The Importance Of A Kennel's Name
Bisart Dobes replied to Summersaint's topic in General Dog Discussion
Bisart was the first ever registered Dobermann Bitch & the foundation bitch of our breed. (To those before us we owe all we have ). I am constantly amused when people who have been in the breed forever tell me they have worked out where we got our prefix from . -
The 'back way' Lilydale, Yarra Valley, Yea, Bonnie Doon to Benalla - takes 3 hours from KCC Park to Benalla - unless you get stuck behind a caravan .
-
Yup - I'll be there with our neuter + our other showdogs if there is .

Tonight I heard that there has been a positive Lyssavirus Tests on Bats in Kew Victoria. I cannot find any further information on this though. I know that it is in the same family of disease as Rabies - its closest form and that it can be transferred to humans via bite / saliva but would like to know if there are any risks to the canine population ?? Does anyone know the risks ?

Thats awful - I would be out of my mind if one of my girls went missing / got stolen at that point. God, hope there is a good outcome for them.

We camped there and it was great - good facilities, loads of room to walk dogs etc etc

I vaguely remember our vet telling me that the worm cycle is 21 days approx - so providing you worm before then they will be fine. I worm at day 14 - bitch is wormed once mated regardless of when she was last done and then when the pups are done.

Dog Wheelchairs/mobility Carts

No problem, Jo is a great person and invests herself into every dog / family that goes into her business. She will do everything she can to help you and your dog. Good luck with your dog. -
Associate Vs Main/limited Register
Bisart Dobes replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sorry but you have to go to no effort. If your puppy is indeed a purebred dog & registered then the breeder of the dog MUST supply registration papers. Complicated circumstances are not your problem & if the breeder won't supply the papers to you then report them to Dogs Qld. It is the breeders choice as to whether the dog is main or limited. -
Dog Wheelchairs/mobility Carts

I don't have any personal experience with these but Jo from Aqua Paws supplies them - also runs rehab but she is in Vic so rehab out for you. They are built to fit your dog perfectly. Link below: http://www.aquapaws.com.au/a/About_us/Home -
Sounds to me like this puppy would be better off in another home, sadly. What they need to do (as said above) takes time and commitment and it sounds like they just don't have either. Belgians aren't an easy breed to own - I wouldn't say they are a beginners dog / breed. Yes, I know you said Xbred but the belgian temperament traits are strong. Can you find a Belgian breeder in SA to help them with breed specific advice ? This is where I would start. Poor puppy, certainly hasnt' had the best start.

No - I would never remove puppies from their mother unless I absolutely had to. The puppies are so vulnerable in those first few days they must have thier mother curled around them, stimulating them, licking them. This maintains their body temp which they have no control over. It is essential that they do not become chilled which by removing them you do risk. They must have her warm body constantly available to stop chilling. They must have constantly available a supply of rish warm milk. They need to sleep, wake, nurse, be stimulated to empty and sleep. I am an advocate of the theory - "The more you interfere the less the bitch will do". To stimulate milk production a top diet must be a priority for your bitch her whole life not just when she is pregnant. Adding fenugreek to the diet of your pregnant bitch does seem to help milk production - 1 to 2 tsp a day after mated. The Billinghurst Milk Drink - this I start with our girls at about week 7 - have not had one refuse it yet and never an issue with the runs. It does however seem to have milk dripping when they are ready to feed pups which is what we want. 250ml milk (cow or goat) 1tsp honey 1 tsp flaxseed oil 1 raw egg (or 2 egg yolks) 1 or 2 junket tablets plus multi B & C Vit Blend it and keep at body temp for about 10 minutes for the junket to work. I always allow my girls to eat as many placentas as they want to as well, just in case they decide to go off their food after whelping (hasn't happened yet) - the placentas and milk drink will get them through several days without losing condition. I have had one maiden bitch not cope with 12 puppies to start but once her Vit C levels were back up she was fine. I didn't however remove her puppies from the box - I just took half off her teats while the other half fed. Once she had slept, relaxed, Vit C levels back up and had a feed herself she took over and never looked back.

