  1. It's not against the COE of the ANKC to sell to certain pet shops (I presume PP is PIAA accredited) However, they have breached this code: Bit of a scam by PP though. Really? They care SO MUCH about this dog??? Bullcrap. They just want everyone to think they are so wonderful giving this little doggy a chance.
  2. - Cut up old towels into puppy-sized squares, this will mean you need less towels, and there will be less to fumble around with if you need to rub a puppy. We did this and then just chucked the towel squares into a plastic garbage bag, rather than washing them. It was a good excuse to buy new ones LOL. - Ziva ate every placenta she was quick! So she vomited and the paper towels came in handy then - I also gave her a syringe full of Calcium Sandoz between each puppy. I also had another syringe to give her water with for the first day or so after whelping as she was reluctant to drink. - a digital clock (I used my mobile phone) to record birth time. - go for a baby bottle/newborn teat rather than a pet nursing bottle (several breeders suggested this to me- fortunately I didn't need to supplement but I have given my guys the teats to suck from both types and they much prefer the human baby one!!) - We used a polar fleece blanket to cover the pups with (in a plastic storage box) when we took them down to the vet etc. - I found unscented baby wipes to be very handy, both for refreshing yourself with (LOL) and for wiping a pup down if mum's a bit lazy in that department (Ziva ) - whelping notes & any books bookmarked to the appropriate pages! - I didn't have brandy but did have a spray-bottle of Rescue Remedy I made good use of it We also had a card table set up close to the whelping box (while leaving access on 3 sides in case it was needed), with everything laid out so it was easy to find. Didn't end up using half the stuff (Latex gloves LOL, hemostats, scissors, dental floss etc but glad it was there).
  3. Judy's position is even worse because it doesn't relate to her dogs being in distress or disabled (as it says in the Victorian law). Hers is an 'offence' about regulation under a law that doesn't have the grasp of English to describe debarking as a regulated procedure A procedure that's OK under the same law.. And has inbuilt discrimination against show dogs. If ever a law needs to be rewritten, that one does. I'd say that animal welfare laws.....in respect of puppy farming....should be far more monitored by the Dpt of Primary Industries whose Minister is responsible for them anyway. So Primary Industry Inspectors in the field should be able to act early re any source from which puppies are sold. That's another lesson I'd hope Joe Public would get from the program....asking questions how such places can develop to such an appalling state, in the first instance. Exactly, Mita. I didn't mean to compare but it made me feel physically ill to read that the punishment was a mere slap on the wrist and they can still own dogs etc for all the dogs they tortured. More proof that reg'd breeders are easy targets IMO.
  4. Glad Im not the only one who believed this! I must admit I THOUGHT I was buying from a breeder...it was a lady selling them for a breeder who lives out west. She had 2 puppies left and I didnt get to meet the Mum or Dad. Depends on which council area the pup was bred and sold in. This link will tell you which councils introduced the law last year and which ones will do it this year. Personally I recommend pups be obtained from a registered breeder. If you can't meet mum and dad, you have no idea what health or behavioural traits your pup had inherited. A young adult dog from a rescue that temperament tests is a more known quantity and few baby pups end up in rescue anyway. Thanks! I am in one of the councils that introduced it in 2009!!! Can I contact the "breeder" and ask her to pay for micro-chipping or am I dreaming??? i did buy directly from a registered breeder and it wasnt microchipped i guess you live and learn Recent thread from Breeders section: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=186379 ETA: Our 3 registered dogs from Victoria were all microchipped by their breeders (with the oldest being born in 2004 - gosh Caber is old ), and I will be chipping my litter when they get vacc'd.
  5. I didn't see the episode but $9,000 for 140 puppy farm dogs??? Would be pocket change to an establishment like that..... it's something like $64 per dog Considering what poor Judy with the Tibbies is up for that is f***ing disgusting!!!!! How about RSPCA working harder on the laws and minimum sentences/punishments for the people who are REALLY cruel. Of course, after seeing this on the tv, more people will go to donate thinking they are helping Hopefully it will open a few more eyes about puppy farms.....
  6. If it were any of the pounds I've seen, I agree. A tiny baby is far better off in a caring family home than a concrete and steel pen where they don't even move the dogs to hose them out each day. Ditto. My first dog was from the Lort Smith Animal Hospital, where she had been since 3 weeks of age (she was 14 weeks when I got her), they did their best but she was so timid and afraid of everything and spent the most vital socialisation periods in a kennel situation being bullied by older pups and not really seeing much other than the shelter staff/volunteers etc. I don't condemn the LSAH at all, but she would have been much better off in a one on one situation IMHO. I believe in Victoria pet shops may not sell a puppy under 8 weeks of age??
