http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/dogs-two-day-ordeal-in-wheelie-bin-20111111-1nb26.html A woman has been fined $4000 after throwing her neighbour's dog into a wheelie bin, where it remained for two days before it was found in a dehydrated and distressed state. Merlina Salko-Sarri, 50, pleaded guilty today to one charge of animal cruelty in Holland Park Magistrates Court after admitting to putting the dog, named Rufus, in a wheelie bin outside an abandoned house. The court was told the pet was used a pawn in a neighbourhood dispute over renovations made by the dog's owner. Advertisement: Story continues below Salko-Sarri had intended to dump the dog in bushland, but panicked and threw it in the black wheelie bin on Elberta Street in Macgregor on May 29 this year, the court heard. An 80-year-old woman, living next door to the abandoned house, heard Rufus's cries and found the poodle-cross wrapped in plastic inside the bin. She rescued the dog and alerted authorities. Magistrate Colin Strofield said any reasonable member of the community would regard Salko-Sarri's actions as reprehensible. He fined her $4000, but recorded no conviction because she would otherwise loose her job as a casino cashier.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-11-09/20111109-dog-pulled-from-beaconsfield-mine-shaft/3654832 A police search team has rescued a dog which spent the night trapped in a mine shaft near Beaconsfield in northern Tasmania. Paul Clements and his dog Bridie were hunting wallaby near Flowery Gully last night when the one-year-old fox terrier disappeared. Mr Clements could not find it and started searching again this morning. He eventually found the dog down a seven-metre deep abandoned mine shaft. He lowered food and water and called police and the SES. A five-man team spent the morning working to free the dog which was hauled to the surface just before midday.

After reading this I decided to have another go at Mac's nails, I was going to take him to the vet so he could be sedated, he has had a phobia about his feet ever since I got him at around 7 y/o. I sat him on a towel on the veranda table and gave him a tiny dry kibble every time he didn't squeak or go huuuuh huuuuh, and managed to clip and dremel all his toes. I used 1 & 1/2 cups of tiny kibble to do the job, Mac upchucked the lot shortly after (well it had to happen)...Penny helped him re-eat it. Anyway, it wasn't too much of a trauma after all, thank goodness for food-driven dogs.

http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/breaking-news/trio-charged-as-fight-follows-dog-attack/story-e6freonf-1226188277099 Trio charged as fight follows dog attack From: AAP November 08, 2011 5:26AM THREE men, one alleged to have been armed with an axe, have been charged over a row that started when a woman was bitten by a dog in western Sydney. A 50-year-old woman was walking through Mount Druitt about 6.45pm (AEDT) yesterday when she was bitten by a crossbreed dingo/fox terrier, police said. The woman fell as a result of the bite and was taken to Mount Druitt Hospital suffering from a bite wound, cuts and abrasions. A short time later, the woman's 25-year-old son approached the owner of the dog, a 62-year-old man who was allegedly armed with an axe. A fight broke out, during which the 25-year-old and a 17-year-old neighbour disarmed the dog owner. The victim's son then allegedly punched the owner in the head, causing him to fall. The 17-year-old boy allegedly kicked him in the head while he was on the ground. Police were called and all three were arrested. The 62-year-old man was charged with several offences, including being in charge of an attacking dog and affray. The 25-year-old was charged with affray and both were bailed to appear before Mount Druitt Local Court on December 1. The 17-year-old boy was charged with common assault, affray and will appear before Parramatta Children's Court on November 28. Blacktown Council has been informed of the dog incident and will decide an appropriate course of action.

