Hi Nelsona, my old Westie had urinary incontinence, the vet put him on Propalin which worked for a few months but then he started again (though not nearly as bad as when he first had it), I had read that Westiemum had her lovely Mac on Propalin as well as Stylboestrol so asked the vet if we could try that combination to see if it would work. Well it did My Mac now has no pee-staining on his skirt or tummy and is so much happier. I am happier also as I was getting tired of washing the towels I use to cover his plastic-covered bed. There are also some positive reports on using corn silk, I haven't used it but maybe do a Google search and give it a go. I realise that this is not solving the poo-problem but it's half-way there.

I bought three lovely clean thick sheepskins at another garage sale yesterday (it was a good day for garage sales but unfortunately no big food processors for dog-slops), when I got home I placed the one on top of each other on the floor, went to make a cup of tea, came back and saw Penny climbing on top of them all. 'O good' I thought, she likes them then she wee-d all over them

I know. I think Ernie might get another Kong Knot bear. He does rip it eventually but he loves them so. And a squeaker mat and a stuffing less raccoon that he can flap about. He does love flapping. :D A friend of mine found that dust masks like this one make good dog flap-about toys  I bought this at a garage sale today for $20, it was still in the box. We assembled it and it looks a bit flash and OTT. I don't know if I really like it

This was posted on my facebook page this morning. If anyone finds ticks on people or pets can you please send them (the tick) to Sydney Uni. Keep it in a zip lock bag and place in the freezer till you can post it. (If freezing you can place a moist cottonwool ball in the bag too). Write on the bag where the tick was found (town and state) and on (person or animal) and the date/time : the more details they have the better research will be. We are looking for as many ticks as possible to determine whether there is a borrellia species native to Australia and all ticks are welcome. Send it to: Ann Mitrovic Tick Borne Disease Research Unit The University of Sydney Room 294 Blackburn Building D06 The University of Sydney. NSW. 2006

I saw this and thought I'd pop it here rather that the transport section (I'll move it if there are any objections) :) maybe someone can help. http://www.gympietim...isbane/2860841/ Blind dog tries to hitch a ride to Brisbane 2nd Dec 2015 3:59 PM HE'S not the usual type you might car pool with. Meet Kingston, a 'distinguished gentleman' who was rescued from the Mackay pound a few weeks ago in 'shocking condition'. "He had a tumour removed from his eye lid and also his testicle," said Jess Saunders from Animal Rescue Queensland in Mackay. "We guess he's a poodle cross about 12 years old." Despite his hardships, Kingston has a chance to restore his sight but needs to travel from Mackay to Brisbane to see a specialist. The animal rescue are reluctant to book Kingston in with a transport company because he gets anxious, instead they are calling out for anyone making the 10 hour car trip soon to come forward if they have a spare seat and a big heart. Photos View Photo Gallery "It would be great if he could possibly have someone to sit with on the back seat. "If we could get him down in the next couple of weeks so he can be assessed before Christmas, that would be amazing. "He has already had a big transformation since being rescued and to give him back some sight would be really special." **Transport Request**Our handsome older gentleman Kingston might have an opportunity of sight, but he needs to see a... Andy Is Unwell And No-One Seems To Know Why...
Boronia replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
This article was in the ABC Health and Wellbeing site a while back. There is a message board in the link http://www.abc.net.a.../21/2797762.htm Q: Can raspberry cordial kill stomach bugs in contaminated water? A: Yes. Raspberry and blackcurrant cordials can kill bacteria that cause some stomach bugs. Our expert: Dr Heather Cavanagh Published 21/01/2010 For most of us, cordial is off the shopping list; we avoid it because it's full of sugar, bad for our teeth and some of its artificial colourings can make some kids hyperactive. But raspberry cordial has some very loyal fans, who don't necessarily enjoy its sweet taste. These people keep it in the pantry because they swear it can prevent – and possibly treat – stomach bugs. And they may be right, says microbiologist Dr Heather Cavanagh, whose research found some raspberry juice and blackcurrant juice cordials can kill at least 12 different types of nasty bacteria responsible for stomach bugs, including E. Coli and several strains of salmonella. Cavanagh first became interested in the use of raspberry cordial as a preventative and treatment of stomach bugs when she heard that some farmers in parts of New South Wales and Victoria were adding raspberry cordial to their livestock's drinking water to treat diarrhoea. She also began to hear stories of other people using raspberry cordial to treat stomach bugs: "I heard anecdotal reports from as far away as Queensland and Western Australia, I heard of how people used it to treat themselves and their family. Not just their animals". So she decided to see if there was any science to support these anecdotal reports. Antibacterial properties In the lab, Cavanagh tested juice made from a number of fresh berries – including raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, cranberries, mulberries, loganberries and boysenberries – as well as commercially available cordials made from these berries (these cordials were made with real berry juice, not apple juice and artificial colours as is sometimes the case). These juices and cordials were then diluted down with water to different strengths, the strongest was one part water to five parts cordial and the weakest was 1:100. Then each type of bacteria was mixed with each of the berry drinks. The researchers found a number of the raspberry and blackcurrant juice cordials killed most of the bacteria. And while there has been some speculation that it's the sugar content of cordials that kills bacteria, Cavanagh says there is something unique to raspberry and blackcurrant juices, which seems to be responsible. Those cordials that had the best antibacterial properties contained at least 35 per cent raspberry or blackcurrant juice, and worked when diluted down to one part cordial in 10 parts water. Undiluted raspberry juice and blackcurrant juice worked just as well as the cordials. No human tests But, Cavanagh says, there's a hitch. While her research suggests there's some truth to the red cordial story, there haven't been any clinical trials testing whether raspberry cordial can prevent or treat stomach bugs in humans or animals. "We know for certain that adding the right amount of these cordials to water will reduce the number of bacteria in the water," she says. "[but] we cannot say for certain that the cordial will definitely prevent stomach bugs in people, and we don't know yet if it will help as a treatment if you are already feeling sick. Although again there is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that it might." And even if red cordial does work, stomach bugs (gastroenteritis) are caused by a range of things other than bacteria – such as viruses, parasites, and certain medications – and raspberry cordial won't help in these cases. Also be careful about drinking too much cordial (even diluted at a 1:10 ratio) if you have vomiting or diarrhoea. Drinks with a high sugar content – such as undiluted soft drinks, sports drinks, juices or strong cordials – can promote fluid loss into the bowel and worsen dehydration, which is a risk for anyone with vomiting and diarrhoea. Dr Heather Cavanagh is a senior lecturer in microbiology at the School of Biomedical Sciences at Charles Sturt University. She spoke to Claudine Ryan. -

I couldn't find out how it works either Dobermanic so I emailed her (Kay) and asked that very question, here is her reply: Thank you for your message. The coats are used wet just wet them down under a tap/bucket etc and wring out slightly so not dripping. Place over puppy and secure. The coats work via Evaporation they are used wet but do not wet the fur. No need to refrigerate but you can keep them in a zip lock bag between uses during summer if you do not wish to dry them (personally I dry them between uses) They last 4-6 hours depending on how windy the day is. I sure-will update on how the dogs enjoy them (or not)
