  1. I will no longer walk around feeding the dogs in a g-string,thongs and singlet,i'm paranoid one of you guys may see it now via satellite or something  :D
  2. We DNA all puppies before they are sold - they must have a microchip or permanent id to have this as a formal record - so it is done - some did bleed a little and the needle looks so big against a baby but I don't think it hurt them anymore than it did getting our older purchased dogs done. Besides then I know that they are chipped and then get the new owners to fill in the paper work with all their details the day they pick up the puppy and then I send it in to the company to transfer details over to their names - they normally get it all back within 2 weeks and I know its all done. People forget to transfer over otherwise - I find this system works well for us.
  3. I wouldn't have thought that web info would really be reliable - considering that part of cyber bullying can be setting up false pages / facebook sites to spite people etc etc Perhaps you should do a search on your own name and see what comes up - shocking and interesting. I would much rather deal with people who will take the time to meet us and our dogs prior to the bitch even being mated and every single puppy prospect has either bought us photos of all prior dogs - their house etc etc or have invited us to inspect their home as well. The real world is where the dog will live and thats what I am interested in.
  4. Lucky me - I'm home for the week and my dogs have all been out for a swim at the dog pool and then a very quick run (more for mental release than anything) on the way home - they are now inside with the aircon on. The bush behind us was burnt out last Feb and the fire got to our back fence twice before Elvis got it under control (luv that chopper ) but still the trailer is primed with dog supplies - fully packed and ready to go. Our stuff is in the hall cupboard just in case. FYI - its 35 degrees at my house now - we are 10 mins from KCC Park and yes its in the shade .
  5. Wild dogs, wolves etc etc while carnivores - will eat the intestinal tract and organs of a kill first. Watch a dog if you ever see one catch a rabbit, kill and eat it - they are so very efficient and quick to show their primal origins. They will also eat the intestinal tract and organs - then skin the rabbit and then settle down to enjoy the carcass. So technically this means they will eat vegetation - through that of the kill they make if given the chance. On average this would make a natural diet for a canine 60 % bone, 30 % meat and 10% vegetation - the perfect Barf diet .
  6. I cook the chicken and rice together as well - they love it. No salt though !!! I do also use the water to get them drinking more. The scourban and injection would have been to bind him up - and it does ! Scourban would stop a tap from running I think Try mixing some plain yoghurt into the chicken and rice - this will rebalance the good working bacteria and line his tummy. I also use Charocaps (you can get them from the chemist) - they are charcoal capsules and mintec tabs (can get these from the supermarket or chemist). The charcoal absorbs toxins or whatever caused the upset in the first place (does make the droppings darker though so remember that and don't stress) and the mintec tabs sooth the stomach and gut lining which makes them feel like eating. You can also get Zeolite - which is pretty amazing in that it cleans out the system of all toxins. Just search it online - you will find a supplier. Hope he's feeling better soon and running around causing puppy trouble soon
  7. Bugger - I don't know any rehabs there - will try and find out for you. If he's little they could carry him out and then hold him under chest to support his front - some dogs are weight bearing in as little as 3 days but with both legs I'm not sure. The specialist will tell them whats probable. I would do the sling thing GM put above - it allows you to stand upright and not end up with a broken back by the end of it all . Depends on the surgery and how the dog copes with it but I would say that 3 days at vet would be expected - as I said they will tell them expected timeline. Get them to write down all the questions they have because you forget to ask when the emotions take over. Sending healing thoughts his way.
  8. Here guys - this facebook group will make you laugh. (there is rude language ) www.facebook.com/.../Robert-and-Brenda-Vale-can.../361279150283
  9. 1. Which state do they live in ?? 2. Which specialist ?? & what surgery ? I wouldn't worry about boredom - this is a major surgery and will take the dog at least 2 wks to recover. Pain killers will be in force for probably 7 days and then once the bandages are off and wounds totally healed you should get them to take him to a rehab centre to get the best use of his legs again. Dogs seem to cope really well in recumberance and adapt really quickly to whatever their situation is. Pain management and wound healing will take the better part of 2 weeks. Good luck to them and their little boy - if they are in Vic I can recommend a fabulous rehab.
