  1. Me again Hi Di - they are about 1 year difference. The reason why I have kept them separated is that Mumble (the brother) tends to have an aggression problem with high value food. At first when we brought Annie home, all he did was growl and snap at her when she got close or wanted a snuggle from him. That is why I didn't want to force him into an environment that he wasn't familiar with. Over the months, he is much better with her. They have their lil play times and time apart. What I am starting to do is leave them together in her play pen for an hour or two to see how they go and so they get use to each other. There are still a few growls here and there when she doesn't know when to back off, but it's getting better Sas - don't worry, i've spied on her and when she tries to jump 70 cm, it's not a straight jump down. There are boxes on the other side to help her get down. If she jumps i rather her jump down safely. Will be posting the photos of her current play pen area for those who are confused
  2. It takes less than 10 seconds to assemble or disassemble a Ccrate Securapen. I'll confess to being a tad confused as to how the other dog gets in and out if the pen blocks your access. Long term, I suggest you install a dog door. LOL - I think everyone who is reading this post is thinking what type of setup I have for these dogs and I must be some weirdo Owner (which i don't blame). I think I will post some pic tonight to show everyone their current setup (if i can figure how to upload more than one photo). We do have dog door installed, the reason why she isn't using it yet, is that it was too high for her when we first got her. But being that there is two dogs (one on each side) I can't split that dog door in half either. Stay tune for the photo's to come
  3. Hi PPS- if you read all my other replies, both dogs have access to inside and outside, so they are free to absorb the sunlight whenever they like during the times I am not home. I would never dream of keeping both dogs inside for a long period of time. And when I come home from work and on weekends, they are both inside the house with me While I am asleep they are both crated. Poodle Proud - I've read about the compost cages from bunnings, which is why I will go and have a look. Hopefully that will work and I can always buy those metal hinges to secure it down. I think cable ties, she will try and chew through. If the compost cage isn't suitable, then I will find some sort of mesh that Pebbles posted above from deals direct and secure it like that. The only reason why I can not purchase a whole new cage with the secure lid is that where both dogs are living, it is the only access we have to our backyard and their area, therefore the lid needs to be removable with ease so we can go in and out as we please. I'll post some pics once I have found the right solution and it is working Once again thanks for everyone's advice.
  4. Yes I know, I'm not ignoring what you are all saying.. it's finding the suitable solution, whether that is online or at the stores. I plan to go to Bunnings after work to see what secure mesh they have so I can use as a lid for the time being. He is a Maltese X so he is not a big size dog. I think in a few months she will roughly be the same size as him.
  5. Awww she looks adorable At first when we only had the pen up, she was climbing them - one foot on the bar then the other. Since reinforcing that with weed mat and big boxes on the other side, she just jumps up to see whatever she can get hold off to allow her to climb over. I got to applaud her for her determination I know where she can jump out from, it is where the two corners meet that makes a 90 degree angle. For the time being, I have also place large cardboard boxes and taped it down so that there is nothing helping her jump over the pen. I plan to put them two dogs together after she has been desexed. My only fear is that once the two dogs are together, she will still jump her pen if there are no cardboard boxes or lids are in place. , but time will tell.
  6. Hi Pebble's, thanks for that, that looks perfect as it seems as I can remove the top with ease. Persephone - We do have a secure yard that is also sectioned off for both dogs. We split the play pen inside and outside in half, so during the day they cannot play with each other unsupervised. Both dogs have access to inside and out throughout the day when I am not home.
  7. Cavaliers were bred to be companion dogs and do best with company. Evening all Don't get me wrong, my CKC isn't going to be alone forever. I didn't want to put her with her brother straight away and force him into a situation he was not use to or didn't like. God knows what can go wrong leaving them both alone together. This is the first time I've had two puppies at the same time, so I am (well I think I am) being a responsible Owner and supervising them before I make the big jump and put them in a play pen for 8 hour straight. So far I have re-enforce her play pen and she hasn't jumped out yet, until I order/find a pen with a lid. Maybe I should have taken some pictures of her area to give you all an idea of her current setup and why it's harder to get a straight square pen with a lid.
