trish, you just seem to want to blame the vet for your dogs problems. firstly you are the primary carer for you dog not the vet. what troubles me is that you as primary carer failed to find the problem with your dogs foot in the month it presented a problem yet you expect the vet to find the problem during a consultation and refused to allow the vet to continue with further investigation. Blame doesn't need to be put in either direction, you need to except what has happened and move on.

Trish, may i suggest you use your spell check on your computer then we may be able to understand what you are trying to say

I must say i am a bit confused. You say the feet are black? Correct me if I'm wrong but this is a Maltese we are talking about? If so then i would have thought the skin between the pads would be pink as she is a white dog. So if they are black then would that not suggest there is some sort of irritation and the dog has being licking the feet causing them to appear black. I am concerned this has being going on for a month without you having noticing it.

I'm with you Jed, not sure what the message is here either

hi lisat, welcome to DOL 30min to 1 hour is plenty for a puppy any longer and the pup will be totally worn out and gain nothing from the experience. I don't know what puppy schools are in your area but i have had dealing with hanrob many years ago and they were very good, maybe someone from your area will be able to better advise you. Puppy school is more about socialisation than anything else and you will learn a lot yourself. When your pup is old enough you would be wise to do some obedience classes. Good luck with your pup, come into the lab tread in breed sub forum and you can talk to other Lab owners.

Mine go outside from the moment they come to live with me, in fact i have a litter of 4 week old pups and they are out during the day now. Just make sure he has plenty of shade and water and he will be fine, give him plenty of toys. You will find he will sleep most of the day. Oh and don't expect the garden to remain intact, my dogs have an area that they know they can dig in etc. On the days you are home leave him outside for a while to get him use to it. If he crys to get back inside ignore it and only invite him in when he is being well behaved. My back door is always open when i am at home and my dogs come and go as they please and often take themselves off outside for a play.

OMG i nearly fell off my chair, no wonder you have had this aggression problem a few times. Never never correct aggression with aggression

same here, my girl would often vomit after eating as well and it took weeks to get a mix she could keep down, she certainly didn't have the get up and go she had previously. I tried to persist but after she dropped her winter coat and her new coat came though dull and lifeless looking i choose to go back to adding dry food to her diet, she has a lovely shinny thick coat and is looking much better.

I Talked Someone Out Of Getting A Puppy
Lab lady replied to Kelpie-i's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
There is nothing wrong with what you have done, firstly you haven't talked her out of getting the puppy but have given her information that has enable her to make an informed decision. The fact that her decision was to cancel the sale was hers not yours. As a breeder i will not hesitate to tell someone that i don't think a Labrador is the right dog for them. I will often tell prospective puppy buyer all the bad things about them long before i talk about the good points. I guess over the years i have been lucky that many of my buyers have previously had Labs so they are well informed about the breed. You can ask all sorts of questions and get all the right answers but that doesn't mean that in a few weeks or months they will still be doing what they said they would. -
yep, I'm another that swears by pineapple, although i use unsweetened juice add to the dogs meal, will be giving the whole pieces a go if needed next time. The longest i have had to give it was 2 weeks by them the habit had stopped.

ok i know some people are going to disagree with this but for me it has always worked. I had a bitch that had hot spots all the time and i would treat with iodine. My vet advised i dry them out by dabbing them with methylated spirits. Yes it stings like hell but if you catch them early they clear up overnight. Must admit i only used it when the skin was showing the first signs of redness not if it has become gunky. Thankfully none of the dogs i have now get them.

Hi Toby's mum Welcome to dol. Come and join us at those crazy Labradors in the breed sub forum. I had a similar problem with my 2 young labs. When i first arrived home for work they would go crazy, jumping up trying to out do each other to get my attention and found if i ignored them when they were over excited and only spoke to them when they had calmed down, it took a bit of time but they eventually got the message. It's important not to react to the jumping, i would simply turn away from them, don't talk or make eye contact. I would go about my normal routine, opening windows, changing from work cloths etc and when they have settle down i would then sit down and talk to the dogs. they would still get excited but by that stage had calmed down a bit and stopped jumping up at me. Good luck, see you at the sub forum

Puppy Pre-school For 2 X Puppies (12 & 13 Weeks Old)
Lab lady replied to Milo-&-Coco's topic in Puppy Chat
have a look at the dogs nsw website there is a list of clubs for your area, you may find they are too old for puppy preschools many only take them up to 12 weeks of age. -
Sound like you are on the right track. I feel you should continue with the training it provides ongoing socialisation for your pup as well. I do believe an hour long session is too long for a pup of that age, why not take a break. I often remove my self from the class to regain my dogs focus when they start getting fidgety. talk to your instructor before class begins and explain your concerns and let him/her know that if you walk out of the class for 5 mins or so that is why. Any decent instructor will completely understand. If you drop out now you may find it harder to get back into the momentum when you return. Obedience training is an ongoing thing and although you may feel you have picked up on the basics after only two lessons you will have much much more to learn. Keep at it and enjoy :p

Loose Lead Walking - Positive Methods
Lab lady replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think it can also depend on the breed of dog and the amount of experience the owner has. By the time most pet owners seek help the pup/dog has already learnt to pull so i feel it often requires a combination of positive and negative. I am training 2 young dogs at the moment and one has been easy to train to walk on a loose lead by using a focus on me method and food reward yet the other responds to the turn away method and is much less interested in food as a reward. -
Unfortunately yes! Had a whopper of a weird phone call at work today. A guy called the clinic wanting some advice about whether it was safe for his 'lady friend' and his dog to do ... well ... things that ladies and dogs should not be doing. Not exactly sure what type of advice he thought he was going to get... other than 'seek mental help' There are some real sickos out there

I like that one may i borrow it

I had a few people say they want a quite lab not a energetic one... i usually say buy one over 10 years old then not a pup

Boring and lonely

the poo method always works for me. to stop her eating the poo add 2 to 3 tablespoons of unsweetened pineapple juice to her meal. Also citronella oil sprayed on the mulch also helps.

In 30 plus years of having dogs i have never found a natural way of controlling them. If I were you i would be using Advantage. It's safe for puppies and works quickly. I rarely have problems with fleas but on the old occasion i do this usually gets rid of them with only a single application. good luck Oh, don't forget to make sure you worm the pup for tapeworm at the next scheduled worming.
