Hey Kaffy Great news Give that mouth time to develop.

So very sorry for your loss vernie. Unfortunately the side effects to rimadyl can be quite devastating. This has been known by vets for many years now yet they still prescribe the drug. Many vets will offer another drug which is safer for your pet. I urge anyone whose dogs may need to go on this medication to insist that their vet offer another alternative if possible. Some dogs can be on rimadyl and have no side effects, for others they are not so lucky.

je2910 Ok so I have no idea why you posted this thread, in all honesty. And I dont really give a toss. If you dont show then that is your business. BUT DONT TELL ME I bagged your kids out when all I stated is that when my parents started out showing and breeding, they had it alot tougher than many people do these days. It is quite true. 45 years ago is a hell of a long time. wages were different. Vehicles were different. Raising children over 40 years ago was a hell of alot different to what it is now. So you dont show. So what! Just remember something, if you do gain just a little knowledge from the thread you started. You are a caretaker of your breed. Just because you own a dog doesnt give you a right to breed just because you can. Nor does it give anyone else the same. You as a breeder are responsible for maintaining true to type dogs of your breed to the breed standard to the best of your ability. If you honestly cant do that then I have to question why you own a dog. It is personal choice why people show. Exiting thread cause I can.

Smart remarks? Hills in OZ, no not really. Well not like the mountains I am used to anyway. I have lived in several countries. Seen some real hills. Work dogs on real hills too. BTW NZ is no longer using dogs at the abattoirs. Is this the same for dairies? I think so but not sure. Animal rights and all that. Are you seriously serious????? If the animal rights have stopped farmers using dogs on dairy farms, then they would of stopped using them on Sheep stations. Somehow I dont think so.

Where in this thread has anyone said that your dogs are crap??? They havent. Well I havent. You asked for peoples opinions. What more do you want? Regardless of whether or not you show, breed, trial or whatever you do with your dogs you are the caretakers of the breed. if you choose to breed then it is not all about just putting one dog to another as well as doing health tests. It is about preseving breed type, soundness, characterisitics, quality, style. All those and more. The standards were written for a purpose If you dont like the standards of the breeds you have then OK that is fine. If you dont want to show, then OK that is fine. No one is holding a gun to your head and saying, "you must show your stock" and 3 kids is not necessarily a heap more work. Hell my Mum and Dad had it alot tougher than many when they were raising us. Actually they had the three of us all under 5 years old, but I thought the 10 years old sounded good.

oh sorry RnL and I just remembered there is a mountain/hill in Aus. Its called the Great Dividing range.

Before you make any other smart comments SS Have you ever farmed in NZ hill country? Oh...obviously not Otherwise you wouldnt make such a stupid comment. It wasnt just the cows that he got in for milking in places where you could hardly ride a motorbike into. He hung off Bulls tails and noses, he got the sheep in from hills. oh thats right. Australia doesnt have hills

I am a judge Every single Breed that I have owned over the years I have judged over the years. This is my opinion(obviously) I am not saying that those who dont show are nut cases. But yes many do lose the plot. There are many Bulldog breeders out there who do not show. They have no idea what they are doing within their breeding program and generally dont give a damn what they are doing to the breed. Have I made it pretty clear now? But if you breed AND show, couldn't that mean that you may (not saying will) favour dogs that are like your own, rather than others? Just a thought. And yes, you have made it clear. I am not a nut case, but will inevitably lose the plot because I don't show my dogs. If you or anyone else would like to volunteer to come and look after my 3 young kids some afternoons and weekends, I would gladly take my dogs to training, and weekend shows. At least that would prove that I do "give a damn about what I am doing to my breed". I separated from my first hubby, raised a young child by myself and showed dogs. My parents had us three kids under 10 and showed dogs and did so for many years. And of course you favour dogs that are like your own. Because you have bred to a certain type. It is peoples interpretation of the breed standards which determines the type of dog they favour. "Either a person has an eye for a dog or they dont regardless of whether or not they show"

We worked on dairy farms back in NZ. And raised our own Bulls and sheep while working on those farms. And yes he did work quite a few hundred bovines a year. The smallest farm he worked on had 500 cows plus young replacements and Bulls. He worked on two farms during one year with over 1100 milkers alone on hill country farms No we didnt trial him. When you work 7 days a week most weeks and only get time off for a dog show LOL there was no time for anything else. But I do love the trials. My hubbys uncle has a Kelpie which he does agility with. SS Many show dogs can not perform the job they were bred for. That is quite evident by being around the show scene for many years. A dog show is a judges opinion. Showies pay for that opinion. That is because they can and want to.

Shortstep My hubby and I have owned and shown(with huge success) an exceptionally well bred Kelpie back in NZ bred by a much respected breeder whom we also worked and whom was an excellent cattle worker. I have judged the breed and know a little bit about them Oh and by the way he had lovely show conformation, worked all day(and I mean hard work, in summer and winter) and he also had the correct ruff and brush tail.