  10. Jo at Aqua Paws in vic sells some great ones - they are made of suede - so they breath and dogs feet don't get really hot - they also don't come off which is a bonus . Search www.aquapaws.com.au
  11. I hope everything works out for you the way you want. I wouldn't use these injections due to the unknown as well - vets can only tell you the research data or the sales speel. I have known of bitches that were affected fertility wise by this - one permanently. But these things affect different girls in different ways - just like medications affect us differently.
  12. I'd say then its the injection having messed her up hormonally a bit. I would want a normal season before I would try and mate one of my girls if I'd had to use something like that.
  13. I haven't had this but they can have what is termed a 'silent season' for their first season - how old is she ??? The first season can be with no bleeding and technically they don't become fertile (or so a vet told me but I wouldn't risk anything) - it gets their bodies ready for full season. If she has had a normal season already I would get her checked for infection - though it doesn't sound like it. If she hasn't I would wait as it is more than likely a silent one.
  14. Picking up your dog is the worst thing you can do - you are making yourself a target as well, I know it is an instictive action to protect them but it is so dangerous. You are far better to put yourself in between the other dog and yours and yell - the bigger physically you can make yourself look the more dominant you will become to the other dog. If you are in the awful position of actually having your dog bitten the best thing to do is to pick the attacking dog up by the rear legs and lift them as high as you can and hold them there - this takes away all the power the dog has - the bite wounds are lessened and if it lets go you can keep it away from your dog. What you do after that if you are by yourself I don't know Having said this I got so sick of idiots and their dogs that I now drive my dogs to free run areas where I know there are not many dogs, plus they are well behaved and they have sensible owners. Examples of idiots in our area Years ago I had 3 of our dogs - yup 3 fully grown Dobermanns - running in an oval which was fully fenced and the gate locked. This idiot put his 2 small white fluffys in this area after walking past me and my dogs while I am standing on the other side of the oval thinking 'you are kidding me - right ?' and then had the balls to tell me that my dogs could be put down for attacking his dogs. Ofcourse they all ran over to the other dogs to check them out but they didn't attack them (though I think Khann did pee on one of them :D - ooops) - he said then that 'rushing' is the same as attacking. Well - he was the one that got attacked then - by me . Recently I had our young boy (2yrs) Ryder at an offlead park at a training session - we had finished and he was just trotting around while we packed up all the equipment. These two dogs came up - one an Am Staff X I think and the other a black schip. The Amstaff and Ryder went straight into play bows and started bouncing around together - he thought she was beautiful ;) - but the little shit was being dominant towards Ryder - Ryder looked sideways at this dog and just ignored it, it kept on pushing him - actually jumping up onto him and snapping, growling etc etc I asked the owners to put him on lead because of his behaviour and they said 'we don't mind if your dog bites him - he needs to be put in his place' - as she finished this sentence Ryder had come up right next to me to obviously get away from this little shit and then it decided that it would again jump up onto him and it bit at him - missed him only because I slapped him off with my hand. He came straight back at Ryder and so I jabbed him in the top of the head as hard as I could with my fingers and yelled at him to get out - little shit stood there with a stunned look on his face and took a step towards Ryder again so I threatened him with the same action and he decided retreat was his best option. I looked up to see his owners faces - stunned that I had hit their dog and the woman said 'You can't hit our dog - he's only little'. Good lord - did she / they get a serve - I told them that I asked them to get the dog away from my dog politely, I told them that they are stupid to let their dog act this way towards other dogs, I told them how dare they tell me I cannot hit their dog but say its ok if my dog bites him, I told them that they are damn lucky my dog isn't aggressive, I told them that my dog is a 40 kg male adult dobermann who would crush the body of their dog in one bite if he were provoked enough to attack, I told them that they have no right to put my dog in that position - no right to allow a situation that would potentially teach my dog to behave in this way, I told them that they don't deseve dogs if they let this kind of behaviour occur and god knows what else spewed out of my mouth . . . I am so lucky that my dogs are well socialised and have good temperaments - and I am so lucky that Ryder didn't / doesn't react to other dogs. But fact is that he is a 40 kg adult entire male dobermann who could kill this little dog with one bite and then in this situation who would have been to blame - yup . . . it would have all come back on me and my dog. So I have just removed my dogs from these situations because I am just so sick to death of idiots and it seems they just keep breeding more - can't wait to get our property.
