  1. Or the other way around as well. In some breeds I think it's more likely they will actually face unauthorised breeding more than potential health risks from desexing. Let's face it, speying or neutering early (I'm lumping them both under the term desexing for this post) can have health risks. Can, not always. Selling un desexed dogs can lead to dodgy people backyard breeding. Can, there is that word again. I can see both sides of the argument. Desexing early can, or let's say, might cause problems, there is research and evidence that it may do so. But not every dog desexed early has problems, many don't. Not desexing early is best for the dog growth wise, but means the dog can, let's say might be bred from by anyone at any time with no control. Which is worse? To be honest None or both. I'd say both have equal good and bad points. Not every dog sold entire will be bred from secretly on the side and not every dog desexed early will develop health problems. It's up to the individual as a breeder and a buyer as to what they choose. I think both sides of the argument are right in a way.
  2. A lab/rotti cross wouldn't be that much bigger than his own dog anyway... I wonder if he was mis-quoted?
  3. There is variations of personality/skills in animals. I have two cats, both British Shorthairs. Flansy is younger, he is clumsy and hoons about and bangs into things or runs into my leg. There is nothing wrong with him, he is just an idiot young skalliwag. Squishy is older and when she was his age she went through the same zoomie stage but never overshot her dashes or bashed into things/people. When I had my two dogs it was the same. Both boys of the same breed and first cousins in fact. Both would have their crazy moments but Wylie would be the one to run into my leg or go A over T when zooming. Near where I live there was a boardwalk that had a low narrow concrete divider thing about 20cms wide down the middle. Loki loved, (and still does, the prissy lil show pony) jumping up and running along it. Wylie used to try and copy him but was always too clumsy and would fall off. I think some pets are just clumsy :D
  4. With permission I can post these photos of a friends dog. She is a Husky/Deerhound mix. (According to Pound) She is beautiful! It's funny because it's not so obvious in a photo but you can really pick the Husky in her personality when you meet her. She has a big sickle tail too, which you can't see in the photo.
  5. The alizin injection will cost less than all the possible complications of puppies on a small, young girl, especially when you don't know what males could have got to her. (or what size the dog was!) Maybe time to look for another vet? They spey kittens and ferrets, so what is so difficult about puppies?
  6. I just did the iams one and got Shibas second. First... Finnish Spitz! ha ha nope. Those guys are too noisy.
  7. In another thread the online "Dog Breed selector" quizzes came up. I know I've done one or two and the results are often hilariously wrong. Yet people still use them to help choose their future dog. It got me thinking... Let's fill one out! I know I've filled out a quiz or two and ended up with totally different breeds that I know for a fact don't suit . What's a good "breed selector?" For Example a quick google and I found this one. and... apparently I want small long haired terriers. Nope. http://www.pedigree.com.au/dog-breed-information/breed-selector/
  8. I work with a lady who is researching her next dog. She used to have a schnauzer. She was looking at a few breeds, Kerry Blues, Airdales, .. (I forget the others). She likes the larger terriers. I mentioned in passing about the Soft coated wheaten terrier. She googled them and loved what she saw. She told me she Emailed a breeder and was told the pups were $3000. She knows the rarer breeds are more expensive, but she said she really can't afford $3000 for a dog. Thing is, there is a good chance she will just end up buying a dog from the paper because it costs less. Ok, this really has nothing to do with people getting an Oodle. But it does explain why some people shy away from getting a pedigree dog. I'm still working on her, lol. I'm telling her to look for older retired show dogs/rehomes in the breed she wants. Not sure if it will work..
  9. As a kid we had a poodle X silky terrier and a chihuahua X silky terrier. Same dad, apparently he used to do the rounds of the neighbourhood. Both small light brownish fluffy things. Hair needed to be clipped back or it matted terribly (which I did as a kid, with a pair of scissors, because if I didn't the dogs ended up in matted dreads.) Both entire males, of course. My family never desexed the male pets, because they don't have puppies/kittens so not their problem (don't even go there.... I know!!!) The unusual thing about these crosses? Both puppies were "to give away" in the paper. If they were born today, someone would be charging a thousand bucks and slapping a made up name on them....
  10. That is rarely used because everyone forgets it's there.... :)
  11. When Wylie died Loki dug a hole and lived in it for a few weeks. That was his way of coping I guess? Eventually it was taking him out for walks with other friends dogs that helped get in out of his burrow and back into reality again. Obviously this wouldn't work for everyone. My dog is weird....
  12. Pros, cons. There are many. But I can tell you two real life examples to desex a male dog. (After it's old enough.) One, entire dogs like to pee. Yes, training and stuff but some boys love to mark and god dammit THEIR PEE REEKS!!! Two, and I agree this is not the same for everyone, obviously. But I knew someone who had an entire male dog who was a slave to his hormones. He was a whining fretting screaming mess if there was a bitch in heat somewhere in the neighbourhood. He would be frantically trying to escape, digging, whining fretting... a canine basket case. I know, worst case situation but it happens. Hormones... we all have em, dogs and humans and No Willem, it wasn't a training issue. Don't bother. Just... don't.
  13. Also, yes, some Shiba pups have a chubby snout and their tails can look less curled when they are relaxed. Wonder who they stole the photo off? Would be good to let the person know.
  14. Oh yes, forget dogs for a moment, I also lock up the cats. After one tradesman found Flansy living in his tool box, and another poor guy... well, let's just say you should not combine an inquisitive cat(Flansy again) who likes to put his paws in small dark gaps and an electrician who, when crouching down has quite a plumbers crack showing.... it was awkward for all of us...
  15. Not only is the dog locked up, I refuse to have anyone over if I'm not there. I don't trust anyone not to let the cats escape. I had a tradie turn up unexpectedly when I wasn't home. He rang me and said he wasn't game to go into the back yard because one of my dogs was growling at him.Turns out scrawny geriatric Shibas are terrifying to grown men. :D (actually I was shocked, I didn't think Loki had it in him )
  16. Yesssssss , come to the dark side!!!! :D
  17. I have many "wish list" dogs. :D But in most cases I cant house or handle them... Still, I'd love a Shikoku inu....
  18. They are not sooking. Do you have any idea how annoying a constantly barking dog can be!!!
  19. I know she probably isn't Russian (Is she? I have no idea..) but what about Katinka? after Katinka Ingabogovinanana from Zoolandar :D If she is a pain in the butt she can be Katinka the Stinka :D
  20. Nova scotia duck tolling retriever? :D (for some weird reason when I think of Brittanys, I always think of Tollers... I have no idea? they are nothing alike! )
  21. My Shibas get fox, husky, basenji, Dingo ect all the time. I had a guy argue with me at the vet because he "knew they had Dingo in them," he could tell. Once when I was asked what breed they were and I replied "Shiba Inu" I kept getting, "no, but what are they a cross off? I kept telling the lady they were a real breed but she kept says, "yes, but what breeds are they mixed with?" I guess she was used to so many designer "breeds" with owners insisting their cross was a "breed" ? Every one used to think Loki was a girl. ( He is pretty slight for a Shiba ) I'd constantly get "are they brother and sister?" or "Isn't she pretty" Now that he is a million years old I just get "Oh isn't he old!"
  22. One of my sisters named her cat Kibah after the same horse!
