Any New Meds To Help With Storm Phobias?
Boronia replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I know that the thunder frightens dogs, but interestingly, my neighbour has a little male Shih-tzu x, Fergie, he is very frightened of storms and they find he settles quickly when they pull the curtains as soon as they know that lightning will be coming and turn on the lights so the room is bright. Fergie is not so distraught when he can't see the lightning flashes and will settle down quicker. -

Removing The Aged Dog And Palliative Care Forums
Boronia replied to Sheridan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
After a few views when I first joined DOL I don't visit the aged dog or palliative care forum either Sheridan, I (like RiverStar-Aura) found it difficult to know how to reply without seeming trite...how can you convey to a Doler that your heart is breaking for what they are going through. I also have two older dogs and really don't want to face up to the fact that I will lose them in a few years. I do reckon that some of the topics you mentioned could be put in other forums, perhaps, by keeping an look-out for some of the topics that could be moved, we could ask Troy to move them to a more-read forum. -

Kibble Delivery Problems - Who Do You Buy From/use?
Boronia replied to Little Gifts's topic in General Dog Discussion
If I do get kibble I buy it from the Natural Pet Store (I buy Taste of the Wild grain-free) but if you want to check the prices perhaps try Omars, I get Advantix from them and their prices are pretty good. Here is the link to their dog food page--> http://ovedshorseand...s/Dog-Food.html -
I received this email (I am on their mailing list) from ACCC SCAMwatch email alert Here it is: April 2013: Looking for a furry friend? Watch out – scammers continue to use cute and cuddly canines to pull on people’s heart strings and get them to part with their money. SCAMwatch has received an increase in the number of scams involving puppies this year. This scam typically involves ads for non-existent puppies being placed in newspapers and online classifieds at suspiciously low prices. The ‘seller’ provides interested buyers with pictures of an adorable puppy and then tricks them into paying fees for transport, customs or medical costs before the dog can be delivered. Once the payment is made, the puppy and money vanish without a trace. Scammers prey upon individuals and families who just want to give a dog a good home. Don’t let your search for a furry friend be sidelined by a scammer – make sure the seller and the puppy are the real deal. How these scams work You visit a reputable newspaper or online classifieds website where you come across an ad offering a pedigree puppy for a really cheap price. The ad may include a picture of a very cute puppy and claim that it is registered and has been ‘lovingly raised’. If you wish to buy the dog, the ‘seller’ will often claim that they have moved interstate or overseas and that you will need to pay for transport or medical costs before the puppy can be delivered. The ‘seller’ asks for payment to be made via money transfer. If you pay, you will never receive the puppy or see your money again. If the scammer claims that the puppy is overseas, they may pretend that non-delivery is due to customs or quarantine issues, and that further payment is due before the puppy will be released. Again, any further money sent will be lost and the dog will never be delivered. Protect yourself Be cautious - if the advertised price of a pedigree puppy looks too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t trust the legitimacy of an ad just because it appears in a reputable newspaper or online classifieds website - scammers often use these. Avoid any arrangement with a stranger that asks for upfront payment via money order or wire transfer – it’s rare to recover money sent this way. Search online using the exact wording in the ad—many well-known scams can be found this way. If you are in doubt, seek advice from someone in the industry such as a reputable breeders association, vet or local pet shop. Remember: it is impossible to import a dog from overseas into Australia in a few weeks as quarantine procedures need to be followed. For details check the requirements with the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service. Report You can report a scam to the ACCC via the report a scam page on SCAMwatch or by calling 1300 795 995. More information For more information about how you can protect yourself, check out the upfront payment scams page on SCAMwatch. SCAMwatch has also issued the following radars on puppy related scams: Pedigree pups at prices too good to be true Cute puppies for sale? Another Joint Supplement: Rose-hip Vital Canine
Boronia replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ness...do you give Kenzie vitamin E as well as the fish oil? there is an old thread here that suggests it may be a good idea. I'll try to find it I searched and couldn't find. If I remember correctly the dog had very bad rheumatism symptoms and it was found that the diet, which contained fish oil, should have been supplemented with vitamin E. When the owner did add E to the diet the symptoms disappeared very quickly. -
My dog Mac was incontinent, if he had been asleep, then got up, we knew where he had walked by the little drips of wee on the floor. The vet I took him to said that the syrup she was giving him was for bitches but she has found it it did work on dogs in most cases. It is a most-wonderful medicine...it's called Propalin. Mac (8kg Westie) gets 1/4 ml morning and night mixed with his meals. A 30ml bottle lasts him around 2 months and costs $34-$36 (can't quite remember) The bottle has its own syringe-measurer that sits in a sleeve in the bottle so it is easy to dispense. The vets that I go to are: Koala Park Veterinary Surgery, 535 Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd, Victoria Point, ph 32076041 They have a tall fence and trees out the front but they put a sandwich-board on the verge with 'Vet Open' written on it. The vet to ask for is Jo (she and her husband own it) Hope this helps