  15. Happy Birthday Sexy Rexy - still as handsome as ever. Special kisses from his half sister Rhemy - who is now 7 1/2 and just starting to calm down - I always said she would 'grow up' when she was about 10 years old, so we have a way to go yet. B
  16. One of our girls had coat like this after she was baited. She had antifreeze detected in her system - she had ulcers in her stomach and had alot of issues digesting and absorbing her food for a long time - we were very lucky we didn't lose her but my point is that while we thank the vets for saving her life they certainly couldn't come up with anything to help her recover it wasn't until I found a fabulous natropath who tested her totally and gave us multiple drops and tablets - we went through retesting to see what her system needed every 4 to 6 weeks and modified what we were giving her as we went along. It took a good 12 months for her to fully recover and I still don't let her have any wheat products - and I never leave my dogs unattended or let anyone feed my dogs at shows either Get the vet tests done and once you know where you stand then tackle his system from the naturopath side. As you may well know the allergies will not be fixed via cortizone or antihistamines - they are useful to eleviate symptoms but really only mask the problem. PM me if you want this natropaths details - in Vic but can do hair analysis.
  17. Back Seat Buddy - OMG The Price - OMG WORTH EVERY CENT !!!!! - our is about to go onto its second car and still as great as ever - has never torn, snapped etc etc - no damage at all and we have Dobes who fly into the back seat. I had bought so many $40 ones and they were totally useless (and I reckon I spent the price of a BSB anyway !!!!!) - I ended up with ripped seats which had to be reupholstered - once that was done the BSB hasn't been out of there. My BSB has paid for itself time and time again - if I ever need to replace it I will not hesitate - though you can get everything repaired or replaced apparently . I generally do have a doona or quilt on the seat as well but that is because the dogs like to bunch up their bedding and curl up to sleep. Actually when I went to buy mine the sales girl stated with shock "that did I know they are $$$$$" - yes, I said I was well aware of the price and could she make sure it was the larger size - and then started to pull the $$ out of my purse. Very amusing.
  18. Ring Wayne at All Creatures - they have been in the transport business forever and take the greatest care with the animals - their safety record is the best in Australia. And they are in Victoria, will pick up and take to airport etc etc. Freecall 1800 441 133.
  19. Hmmm - also a subject of much debate, bitching and fighting in our breed. Dobes are the only breed developed as a guard dog - they should have a happy, confident, self assured, strong, watchful, alert and aloof temperament but they must also be pliable and willing to work for and with their owner/handler. In Aus we have what is called the ROM program to determine suitable breeding stock - they must complete 3 different parts to attain their ROM (Register Of Merit). These are their Australian Champion Title, Companion Dog Title and Working Aptitude Certification (Temperament Test). The ROM Committee and the National Dobermann Council of Australia see the ROM Program as our breeds future but it is not required to breed with an animal and I doubt that will ever be the case. Also the ROM, which is one of the most coverted and respected titles for a dobe to attain is not recognised by the ANKC. The issue we have is with people in our breed cracking it when their dogs don't pass the WAC (Temp Test) and then bagging the test or the assessor (judge) and then instead of taking the information they get about their dogs core temperament and modifying their breeding program to select a dog or bitch with a temperament that will improve on what they have - they just walk away and keep bagging the whole thing. In Germany dobes must have their Temp Test or they cannot attain their Champion title - so they must prove they have correct workability and temperament. I wish that dobes here had to have their WAC to attain CH Title - our breed would be in a much better place if that were the case. But I am part of a minority in our breed unfortunately. Working lines in Aus would never title in the showring. People are importing working lines to bring in bone, size and substance, coat colour and temperament (though not sure that this is a priority) but it seems to be several generations before they get consistent type and quality through this process. It is interesting to watch what different dogs produce - both in type and temperament. If a dog can genuinely improve on our breed in this country both in type and temperament he will be a very valuable animal but unfortuantely most seem to have very open pedigree's and they just cannot be expected to produce - hence the lack of consistency within litters. Our temperament test does test a dobermann's core temperament and they should be intelligent enough to assess all situations and act with confidence and security.
