I am with Bow Wow Meow, they were the only insurance I could find that would cover Penny and Mac who were older dogs(7 and 8) when I adopted them. BWM would only cover them for accidents. I did have a claim from them when Penny got a pig knuckle stuck in her oesophagus...they paid promptly, it was classed as an accident/injury. I also have the two of them covered with RACQ as an extra to our house and contents insurance. This covers up to $500 but as the excess is $50 I only get $450 back....it is a great help though as Penny got a tick and was in the vet hospital over Christmas and then 3 weeks ago she had a lump removed from her nipple...RACQ paid $450 for both those claims (the vet bill was more than the $450!) I insured Daisy with BWM as well, as I get a little discount, she is insured for sickness and injury, no claims so far, she has an excess of $500 BWM cost me just under $800 a year, I do an automatic monthly direct debit which does cost a little extra than paying the full annual amount but I can always cancel this if the pi$$ me off, RACQ will only insure two dogs per household. I know some of the DOLers have no time for BWM as they have been treated badly by them but so far I don't have a grizzle.

Man, Dog Stabbed In Violent Rampage
Boronia replied to k9angel's topic in Dog Cruelty and Abuse News
An update to this awful news: http://qpsmedia.govspace.gov.au/2012/02/11/attempted-murder-charge-hope-island/ Attempted murder charge, Hope Island February 11, 2012, 3:18 pm Police have charged a man with several offences following an incident at the Hope Island Marina this morning. Investigations indicate a verbal alteration took place between a man and a woman around 8am where it will be alleged the man slapped the woman in the face, before arming himself with a knife and fatally wounding her dog. It will be further alleged he then stabbed another man, causing serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police were called to the scene and took the man into custody a short time later. The injured 55-year-old Hope Island man was transported to the Gold Coast Hospital for treatment to his wounds. A 42-year-old Hope Island man has been charged with one count each of attempted murder, acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm, going armed as to cause fear, assault occasioning bodily harm, possession of a knife in a public place, animal cruelty and injuring animals. He is due to appear before the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday February 13, 2012. RIP dear little dog -

A good story but it seems there was no co-ordinated animal evacuations at the time. http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/helpers-rescue-stranded-pets/story-e6freon6-1226268300758 ABOUT 1000 family pets left behind in St George by last Sunday's mandatory evacuations have been looked after by dedicated volunteers. With staff from the RSPCA, it was helpers like animal lovers Rachelle Gibbins and Kimberly Thornton who kept dogs, chickens, cats, goats and horses fed and watered. Without a proper register of the animals left behind, the women spent hours visiting homes and checking sheds, bird cages and coops for signs of animal life. Donations from local businesses kept the animals supplied with fresh bones, lucerne hay and dog food while their owners were out of town. "It's been a big job but we've finally worked out which animals are where and which animals need our help,'' Ms Gibbins said. "It's rewarding work to see them come good over a few days. You get a rush out of it." On Scott St alone, the women fed around 30 dogs and a host of chickens, nanny goats, cats and even a pig since the evacuation

Greyhound Wanted (perhaps)
Boronia replied to Boronia's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Thank you, I have sent her the link to and Greyhound rescue and http://www.friendsofthehound.org.au /availabledogs.htm smiling Hollie may take her heart. -
My friend, who I do pottery with, is seriously thinking of adopting a greyhound, She (and her husband) have grandchildren that visit often. The dog would be an inside dog, they have a fenced veranda, but have not put up a front or back fence yet. The dog would be walked twice a day...my friend has a chronic bone disease and must walk to increase her muscle tone, so having a mate to walk with is a bonus. The dog must be fine with children (the grand-kids live with family dogs) and be dog friendly. She would prefer a bitch but made it clear that she can easily fall in love at first sight with a dog. Can anyone suggest a likely greyhound that may do? I will email her with suggestions/photos. Thank you :-)

