Welcome back Jed! So lovely to see you posting. I'm so sorry for all you have lost, and I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery. *Hugs* -
Name: Kimark Xbri Alnair ~ Dakota Nickname: Puppina, Doofus, Princess, Puppy, Pupsicle Breed: Samoyed Gender: Bitch - desexed Age: 2 years, 7 months Picture: Where did you get them from? Registered breeder, Victoria How often do you exercise your dog? Every day, but not always walking, a lot of play at home Do they know any commands? Sit, drop, stay, back (moves in reverse), shake hands, then 'shake other hand' (she swaps), off, up, run, out, bed, knows most of her toys by name, knows us as 'mummy' and 'daddy' Compete in any dog sports? No, but I keep saying I'd love to do proper obedience and then agility with her, just never get off my bum and do anything about it... Favourite treat: probably cheese, but of course she doesn't get it too often Favourite toy: At the moment, it's an Ostrich Funny habits or quirks: Burping at awkward moments, gently placing treats on the floor and sniffing/licking them before eating, sniffing other dogs eyes? is this normal? lol What's their personality like? Dakota is a very happy girl, quite content doing her own thing as long as she can 'access' her humans at will, hehe, although she does have cuddly moments too. She's always up for a play with a favourite toy, loves every person she meets, especially kids. Do they get along well with other dogs? Loves other dogs, if anything she is TOO excited around them. Are they scared of anything? Has always been a little bit jumpy, but nothing major until our most recent New Year celebration when she developed a fear of loud cracking sounds, thanks to fire crackers, so now, all of a sudden thunderstorms are a bit stressful. Lucky we have a very safe and secure yard and plan on spending every N.Y.E with her anyway. What training methods do you use? Positive reinforcement? Corrections? Mostly positive reinforcement, but I can't say I've put a lot of effort into any training at all in the last year ;) I really should get back on it!

Ready To Welcome A Puppy Into The Home Too!
pip1981 replied to Lynlovesdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh, I wish I was in NSW at times like this...lol Good luck with your research and meeting examples of the breeds, the process should be fun in itself, let alone actually getting one of your own! I don't have a lot of experience with Lappies, I have only spent time with Lappiemum's Bear, Tasha and Sohvi, and Evolving's Echo. They all have delightful personalities, very energetic and playful, somewhat cheeky. I don't know that I could say any of them are overly smoochy, but when I see them we are surrounded by up to 20 dogs, so it probably doesn't count. They are great with other dogs, not shy of strangers, gentle with children. I don't recall them barking a lot. I can't speak of Keesies, as I've never really spent any time with them. I live with a female Sammie who is very excitable, happy, cuddly at home, friendly to all people and dogs she meets, loves children. She only weighs about 17kg, which I imagine is very similar to a female Lappie? She is beginning to fill out a little now, but I imagine she'll never weigh much more than 20kg. She doesn't get walked everyday, but she certainly knows how to amuse herself around the house and works off a lot of energy that way. She rarely barks at home, although when out and about, if she gets excited enough, she will bark. I have spent a fair bit of time with her dam and litter sister, and they adore everyone's affection, they would sit by you all day for cuddles and pats. I've met quite a few others now as well, and as WS mentioned the only ones I've met that weren't your typical friendly happy Sams, were unfortunately in rescue and hadn't led the best lives. However, that's not to say they would all be like that. Anyway, that is all I can think of for now...all the best -
Hi, I have no advice on breeds I'm afraid, except, don't get a Samoyed if you want a breed that doesn't shed...lol. Just wanted to say that I think any dog that comes to live with you, be it a puppy or an adult rescue, will be very lucky. You're already doing more research than most, and you sound very responsible and very keen to do your absolute best. I wish you the best of luck in finding your perfect match!

We have constant shedding here, but also full loss of undercoat about twice a year. I've posted this pic on DOL before, but it's funny! Dakota and her 'new friend' and a more recent effort...

I'm very sorry you lost your boy, I hope he had a nice 11th birthday party at the bridge!

So sorry for your loss MonElite...he was lovely

I liked a lot of what I read about Sammies, but because my OH and I plan on eventually starting a human family, we focused on attributes that suited a family environment. Samoyeds have a very long history of being considered part of their human family, even sleeping indoors specifically to keep the children/babies warm at night. This alone, could have sold them to me! But, I also love that they are intelligent, fluffy and warm, affectionate, playful into old age, sociable and, well, absolutely gorgeous to look at!

These pics are just lovely!! Thanks for sharing..and enjoy your little Nandi!

Where Does Your Dog/s Ride In The Car ?
pip1981 replied to mrs tornsocks's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dakota travels in the back of my station wagon, behind a cargo barrier. She wears a harness and is clipped via a short lead to the middle of the barrier, she can move enough to choose whether to lie, sit or stand. I like the sound of the rear cargo barrier some posters have mentioned, for security when stationary I guess, but what kind of access do they have? Do you have to completely remove it to access the dog, or is there a gate/door of some kind? -
One Of My Worst Nightmares Has Happened.
pip1981 replied to baifra's topic in General Dog Discussion
Baifra, I'm so sorry to hear of your family's painful loss. I couldn't see through the tears to reply earlier, so I've returned now to reply. It brought back memories of a close call while we were away on our honeymoon, but we were luckier, I can't imagine how sad you must feel. Please listen to everybody and don't blame yourself. -

I'm so sorry MissyPriss, it's one of the hardest things I've ever had to too, and I know if/when my current girl's time comes, it will be even harder. I can't offer much advice, except to give yourself time to cry, you are allowed to be as upset as you feel, for as long as you need...and the only thing that heals the pain is time itself. I gave my family dog Jelly her wings about 6 years ago, it was a terrible day, but I had to pick myself back up, go to work, see people, etc. Eventually, you get too busy to think about it all the time, and that helps... Try and focus on your good times together, even if they make you sad. All the best

Wow! I'm a bit late, but just wanted to say that Emmy is absolutely beautiful, and it sounds like she and Charlie have a lovely relationship already! I'm so happy for you! p.s I'm not biased about white fluffy spitz breeds AT ALL p.p.s Welcome to the Spitz thread too, I missed that!

I drove over to Wonga Park this morning to participate in this study. As someone else already said, Tammie conducts herself very professionally, and is very nice about everything. Dakota was fairly indifferent towards the stranger, spending most of her time sniffing around and whining. When I left the testing area, she spent a lot of time near the door waiting for me, whereas I thought she might seek affection from the stranger. She wasn't afraid of the stranger, just more interested in what I was doing. Tammie is still looking for more volunteers to participate, so If you're in Melbourne and willing to travel to Wonga Park, please feel free to contact her at [email protected]
