  1. I was waiting for the catch, but it never came After reading that I think I'm going to trade my SBT for a Dobey...how much do ya think I would get on changeover Wotan, don't do that. Do what I do...have a SBT AND a Dobe! As long as they aren't the same sex, they get on wonderfully...and it's the best of both worlds! I couldn't be without either breed. Have you got your puppy you were looking for ??? Bisart Dobes... No, not yet. I went to 2 shows recently and met with a QLD breeder. Her bitch has such a wonderful temperament, and her bitch and I have formed a nice bond together. She is certainly something special. I am going to be patient and wait for a pup from her litter around September. Thanks for your emails, and best of luck with Rhemy. May she have a trouble-free pregnancy and healthy, happy fur-kids Thats great - I'm glad you found someone in the same state - it makes it a much nicer experience to be able to see the puppies through the process. At least you have the baby staffy to fill the void in the meantime - look forward to seeing posts of your baby dobe when you get it. And yes, Rhemy is very happy and content with herself at the moment . Bernadette
  2. So sorry to hear she hasn't been found - thoughts are with them.

  4. I believe it's more difficult to find good Dobes than it is to find good GSD's. Dobe's have had their share of compromised temperaments and fear aggression is not uncommon in some lines. From a working perspective, there are very few Dobe lines in Australia that possess working ability anymore. Don't always believe the "lack of socialisation" excuse for fear aggression in working breeds Nic.........most is usually a genetic fault that the breeders often blame on the owners Yes, unfortunately this is quite correct - but there are alot less Dobes than there are GSD's. There aren't alot of Dobe breeders who place correct temperament on their breeding checklist or even consider it a factor in choosing a dog for a bitch. There are also some lines with fear based aggression, insecurity, no self confidence - and in some lines this is now consolidating into both dog and people aggression which is extremely bad for our breed. And yes it does come from genetics and the core temperament of the dog - which they will always revert back to in times of stress. Then there are those dogs that do it because they have to !!! not because they want to please or love to - those dogs you see standing outside the showring or the obedience ring with no life in their eyes, no personality - it breaks my heart to see them. They are not good examples of our breed. But then there are those who are serious about their breeding programs (or actually have a breeding 'program') and set about to prove that their dogs are capable of being everything our breed can be. My favourite breed quote is: While all men can admire the nobility and beauty, The breeder is intensely concerned with the type. He shall be the quintessence of all good qualities in compact form. His harmony of character and build is that of a very perfect animal —it is essentially that of utility. Those who seek to elevate any one aspect, at the expense of the whole, are not breeding true Dobermanns but rather just black and tan dogs. Dr Friedrich Karl Dorn
  5. I was waiting for the catch, but it never came After reading that I think I'm going to trade my SBT for a Dobey...how much do ya think I would get on changeover I don't know I think they're about equal in attitude ;) - size may be the only catch, though if it were for a puppy the size issue wouldn't matter .
  6. No problems - I'm not at all biased ofcourse .
  7. Speaking on Dobes and from my experience - will let the shepherd people do their thing. Dobes - have to be with you, must be indoor dogs, need to be worked - obed etc they are much happier if they have a job, need a good hard free run everyday, love to exert themselves physically, though they are more than happy to spend the day on the couch with you if need be, totally devoted to their family - adults and most certainly kids, are normally highly intelligent, very quick to learn, should be outgoing and exhuberant but on alert and aware of all around them, are great guard dogs but don't bark for no reason, love going everywhere with you, are funny - crack jokes and think they are funny , can be possesive of food and toys, are lovely to live with, great company, good travellers, great with other breeds but must be socialized, love a good bone, love to free run - did I mention that ?, love to work with you, love to help you do whatever you are doing, love to help cook dinner , love to keep your feet warm while you are on the computer , YUP they are velcro dogs, sooks, clowns, jokers, totally adorable and the love of my life - wouldn't be without them ;).
  8. If there is - hope the judge had a strong heart and boy you'd have to be brave in this weather and with certain prey breeds bound to be in the ring
  9. So glad to read she has been found and is safe - hope everything is well. What a terrible thing to have happen - bought tears to my eyes. Poor dog.