  20. I note your dog in the photo is brown/white - I gather this is the one you will be showing ??? For breeds that you need to run with and you will - it is a must to have shoes that lace up so that you don't slip in your shoes - I wear golf shoes with soft spikes and they are sometimes the only thing that keeps me from going aovert in the ring Good shoes a must. With a dark brown dog I like - creams, golds (subtle ones ), lighter browns, teamed with white to compliment your dog - they highlight the dog but blend you out of the picture a bit. Then a nice deep purple or greens also look really nice with a brown dog (I have 3 browns ). I agree with the others that have said to go to a few shows in the area you will be showing and watch your breed - note what the other people in your breed are generally wearing and dress accordingly. Good luck with your first show as well.
  21. Ahhhh - Thanks I needed a laugh We have multiple types now I think about it - and mine love their ceramic bowls like above they keep the water beautifully cool. 1. Nose on edge of bowl and then laps with tongue - gets most annoyed if he can't reach the water this way and won't drink until you fill it up enough - still manages to take about a litre of it across the kitchen floor with him when he's finished despite delicate drinking procedure. 2. Normal drinker - about the only thing this one does normally !! 3. Gulper - and loves to wipe excess on the couch and then gives you a very very innocent look when you sit in it . . . 3. Definately a snorkler - and she wags her tail while she does it. I sometimes give her iceblocks to chase around the bottom of the drinking bowl and she will stand there snorkling and wagging her tail until she catches it - then she sits and waits for another one - she will also blow bubbles to amuse herself and she thinks that she is pretty funny when she does this as she wags her tail while she does it - tail stops when she comes up for breath - funny girl. 4. Oh my drooler - sticks pretty much his whole head in bites the water inhaling at the same time - weirdo, must think he has to chew it or something. 6. Very feminine delicate drinker and never spills a drop or slops it anywhere - but she won't drink out of a bowl that 'someone' has drooled in - good lord no
  22. We can track the parvo virus in the house just by going to the shops to buy more newspapers and more bleach . I really only stress about it for the first week or so but then we have been fortunate to have easy whelping bitches, no issues with puppies and no sick pups. Show dogs wouldn't get shown for the first couple of weeks but thats because I sleep next to the box for the first week at least as with fast moving girls who tend to fly in and out of the box you need a wide sweeping arm to scoop puppies from under feet - and as such I don't enter shows when babies are due. Puppies should have enough immunity from mum by the end of the first week. However I do use bleach to clean the puppy areas and the dog areas once a week anyway.
  23. If there is any parvo in your area and I would check with your local vets to see what cases they have had in - strong bleach is the only thing that kills it. I use bleach in whelping area and delete as well. I use bleach in all the puppy washing as well. Everything is bleached in the whelping area prior to whelp date and no other dogs go in there once it has been done. We allow other dogs to see pups from the doorway (when mum is not there with our breed ofcourse) one they are past the first week but no contact until they are weaned. Puppies wil have immunity from mum so I don't stress about it too much as all our dogs are vaccinated. Parvo is the only thing I really worry about - after being a vet nurse and nursing sick parvo puppies and hearing of other breeders who have had litters wiped out by it - its bleach, bleach, bleach.
  24. We have been very lucky with our puppy people and have some now great friends through it all - but then I must admit I go from my gut feeling about someone from the second I speak to them and then if they get in to see the puppys and the bitch doesn't like them - well its all over then. Our first litter, our girl would bring toys to the people to give to the puppies and play with them and generally treat them like she does everyone but there was one family she didn't like at all - they didn't get a puppy .
  25. Passion - passion and more passion The joy of one of our 'puppies' turning themselves inside out when they see us again and yes their owners being amazed when they do. The joy of one of our 'puppies' nearly escaping from his families car when they turn into our street and then pulling them all the way to the front door. The joy of hearing the pride in one of our 'puppies' owners voices when they ring to tell us about him gaining his latest title. The joy of hearing the love in one of our 'puppies' owners voices when they ring to tell us just how great he is with the new baby and how much he adores their 2 yr old. I could go on and on - the joy sure outweighs the sorrows.
