If you really want a rescue why not try fostering a dog first. If all works out then adopt it. The lifestyle that you say you want to provide e.g. exercise twice a day. lots of love, spending time inside with you. Just about any breed could cope with that loving lifestyle, especially a rescue, because many will never have known such. You would have to be prepared to train on obedience because that doesn't come naturally and you cant rely on a companion dog to be protective because a loving cared for pooch won't necessarily attack, but alot will bark at an intruder and give you warning. Remember that a companion dog is not a guard dog. It sounds like you want a dog you can love and if you choose correctly you will get exactly that and tenfold in return. Goodluck!

I voted not sure.... Only because we will never ever be able to stop "STUPID" dog owners of every breed and unfortunately the PB is a sensationalised media victim of stupid owners. I grew up with many people around me owning this breed as it was a very popular breed to have in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. I never saw a dog with issues and back in those days everyones dog was off leash including my kelpie. Never once did I see a problem with people or D.A. This has to come down to the fact that it has nothing to do with the breed itself. A teenage girlfriend of mine owned two of them. They used to jump on the old 6ft wooden fences with only their paws and face hanging over to bark at passers by (too see them from their own yard was as you could see their dangling legs) Any stranger could actually have a giggle stop and pat them. They were as harmless as anything. Such a beautiful strong breed that is being destroyed by human mantality.

Wow I haven't been on her for a while and I'm completely surprised that this thread is still alive. I am equally surprised that people are replying to such utter rubbish.

What To Do If A Dog Off Lead Attacks Your Dog
ILK replied to miss shel's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hi Rubystar, how horrible. I can't imagine what it feels like to not feel safe walking in your own street and neighbourhood. Take photos, if you can, of these dogs and report to the council - see if you can find out where they live and just keep hammering it home to them each and every day - eventually something will happen. We had a DA and people agreesive dog in our street and the owners didn't have proper fencing and let it roam loose, no collar etc. Several of us in the street just kept on at the council - the dog is now contained behind proper fencing and we never see it anymore. Well these dogs were standing in their front driveway with no owner in sight and came rushing out across the road to me to "attack" me. So I know where these dogs live. They got reported to the council right away, but all they did was issue a warning to them. The ranger has been out again to follow up on the initial report (saw them at their house and spoke to council to see if they were there for another offence but turns out it was just a follow up) and I haven't seen the dogs out again since, but it still doesn't make me feel any safer in all honesty. On Thursday night when I was walking home past this house, they had their front door open with just the security screen door closed and these 2 dogs were barking quite ferociously at me walking by (on the opposite side of the road again, I won't walk on the footpath in front of their house!!) and I gotta tell ya, I was so close to tears. I was trembling so much, praying to Dog that that screen door was latched properly! I thought knowing my luck, it won't be latched properly and they will come tearing out at me for round #2! Yes it might be a bit dramatic, but it really has affected me Very awful feeling to have Rubystar what is a terrible feeling for you to have. Very understandable though. A dog fight or dog attack is a very frightening situation to be involved in. I am so sorry that you had to endure that. If only every freakin dog owner on the planet did the right thing and kept their pooches contained you would never have had to endure such a terrible experience and feel anxiety at the pleasure of taking your loved ones for a walk. It makes me sooooo mad at the number or irresponsible dog owners out there. I'm absolutely sure that the number of these irresponsible dog owners out way the number of responsible ones. -
Should I Report This? Or Let It Go.. Update: She Came Back
ILK replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yeah she did not bite me, she lunged but I moved so I'm assuming her teeth grazed and did not sink in. I do think she was going for me though, When I stopped Rosie, she jumped for the nearest target. I just happened to be it. Wrong place wrong time. Was certainly not fun but I am ok, thanks for the concern . If the owner had been apologetic and taken responsibility I wouldn't have had a problem. Instead she was quite rude, even to the point of actually The way she acted is the problem. A "full on attack" is when a dog goes in, intent on damaging the other dog. Its when they're intent on creating a fight. example of a herding breed wanting a bit of a rumble. Do you really think the a dog will fight just cause it wants "a bit of a rumble"? I think that dog fights are caused for a variety of reasons, but wanting "a bit of a rumble" isn't one of them. A bit of a rumble for me is rough play. Not a fight. but that of course is just my opinion My idea of whats happened in this case, is a frustrated working breed with no real outlet . If she is continuously brought to the park I'm certain that her behaviour will only get worse. d woI am very curious as to what you think a frustrated working breed is and certainly a bit of a rumble does not incur a human arm injury. -
They must be fluffy.... All fluffy cats are C.A don't ya know..

Meet My Foster Girl .. And A Bit Of A Vent For Good Measure
ILK replied to yellowgirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
What lovely photos. Thankyou for sharing that story. That little girl is so lucky she found you. She looks so happy snuggled up. Love the shirts they look great -
This website looks interesting & free shipping. http://www.kaccents.com/For_Home/Garden/Dog_Statues_3.htm

I'd agree with Kelpies being fully grown at height in about 1yr, but they do take longer to fill out. Kelpies do play hard and can be very heavy footed. My current boy sounds like a galloping horse when he runs Maybe take note of the surfaces your girl has been resting on. Is it a hard or soft surface?

