Toowoomba Help For Pets In Need
Bullbreedlover replied to Bullbreedlover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm happy to go with the spending decisions of you & people on the spot, SB. I was just tempted to go over to our K Mart & get some collars & leads and send them to you. But by the time they'd get there, the animals' needs might have changed. So I'll continue to watch for your & FM's advice on current need. I can always then top up my donation. Thank you so much -
Toowoomba Help For Pets In Need
Bullbreedlover replied to Bullbreedlover's topic in General Dog Discussion
For those who have been very generous in donating whatever they have to the animals owned by the people of Grantham, Withcott, Helidon this is just a small update. Hubby and I have been corresponding with our friends who were caught up in the Grantham area. We have done a drop of crates(they are there if needed) and food and toys and towels and bedding (kindly donated by wonderful people) And I am going down the range again hopefully Tuesday and when ever needed again. A few of these people have been via ozshow. Quite alot of people via DOL. People have donated what they can and I am really moved by the comments and by their generosity that they want to help all the fur and feather animals involved in this tragedy. The people of Grantham were hoping to go back to their town in the next few days but as some of you will know they found another deceased person yesterday in one of the already checked houses. So their return has been delayed while they re check. I have a few people who I am communicating with as to what the animals need and a centre is being set up in Gatton for when people are allowed to return to their houses. Well, those who have houses to return to. Everyone who has lost pets have been absolutely heartbroken. The uni centre is still receiving animals. They will never turn them away so they still need donations. But the donations will be on going of course. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. People who have contacted me via email and Dogzonline people rock You are just awesome debs -
Toowoomba Help For Pets In Need

Both Teebs But I am imagining just a decent plain inexpensive collar and a plain lead. I can get plain leads from K mart for less price and they will be suitable. If someone donates just money I can purchase some of these. They will always need dog food. Cat food. I know there has been alot of flea meds sent. Mita I can use your money for a few leads and collars. I will ask K Mart for a discount or anywhere I go I will ask anyway. They may come to the party. I can also purchase some brushes and they can stay with the dogs when they go out. I said in another post that alot of the money that the general public has donated to purchase food will be used for Rocky etc. Which is great. I am thinking that the horses do not have alot of food. But I think the horsey community have that covered. I think there have been ducks and geese come in as well. -

Toowoomba Help For Pets In Need
Bullbreedlover replied to Bullbreedlover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Only just saw your post now. We were there at lunch time an there was alot of dog food there. We brought cat and dog toys and bird food of which they needed. I have more food to take later as this will be a continuing saga for weeks I imagine. The uni vet will gladly take anything offered. All the pet stockists in town have donated all their food to the RSPCA so i have been told today. Not all of this food will make it down the range as I was told alot of it will head up to Rocky and areas as they also need it up there. the food and toys etc and bedding I am taking down is for the Grantham, Gatton, Lockyer Valley pets. I will catch up with our friends tomorrow so i can organise for those people who have pets at the evac centre to make sure they are still alright. their pets have been banished to the outside by orders of the red cross who said that the dogs inside are a health hazard. no more a health hazard than all the dirty stinking mud around -

Toowoomba Help For Pets In Need

Thanks so much FM There are some heartbreaking cases with the horses and livestock as well. Truly devastating. It may take a long time for some of them to recover. There are animals that havent been claimed yet as I am sure the owners are either still missing or just havent been able to get in to see them. There are a few large dogs there that may need some large dog toys. -
Toowoomba Help For Pets In Need

