Aggressive Dogs And Group Obedience Classes
ILK replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I've not experienced it personally but I have seen a number of dogs successfully trained in group obedience class on a check chain. From what I've seen it didn't work 100% of the time but the success rate was higher than not. The trainer would take the dog to begin with far enough away from the other dogs not to stress the DA dog, but if it did react he would give the dog a quick hard check and say "Leave It". When the owner felt confident enough with this the trainer would hand the dog over and the training would be continued. I have seen this work so successfully that the DA dogs have eventually been offlead with other dogs, not a worry in the world, but I have seen it go the other way where the dog became so stressed it couldn't be taught obedience at all. I guess these reactions could occur with any DA dog. I'm not an expert on this so I am just offering what I've seen, it may be helpful info. -
What about one of Ceasar Milan's methods where he uses an empty soft drink bottle full of pebbles. When the dog lunges at you give the bottle one hard loud shake to shock the dog into submission and tell him to sit. The loud noise may or may not excite him more but it could be worth a try.

I can't see it either. The clip freezes after about 2 seconds. I work from a high speed laptop, so I don't know why.

Thanks

The dogs definately love lure coursing they look like they are having so much fun doing it. I only heard about it for the first time the beginning of this year. It was suggested to me that I should try it with my dog. I've looked into it but can't find anywhere on the Gold Coast that does it. I would love to give it a go, I think my dog would love it.

Ohhhh please try to talk her out of it. When I rescued my dog he was the naughtiest dog I had ever met in my life - now he is a dream. It is possible with a good trainer, love & patience. There is always hope if you are willing to put the time in. She may just have to get a run or raise her fences with lattice or something.

Correct training of your dog and correct set up of equipment mitigate risks but the sport is NOT without them. Its a reminder to handlers though to check equipment when they walk courses at other clubs and to bring to the judges attention any safety risks. I've seen this done and action taken immmediately to address handler concerns. ILK, how many dogs do you know who've taken themselves out on the backyard clothes line. I've been competing in agility for 8? or so years now and I've never seen a dog seriously hurt (have heard of one serious injury to dog running in very wet conditions but that is up to handlers discretion and I don't). Handlers on the other hand.. seen a few splats involving injury, mostly due to falling. Thanks pf, good to know.

Just so I understand this clearly. What is the best tyre to be used?

I am starting agility in April......The accidents on that link scare me. Now I'm going to fell sick every time there is a tyre. I'm glad I read this thread and I am aware of it though.

Yeah, Welcome. Gold Coast Dog obedience is brilliant at Southport. I've done obedience at that club and they very friendly & helpful. There are quite a few places that do agility on the Gold Coast if you google it. Good Luck!

I read that if you add more zinc to their diet it alleviates this from happening.

I'm so sorry for your loss.....That is a beautiful photo. It shows his wonderful character & smile....

That would be very distressing for you ... Let us know how you go with it.... Good Luck!

Chasing cars is a drastic safety issue especially if your baby gets out off lead. This is cause for drastic measures. I know you may not like what I am about to say, but It worked for me. *A check Chain> I used to take my baby for a walk on a busy road every day. Each time he lunged at a car I checked him which would make it unpleasant for him to lunge at the cars.. I would make the check equivalent to the lunge. If he lunged hard at a loud noisy vehicle, I would check hard etc. It took about 1yr, but it has worked. He is now nervous around noisy vehicles but I can safely say I can have him off lead and he will not chase. I don't use the check chain anymore and I only used it for his own safety.

I have a ball obsessed Australian Kelpie. I would love to learn flyball with him but can't seem to find anywhere on the Gold Coast QLD that does beginners classes. Can anyone help me with a location I could go to? I would be prepared to travel to Southern Brisbane.