Oh the counter surfers . Gotta love them. We have had: Generation One - Rhemy - who will steal ANYTHING !!! off the bench (no amount of yelling, spraying with water etc etc fazed her) Generation Two - Lexi - who uses the bench as a nose rest and uses her tongue as adeptly as any dog I have ever seen to get what she wants - she is however much more subtle than her mother - Gen One - she also resorts to her begging dance when she really really wants something. & Generation Three - Jade - who blows both her mother & her grandmother out of the water and just jumps onto the bench !!! I think she may be part ridgy . Sorry - No Help Here . . . We just don't leave things out.

Unusual Titre Test Result
Bisart Dobes replied to aussielover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If she were my dog & at her age I would do this vacc. Albiet several years since I stopped vet nursing all the papers I read strongly suggested that the first annual vaccination is much needed for full protection. It was after that that titre testing + results = vacc or not. Still your choice. -
Looking For Some Walking Coat Hangers
Bisart Dobes replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
I did walking coathanger duties in ACT over the weekend (or Sat at any rate  ) - I got asked several times if WS was my business. Do you want a business partner Sway BUT I got to say that I was just doing my 'Walking Coat Hanger Duties' which got a giggle . Lots of people said they tried to get one & were jealous - will have to watch where I put it me thinks . . . Unfortunately had to leave Sat avo to get a sick dog home who had surgery yesterday morning as soon as I got back home to remove a head from a toy out of his intestines. LONG drive home stopping everytime he was sick in the car (couldn't leave the poor boy in the trailer) - thank dog for all that extra clean bedding I always throw in at the last minute. He's made a great recovery - but how scarey, this is our first blockage dog and he dropped condition so fast - he lost 5 kg in under 24 hrs. His heart rate was 158 at the vets and he was so quiet and just stiff - poor baby. -

Love mine but its black & won't photograph well . You are more than welcome to come & look at it when I next next show - July 16th is next show in Melb I think . . .

Are Our Dogs Still Able To Talk Speak Thier Language?
Bisart Dobes replied to miss whippy's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think we interfere so much with their normal interactions that they lose the ability. It takes concerted effort to socialise & raise a puppy according to its needs not ours. We have people who have one of our puppies whose temperament is fantastic - they were told to take him out of the puppy socialisation class / session because he is too big (& a dobermann ). They live in country Vic so not much choice of obedience school. Today we met up and he had a great time running & playing with our dogs but also our 11 week old Brittany baby . . . he was fantastic with her, gentle, careful and couldn't have been better behaved (AND they were all offlead !). A total shame that he was denied the puppy class socialisation by the club but luckily his temperament is so lovely it won't affect him too much. It wouldn't be the same for all dogs who are denied this vital opportunity though and alot of people would simply give up going to obedience if treated like that and then the dog loses out altogether. -
Haven't read all of this thread so I may be repeating something already said but . . . Once my dogs have learnt the individual exercises they then work for their 'bikkas' at the end of a run through. I have their treat in their container in my obed bag and they are shown that it is there. Their reinforcement in between exercises are verbal reward & reminder - ie "good dog, get bikkas for that". They know they will get them at the end - Yep I have Pavlov's dogs . & a tip given to me years ago was a shot of vodka w a shot of raspberry cordial - works a treat.

It is there in the dobe gene pool but it is a recessive gene and extremely rare. If people in our breed would work together we could combine the existing dogs in Australia carrying this gene and perhaps the gene would become more common - though it is still a recessive gene. There was an application to the NSW Canine made to use dobes & another breed to develop a new bob tailed dobe but it was rejected at ANKC level because of WA's vote against. I think it was the corgi or boxer they were looking at. Would have been far better to look at the Rottweiler imho. There are some thoughts that the bob tail gene carries deformaties, I have seen one case of this myself - poor dog should have been pts at birth - he couldn't eat any solid food, couldn't digest properly, couldn't defecate without help etc etc. Yet this dog was used at stud numerous times because he was a natural bob tail. He had no tail, no anus & was missing part of his bowel - not what I would call a bob tail - but the gene was there.

And here we are doing the tedious property search & actually going to purchase it - what was I thinking !!! All we need to do is simply find some vacant land and move onto it. Once we have been there for long enough we can take possession of it LEGALLY !!!! Blow it if it belongs to someone else who actually has the paperwork to prove that ! WTF . . . Nice my A---.
