  1. I think entering an already titled neuter has it's merits- as I suggested earlier it's a way that someone who's purchased a retired show dog to get into it, it can also be a good show of how well a dog has matured, especially those in the veteran age bracket; ie, is the dog STILL sound enough & correct?? If it's got a dipped topline, is stiff on the move, teeth have gone etc I think it should be judged to the standard and refused if it's not as it should be. As for open shows and members comps- rare as hen's teeth down here,. In fact, our local member's comp has been put on indefinite hold sue to lack of interest :mad I had SO MUCH FUN those Thursday nights. And so did the dogs. Open shows, so far this year I know of 2. Mum has entered one, can't remember how many in the Working Group but there are only 16 terriers. 16!!! It's in conjunction with a champ show too so who knows what that's about??? Really spewing that I didn't enter Caber now (Open shows are his forte ;) ). But overall I understand what Poodlefan is saying and I agree with most of it- it was an opportunity to make a great class for newbies/inexperienced handlers to dip their toe in the water, so to speak at every champ show (so not at the odd Open/Member's comp), and with an end goal in mind It also just opens up the World of showing to so may more people who otherwise may not be able to or want to, keep an entire animal. As for the needing balls to show comment- I disagree, I understand that it's relatively true but IMO it shouldn't be. Showing should be a fun hobby, a social outing, not the be all and end all of life and it certainly should not be a venue for anybody to make anyone else feel inadequate :headshake:
  2. I don't want to use pending (I am using the 24 hour service the day they are chipped to get their papers back ASAP- I want my baby's name in the catalogue very first show ;) ), so it looks like if I want to invite any of my puppy buyers to enter in the specialty, I have to put the pups on Main Register. Bum. I know I can always then transfer to Limited after but that screws up any chances of putting them back on main if they turn out good enough (thinking of the new class). We rarely have more than 2 babies (often only 1) at our specialty so it would have been nice to have a whole bunch of 'em, plus to support the club etc and maybe get a couple people interested in showing, Oh well. Anyway, I am 99% sure I have read something, a few years ago now, about pups under 6 months not having to be on Main and their owners didn't need to be CC members either, but can't for the life of me find it (it was probably on a pamphlet and for some reason, I think it was NSW anyway. But figured it was worth a shot Ta muchly.
  3. My oldest dog knows Heel, Right side (heeling on the right), Free (walk anywhere he likes, to the end of the lead but NO pressure), Lead Out (walk at the end of the lead with some pressure, this helps with muscle building as I don't use off-leash areas, and I also had the idea of entering him in weight-pull ) & Close (means to stay close by, but not in the heel position, just a short, lose leash). I love being able to walk him in so many different ways
  4. They will all be registered by 3 months, it's just I want to know what my options are for our breed specialty (they will be 5 months ), I'm just thinking it might be a nice opportunity for some of the nicer pups & their people to try the show ring out.
  5. LOL SG!! Mr Green & Miss Pink are the 2 standouts :p you have a good eye :p Let me know if you wanna come over for a cuddle AND YAY for another Smoothie :D :p still need to work out a playtime for Nessa & Bronte. The only difference between them seems to be their ears LOL. And Bronte is probably more obedient :D
  6. I can't find anything on the DV website but I recall reading somewhere (may have been another state's CC), that in the baby puppy class, the dog does not have to be on the Main Register to be shown? Is this still (or was it ever?) the case?? In Victoria BTW. Thanks
  7. I would be very hesitant to allow one of my pups to be shown if neutered at a young age (I consider 6 months still very young, and if desexed at that age, you wont get the correct head shape for one thing), and if that was the case- the dog would still have to be registered on the normal Main Register. Which some breeders are uncomfortable doing. I dunno. Just thinking out loud. My suggestion doesn't work anyway (even with a 12 month rule for Neuter Champ. the pup would want some exposure to the ring beforehand and so needs to be on regular Main anyway ) So ignore me.
  8. I cant remember which one,it is the same weekend as the canberra royal Yay maybe its the Bendigo show......see it does pay to stay local BB :p I will be the wierd stalker lady looking for Bloodhound babies now :p :D But we will have extra White Sheppie cuddles. :p Never know, it could be Berwick :D ;)
  9. For the crazy fun, I'd go for Westminster (plus, the extreme-ness of showing in the USA amuses me ), and frankly, I prefer the style of my breed over there. Though of course it would be lovely to see 300+ Borders in one spot, as they also have their breed champ show close to Crufts. But from what I've heard, Crufts is very tiring & difficult to see anything etc. Would absolutely love to go to World Show one day... get to see so many different breeds that we just don't have here.