  8. I believe my pen is secure in away that if she does jump out, her leg cannot get caught on anything. I've placed weed mat along the pen, so her foot cannot get stuck between the bars. The large cardboard pieces are up against the pen and secured by heavy boxes. So if by chance they fall on top of her, it's won't hurt her. If she manages to jump out (as she has been), there are boxes for her to safely get down then from a straight jump. I am now in the process of finding a new pen with a removable lid. Can anyone recommend a good place/website? Once again, thanks for your advices.
  9. Her brother is 1.5 years old and is Maltese X. I do not feel comfortable leaving them along together for 8 hours when she is still small. She tends to be in his face which he doesn't like, so at the moment, they are supervise when they are together. Don't worry, they will eventually be in the pen together, however I plan to do this when I am on my next annual leave and can spy on them from afar so I know they are both safe. In her pen, she has access to the backyard with plenty of room to run around or even laze in the sun. In her pen area, she has a bedding and toys to play with. So I am not sure why she LOVES jumping out into the rumpus room, when there is no toy or no access to water or backyard. Yes I know that 8-9 hours is a long time to leave a puppy, but what can I do when one has to work a 9-5 job I guess my only solution is to make the pen higher and keep discouraging her from jumping...a lot of spying on the weekends for me Thanks for everyone's advice.
  10. Her crate is outside our bedroom and I am a light sleeper so I can hear her when she wakes up. She doesn't bark or scratches when she needs to go. During the day, she is penned inside, however she has access to the garden to do her business. Lately, she's been very good and I do not see any pee in her pen area.
  11. She has a crate which we use at night for her to sleep in. She is still a puppy so there is no way I will put her in a crate for 8-9 hours a day straight. What I really want to know is if they will grow out of this behavior or is it once a jumper always a jumper?
  12. Hello, Are CKC known for jumping a lot? I seem to have this problem where when I leave Annie in her pen area while I am out or at work, she has a habit of jumping out of her pen and into the rumpus room or in her brothers pen area. The pen is about 70cm high, she is now 4 months old. I have done everything from spying on her and saying "No" to using cardboard boxes to make it higher. She always seems to find a way out. She has been good for the last two weeks and today when I came home, I see her in the rumpus area, playing with the cords etc. I check to see where she has jumped out and I'd manage to get some more cardboard to block it, but I also so found a hole (guess she has figured out how to dig) in the backyard. She has food, water, towels and toys in her area. Is this a phase that will pass? I am a bit worried when we re-arrange the pen area so that both dogs are in the one area that she will still jump. When I am at home and I put her in her pen area, she doesn't jump, only seems to be when I am out. Is there anyway of stopping this behavior?
  13. Good afternoon Yes I did visit the breeders place and there was a bedding on one side and some newspaper on the other end. Last night/this morning wasn't too bad, I woke up at 6am to see only one little pee mark... maybe left over pee? Thanks for the link
  14. Hi , sorry it's taken me awhile to reply. She went to the vet last night to get her last vac's and and overall check and nothing seems to be wrong. Her pee isn't offensive smelling. It use to be when we first got her, but we changed her diet and it seems to have improved the smell. Thankgod!. Since originally posting my thread, I have gone back into the routine of waking up at 3am and taking her to the toilet etc. She has been good up until this week. Monday woke up at 3 to find herself sleeping in her puddle of pee. Then the rest of the week, I woke up at 3am to take her to the toilet, which was good, but woke up at 6 am to find a pee mark the size of a twenty cent coin. ARGHHH.. I just hope i'm not endorsing any bad behavior and she is starting to think peeing in her crate is fine. Btw - where can i find the cav thread? Sorry, you can call me a bit new to these forums
  15. Morning, I have set my alarm to wake up three times a night - before we sleep, 3am and 6am regardless if it's a work day or a weekend. I got her from a breeder and from memory I believe she did mention that her litter would pee and poo on one side of their sleeping area. I guess I will continue doing what I am doing and hope she will soon learn. Thanks for the help, I guess I just wanted to be reassured that I wasn't doing anything wrong. Thanks