  10. Don't know of any older dobes looking for homes at the moment - they seem to be very scarce on the ground at the moment and most breeders have long wait lists. One good place to keep an eye on is the NSW dobe club website - even they have nothing listed atm. While I am not sure if they have any dogs to rehome at the moment you could contact Cozdobe in NSW - they were looking at rehoming and getting out of the breed. Might be worth the chance. I don't agree that people wanting an older dog are not committed and that the all important bond can't be as strong. We have only had one rehomed dog - he was 14 months when his first family had to rehome him due to a broken home. The home he has gone to is one of the best you could hope for - his owner has trained and competed with him over the past 2 years and he has gained both CCD & CD titles - they won the ring on multiple occasions and he is now almost ready for CDX (Open). We have also had one puppy go at 5 months - because I couldn't let him go to just any home and he had to be shown - the people who have him are a fantastic dedicated family and do the very best for him - he is so loved and adores his family & multiple other animals they have. Both homes I would happily place another dog with in the future without hesitation. You sound competent and know what you want - though I do agree with the temperament comments made. Having said that our first dobe was a rehomed problem child - Jewel - you can read her story here if you are interested : http://bisartdobermanns.homestead.com/bisartstory.html - they're not all bad and without the experience we gained on our journey with her we wouldn't be where we are today. Good luck with your search.
  11. That is gorgeous But Yes! Your poor Mum Yes, just shows how everything has changed over the years - they left me there until I woke up as well, so obviously the ST breeders weren't worried - the photo was of me curled up still asleep with the dog - so instead of grabbing me and screaming whatever - they all thought what a great photo op and went and found the paper photographer . Will have to see if I can get mum to scan the photo and email it to me - I'm sure she's got it tucked away somewhere. Bring back the olden days !!!
  12. To be honest - I have more good experiences with the general public at shows than bad - perhaps its a breed thing . HMMMM - I remember standing at the Geelong 'Royal' show one year with my young dog who thankfully adores kids, talking to a friend while waiting to go into the ring. All of a sudden her eyes went really big and round staring down behind me so I looked around to see a beautiful young girl who's head was exactly at the same height as my young boys with her hands placed on either side of his face and they were starting adoringly at each other - his nose just touching hers, he was besotted . Her parents and grandparents came rushing back to her with very worried looks on their faces - as soon as they saw her and Ryder together they relaxed. Yes, I know she didn't ask me but god it was georgeous. She just fell in love with him and him with her. Apparently she just has a way with animals. And he loves little girls even more after that. Me - when I was 3 years old I made the front page of the paper because I went missing at a Royal Show - after my poor mother and officials searching for me for god knows how long I was found curled up sound asleep in a show bench with a St Bernard - my parents bred Labs and Weis - so not even our group . My poor mum. I think it is our job to be patient with the idiots and appreciative of the smart ones - PR for our sport is highly needed and a kind lesson goes alot further than cracking it. Picking up puppies out of a pen is another matter again - but then I would never leave my dogs unattended and exposed like that.
  13. Green discharge is normal with a dead or sickly puppy - its infection. The placenta should smell healthy - not a good description sorry. Each bitch is different in their whelp - it all depends on their condition going into the pregnancy and their maintaining that fittness up to whelp, how many puppies they have, any complications etc etc - there are so many variables. Our first litter was 12 puppies delivered in 5 1/2 hours - another was 11 puppies delivered in 7 hours - different bitches - different circumstances - and I am sure if I could remember all the litters my parents bred I would have as many differences again. I would do three things if this were my girl and I wanted to whelp her again. 1. Make sure she was super fit going into her season and maintain this throughout the pregnancy (to her discretion in pregnancy though - not forced). 2. Give her Raspberry Leaf Tablets during pregnancy - it keeps the womb in shape and facilitates an easier labour. 3. Have Oxytocin on hand to give her / or a 24hr vet or breeder friend who can administer the injections - chemical facilitation of contractions. Who knows if there would have been any difference with the last two babies - though it is so very sad to lose them that way. If she were that exhausted after the 3rd puppy I would have called my vet for advice and possibly taken her in (this is where the oxytocin is invaluable). Sorry for you loss but at least your girl came through it all with healthy bouncing babys - enjoy them .
  14. The first meeting we do with all people interested in a puppy with all of our dogs present is never at our home - and if people cannot take the time to do this or aren't interested in doing this then they don't make it any further. But with those that do this meeting normally takes 2 to 3 hours.
  15. I insist that people interested in one of our puppies meet all our dogs as early as possible (not just the parents) and I let the dogs just be themselves - no pressure to behave (not that they don't ofcourse) but I like to see peoples reactions to the big dogs and how they treat the dogs while we have that first meeting. It tells me alot about them and the dogs are great judges of character as well - if they don't trust someone then its no puppy. This is generally before the puppies are born and sometimes before the mating has been done . I have one family waiting for a puppy from a certain bitch because they just fell in love with her and don't want one from another litter . Once the puppies are born I generally let people visit as often as they like - I like the first week to be close friends experienced with whelping only - for the bitches sake and to let everything settle into a routine but after that I am happy for people to visit every week, most come every couple. I try to stagger peoples visits though so that they aren't all there at the same time and for the same reason - I like it to be relaxed and their time - and to be able to answer their questions without too much distraction. Ofcourse if I had a sick puppy or any worries about the litter I would cancel all visits until all was good again - but I would also explain this as well. Like others - we don't breed all that often, only when we want something from the litter.