Should I Report This? Or Let It Go.. Update: She Came Back
ILK replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not a single doubt in my mind. I would report it. The fact that she won't take ownership for her dogs behaviour and blaming others is a problem in itself and needs to be sorted out or it will continue to happen. -
Take this, if I was a believer of BSL I would say so, in no uncertain term. If you want to play games with words, go right ahead. I am not going to apologise in saying what I have said. I still maintain that these dogs are not for everyone and not just anyone should be allowed to own them. A secure fence, an enclosure to ensure they cannot dig their way out or climb their way out and an owner that does not have a bleak past with these dogs! BSL means that these dogs should not be owned by just anyone and that is not what I am advocating here! :D What are you advocating then?

My Boy Is Limping Again After 2 X $5000 Tplo Surgerys :(
ILK replied to BubbaBelushi's topic in General Dog Discussion
Poor thing. Still so young must be very stressful for you. What breed is your dog and where did you get it from? -
I imagine that all animals which pass through the RSPCA are sent to the dead animal dump, as the horse was. That would be standard practice, so the horse was sent there as standard practice. That was exactly my thoughts.. why lie about it? I'm sure the lady would have been much less offended if she was just told the horse was euthanized and disposed of.. even better they could have given her the opportunity to dispose if it herself since she seems particularly sensitive about it and saved themselves the trouble! It just seems so silly that they lied about it and I think it proves that they are running scared and trying to patch things up.. silly silly. Maybe they didn't lie, maybe whoever she spoke to genuinely didn't know. I enquired about a horse at the council animal management centre once the woman at the desk said when the time for reclaiming is up the horses go to the sales. I said "oh so they get dogged", she said "no they go to the sale", turns out she genuinely didn't know that an unknown, unridden horse at the sales has a snowballs chance in hell of not being dogged, a ridden horse is generally better off but still not necessarily safe. I rode a horse in a sale a while back because the chicken s*** owner wouldn't even give the poor bugger that chance and I still had to specify to the auctioneer he wasn't to be dogged because the first bidder was a dogger! Combine that with the fact that most non-horsey people (and even some horsey people) are unaware of the regulations surrounding the burial of horses and it's entirely possible that many of the people without this knowledge assume that horses are generally buried. I've known people who've had horses die and they've just dragged them down to the back of the property - out of sight out of mind for some, well except for the poor buggers on neighbouring properties downstream That is a very good point.. it could have just been a break down in communication. Perhaps whoever it was that told the lady her horse had been "buried" was just putting it politely that the horse had been disposed of. BreaK downs in communication are just not acceptable where lives are at stake. Maybe they should put people in the rescue roles with better communication skills. Judging by the original story this horse should not have died and it certainly doesn't take a brain surgeon to work that out.

What Don't Most People Know About Your Breed?
ILK replied to RallyValley's topic in General Dog Discussion
This thread is great. Sooo many cool photo's of the cockroach's & smilers The working kelpie is not a biddable as people think it is. They are biddable when doing what they love (working or sports) otherwise they are working out ways to get you to do what they want you to do. They need firm stable owners. -
My neighbours cat poops in my yard. They must be yummy crunchy doggy treats coz my boy loves em too.
-
The fact that they removed the horse for examination is dodgy in itself. Even if the RSPCA had good intentions the death of this horse is completely RSPCA fault. That poor woman - how distressing for her and that poor horse what a terrible way to end a sad life.
-
How awful for you pebbles, it sounds like Ben new that you were being separated for the last time. These stories have got me in tears . Thankfully I personally have not yet had to endure this process. I wonder if the really know?
-
Where on earth do people get off even suggesting such a thing Absolute foolishness. How can a person even say that and not think how stupid it sounds My dog hasn't got testicles, I must ask him if he is gay
-
Toooo beautful for words Contgratulations!
-
RIP Chiquito. A beautiul tribute to a dog that was clearly loved.
-
They died together for a reason. Maybe one helped the other pass over. RIP both of you.
-
There is only one friendly way to nip it in the bud and that is to talk to them. You will be doing them a favour if you just go knock on the door, I'm sure that you aren't the only neighbour getting annoyed with the high pitched bark.
-
I am not going to watch it, because I know those images will stick with me and I couldn't bare it. I am already aware so I don't need the mental anguish of those visions. This is the reason I only get animals from rescue. I respect breeders and would at some stage love to get a pure bred, but I have never been able to bring myself to do it for the very simple reason that a life can be saved.
-
I guess this is a good learning curve for you. Your dog may now react to rude dog behaviour and unfortunately as soon as there is a reaction a fight can break out. If I was you I would keep a very close eye on your dogs body language. I hope this experience doesn't have a negative impact for the future.

My thoughts exactly.-----"when in doubt, chuck the idea out" Only do it if you are 100% certain and you don't need anyones input to know that.