  10. That's what I was thinking too. I know I'll bring my older girl back out just for that title. She may as well add that to her list of achievements. Most of the people who I've talked to so far aren't going to bring out their "pets" so to speak, it will be their best that have retired due to things like pyo etc. I can't see it encouraging new people, as they will still need a main register dog or bitch. I think we'll see a lot of good dogs, that usually come for the ride each week and loved showing but until now couldn't unless neuter was offered. I still think it could encourage new people though if they have an interest in showing but perhaps don't want to have the extra effort of an entire animal. For example, the boy that I'm going to enter was neutered at a young age due to being cryptorchid. He is still the best dog in my backyard, from a breed standard point of view and I honestly can't wait to have him out. As a breeder, I still would rather sell a nice dog (show wise) on a limit/ desexing contract to the 'right' home if it comes along, even if that does mean it gets desexed. This way, like one of my current puppy buyers, they can desex their pets (preferred option) but still have fun with their dog and experience the show ring (which is something they expressed an interest in). Can't wait to see how it all pans out! Lets hope it encourages more people to join the showing world At the very least it gives breeders AND newbies the option to try showing before either has to commit to selling or owning an entire animal. And if the dog is a male, it can always be collected before neutering. I am so excited now LOL. Even though I don't have any eligible dogs but it certainly gives me more options (ie: I could neuter Caber and keep a male pup from my litter, or desex said male pup when mature & before the trouble period). Definitely a great option also for those with performance dogs (as Ness said). I do wonder though if it should be changed from 6 months to 12 months for eligibility, to put less pressure on people to desex at 6 months.
  11. Maybe I'm stupid, but why does it matter to the makers of the product how much a supplier sells items for??? As long as they are still getting their money???
  12. Some all breeds have the Neuter class, but at the moment, all you can get is Neuter in Group or Show... not really that exciting and often there are only a handful of dogs in each group etc. So it's been largely unsupported I believe. Hopefully the idea of a title will bring more dogs out though!!! We have Neuter at our breed specialty Usually a few entries, mostly retired showies.
  13. Can you please bring one over when you visit?? I want to see what they look like I think I want the smaller (old) one, I don't like big chunky bags when walking the dogs.
  14. Fantastic news This will definitely be a great way to get people into showing IMO, as well as keeping some outstanding animals out there!!! Will definitely consider putting nice pups of mine on Main Neuter (If they are nice enough of course!!) so that if the owners want to give showing a try, they can will just have to make sure if they are interested that they don't neuter early..... Will also be good IMO for breeders who rehome retired breeding/showing dogs, they get the security of knowing the dog is neutered but the new owner can learn the ropes with a trained dog I hope Class 18/18a become compulsory!!! BB- I do so hope Miss Will can strut her stuff
  15. How are everyone's January bubba's going?? Mine are 4 weeks now and it hit me the other night that they will be gone soon I will sure miss them but for now just enjoying them. Ziva pretty much only feeds them and leaves (and I have started them on one meal a day plus chicken necks which they love attacking ). They love their toys, chewing things, some bark & growl while others are quieter. A couple are as bold as brass and bound upto Caber & Nessa (Caber likes them but is a bit unsure while Nessa is curious but runs away as soon as they come near ). Finally finished building their outside yard (they have been out in the dog run a few times but have now given them and extension onto this so they have grass). All are still growing, our little runt (yellow) has now caught up and is about the same size as our next smallest (purple), so I'm very pleased Some updated photos are in the photos section of the forum!
  16. WOW how gorgeous are they????? And 5 (with 4 girls for you to pick from ), is that a big litter for the breed? It sounds big. Congratulations and wishing you all the best for the other litter.
  17. If the RSPCA thinks that a Greyhound should be 50kg..... God help us all
  18. Abby is a gorgeous girl!!! I would have told the woman she's not even a Pit Bull or 'freaked out', grabbed the dogs close and screeched "OMG WHERE????????? I know all dogs aren't everyone's cup of tea, but to call a particular (strange) dog ugly in front of it's owner is just not nice. I say these things about either my own dogs or friends' dogs who I know don't mind. I think it's the manner in which people say these things- some people really do sound like they are genuinely serious or nasty about it. And yes, like WnH, after a few hundred times it gets so very old But really, would you like your dog referred to as a cloth on the end of a rag that cleans the kitchen floor?
  19. Awwwww poor little doggy, clearly neglected Caber does the same thing with buckets/bowls. They are funny, aren't they??
  20. The one near us (Hoppers Crossing) sometimes has rescue puppies/kittens for sale. Can't think where they are from though, might be the Lort Smith but it's not the LDH.
  21. I think this is an excellent & true statement. All of it. With regard to wolves, stallions and in fact any wild animal really, their very survival is based on survival of the fittest/strongest/healthiest. And it's their own instinct which leads to them breeding and who they breed with. Domestic dogs don't (usually) have a choice in the matter so I believe comparing them to wild species is irrelevant.
  22. I was thinking about this today and wondering do harlequin Danes have the lethal gene that merles do?? Ie: is it genetically safe or not to breed Harle to harle? I know with collies in particular merle to merle should be avoided, or only ever done for one generation and not the next (keeping in mind that a lethal white is NOT the same as a white). A member of this forum had the unfortunate offspring of a merle to merle AND brother/sister mating - aside from other health issues, the pups were born with defective or non-existent eyes. Of course, these pups were irresponsibly bred (backyarder I believe), but IMO you really need to understand what is behind your puppy and why the mating was so close/what the motivation was. I prefer line-breeding (cousins, grandparent/grandchild, aunt/nephew (which I did)) personally. Complete outcrosses bother me as much as tight inbreedings though, especially if all you ever do is outcross (ie: I would do a complete outcross then breed that offspring back to a closer relative).
  23. Must remember to get another lot this weekend