  16. This applies to declared dangerous dogs and restricted breeds only.
  17. I voted no. With a larger breed like ours it is detrimental to the dogs development to be desexed at a young age. With boys we recommend minimum of 2 yrs and girls 18 months. Why ?? If desexed young the boys particularly have extreme bone growth without the muscle development to support that growth - they can end up with bone growth deformity's, skeletal integrity is greatly compromised and can develop osteo issues at a much earlier age than 'old age' oseto issues (arthritis etc). Also with girls in particular there is a much higher occurance of incontence when they are desexed at a young age. From the vets I have worked with, it seems to be agreed that this is due to the lack of muscle / womb / bladder strength in a baby puppy (talking up to 12 mths). After many years working as a vet nurse and dog trainer (along side Dr R Holmes for alot of it) I know that it does not change the temperament of a dog - so for me that is a mute point. The detriment to the dogs lives overall is not worth it. I know it all boils down to responsible ownership - but if I don't think that someone is responsible enough to raise their dog under our guidelines then I wouldn't sell them a puppy in the first place.
  18. Thanks again everyone - I have contacted the GSDC of SA via their secretary with all the address details on the tag, hopefully they can find the owner of the keys through their membership database and pass on my details to the owner and I can get their keys back to them.
  19. Thanks for your help guys, They were in the smaller square show area with the lighting in between all the buildings - your show area was the front area it so its the opposite side of the VCA Office.
  20. One of my dogs found a set of keys tonight while I was running them at KCC Park. They are trailer keys I think - 4 keys on the ring, red tag with GSDC of SA on it. There is also a RAA Tag with an address on it but no number. 1. Are these people still in Vic ?? Longshot I know 2. Happy to send to address on tag but would like to try and verify details. Thanks, Bernadette & Darred "the sniffer dog" (guess he won't have trouble with the variable surface tracking articles)
  21. Yes, Jed if only they had thought to ask Forgot about this thread actually. Not knocking the white coats but really !! If they have the funding for studies how about working out how to cure cancer in dogs or how about working on finding the specific genes that carry or trigger certain diseases in our beloved animals (and people to . . . ). Put it to good use. I could write a book about dogs emotional life journey's - we do visits to nursing homes - my old boy in his prime during his visit bought an old lady out of her 'deep sleep' for only a short period - she patted him and cried and then went back into her sleep. As she wasn't responding to him being there in the beginning I was going to leave her bedside but he put his front feet up on the side of the bed and put his head next to her hand and nudged her slightly - this was when she responded. She passed that night. He knew - it just amazes me, still after all these years - they all do. Or my dog that freaked out when my pregnant sister came to our house - he just sat in front of her and stared at her belly - like it was talking to him, it was really weird. But when he met the baby for the first time, he looked in the pram at him and his face just said - oh, here you are - he knew who it was.
  22. [ And you are recomending the rum/chardy nerve calmer ??!!! I want to go to the Jed schhhkooool of Shhhow training... fifi Oh Oh - I thoroughly recommend the morning coffee with baileys instead of milk - works a treat (can't stomach wine in am ). Though having driven past and been put through the booze bus test five times in the past month I have reverted to normal coffee for the drive there with the 'special coffee' in a thermos to share once I get there. It works a treat to keep off the frozen fingers and toes on those cold cold am setups too . . . Tis also funny when the dobermann in the backseat puts their head through the front window to check out what mr policeman is doing sticking his arm in the front window Me thinks the police are onto the dog show drinking set .
  23. After far too many wasted hours I put the following on our website - it seems to be working with genuine enquiry's and dedicated breed people flowing through. I don't think its rude of me to say this - it allows me to develop quality relationships with the people who do want a dog from us and gives me alot more time to help them get ready for their big day (puppy coming home ). Also - I have never advertised any of our litters - all our puppy owners have come through our website. Please understand that we do not breed for the 'puppy market' or for financial gain and as such do not have puppies available on a regular basis. This means that we do unfortunately for you have a waiting list and this means you may have to wait for your choice of puppy. Currently we have 6 girls and 3 boys reserved from our next two litters. It is your choice as to whether you are prepared to wait for one of our puppies or want to just take the first one that comes along. If this is the case please don't waste yours or our time by enquiring about a puppy at this time. This page will be updated when we know what puppies we have available.
  24. This was done by some people - however no longer as it is now illegal in every state in Australia to dock, band, remove a dogs tail unless it is deemed necessary by a vet due to injury or disease. The law changed March 16th 2010.