For those who are visiting this thread and would like an update. Hubby and I have visited some businesses today. Vinnies and Lifeline gave us towels and bedding for nothing. Pet barn, even though the Toowoomba store has already donated thousands of dollars of food, they came to the party and gave us huge discounts for toys, bird seed etc. We have sent down two large crates as well, which they may or may not use but at least they have them. I have more donated food to pick up next week and will be doing another run. The animals are looking very depressed. Each one will be greiving for their owners. Hopefully the toys and sheeps ears we got them will give them something to do. I am also planning on trying to get alot of beef leg bones from work next week to take to the dogs. The vet can store the unused ones in a big fridge they have. There are quite a few areas of the bottom of the range that have not yet been searched by rescuers. So they are still crime zones. Hence the council have not yet been able to come in and search for more pets. One house they checked about 4 times. Each time not finding anything. The last time they checked there were 6 dogs there which they collected up. Seeing everything has truly been a very sad time. Houses were inundated and yet 50 metres away others were spared. Talking to our friends has been very sad and they are waiting to hear about further news about their town. debs -

Toowoomba Help For Pets In Need
Bullbreedlover replied to Bullbreedlover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am doing another run down the range around Tuesday avo if anyone else would like to help. The people at Pet Barn were just wonderful. Bedding is needed, towels, old sheets. and of course more food in the long run. They probably have enough bird food for now but will need cat food and dog food donations for awhile even though there is plenty at the moment. There are still areas of the district that are crime scenes and the Council has not yet been allowed in to check for pets. Thank you to those who have got in contact with me via this list and others. You are wonderful people for caring about all the animals -

Thanks Teebs -
OK Have just spoken to the vet nurse. They have around 40 dogs 10 cats and about 20 birds in the uni at the moment. They are expecting more animals in as they continue to search the smaller townships. These animals they have at the moment are only from the grantham, helidon area they are expecting a large influx of birds tomorrow and more pets as they search other small towns so they will need bird seed, large and small cat and dog toys bedding, towels, bird mineral supplements, flea collars etc. Even monetary donations so I can buy the food if need be.hopefully at big discounts from the pet stores if they cant give it away Everything received will be accounted for. I will be ringing around all the pet supply places(i know one was destroyed in the toowoomba flood) and the lifeline places to see if they can help with bedding and toys Anyone in the Toowoomba area if you can help please contact me by personal message If you can get these to me that would be great as I can also do some drop offs after work next week and during next weekend as well. I have limited money for petrol as we havent been working since Monday and I dont know what the work situation is next week but if need be I can pick up some things. Am planning a run tomorrow and sunday if needed Please pass this on thanks debs