Senior Sergeant Charles James Perrin, and his dog, 'Paddy' outside what is possibly Gladstone Police Station, c1931. We do not know the identity of this police officer or at which police station they are located, but the dog’s name was written on the back of the photograph as 'Bell of Bookah', c1934. This information has been supplied by the Queensland Police Museum from the best resources available at the time of writing. The Police Museum is open 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 3pm on the last Sunday of the month (Feb-Nov) and is located on the Ground Floor of Police Headquarters at 200 Roma Street, Brisbane. I saw this article this morning and emailed QPS Museum to ask if I could pop it in here. I can, so here it is: http://qpsmedia.govspace.gov.au/2012/02/07/from-the-vault-a-police-officer%E2%80%99s-best-friend/ FROM THE VAULT – A police officer’s best friend February 7, 2012, 10:00 am There is no doubt that sworn dogs are integral to Queensland Police work across the state. However we should not forget that dogs also formed part of an officer’s family especially when they were posted to small stations in outback Queensland. Technically these canine companions were not trained as police dogs but more than likely were used for police work if the situation called for it. Some single officers posted to one man stations, would have undoubtedly found the companion of a dog to be a blessing. Constables Thomas Clines (left), and Herman Schnitzerling (right) heading out on patrol, Mossman, 1911. The following is written on the back of the photograph featuring Constables Clines and Schnitzerling: 3rd May 1911 Dear Mother I am forwarding to you a schnapshot taken whilst out on Patrol, The two dogs take a good photo, the black dog on the right hand side of my friend (far right of the photo), is my best beef hound, I am breaking it in to heel the drunks this crushing season. The fellow walking behind is our black tracker, following us out to catch his horse. Good bye with kind love to all at home, from your son HB Schnitzerling. More on next post

ouchies...poor little bugger. -
Can someone tell me what 'Rolling' means. I brush the dogs, then comb them (with a metal comb) but Penny's coat becomes matted very quickly and I left it for 9 days before brushing and combing last time and had to cut out the mattie-bits with the scissors...yes I know I should have done it sooner she is getting all that fine, fine wispy hair tangled, didn't used to do this but seems more frequent lately.

Experiment: Do Australian Dogs Recognize A Coyote?
Boronia replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yep, so much for the call of the wild! Daisy lifted her head up and the other two didn't even wake up. I had a much better reaction to that little dog howling as it played the piano -

I think the thought of dogs just eating meat is very primal....dogs have access to every food under the sun now... back in the day im not so sure they had ready access to carrots and pears :) meat would be the only thing running around.... I think this thread confirms that dogs like fruits and veggies a lot more then we do!! Dr.Ian Billinghurst, who wrote "Give Your Dog A Bone", says that wild dogs would consume the stomach contents of their kills, thus getting vegetables. As does Dr Bruce Syme of VAN. Yet there are also many wolf and canine experts that state that dogs/wolves leave the vegetation in their stomach and intestines alone. To each his own, but I would be inclined to believe the latter. I had a bitch who was an inveterate rabbit hunter & I can assure you that she ate the WHOLE rabbit, stomach contents & all My dogs (and cat) eat whole prey too, with my cat eating up to 70% whole prey these days. Usually the smaller prey animals will be eaten whole, like the mice, quail, chicks and rats my kitten gets. My dogs leave the stomach and intestines of whole prey for me to clear up. Sometimes they eat them, but they don't usually do. Rabbits will usually be eaten whole by wolves, unlike larger prey like cows and sheep. I agree that wolves and dogs in the past wouldn't have gotten such a variety of diet. That's precisely what the prey model is trying to replicate. Dogs are opportunistic hunters, so they will eat poop, someone else's garbage and gorge on grass until they vomit. Doesn't mean that they need poop in their diet do they. Perhaps try finding videos of wolves where they show them shaking out the vegetation before consuming the stomach. There are plenty. Because we all know dogs are foxes now. That's a new one. I Googled this...may be untrue as it is from Answers/Wikianswers http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Are_dogs_related_to_foxes and this link gives more info--> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080324161252AAkZ0OD
