  1. After 14 days of being impounded, a microchipped dog becomes the property of the Council, in NSW, so that's why they are saying you have no claim. If I was you I would be making a lot of waves and I would suggest you contact your local Councillor to see if they can help. Be persistent!
  2. How far south? I stayed in a nice self contained place at Tuross Head last month.
  3. I ran into a couple at a dog show that put their dog (with separation anxiety) in the car, in the garage, when they went out (they had 2 cars). She immediately went to sleep and was still there when they came home!
  4. I'd love a Japanese Chin - lucky you! And, of course, you can't talk about a puppy without posting a photo! Good luck with his pasterns.
  5. My vote would be for a Havanese as well. Delightful little dogs and don't seem to have any health problems. I have met quite a few Maltese with Cushings in the last few years.
  6. This came up in my feed yesterday. The photos are eye opening for us townies.
  7. I agree with Diva, Cavs are smart dogs and need mental stimulation as well as exercise. I've taught my girl how to fetch and then keep upping the game, eg, first of all she had to drop it at my feet, then we worked on siting calmly before I would throw it and now she has to make eye contact before I will throw it. There are lots of 'brain games' and tricks online. I also find that mental stimulation is more tiring than the physical. Also, one month isn't a long time for a dog to settle. Good luck and you sound like a great dog owner.
  8. You could try crate training him and having him sleep where he can see humans, or feels not so shut away. What sort of mental and physical exercise does he get?
  9. You were very lucky to have a vet that could do the surgery for you. I'm going through a similar thing at the moment with an old cat and all the local vets don't feel experienced enough to do it. One of the downers of living in regional areas.
  10. 14 is a great age for a Cav and some do live until they are 16. If he is deaf, then he will jump at your touch as he doesn't know you're there. As you approach him, bang on the floor or wall so that he can feel that you're approaching by the vibrations. And with deaf dogs, you need to touch them gently until they realise you are there.
  11. My experience with eye ulcers tells me that if it is a surface scratch it will heal within 5 days If it is something deeper and the wound becomes like a crater, then a grid keratectomy is required. When my cats have had the grid keratectomy their eyes have healed very quickly. I hope it's the same for your pooch.
  12. There is a lot of info on the net about brain games for dogs at the moment. Because it's so hot outside here, we have been doing some of them and that is keeping my active little dog very happy.
  13. Is he a purebred Poodle or could he be a Cav x Poodle? The reason I ask is that Cavaliers can get 'fly catchers syndrome' and I guess other breeds could too. A bit of info here: https://www.cavalierhealth.org/flycatchers.htm
  14. I have no advice but would recommend you get in touch with her breeder, if you haven't already. They may have come across this before and have some advice for you.
  15. The first thing I would be doing is booking her into a good puppy pre-school. And also, be careful taking her out for walks until after she is fully vaccinated - have a chat to your vet about it. I did take my pup out for socialising when she wasn't fully vaccinated but we went to places where dogs didn't frequent so the risk was minimal. There is a lot known about dog behaviour now than there was a few years ago and perhaps she is going through a fear period (I can't remember the ages). Have a look through this website, read the articles and check out his blog. http://k9pro.com.au/
  16. Adult Cavs do seem to be the same price as a pup, and some times even more. You have to consider also, that an 8 week old pup still requires two more vaccinations and desexing and I imagine that is included in the price of the young dog you're interested in.
  17. Most dog rescue has moved over to Facebook. There are a few working dog rescues that might be able to help. I don't have links but Google will help. Hopefully he will find the right home.
  18. I used Nexgard for my pup, without any problems, but am considering switching to the Seresto collar after the latest info released on Bravecto and Nexgard.
  19. They look to have whiskers growing out of them! Whereabouts on the face were they?
  20. Hey, photos or it never happened!
  21. I've been researching the pet flap panels for sliding doors and none of them are microchip activated that I have found. Also, a smart cat will just run out between the dog's legs!
  22. Give the dogs a cue word when they wee (and treats) - makes it all so much easier if they will wee on command.
  23. If you have a cat rescue nearby they could use them to hand feed kittens.
  24. I've found that the dogs are much easier to handle so haven't required sedation. However, I have used sedation with some of my cats that were stressed so difficult to handle.
  25. It's happening in the Shoalhaven as well. Council is building a much needed new shelter and the RSPCA will not be tendering to run it, as they do currently with the old one. The employees have been offered jobs but it means they will have to relocate, or take up a redundancy that has been offered. Sounds like it is going to happen everywhere.