  16. Hi, I've finally come to the realization that all dogs are different and have different learning abilities I have a 3 month old cavy who is slowly getting the hang of doing her business outside. She still has accidents inside the house, but not as often as when we first got her... so patient and consistency is the key. The problem I am now facing is her peeing in her crate during the night. When I'd reduce her crate size to half the size, I've notice that she would wake up and pee on one side and curl up into a little ball on the other side and sleep. This happened for the first few nights so what I did was reduce the size even more so there is just enough room for her to sleep. I believe this worked as I made the effort to wake up twice a night to take her outside to go to the toilet. For the last two nights I gave her more room to move around, as she is getting a bit bigger, but both nights she peed in her crate even though I took her outside to pee. Any suggestions on how I can stop her from peeing in the crate ? She doesn't whimper or bark when she needs to go. Do I keep doing what I am doing and hope for the best? At what age can they hold in their pee? I read somewhere that it was roughly 13 weeks or so that they can hold their pee from night to morning. With our first dog, it only took about 2 weeks until he stopped having accidents in his crate and even now if he really needs to go, he would bark to get our attention. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  17. Don't worry, I'm not going to buy the collars yet, as I'm pretty sure it's because they are doing renovations and the neighbor is exaggerating, so they hope I will do something other than ignore them. When you say containment first in the house, I go to work from 8-6. Is he going to be OK in his area without access to the backyard to do his business? How do I find out WHY he is barking when I'm not home? I know he barks because of birds and people and strange noises, but when I am at home and he has access to the entire house and the backyard, he does not bark without a reason. This next question is going to sound stupid, but can he smell me if I am hiding in the house to see the cause of the barking? I am not keen on using any collars either, but if that is my last choice to make the neighbors happy, then I have no choice if all other options fail. It will be interesting to see what the other neighbors have said about my dog. Sorry about all these questions, but I am trying to be a responsible pet owner. :D
  18. My dog is about a year and half old. I guess as long as he stops barking throughout the day when we are not at home, then there is no reason's for the neighbors to complain. When we are home, he is fine. Maybe the occasional bark when strangers are on our streets or birds in the trees, but other than that, I haven't picked up on signs that he is a constant barker. Since his been a puppy, I've had him locked up in his area and I've stayed in the backroom for a few hours to see whether his being destructive or he constantly barks when I'm not around, but he was quiet as a mouse...maybe he could smell my scent and realized I'm still around. I've also been outside the house or coming back home during the day/night and I don't hear him barking either... So I find this complaint a bit odd, but then again I cannot ignore her complaint if I want all parties to be happy. What I might do is talk to the other neighbors to see if he is constantly barking and buy one of those collars and have it on him while they are doing their renovations. My main concern is that I don't want to inflict any harm on my dog with these collars. But if he doesn't constantly bark as I think he doesn't then there shouldn't be any problems.
  19. I have a Maltese x poodle. What does the innotec static bark collar do? I'm just in the middle of researching type of collars as I don't want to inflict any harm on him. I will try the treat toy, but knowing my dog, he rather lie on his bedding inside then play with his toy.
  20. Hi, I've had a complaint from my neighbor about my dog barking. She's advised that my dog would constantly be barking through out the day. I've asked her how long it's been going on for and she's pretty much said since we've gotten him. I find this very hard to believe, after all why would you wait a year to complain when they have had many opportunity to mention something. There have been several occasions where I have locked him in his area and gone to the back room, and i don't hear a peep. Been out the front of the house and no barking either. I think our dog is constantly barking because they are having renovations done to their house. But then again, I am not home through out the day to see whether this is the case, I can only take her words. I was speaking to a vet nurse and she advise for me to stimulate his environment and if that fails I should try the citronella anti bark collar. Has anyone ever used one and does it work? Does it harm the dogs in anyway? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