http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/year-old-teacup-chihuahua-stuart-little-has-had-a-rough-life-after-being-adandoned/story-e6freoof-1226186731788 18-year-old teacup chihuahua Stuart Little has had a rough life after being adandoned by: Lizzie Stafford From: The Sunday Mail (Qld) November 06, 2011 12:00AM Stuart Little, the 18 year old Teacup Chihuahua Stuart Little, the 18-year-old teacup chihuahua, was found on the side of the Bruce Highway near Gympie. Picture: Marsden Luke Source: The Sunday Mail (Qld) WHO is this creature with terrible claws And terrible teeth in his terrible jaws? He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes, And a silly tongue at the end of his nose. He might look more like children's storybook monster The Gruffalo than his cute big-screen namesake Stuart Little, but don't judge this sook by his cover - he's had a very ruff life. Heartless owners left the 18-year-old teacup chihuahua to die. He is blind in one eye, half blind in the other, arthritic, has severe dermatitis, a bald tail and most of his teeth missing, so he constantly drools as his tongue hangs out of his mouth. Weighing just over 1kg, the pint-sized pooch was abandoned on the side of the busy Bruce Highway, near Gympie, last month. Curled up in a ball on the side of the road on a filthy, tattered pillow, he was rescued by good Samaritan motorists who spotted the terrified hound and dropped him at the Animal Welfare League of Queensland. "He looked so forlorn with his tongue hanging out and you can see through his hair and he just looked unbelievable, the poor little thing," said Gold Coast resident Sandra Armstrong, who has adopted Stuart. "It took me about 24 hours to actually get him off (the pillow). But he's doing really well now." AWLQ's Michelle Critchley said it was likely someone had just "had enough" of the tiny dog, who they believe to be in his 18th year based on his general wellbeing. "They take the easy way out. But it's not the easy way out for the animal."

http://www.gympietimes.com.au/story/2011/11/02/hefty-fine-for-tail-docking/ Hefty fine for tail docking 2nd November 2011 A GLENWOOD woman who promotes herself as a breeder of Rottweilers with natural bob-tails, was found guilty this morning in the Gympie Magistrates Court of docking six dogs' tails, which is illegal under the Animal Care and Protection Act. The 54-year-old woman faced six charges after allegedly docking the tails of six Rottweiler puppies she had bred. She pled guilty in court to all charges. Magistrate Maxine Baldwin fined the defendant $2000, and ordered her to pay $2936.58 in costs. The Magistrate commented that the days of docking the tails of dogs have passed; and in these enlightened times, tail docking is no longer acceptable, or in accordance with community standards. RSPCA Veterinarian Dr Rosemary Miller examined all puppies after they were seized back in April, 2010. Dr Miller stated the wounds on the stumpy tails of the puppies were consistent with having their tails removed (docked). RSPCA Inspector, Julia Steley said it's important that people realise that tail docking is illegal under section 24 of the Animal Care and Protection Act, and it is something that RSPCA and the courts take very seriously.

edited to add this ABC video of Eco at work http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-10-31/spaniel-enlisted-to-find-little-penguins/3611436 http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/breaking-news/spaniel-to-protect-endangered-little-penguins/story-e6freono-1226181162582 Spaniel to protect endangered Little Penguins by: By Lauren Farrow. From: AAP October 31, 2011 8:17AM AN English Springer Spaniel named Eco has the fate of hundreds in her hands. The hound has been trained to protect the last remaining Little Penguin colony on mainland New South Wales. She will sniff out the tiny endangered penguins - that stand about 30cm tall and weigh about 1kg when fully grown - as well as their biggest threats - foxes, dogs and cats. Today marks Eco's first official day at work at Manly, in Sydney's north. "I've trained her to passively respond when she detects a penguin burrow," her trainer Steve Austin said. "She first stops and stares at the area where the penguin has been detected and then she paws that area when asked 'show me'." "In contrast, when detecting foxes, Eco's response is very active whereby she vigorously digs the area when she detects a fox den." Mr Austin said it takes Eco one hour to cover an area that would take ten people four hours to monitor. National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) hope Eco will help them get a better understanding of the penguin's numbers so they can plan protective measures. "One of the challenging things about monitoring the Little Penguin population is determining the exact size of the colony and most importantly the breeding pairs," NPWS regional manager, Gary Dunnett said in a statement today. "Little Penguins are notoriously secretive, leaving for their fishing expeditions on night fall and returning in the pre-dawn light. "Eco will be used today to try and find nests we previously haven't known about which will allow us to monitor any adults and chicks and also to map where they are nesting against where the currently protected areas are." Currently, the only known mainland breeding colony in the state is in a secluded cove in the Manly area of Sydney Harbour, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage says. This colony, which once numbered in the hundreds now only has about 60 pairs of birds. It has been declared an endangered population.

