  1. Yep, too low fat for mine. The main meats in their diet by far are lamb, chicken and wild rabbit. Pork, beef, goat, duck, fish and hare are fed occassionally. Roo is a disaster for one of them, and not great for the other 2. But I imagine it suits others very well - you have to find what works for the breed and individual you have. exactly. mine love kangaroo, but being medium-large dogs extremely active dogs, they need some fat-which isn't always in kangaroo. just out of curiosity-where do you get your rabbit from? I really want to try mine on rabbit at some point.
  2. No you just post fact under pretence of informing, but what you really are doing is pushing your own opinion. And when someone critises something you posted you get all agro, defensive and rude. You are being really childish. And when you do take information from other sources, include a link to the original-you are supposed to because otherwise its stealing/plagerising. If you dont have a link/reference-dont post it. Diet is a big deal for most people and they are passionate about what they feed. You have and probably still will rub up the wrong way with many members who feed with dry food. [and from you other threads, you're are insulting and angering BARF feeders] Not everyone believes Barf is good for their dogs. Some dogs thrive on it, while other dogs thrive on dry food. I personally hate dry food but thats my choice-I wont bash other people because they feed it-I have my reasons they have theirs. Did it ever occur to you that in a forum with 17,000 members some of this stuff has been posted before? There is a handy "search" bar. Use it. If you cant find it already posted then post it. Also its forum, things are meant to be discussed. Not everyone has the same views as you, so deal with it in a mature way.
  3. Well my two booger brains live quite happily on a diet of lamb flaps and chicken carcasses/necks for their meat and bone intake and they are thriving. I feed kangaroo to them as well when I can get my hands on it, but as others have said-kangaroo is too low fat for some dogs.
  4. how does an intestine splinter?? isnt it a big rubbery mess?? man this thread is funny. I feed my dogs on Barf too. They get plenty of bones, they daily get a chicken carcass each plus veggies mixed in with what ever else I have on hand. and they rummage through the garden eating grass, baby birds, lizards, pony poo, cats, small children's ears...even getting their noses under the compost bin and helping themselves to the veggie scraps in there!! someone would think i dont feed them at all!! Aussie Stafford. as a newbie, my advice to you would be to keep your head down a little, get to know the forum and read prior posts. every newbie goes through a ring of fire as part of their experience on DOL, but dont let that turn you off of the forum. the nutrition section tends to be a war ground sometimes with people who believe in different feed methods locking horns and big flame wars erupting. there are many passionate dog owners on this forum and many of them do not appreciate a newbie coming and telling them that they are all anti Barf and have no idea what they are talking about. people were merely pointing out some problems with the diet and there is no need to get defensive over it. you can choose to follow their advice or not-after all its your dog. just try to keep the personal attacks at zero-they come across as very childish. people want to help here, yes sometimes it comes across quite harsh and critical but generally what they have to say is worthwhile reading-even if you choose to ignore it. I hope you will find DOL a big wealth of knowledge as I have and many other people on here have.
  5. Mine get chicken frames nearly every day, but I make sure that the excess fat is trimmed off first
  6. we reckon she got it from the RSPCA-we took her to meet a dog we were interested in adopting. She started coughing occasionally a few days later, then it got worse and she was at the vets about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks after the intial visit to the RSPCA. It could be different in different dogs and with different strains of KC
  7. could be the start of kennel cough, my dog contracted kennel cough and it sounded like she had something lodged in her throat. Took her to the vet thinking the latter and he diagnosed her with KC
  8. that is rather interesting, I should stop letting my two boogers eat outside. they love to lie in what was the lawn [now a big sandy dustbowl] and munch down on their chicken carcasses
  9. thats a pile of baloney as everyone else has said. chicken carcasses are great for dogs, my two get them regularly. it keeps their teeth nice and clean, and I find the majority of carcasses I buy have a decent amount of meat on them still. on the other hand feed dogs too much bone and not enough meat/other things, [ie just feeding them bones with a tiny bit of meat on them and nothing else] it can lead to severe constipation and sometimes even death because it blocks up their intestines
  10. That is REALLY interesting...and very scary!!
  11. Some of them are just gross, you wonder how the owners can let them get that bad, and they are often still kissing them and allowing them to lick their faces. I groomed a dog a while back and its breath was just toxic, it was disgusting, I looked in it's mouth and it had wads of hair stuck in between its teeth. I grabbed the haemostats and pulled at the biggest chunk of hair and the whole tooth came out, it was so bad I almost lost my breakfast. shouldnt havent read that whilst eating
  12. Hmmm...so start them in Obedience first? they probably both could do with it :D
  13. I'm looking at starting my 3yo Terrier X in Agility and my 2yo Cattle X in Flyball. I'm rather new to this area of dog sports-never really thinking about doing it until now, so bear with me and my probably stupid questions. Can I enter my two dogs in beginners at the ages they are? Can I enter them even though they are mutts? Where are some clubs in Adelaide? preferably down south What kind of prices am I looking at [fees, equipment, etc]? What kind of equipment would I need to buy myself? What kind of training/feeding regime would I need to put my dogs on?
  14. put on your best clothes and magically all the hair will fly off the couch and onto you
  15. i think its pretty normal behaviour, an unpleasant one though
  16. he was a gorgeous little dog. I'm sure many of the dogs at the DOL meets will miss him
  17. with other kinds of fish, do you leave the scales on them if feeding them whole?
  18. they're fine to give frozen although i tend to defrost them slightly first anyway so i can pull them apart easily [without having to use an icepick!! ]
  19. Im having the same issue with my 2yo male cattle X and my 3yo female terrier X. we currently dont have much of a lawn left [its mainly dust now with a few patches of dead grass] and they dont have fleas [although they are getting a flea bath just incase the little buggers have escaped my detection]. and they tend to scratch at their feet and lower legs so I'm kinda in the same boat
  20. good post. i prefer to feed raw because its good for my dogs and is cheap. and I have found when they were on kibble and canned they were not very healthy at all. i do it in the interest of the dogs, both who took very well to the change and now are both happy and healthy as ever
  21. or that horrible dead seagull they found at the beach last week!
  22. thats not actually true. dogs are omnivores, even though they are in the Order Carnivora and eat a wide range of things when allowed to. my dogs get more than enough food, but will still snack on the dropped apricots and plums from our trees, veggie scraps, anything they feel like eating when i'm not watching them. when an dog kills prey, usually the first thing that is eaten is the animals stomach and intestines that contain [if the prey was a herbivore] partially digested grasses and plant materials. dogs however cannot digest plant material in its natural state [ie a whole carrot] because their digestive systems cannot break down cellulose [the cell walls of plant cells] to get the nutrients outfor them to get the nutrients, the plant matter needs to already be partially broken down. [hence why they eat the digestive organs of prey]. the easiest way for domestic dogs to receive veggies, is for them to be pulped raw to a mush-this allows for the cell walls to break down. some dogs dont like veggies and the easiest way I've found to introduce veggies into their diet is to mix the veggies in with mince meat or minced chicken necks [my preferred way] starting off with a small amount of veggies, and working up the amount gradually. there is nothing more unappetizing to a dog that has been fed a meat based diet to be fronted with a nice load of veggies instead of his usual meat!! although i think i have a rabbits instead of dogs!! they will wolf through a bowl of pulped veggies [by themselves] in a blink of an eye!! i've even caught my bitzer chomping on a whole carrot like a rabbit!! she was nicknamed bugs bunny for the day EDIT puggy puggy-could i borrow that list please??