In my opinion it is personal choice. I have been a showie for many many years because I want to. Many breeders do a bit of showing only. There is one breeder I know of that in the last 3 years as never shown one of her breeds she has, even at Specialist shows. And very rarely shows another of her breeds. That is their choice of course. I will always be a showie as well as a breeder because I think the two should be as one. If people dont then they may leave themselves open to becoming one of those "rose coloured glasses" type of people. One that cant see past their own breeding as being great examples of the breed, but in all honesty they lost the plot and have gone off on a different tagent.

Standards do change GK. Different countries have differing standards of the one breed. Usually it is in the interpretation of a particular point. Certainy not a whole standard. Standards change because breeders lobby to get them changed to suit their own breeding as well. Standards change because of the pressure put on Kennel Clubs from the likes of Peta etc. Showing was introduced many years ago to offer breeders(working and showies) the chance to show off their breeding stock and to get a judges opinion. I can honestly say that in two of my own breeds now, what an All Breed judge thinks in their opinion is correct and worthy examples of the breeds does not mean the same in my opinion(after being in the breeds for many years)

The standards of the dogs written many years ago as we know them, were not only produced for the working owners but also for the show ring. "Type" is of utmost importance. This is what determines one breed from another. I have seen many many "working Line"(btw I hate those words)Kelpies barely resembling a Kelpie but yet they are. They are being bred by farmers who have no regard for the preservation of "type". Farmers who have no regard in following a standard. Then again I have seen a few show breeders who also do not try to breed to the standard but they are in the minority. There is only one standard for each breed. There is not a working line standard and a show ring standard. How many working line Kelpies out there DO NOT have the characteristic brush tail or coat ruff around the neck. Absolutely critical in the survival of the dog in the outback conditions to keep warm once that sun goes down. So "without breeding to the standard, dogs would not look like their breed" without breeding to their standard dogs would have no type.

Cleft Palate is a birth defect. It is the failure of the palate bones to form correctly. Very commonly seen in Bulldogs and is common in a surprising amount of other breeds. We have always given our bitches folic acid as they come into season and continue this through until well after they have been mated. we have never had a cleft in our puppies. I am not saying this is a complete cure but it is definetly recommended

Pup Died 8 Days After We Got Him Home
Bullbreedlover replied to nixon's topic in General Dog Discussion
The preservation of the British Bulldog breed is in my opinion the most important thing that ANKC Bulldog Clubs and the ANKC must work towards. I hope the day will never come that the Aussie Bulldog becomes a recognised breed within the ANKC. It will be a very black day. The breeders of these Aussie Bulldogs have no regard for our breed and they will never have my respect. Only my disgust for what they have done. If there are ANKC registered breeders out there who think the Aussie Bulldog breeders are doing the dog world a good service by breeding this cross then I am so disappointed. They have not made their breed healthier. That is evident to see in many posts. They are so divided in what they are doing. But this is not what this thread is about. I am sorry for your loss Nixon. I hope you can recover your money. If you are concidering a Bulldog later on then I hope you meet with better luck. debs -
Thank you all. It is lovely of you to reply. The joy of owning dogs is so wonderful When it is time to say goodbye the heartbreak is immense. It never gets easier. Never.

Pup Died 8 Days After We Got Him Home
Bullbreedlover replied to nixon's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am in no way suggesting that the puppy you had Nixon was a Neo Bulldog cross but I do know that they did have a litter awhile ago. Maybe they had another litter. I had a fair idea who the breeders were when I saw the litter advertised and I emailed them asking about the litter. They emailed me back, obviously knowing who I was. It confirmed my thoughts I have had for a long time. -

It is very hard to recommend a breeder indigirl and it is certainly something I would never ever do. Even with my short time in the Bulldog breed As acting Secretary of the Qld Bulldog Club I would advise that if Nixon felt they would like to maybe purchase a Bulldog when the time is right then the Club will be there to offer as much advice as possible to help with the puppy selection process. But would never recommend a breeder. -

Unfortunately Jed, I would never class these people as reputable ethical breeders. I think this would be a long battle -

I am sorry I havent answered your PM Nixon. Its been a rather sad day for me. I know you would like some answers but to be very honest I cant help you really. I am sorry you have been burnt like this. It is breeders like these that we dont need. Their latest litter that I know of was Neo/Bulldog crosses. (shakes ones head) -
Off Topic But Just Have To Share!
Bullbreedlover replied to Danielle's topic in General Dog Discussion
Two sheds rat one 600 cows the other 500. depending on how far away the cows were for morning milking, hubby and I used to share our Kelpie if either herd was in a hill paddock LOL most times they were close for getting in in the morning say 30 minutes. workers would set up the shed while we got cows in. hubby was in charge of herd management and feeding out for both farms so he rarely milked. afternoon milking the cows could be an hour away from the shed but most of them would be waiting at the gate to get milked. cows loved being milked by the way. it brings relief LOL cups on at 5.00am. home for breakfast at 8.30 but not during calving time. depends on whether we had to bring springers up to calve them if they were having difficulties. Basically we worked 14 hour days 7 days a week during calving and mating times. that is without home time and sleep time. calves to feed, springer to feed, milkers to feed out to. Bulls and yearlings to feed. OMG so time consuming -
