That breeding program was done in the late 60's early 70's from memory - stand to be corrected. And they were wild animals to start with until they went through several generations of careful selection. I guess that humans have developed in our ability to care for and have empathy for animals over that time. There is a full documentary of that alone which I have seen several times - think I may have it on video tape :D - thats how old it is . . .
-
That was worth watching - while I have seen some of it while working at ADT / NDTF dog training there were some new snippits of information there as well. It just confirms what we all know. I love my dogs .
-
I'm interested - this is so important if we are to have any future. Please add me to your list.

Was wondering if we could have a new forum catagory for legislations - passed / propposed from Government / Councils etc etc I am finding different discussions in different forums and thought it would be great to have one place where we could all see them or post when they first come up. Maybe we can also achieve more when all resources are in one place. Just a thought - feel free to delete.

4th Annual Mdba Dog Owners Choice Awards

Well done Judi - well deserved . -
No. Let them damn well prove otherwise. I am over all this crap. Besides they know our vet well - he goes up against them in court for most breeders in this state. They can ring him. Over it. *Them / They = RSPCA.
-
How would they know if the breeder or the vet did it. I have had another breeder do our first 2 litters and they were perfect. Vet did the next one and 2 had nails regrow - both had to then go under anesthetic to have them removed !! Give me the breeders knowledge anytime. But the vet doesn't give a receipt for work done ??? (they come here). So how would they know who had done them ??
-
Yes, bit late now . What an appropriate name he has though .
-
Nah - dont' worry - 1. your shows are over b4 you would have time to annoy anyone and 2. everyone up there is soooooooooo relaxed that they wouldn't even notice A friend told me once that they followed a dog trailer in a town they didn't know to find the show eventually to get to the destination to find out that those people were going to pick up a dog for someone and they were the 2nd group on so in no rush - friends then had to find the show by 'local' directions and then park and run into the ring with dogs. I've always been somewhat cautious following others since then .

:p :p :D :D Now that would solve ALL of the problems they have with us breeders !!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't go giving them ideas - though thankfully it would be illegal just like tail docking :p .
-
Yup - reminise of the Tail docking issue. Lets not even go there - how are those braccy breeds fairing now ??? And they are slapping you with C-Sections as well. Well we may have to have fugly tails on our dogs but at least we won't have to change their entire head structure and we will be able to whelp them - albiet not when or how its suits us . For Dogs sake we have to stop this.

My young boy (nearly 3 yrs) loves toilet rolls (paper on preferred ) and he has had a 80 cm Pooh Bear since he was a puppy which he adores and takes everywhere with him. Pooh even goes to shows with us - funny to see a 40+ kg adult male dobermann carrying a Pooh Bear around. Ours love the toilet rolls in general and also the plastic bottles but again any soft toy with a squeaky or a noise maker inside is asking to be disected and one has his blanky from babyhood as well which he sucks on and carries around the house all the time. They certainly have their preferences.

Glucodin - you can get it from the chemist and most supermarkets. I like to keep supplementing them for a few days past when they start to improve - they are improving because of the extra you supplement and when you stop too soon they can just deteriorate again. Also I have found time and time again the simpler you keep it the better they do - their systems are still developing remember. Sub- fluids are good if the vet will do them but again need to be done every 2 hours not just once at the vet. If they will give you the equip to do it at home - great. Who said breeding was easy ???

Here is a mix given to me by an 'ol timer' for dehy puppies. They told me once that they had a puppy on this and only this until 5 weeks before the puppies system was able to cope with formula. Sometimes the things we give them are too much for the system to cope with and so they get nothing from it and shut down. It worked better and quicker for the last pup I supplemented than anything else I have ever used. 500mls boiled water tsp bi-carb soda tsp salt 4 dsp Glucodin (or glucose powder) mix together till disolved and let cool. adminster at room temp - no need to store in fridge. I gave 10 mls (300gm pup) 4 times a day for 48 hrs and then 5ml 4 times a day for 48 hrs - then 10 mls once a day for 4 days. (pup was on mum 2 days after starting - just wanted to ensure all ok). Obviously you need to adjust mls required to your puppy / weight / condition. Good luck & fingers crossed

I'm guessing you have concluded that the dilute gene being the reason for the skin problems is only referring to the stafford? I am not aware of specific skin issues being linked to the dilute gene in some other breeds - some of which are exclusively dilutes. Could it possibly be that the skin issues are a bigger problem in the blues because the overbreeding of blues has resulted in poor specimens with untested or overlooked issues being bred? and because most of the breeders out there who are doing this are very much breeding for the "rare" blue colour, there is a higher incidence of blues with skin issues? Please feel free to direct me to the genetic research that links the dilute gene to skin issues - I hadn't heard about this except for in the blue staffy threads. Dobes have the dilute gene - black dilute is blue and brown dilute is fawn. It is a recessive gene and both parents must carry the gene to produce it. Though I know of one dog who was in a litter with all four colours - so black sire and brown dam both carried the gene - he was a dominant black dog, meaning he produced only black regardless of the bitches colour and hereditary. According to our colour / hereditary charts this is not possible . Love genetics. Alot of the blue and fawn dobes do develop coat problems though again I know of 3 fawns who have stunning coats and are in their later years now - the blues tend to have a rougher and thinner coat. FCI judges will dismiss blue and fawn dogs from the ring even though they are recognised here. Interestingly the blue and fawns tend to have the most correct stunning heads in our breed and produce fantastic progeny - though not sure that I would double up on the alopecia issue I would certainly keep a fawn to breed on with if we produced one (we do have the genes in our lines).
-
With only two puppies she won't have a huge amount - they tend to only produce what they need. But I give a milk drink which is said to increase milk production - increased fluids will increase her capacity to produce milk. Milk drink is: 2 tbsp honey disolved in 1/2 cup boiling water - add cup of milk (I use goats milk) and then 2 egg yolks - whisk it up and ensuring it is warm not hot give to your girl. I have only ever had one bitch not like this all the others love it. Best of luck with your babies .
-
Good luck to everyone - we miss out because our dogs picked up a gastro bug at our specialty at kcc park on saturday . Well at least I can watch the great race in the comfort of warm dry home .

Got ours today . Don't have time to type it all up but there are a few changes to judges due to illness and large entries. Last number 2419 - 300 + up on last year. Gotta love Sunbury.
-
So sad to hear - one of our puppy owners lost their girl a couple of weeks ago - same circumstances but she was nearly 3 years old. We have offered them a baby free as well - they have 3 boys who adored their dog and are heartbroken - it breaks our hearts just as much as they are always our puppies, what else can you do but cry with them. I spoke to the husband and made him fully aware that they had time to think and he didn't have to bring it up straight away - to wait until the timing was right. I will hold a puppy for them until they tell me no. Feel for you.

It is against regulaions to exhibit a dog when it is sick. This dog was obviously sick and the owner has admitted as much. My question is was the owner / exhibitor taken to task and reported for exhibiting a sick dog under the regulations by the appropriate authority ? If not - why the hell not !!!

Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road?
Bisart Dobes replied to RealityBites's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks - needed a laugh. -
I like to have a connection to the breed history, I think its a nice way to honour your commitment to that breed. Ours is Bisart - the name of the first dobermann bitch registered. And I love it because of its connection to the history of our breed. It is funny however how often I get breed people comment on it and ask where its from ????? - and the revelated ones who come and tell me that they now know where our prefix originated. And if I got another breed I would get another prefix :D. Whatever you choose make it short as it gives you more room to play with registered names.

I paid for a catalogue but I didn't get a stamp :D Its on the back of the envelope.