How Soon To Exercise Before / After Food?
Bullbreedlover replied to Sticks1977's topic in General Dog Discussion
I exercise my large breeds before they get fed, but they only get enough exercise to get toileted. They then get put away for a short time, then fed, then not exercised until at least an hour after. And even then it is only light exercise until later. I dont give my furkids pigs ears anyway so I am probably not much help -
Flood Relief Fund Appeals/donations
Bullbreedlover replied to poodlefan's topic in General Dog Discussion
Poodlefan We have friends who have been found safe and well with their dog. They used to live in Grantham They of course arent members of DogsQld as they do not have a pedigree dog. They will require help at some stage but I am not sure if any relief like this will reach them. debs If you can tell us what they may need we will try to help them. [email protected] I am trying to see if the Gatton uni need any extra help. They have hundreds of pets staying at the uni. many needing care. I think there are still many animals stranded and on top of some roofs. If they need more cat food, dog food, towels, pet blankets etc. anything If I can help that is great. eta I was told there were lots and lots. Maybe there arent lots at the uni according to the news report But I know there are lots at the rescue centres If possible can you help me get something to them in time. Anything at all will be gratefully received I am sure. Am waiting to hear from the vet nurse -
'Query fever' – usually shortened to 'Q fever', was named by Dr John Derrick, who described an outbreak of a febrile illness that occurred among abattoir workers in 1935. He gave the blood from some of his patients to two microbiologists; Sir MacFarlane-Burnet and Dr R. Freeman, who injected it into guinea pigs and isolated the organism responsible – a bacterium belonging to the rickettsial family now called Coxiella burnetii. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transmission Coxiella burnetii is highly infectious and very hardy – it can survive in dust or soil for a year or more, and can travel in dust for long distances in the wind. Animals that breathe the dust become infected – cattle, sheep, goats (particularly feral or wild goats), as well as domestic dogs, cats and native animals including kangaroos and bandicoots. These animals are carriers of the disease. They don't show any symptoms themselves but the bacteria multiplies in the placental tissues, amniotic fluids and membranes, and in their mammary glands. When they give birth they shed the bacteria. They also shed it through their faeces, urine, milk, and blood. Humans can pick up the bacteria when they come into contact with these materials (or something contaminated by them like straw, wool, hair or hides). Humans may breathe in the bacteria in droplets, dust or dried matter in the air, or ingest it via unpasteurised milk from an infected animal. Those most at risk are abattoir workers (and their sub-contractors), sheep shearers, and farmers. But anyone who comes into contact with animals can be infected, including mechanics, farm and station hands, vets, shearers and wool classers, livestock buyers and auctioneers, and pelt and hide processors. Top -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Symptoms Q fever has an incubation period of one to four weeks – in other words, it can take up to four weeks between exposure and the first symptoms. Usually it starts with a sudden high fever with muscle pain and severe headache symptoms – similar to influenza. There may be chills, sweats, cough, muscle pains and fatigue. These symptoms usually last seven to 10 days and the person recovers completely – though recovery may take longer in older people. Some people get complications. Between five and 15 per cent of patients develop a post-Q fever chronic fatigue syndrome that can last many months. Sometimes Q fever can cause a form of pneumonia or hepatitis. And in a small percentage of cases, about 2 per cent, it persists in a chronic form and can cause inflammation of the heart valves and/or hepatitis. This chronic form is very difficult to cure. After a person recovers from Q Fever, they are usually immune for life and can't get infected again. Some people are exposed to Q fever and don't develop the disease (about half who are infected by it), and these people get immunity to it as well. Top -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Treatment The diagnosis of Q fever is made by taking a blood test. People who have been exposed to Coxiella burnetii develop antibodies to the organism in their blood and the blood test can pick them up and confirm the diagnosis. Fortunately Q fever responds rapidly to treatment with antibiotics such as tetracycline or erythromycin. Chronic Q fever is more difficult to treat. Most people with post-Q fever chronic fatigue syndrome don' t respond to antibiotic treatment. People with chronic heart disease from Q fever usually need surgery to replace their damaged heart valves. Top -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vaccination For people working with infected animals, it's almost impossible to avoid exposure. So the focus is on preventing the disease. Fortunately there's an effective vaccine available, called Q-vax, made from dead C. burnetii.. It confers protection within two weeks of being given and protection is long lasting. It's recommended for everyone likely to come into contact with infected animals. But before a person is vaccinated, it's important to know if a person has immunity or not. If they've been exposed in the past, they will already have immunity to C. burnetii. and don't need to be vaccinated. People who are already immune can have severe reactions if given the vaccine, so they need to know their status before they get the shot. Vaccination isn't usually given to children under 16 years. All workplaces at risk of Q fever infection should offer vaccination to employees and contractors. They should also deny entry to those who haven't been vaccinated unless they can be shown to have immunity. Workplaces should adopt safe work practices: they should provide good ventilation, implement good hygiene practices such as safe handling and disposal of animals, carcasses, offal and hides, and safe handling of pregnant animals. Placental and other birth material should be burnt or buried. We work in an abbatoir. We have been vaccinated agianst Q fever

Contact Names For Qld Flood People

There are unconfirmed reports that much of Murphys Creek has been swept away. I seriously do not know though. I hope everyone is safe though. The force of the water coming down the range would of been horrific. -

I attended only on the Saturday and the Club did a great job of trying to ensure we were safe. We live 20 minutes away fom the grounds and in no way were we even remotely unsafe. I didnt go Sunday because I was not well. No one could of predicted what happened on Monday. Even the weather bureau couldnt
