  1. We havent seen the sun here in Townsville for about a week! Its pooey rainy days with below average temps, not like the poor folks down south, so i dont think that is the cause unfortunately...... Could be scared of something, although i think this is unlikely she isnt normally a timid or easily frightened dog, well not when she is awake anyway. I suppose it is a bladder weakness, it is just strange that it happens once in a while. Can it be likened to that of a young child who wets their bed on and off?
  2. Our female Cavalier pup is 4mths old. We have crated her at night from day one (we got her at 10weeks). Our routine is toilet before bed (bedtime usually 10.30-11.30pm) then she will sleep until 6-7am when she will yap/bark for us to let her out, then she will always do number 1 and 2's first thing in the morning. Her crate is sectioned off and she sleeps on a snooza futon and has a teddy with her. In the last month she has wet her bed twice (not on consecutive nights). On these occassions she has woken us up alot earlier (around 4am) and her call-out is alot louder and more consistent. We go in to discover her bed is soaked and she is either standing up or has her front paws perched on the crate door. We never reprimand her for this, just take her down to do wee's then back to bed (another spare portable crate). Any possible explanations for this? Is it normal behaviour? Will she grow out of it? Could it be something more sinister? Opinions and advice very welcomed!
  3. On the same topic - my Cav pup is 13weeks old, she has had two shots, last one being at 12weeks. My breeder has advised against giving the 16week shot because she has had a pup who reacted badly (ended up dying) and is consequently very put off. On the other hand the vet is pro-vaccinating, either for the money or for the wellbeing of the dog. The 16week shot covers kennel cough and is given as a nasal spray. I dont intend on ever kennelling her, but i want to feel safe taking her to the beach, parks, etc. Im at a bit of a loss as to what i should do......
  4. Hello Seashell - i have a blenhiem cav pup too. She is 11weeks old and we have had her a week and a half. I dont have many suggestions - i think you have been given PLENTY of great advice from others, but i will share my experience so far......We used a crate from day one. We moved into the spare room and moved her crate in with us. She has had about one or two "bad" nights - meaning she took 10-15mins to settle, would wake up 3 or 4 times a night. We discovered the aircon helps her sleep (we live in Nth QLD), she now sleeps the whole night (from 10.30 to 6-7am) and will cry to toilet in the morning and sometimes once in the night but this hasnt happened for about 4nights now. I sectioned off the crate with cardboard, which she hasnt chewed through yet. We have since moved her crate in the study next door and we are still in the spare room, our next move is back to our bedroom down the hall. She has her futon and teddy in there, we closed the door from day one. She deosnt sleep in there during the day though, she prefers her bed in the loungeroom and that is okay because we are watching her, so im not going to make her sleep in there during the day. She has taken herself to the crate a few times, but i think that is just to get teddy out!! In the future i hope that she will take herself to bed because at the moment we wait for her to fall asleep and we carry her in there and she just plonks down straight away. We make sure we go to bed at roughly the same time each night though so hopefully she gets into a routine. We have a cover on her crate too, so it looks a bit more sheltered (i didnt like the wire look personally!) I have found it to be helpful in not having to worry about her getting up to mischief during the night. She is doing well with her toilet training, but we make sure we take her out regularly anyway. I wish you all the best with your new pup and with crate training. Stick in there with the crying too! I attached a pic of my crate setup and of my pup!!

She LOVES the chicken necks the most. Shes pretty keen on the biscuits too. Becomes more picky with the mince/vege. I will definately make her servings smaller a nd remove after 15-20mins. The breeder was giving veges, not sure about pasta, she sort of said she throws in whatever (eggs, sardines, yoghurt, cheese, etc). I will try your suggestions and see how we go. Thanks

Yes and no. The mince and vege mix, and necks and bones the breeder was giving her too, but of course the mix is going to be slightly different. The dry food brand is different though but she has no problem with the dry food gobbles that up.

    Eating Habits

Ok thanks for that. I was worried she was getting too much.....Another thing, on the dry food packet it has the chart as a guide of what to feed, now im assuming that this guide is accurate provided you are feeing ONLY dry biscuits in the day, correct? So, if i am feeding only biscuits in the morning, what portion of the daily amount should i give? One third? Also, do you recommend i cut out the lunch meal?
  9. I have a 10week old CKCS. She has been with us since Friday. Each meal time, she tends to eat very slowly and sort of pick at the food, come back to it later, and finish it over a period of time. I dont want to get her into poor habits, and i know you are supposed to remove their bowl if they dont eat straight away (yes/no?) but i would rather her eat than not at all, even if she tends to graze rather than gobble! At the moment she has biscuits in the morning (royal canin), a couple of chicken necks for lunch, and mince mixed with veges (maybe rice, pasta, cheese, yoghurt) for dinner. Should i be concerned? Should i stick with what im feeding? Should i remove her bowl if she walks away from it after having a few nibbles? My concern is creating bad habits and/or a fussy eater. Thank you
  10. Thanks for that. Your opinion is appreciated. I have no idea what makes a good dry dog food....i know with my own food i go for less ingredients the better, but i guess that isnt the case with kibble. I will use my free bag of Advance that comes with the pup, and also get some Royal Canin because that seems the best. But yeah i agree, trial and error, wait and see!
  11. Hi everyone. I am in the middle of deciding which dry food i want to give my pup and must say i have found all the posts about this topic on DOL very helpful! Anyway, at my local pet food supplier today i discovered a new brand i had not heard of or heard mentioned on here. The company is Petco and the brand is Enduro. Basically it is several different ranges of dog biscuits (covering puppy, weight, adult, active, etc). Its Aus made and owned (which ticked some boxes for me) but i dont know much else about it. One thing that has put me off is for the puppy formula the first (and therefore main?) ingredient is Wholegrain Sorghum (a type of grain) which from what ive read is not good?!?. I will post the entire ingredient list for the puppy formula: Wholegrain sorghum, kangaroo meat and roo by products, wholegrain wheat, poultry and poultry by products, vegies and vegie by products, prime tallow, chicken digest, sodium chloride, polyunsaturated canola oil, essential vitamins and minerals premix, tocopherols (natural antioxidant vitamin E) I dont know what half these ingredients actually are (prime tallow?) so i would really appreciate anyone who has more knowledge in this area to please share their opinion of the makeup of this food. They also have a sensitve range with no grains. Thanks in advance PS - im not feeding solely dry food, i am doing raw too (seperately)
  12. Yep we use the natural hard set one with the acidopoulous in it, you can get if from Coles/Safeway. You can also freeze it inside the kong as a treat for hot days as well Bully your dog is spoilt Mine are outside while I type this as I don't want them getting any ideas ;) Does anyone know if it is safe to use yoghurt made from one of those Easy-Yo yoghurt makers? Id assume so but it makes that really tangy greek style yoghurt. Easi Yo is absolutely safe and is advocated by quite a few on DOL, myself included. It has a higher proportion of live cultures than supermarket yoghurt as it is fresh and the cultures have a limited life span. Some yoghurts may be relatively 'old' by the time you buy them off the shelf. Lots of flavours available so if your dog doesn't like tangy a straight vanilla is a good option. Thank you!!
