I would recommend a mature shepherd - Save-a-shepherd has many looking for homes, and they are so beautiful. You can see what you are getting, character wise, and they can advise on whether a particular dog is good with smaller dogs. I had a GSD (many years ago) who found a baby bird on the front lawn and woofed for me to come see. He was protecting it!! HOWZAT??? However, he was not good with other dogs! they can be complicated, as they are such an intelligent breed. choose carefully and good luck....

I was also hoping for expert opinion on this.

according to a letter to the Sun Herald online: "Unanimous" writes: "I know the family personally and this dogs real owner is Kathys son Vlado who is currently in jail. I am not surprised by the attack, the dog was always mistreated and taught to attack." I wish he had said who had mistreated this dog, but as there was no name given with the letter, it could be a false statement.

I agree, I think it was Cesear who said "once the harness is on, the dog KNOWS its time to behave" (or something like that... ) Life is so much easier now with the harness, and walks more enjoyable for both of us. I bought a SERIOUS harness: the Supa Tuff, from dogcollars.com.au and had very good service.

More to it than this, but I find it helpful to take on the "you're a silly billy" attitude with dogs that have these behaviour issues. Sometimes WE want things for our dogs SO much that it actually makes things worse. Relax. What is, is. I'm not saying don't try to seek help from a trainer/behaviourist, but I'm saying stop stressing so intensely for how much YOU want for her. Once you've seen a good trainer/behaviourist, you'll be able to adopt the attitude of "oh well, I KNOW I'm doing the best I can ..... the rest is up to you, dog". This will help you begin to relax about how much you WANT for your dog, and just concentrate on showing her another way . sort of of Erny said, but I would say 'silly duffer' My darling old golden Sam was exactly like this when I got him at 8 months after he had been returned to the breeder. He had only been with his owners 4 months but in that time, God only knows what happened. He was afraid of all things, but not other dogs, so I got him a small companion, and this helped. But mostly it was just patience, and not expecting anything of him. I would sit with him for hours, inside and in the yard, down the foreshore, at the beach. When he got a fright I mostly ignored it, but was there for him to be near if he needed to be comforted. He never lost his sensitivity, but slowly over time became a confident and loving dog, a wonderful companion, always on guard for me, but in a gentlemanly way. He accepted pats but not too much attention, from strangers, neverf totally trusting other people. He never became the typically friendly-to-all golden we expect, but he did live a long and lovely life, until I had to have him pts last year. Stay with this dog, time and patience will win out and be so worth it.

No $9,000 is not enough, not enough to cover the cost of all those who had to clean up the appalling mess, try to clean up the dogs and puppies, to cover the cost of rehabilitating them, going to court, and worst of all, the damage done to innocent animals by people who disgust me to the point of wanting to throw something..... Pip (was peppi) was so lucky. I thought it would take so much more time, but his foster carer must be an amazing woman to have won his trust, and the girls who adopted him had him looking like a newie! I could hardly believe it was the same dog we saw at the start....., and looking so happy and free... why was it allowed to go on for so long?? and that @#$*& of a woman left the others to it!! in that pigsty with no food or water??

I think Molly is the ideal dog!!! good on her for protecting you/looking scary without being a savage beast normally. yep, my old golden did something similar when he bailed up a young guy in the garage. He stood in front of me, inbetween us, advanced and retreated, untill the young man went over the fence. He would stand in front of me, between me and any man we saw, while out walking. He was a rescue, so timid and scared when he first came here, and I would never have believed he had it in him. I am sorry I underestimated him, he has now gone to the rainbow bridge. my new girl, Ava, looks too scary to play silly buggers with........lol

this is so sweet!!! Ava loves her tyre toys. she doesnt destroy them, just carries them around and there is always one near her, sort of a security blanket. She is rescue and was not socialised in any way, so when people came, she would hand them one of her tyre toys and get them to toss it to her - her way, I think, of controlling the uncomfortable (for her) situation. she has been given many toys, but her Large Pink TT is the fav....

:D there are two idiots in this world then! I am so sorry to hear about the attack.. I was walking three of my dogs one day - down our street . All my dogs were on leads.. I was about 5 houses from home when a cross bred cattle dog came out of a house - the owner was on the front lawn and he started to circle. The dog was exhibiting very aggressive behavour - hackles were up, tail flagging, etc... I kept my dogs behind me and kept moving so that the dog couldnt get to my crew. I called out to the owner and asked him to come and get his dog before it attacked. He told me it wasn't going attack (by this time the dog was rumbling..) and that "its all your fault becuase if you didnt have your dogs on leads there wouldn't be a problem"... So there are two idiots in this world adding another idiot to your list. I posted this a while back, I had my girl GSD onlead and we were charged by 3 whippets, I yelled to the owner, sitting quite calmy on a seat, to call her dogs, and she replied 'ITS OFFLEASH" by this time one had bitten ava's rear (they were working as a pack) and she was going apes***t . stupid stupid woman!

I agree. my dear old golden Sam only once ever took off and did the exact same thing but the reason?? he spotted the old horse over the road, in its paddock, where it had always been, and on this day, decided it was time to say hello! being big and blonde it was easy for car drivers to see him, and they stopped, I was a mess! dont feel too badly, it has happened to many of us.
