Alphadog Animalarmy Rescue Out Of Act?

I bet the wildlife is glad that they are being killed by a desexed cat (I bolded the relevant part of your post Garnali) So no, I don't agree with all their principles either. -
Interesting Article Regarding Zinc Poisoning In Usa
Boronia posted a topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm not sure if this should go in the news forum or here so I have posted it here as many Dolers will have contacts in the States, you may want to pass it on. http://www.ohmidog.c...-kill-your-dog/ Sierra, a West Highland terrier in Colorado, had 26 cents in her stomach. But it was the single penny that killed her. Owner Maryann Goldstein said Sierra was always attracted to change. As a puppy, the Westie swallowed 32 cents and had to have it surgically removed. In March, Sierra got sick again, and X-rays at the vet's office showed a quarter and penny in her stomach. The smaller coin was the bigger concern. Pennies minted after 1982 contain zinc, and that's toxic to dogs and cats, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Rebecca Jackson, a staff veterinarian at Petplan pet insurance, told CBSNews.com that newer pennies are toxic because gastric acid from the pet's stomach reaches the zinc center, causing it to be absorbed in the body rapidly. She said zinc interferes with red blood cell production, and the longer the exposure, the greater likelihood red blood cells will be destroyed. Symptoms of zinc toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, lethargy, red-colored urine or looking jaundiced. "Be sure to bank your spare change before curious pets can get their paws on it," warned Jackson. "and if they do, get them to the emergency vet immediately." Goldstein, who now wears Sierra's ashes in a heart-shaped container on a necklace, shared her dog's story with CBS in Denver as a warning to others. -

Hip Joints And Sleeping On Hard Surfaces
Boronia replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use one of these for Penny who is 14. In the winter I put a blanket and her dog pillow on top and it acts as a water bed, I take them off during the day and she snoozes on the pet-bed if its a warm day http://waggle.com.au/soothsoft-b27/canine-cooler-pet-bed-p372 -
Thanks very much Julie, I have sent her an email with a link to this topic.

ABC article http://www.abc.net.a...t--dogs/4664964 I have bolded the relevant part More than three months on, the fallout of the Australia Day floods in south-east Queensland is still causing pain. A lot of things have disappeared down the rivers and out to sea, but some interesting things have washed up. Agronomists say farms in south-east Queensland lost up to five centimetres of top soil in this year's floods, but one farmer says he lost six times that amount. Monto dairy farmers Russell and Carol Larsen bowed out of the industry just days before the floods, ending a combined 100 years of dairying in their families. But as Mr Larsen says, while he got out unscathed, his son's lucerne crop didn't fare so well. "It was probably two metres over all his flats and just absolutely devastated the cultivation." After two floods in as many weeks, Mr Larsen said the effects were monumental. "I've been told by Landcare that for every centimetre, you lose a thousand tonnes of top soil, well we lost I'd say 30 to 40 centimetres of top soil in places, and that's what's feeding the fish in the Burnett River." While some farmers lament their losses, others are dealing with unwelcome extras. A big woolly guardian dog is believed to have floated more than 30 kilometres down the Burnett River in the floods and has now found a new friend. Desley Warmington runs a small sheep flock guarded by a male Maremma dog south of Bundaberg and she's not particularly pleased that her pooch has taken up with the new arrival. "This dog just basically came in and was sitting around, didn't attempt to chase or anything... (but) now we've had to put our dog into the house block (because fences were washed away in the floods) and this dog is coming back all the time and hanging around." The visitor is starting to take the resident dog away from the house, so Mrs Warmington says the time has come to do something. She placed a council trap on her property a couple of nights ago but hasn't had much luck so far. "I put a tin of dog food in there but she's pretty cunning, she actually sat quite near it, but whether she's not hungry enough to go in, whether she's got food elsewhere."

+1 The thought that Sheridan hates rescue dogs or gets commissions is completely laughable. How about having a factual discussion instead of beating up on posters who may appear to disagree with your beliefs when they are only wanting clarification for comments made. I understand that the RSPCA's way of doing things is pretty awful but to accuse a Doler of doing a 'crawley-lick-b*m-suck-up' act to them is a bit much.
-
Is there any reason not to adopt from RSPCA? especially if they have a dog that would suit your needs very well. Surely the idea is to save a dog from rescue rather than boycott the rescue because you don't agree with their policies. I don't agree with the RSPCA's policies and don't like them one bit, but, if I were looking for a dog to adopt and they had a Westie, or Scottish Terrier for sale I would be first in line. I wouldn't cut off my nose to spite my face...I would get that dog regardless...one dog saved and one happy owner! eta the 'e' in the word 'spite'

I bought this product ages ago, http://www.vetnpetdirect.com.au/VPVITE#.UXWgQhxwbOo the info on dosage amounts on that page are not very clear as when we did some weighing and worked out the amount for Westies (8kg) we found that they required about 1 pinch of the powder daily, I think we worked it out that the 250g pack that we bought would last them 8+ years. I put some in a jar and gave the rest to my friend who has horses. It still works out very economical though. It may be an idea to ring Vet and Pet Direct and ask them to read out the weight/dosages info for the weight of your dog, that way you can decide what size to get. It does have a fairly long shelf-life. Hope this helps :-)

Any New Meds To Help With Storm Phobias?
Boronia replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I know that the thunder frightens dogs, but interestingly, my neighbour has a little male Shih-tzu x, Fergie, he is very frightened of storms and they find he settles quickly when they pull the curtains as soon as they know that lightning will be coming and turn on the lights so the room is bright. Fergie is not so distraught when he can't see the lightning flashes and will settle down quicker. -

Removing The Aged Dog And Palliative Care Forums
Boronia replied to Sheridan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
After a few views when I first joined DOL I don't visit the aged dog or palliative care forum either Sheridan, I (like RiverStar-Aura) found it difficult to know how to reply without seeming trite...how can you convey to a Doler that your heart is breaking for what they are going through. I also have two older dogs and really don't want to face up to the fact that I will lose them in a few years. I do reckon that some of the topics you mentioned could be put in other forums, perhaps, by keeping an look-out for some of the topics that could be moved, we could ask Troy to move them to a more-read forum. -

Kibble Delivery Problems - Who Do You Buy From/use?
Boronia replied to Little Gifts's topic in General Dog Discussion
If I do get kibble I buy it from the Natural Pet Store (I buy Taste of the Wild grain-free) but if you want to check the prices perhaps try Omars, I get Advantix from them and their prices are pretty good. Here is the link to their dog food page--> http://ovedshorseand...s/Dog-Food.html
