i just put a little retaining wall around it and consider it his sandpit. He has a clamshell, but not as a pool. Since i did the paving i paved over his previous favourite hole, so the clam shell has white sand in it, and is next to a sprinkler so it gets dampened every morning too, he will lay in it, and its under a couple of shade sails which i put in just for him. the things we do for our dogs! ETA: Oh and yes he could be a tad leaner, but in that pic his back paws are under his belly, makes him look bigger than he is.
  9. Hi everyone, first time poster here. 6 months ago i rescued a little fella by the name of Fred. He's a Beagle cross and I think his other half is a labrador. he has all the Beagle colouring and ears, but is the size of, and has the fur length of a medium Lab. A lot of the fur on his sides and back is short, on his belly its long but sparse, but around his neck and back its long and dense. I brush him weekly and get copious amounts of fur off, but its still thick around his neck. Now that the warmer weather has kicked in I can tell he's really starting to feel it, but i'm not sure if i should get his fur clipped or not. On his shoulders his fur is maybe 10-15mm long, but on his neck its 4-5cm. Should i just clip the longer areas? Pic here should show what his fur is like. Thanks for any advice
