  1. Either way, Xmas Day is cancelled this year, PD. Back to the OP, what breed of dogs are used for the vermin control? I found this Raz--> http://bundaberg.qld.gov.au/news/2012/11/07/combined-effort-protect-regions-turtles Combined effort to protect regions turtles 7 Nov 2012 Bundaberg Regional Council, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS), Gladstone Ports Corporation Bundaberg (GPC) and Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) have joined together on a project for the fight against foxes along the regions coastlines. The joint project is aimed at determining locations of fox dens along the coast from Moore Park Beach to the Pasturage Reserve in Bargara. Environment and Natural Resources Portfolio Spokesperson Cr Danny Rowleson said the innovative approach had been implemented using trained English Springer Spaniels as sniffer dogs to locate the fox dens and hides. “When the dens are located they are then mapped for future treatment and to assist in further coordination between the relevant organisations,” Cr Rowleson said. “Locating fox dens is important for protecting our turtles and marine birds as European Red Foxes predate on turtle eggs and hatchlings during the breeding season and can severely reduce the effectiveness of our conservation efforts.” “This project will provide very useful information to allow Council and QPWS to conduct fox control in a very strategic manner and give our important marine turtle populations a chance to recover.” “Council is looking forward to working jointly with QPWS, GPC Bundaberg and BMRG to protect one of our region’s most precious resources.”
  2. If you are near Brisbane (Clayfield) there is a LIBERTY TERRIER FOLDING GROOMING TABLE in the DOL 'Classifieds, For Sale- Grooming Equipment' section
  3. Awesome post, pepe Well done to the vermin controllers. As for the comment 'when humans have been eradicated from this earth' by another poster. Wow is that wishful thinking? Bring on the Apocalypse, hey. but who would feed our dogs then Raz?
  4. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-11-09/sniffer-dogs-unleashed-in-fox-fight/4363144 Sniffer dogs unleashed in fox fight By Frances Adcock Posted Fri Nov 9, 2012 12:38pm AEDT A southern Queensland conservation group says it has had overwhelming success using trained sniffer dogs to find fox dens along the Bundaberg coastline. Red foxes are a problem for the region's native bird and turtle population and two specialised dogs have been used to track dens over the past fortnight. Burnett Mary Regional Group spokesman Sue Sargent says the dogs hunted out more than 40 dens between Moore Park Beach and Bargara. "They actually then fumigated 30 of those, so ultimately the 30 that were fumigated were ones that were a very high likelihood that there was foxes actually in the dens at the time," she said. "The dens are fumigated with a carbon monoxide mixture, so ultimately the foxes just go to sleep." The initiative was a joint operation between Bundaberg Regional Council, the Burnett Mary Group and Queensland Parks and Wildlife.
  5. just a little O/T regarding Dougal (if any DOLers don't know)--->
  6. My lot rushed out on the veranda which runs along under the window of the office/computer-room, they were upset and growled and muttered rather than barked. Any news from the police yet YG?
  7. I will amend this post as I have been contacted by several people regarding my donation-offer. So I will not be donating/offering my small amount to her rescue. So I sorry to not be able to go ahead...(I have already emailed tdierikx in regards to this decision) B
  8. I emailed tdierikx this morning re offering a small amount to get him into her rescue, she said:- "I have spoken to Lyn, and she will be in contact with Blacktown Pound tomorrow to see if we can put our name on him" Hopefully tdierikx will update tomorrow
  9. Sheridan: 1206110 Male black grey 1/2yrs skye terrier 31/10/2012 15/11/2012
  10. The little bloke (number 1206110) has until 15/11/2012 so we had better keep an eye on him to make sure he goes to a Reputable rescue
  11. Does the Skye Terrier Rescue (if there is one) know about this one Clover? There's only 11 breeders listed on DOL and the chances of them being BYB is pretty slim. If indeed it is a Skye, it would be worth emailing the breeders and giving them the heads up I started a thread here in rescue--> http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/243164-skye-terrier-in-blacktown-pound/page__pid__6007634#entry6007634
  12. Good on yer lillypilly, thank you. They are really neat looking dogs...long and hairy and look like caterpillars when they are trotting along.
  13. In another topic (the Lakeland one in General) Clover mentioned that there is a Skye terrier at Blacktown pound at the moment. Is it possible for someone here, who is in touch with Blacktown pound, check on/rescue this dog please. Just askin' :)
  14. Does the Skye Terrier Rescue (if there is one) know about this one Clover?
  15. How is Jed this morning Jednkirrasmummy?
  16. I have emailed you yesterday NQ...I am surmising it is the Northern Russell island you are referring to as I have had no reply :)
  17. That is good news that the surgery went well. Poor Jed will be so sore with his big operation as well as his castration...ouchies.
  18. Is that the Russell island that is in Moreton Bay (just east of Brisbane) here--> http://www.redland.qld.gov.au/AboutRedlands/SouthernMoretonBayIslands/Pages/default.aspx or is it the Russell Island, part of the Frankland islands here---> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Island_%28Frankland_Islands%29 I can help with the Southern Moreton Bay islands but not the one up north (which is the one I reckon it is)
  19. I have an email from the Yahoo Westie group: Hi everyone I do hope everyone in the area around Crows Nest (Sydney) has already heard but if not - some (evil) person is laying baits at the St Thomas Rest Park, Crows Nest. They consist of minced meat with either snail bait or Ratsak mixed in - deadly for dogs. So if you know of any dog owners in the area, do warn them. I believe it was featured on TV and also in the Mosman Daily but I'd rather warn everyone than someone suffer by not knowing.
  20. Slightly OT, but not really as it could be helpful to the OP - could you chop up frames and mince/crush them in the moulinex? We're looking to get a mincer, as the mincer attachment for my KitchenAid is only plastic and won't do bone but whenever we get has to be able to at least do chicken frames without having a meltdown. It'd be really easy to chop up frames, especially the backs, as they sit on the chopping block easily and are heaps softer than turkey necks. When you are doing the chopping-with-the-hatchet stuff it is easier if the necks/frames are 1/2-->3/4 frozen as it prevents all the blood splattering over the yard (though the dogs do lick it up  )
  21. My lot do get chicken wings a couple of nights a week, but for their raw meat meals (which I mix with raw vegetables/oil vinegar/herbs/egg/etc) I mince turkey necks. I have a moulinex mincer which is just big enough to stuff a turkey neck into. I buy a 15kg box from the pet food store, Ingams brand is pretty good as the necks are not too big, the store has another brand at one time and they were incorrectly marked as turkey necks, instead they were Sauropod necks and had to be chopped up longwise with the hatchet. The mincer crushes the bone up ok. edited to say that I looked up the mincer on ebay and there is one for $14.95 buy now here--> http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Moulinex-Electric-Mincing-Sausage-Making-Machine-/121004499007?pt=AU_SmallKitchenAppliances&hash=item1c2c6e203f
  22. There is a woman who walks her unleashed SWF dog every day except Tuesday's and Thursday's, it is on a lead those days as the council dog ranger is here.
  23. I am so sorry to hear that your little Cal has passed Kiwioz. He looked a grand little bloke. RIP Little Man.