V.i.p. Natures Goodness Grainfree Dryfood
Boronia replied to Frenchfry's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Mine are raw eaters as well, but, if I have been slack and forgotten to defrost their minced turkey necks they get taste of the Wild, they chomp it down really fast...it is their take-away We caught three marine cat-fish and had them for tea the other night...enormous thick fillets, grilled with bread crumbs, the dogs had one each, they thought they were a bit of ok. -
Neat little dog you have there WM! Go Oliver! ❤

Yep, charcoal is great, I use it for tummy upsets. For the Westies I give 1/2 tablet morning and night. You can buy charcoal tablets at chemists for about $8--$12. Westie tummy-troubles are usually caused by the concerted efforts of three dogs in removing the little sliding doors on the compost bin and eating the goodies inside.

There are Yorkies and Registered Bulldog pup for $200 on an Aussie auction site, I have reported it but so far nothing has happened, last week the same site had Westies and Pugs for sale at the same price...I reported...now gone

Good Stuff Blacktown Pound! What is puzzling me though is why PR are upset about the new policy, I can't see why it can affect their present arrangements in finding homes for the dogs, unless of course, that there are less dogs to find homes for = less funds coming in. Surely they can now advertise that the dogs have been tested, therefore are more likely to find homes quickly which would bring funds to their organisation? much faster.

It was as you all thought...she was having a roll in the mud  Lazarus-like revival of Tika, the 'dead dog', gets hosed down by owner Vivien MacBeth by: Andrew MacDonald WENT VIRAL: Far from being dead, Tika was just enjoying a roll in the mud. Picture: Jamie Hanson Source: The Courier-Mail MEET Tika the indestructible mud dog. The 14-year-old staffy and her owner Vivien MacBeth became the unlikely subjects of a southeast Queensland search last week, when Somerset Regional Council launched a public appeal to identify a plucky pooch featured in a series of photos from the 2011 floods. The images show a muddy, bloated dog lying still in a field before a hosedown from a woman brings it "back to life". Keen to include the snaps in a book commemorating the post-disaster clean-up, the council called for the dog's owner to come forward. Bemused Esk resident Ms MacBeth confirmed it was her beloved pet in the photos, taken by an SES volunteer friend. She said far from being at death's door, Tika had been enjoying a stretch and roll after a romp in the mud. "That's just her normal behaviour, I'm afraid," she said. "She must have been a warthog in another life because if we can find a pond or a creek ... she has a bit of a swim." Ms MacBeth said it was hardly Tika's first misadventure, with the hardy animal having previously survived a jump from a fast-moving truck, being run over, a near drowning and a fish spine through the foot. "She just keeps going," she said. A series of images released by Somerset Regional Council showed what appeared to be a bloated, muddy and lifeless staffy-cross lying in a field, before it miraculously came back to life. Not so, says the owner. Ms MacBeth said she had no idea the images had been sent to council and was stunned at the fuss. "It's amazing really because it's gone all over the bloody countryside," she said. "I just want everybody to know she's safe and well, alive and kicking, and spoilt rotten."