  7. It's not an impossible task (many breeders will have several pups at once for eg), but it's one that definitely requires extra work & dedication from the owner IMO. It is not something that should be entered into lightly (not that buying a single puppy should be a snap decision!!).
  8. How many Border Terriers & smooth Collies please??
  9. Poor woman I hope she knows what she's getting into with a special breed like an Akita, too!!! Beautiful dogs but not for everyone IMO.
  10. I would love to register my litter online- it would also mean I don't have to worry about my pups getting funny names due to my poor handwriting
  11. Go Will You will have to let me know how you go
  12. 3 weeks today they were so excited when I threw them into the playpen LOL. Taken them out now though as I want to keep them nice (Sorry, I couldn't resist putting photos of my babies up! I'm such a proud Grandma )
  13. Some of my babies with their new toys They were most impressed, as was I- they are perfect size & texture (soft) for little pups.
  14. My tugs arrived this morning They will be PERFECT for my puppy-packs thank you Might have to order some for my grown-ups too LOL. Will post some pics later
  15. We have used ginger snap biscuits on Nessa when she was a pup (going around roundabouts/tight corners seemed to set her off... fortunately she grew out of it!!). A scoop of plain vanilla ice cream about 30 minutes before travel can also help settle the stomach.
  16. From what I can remember the Expo has never really had big numbers. Many won't go as the don't like the venue as it's small and full of public people wandering around. I love it and was dissapointed when the stopped it! The shopping was always amazing, I always went home broke!! Ditto!!! The Pet Expo 2005 was my 2nd ever show LOL (and my first champ show :D ), and have been ever year since barring last year when it was not on. Would have entered this year if it weren't for pups. However hoping to come down for a wander (and to empty my bank account :( ). I always had a great time and picked up heaps of bargains!! Oh SP - you better come and say hello!! I was gonna go on the Friday Might have to make it the Saturday instead LOL. Just worried about leaving my bubbas (mum's working). But I want Sohvi cuddles... and to see my handsome Bear-man. Oh the dilemmas Oh for people going- make sure you take enough cash- the ATMs there are the stupid generic ones that charge a small fortune to withdraw from lol.
  17. We should get a discount on our fees god this is pathetic!!
  18. As an experiment, when mum took her smooth Collie away for 4 days over Christmas, I vacuumed every day. With just my 2 Border Terriers in the house, I didn't even fill up half the Dyson The Collie comes home and a day later I vacuum again and yep, it's full :D
  19. Our 3 (Border Terrier male 5.5 years, Border Terrier female almost 3yrs & smooth Collie female 18 months, all entire), generally get along very well, share beds and toys etc and are fine when being dished out treats HOWEVER the 2 girls need to be supervised more carefully when playing with toys as if it gets too frantic, they will have a bust-up over it. The other day Nessa (collie) had her head in the recycle bin licking an empty dog food tin. Ziva, female BT, growled at her (which is not uncommon, Ziva will often growl if one of the other dogs is trying to get something off the bench etc, but she never goes any further), so mum put the tin on the window sill until she could get outside to put it in the main recycle bin. Ziva then launched herself at Nessa, fortunately mum grabbed Nessa by the scruff and was able to peel Ziva off (I wasn't home). It was interesting because every other fight they have had (about 3), Nessa had started it and Ziva had just retaliated. However Nessa & Caber seem to get along perfectly, all Caber has to do is look at Ness and she will submit or go away. Occasionally she pushes his buttons by pouncing on him etc and he will snap after a while, but he never has to bite her or get aggressive. ETA: The two terriers can do anything together, playing, feeding etc. I supervise but never have I had to intervene between the two of them.
  20. No one ever messed with my Newfoundland when he drew himself up to his full height and growled :D Anywhere, any time of day or night I could walk with him. No doubt he would be useless if someone DID try to take him on, but no one did (and we would pass dark alleys with drug deals, drunks, even the neighbours having their domestics etc).
  21. We got lost on the way to Erskine Park lol. It wasn't my fault though :D Our furthest was from Melbourne to Sydney for the Collie National. Would consider doing it again but the new no-camping rule makes it hard ;) We are about 45 minutes from KCC Park and 30 from Bulla/Sunbury. Lancefield is about the same as KCC for us, and Geelong is only about an hour. So we do all those regularly!! When we get our trailer & a bigger tent we hope to do more weekends and travel a greater distance :D I would like to go upto Canberra and SA at some point..... Not sure if we'll do the next Collie National in WA.....
  22. I bought one for my Border Terrier (she pulls like a steam train) and it worked okay, but it wasn't the best for her IMO as being a very narrow dog, she was able to squirm out of it. So I switched to a Sporn harness (NOT the one that tightens, it's more a figure 8 shape) and found this to be MUCH better for her. Still working on the training thing but at least we can get out of the house now :D Where abouts are you? I'm happy to lend my Easy-Walk to you to try it out before buying one?