Pity you don't live in Qld...I have a 'Nature Loo Composting Toilet' system that I am going to sell, we used it for a couple of years until we saved up to buy a Biolytix. It was ok and would be ideal for many dogs doing heaps of poo.

How Did Everyone Fall In Love Their Pooch?
Boronia replied to huskies4life88's topic in General Dog Discussion
My old dog, Harry, a cross terrier/many others, was pts during an operation for a tumour...unfortunately they had spread to other parts of his body. Anyway I lasted about a week from missing the tack tack tack of doggie toe nails on the floor, so was hunting on line for a Westie as I had always wanted one. I saw in the Trading Post and DOL an ad for two older Westies about 100k's away. We went to their place next day and had a cuppa outside at the picnic table with the owner. Penny came over and put her front paws up on the seat beside me and stretched back her head and smiled...showing what was left of her front teeth Mac just looked a little vague. We bought them both that moment and they have made us laugh so much. I saw Daisy advertised on DOL as an ex-breeder, I contacted the owner and she said we could buy her.I didn't like her much when we went to pick her up....scatty and no manners, I wasn't really impressed with the conditions and the fact they were selling her not spayed, so just quickly handed over the $200 to get her out of there. They are all my best buddies now and I love them to bits. -
Well you could ask the Queen to help bath Grumpy then

that is what I would reckon as well Aussie. I wonder how it'd go with dogs that do have sensitive skins, probably not too well. -

http://www.gympietimes.com.au/story/2011/10/19/dogs-dangerous-stunt/ Dog's dangerous stunt 19th October 2011 WITNESSING the most amazing, death-defying manoeuvre of this silky terrier's life, Gympie's Donna Dodson will never forget how she came to know the tenacious little dog Pikie and her owner Jan Stokes. Pikie literally fell into Mrs Dodson's life last week while she was driving into Gympie for the afternoon school run. What looked like a rag being blown out of the car ahead turned out to be a living pet - one which miraculously survived. "It was a horrific thing to see," Mrs Dodson recounted, explaining she had been travelling at 80kmh on the Bruce Hwy near the golf course in Gympie's north when she saw an extraordinary sequence of events happen in seconds. "She (Pikie) was blown out of the rear window on the driver's side, went under the car and was spat out between the front and back wheels on the other side. She was then projected about three metres into the air and bounced a couple of times while being propelled into the gutter." Pikie got up, shook herself off and started heading back towards the Bruce Hwy when Mrs Dodson rescued her. Realising then it was a living thing, she pulled over, and in the pouring rain, collected what looked like a drowned rat. "She's a miracle dog just to be standing up... When I saw Pikie rolling across the road I thought she was a piece of carpet," Mrs Dodson said. A visit to the vet gave Pikie the all-clear besides a few little grazes above one eye, behind a front paw and to an elbow. RSPCA was notified and Mrs Stokes could not believe her luck when she heard the good news so soon after losing her beloved pet. She had been moving house from Cloyna, near Murgon, to Eumundi with her three dogs that day and had no idea Pikie had gone missing until she arrived at her destination. It turns out, 18-month-old Pikie is quite adept at pressing on the electric buttons to wind down the windows so she can stick her head out. At just 3kg it's no surprise she was sucked out the window and tossed about like a plastic bag. "I know now," Mrs Stokes said of her dog's ability to wind down electric car windows. Pikie will be restrained in a dog harness when travelling from now on."
