  1. We had pure bread rotti pups in the paper here a while ago.
  2. I am guilty of being sick of being asked what breed my dogs were and told someone they were Ukrainian marmot hounds.....
  3. Two shibas here so obviously I get fox or dingo all the time. In fact I have been told several times my dogs have dingo in them because I'm wrong and the person telling me knows they do.... Aside from that I get basenji all the time, husky or samoyed and once was asked if they were borzois! (I think the person meant basenjis, at least I HOPE they did!)
  4. I was walking my dogs the other day (both shiba ) and we came across a lady walking a pug. A very cute pug who I wanted to steal but thats beside the point.... She stopped and asked what my dogs were. I told her and she immediately said "so they are a cross of what? " I told her a bit about shibas and she mentioned she had never heard or seen one of them. What my impression of the whole meeting was that this lady has a pure bred dog, has seen way too many oodlewhatsits with fancy names and assumed mine were yet another of a long line of designer mixes. She was probably sick of explaining the same things that have been mentioned over and over...I wasn't offended at all and it made me think about these things. She could very well be one of you guys! (if she is, can I have your pug? ) Which is a darn sight better than the woman I once met walking a pair of white fluffy whatsits who asked me if I my dogs were desexed because she would love to introduce their lovely red colour into her "lines"
  5. Loki will lie upside down in Summer "working on his tan" He sheds so much he has very thin hair and bald patches on his belly and it goes from it's normal Winter Pinky white with black spots to a dark purple colour. Please tell me this is normal??? He has cooler areas to sleep but he would rather be spreadeagled on the hot concrete.
  6. My two will kill anything small and feathery or fluffy if given a chance. You might not be too popular with the neieghbours if your dog got out and killed their chickens, rabbits ect.
  7. *puts hand up* My first dog was a shiba. Now I have two of them. Yes, they are stubborn and a pain in the butt to train and you can never trust them off leash. However they are awesome like dogs and a big dog in their own minds at least. If a person was to read up all the cons about them and be aware I see no reason why they cant be a first dog. I was lucky the breeder picked a soft less challeging boy for my first. They are not the kind of dog to just stick in the back yard and forget (they will remind you very quickly of their existence!) and you do have to watch them with other dogs and never let them get dog aggressive. Cons can be found in lots of breeds. Stubborn, so are some other spitz High prey drive, so do some terriers Can be dominant with other dogs, so can staffords The SCREAAAAAM! only sometimes, not as annoying as a contstant yappy little bark. Poor recall, once again, other spitz, some hounds. The biggest problem is spoiling them. They look so damn cute but if you let them walk over you then you have a monster...
  8. I like fireworks. Grew up in Darwin and firecracker night was a highlight of the year. However I really think they should be banned to the general public (too many bogans and horror stories). I think there is a place for public shows but they really do need better warnings. A small mention in a paper is not fair warning to me. I have a dog that goes nuts, I know this. I love fire works. Let me know and I'll make sure he is ok.
  9. Last night I was coming home saw fireworks in a park near my house. Beauiful show, obviously professional. I came home to a frantic, frothing, fretting shiba on my doorstep who had jumped the unjumpable backyard fence and had thankfully decided to stay within the yard. I have no idea what the fireworks were for but a bit of warning and I would have put the little guy inside
  10. Wolves? really? More likely ferals or wolf dog crosses surely?
  11. Wylie is a licker. No such luck training it out of him either. He would just like the air until he forgot he wasn't allowed and then try and lick you again. However, he is 6 now an some ideas are slowly seeping into his teeny brain and he is actually remembering things a little.
  12. I read a little article in the paper about 3 zebras that escaped off a ranch (in America?) and were shot because they went onto other peoples land and chased their horses. So, yes in a way.
  13. Um why not? They are a penguin guard not a nightclub bouncer. As long as you can activley watch the penguins who cares the age. It doesn't matter how old you are, drunken idiots would still have reacted like this. No one should be pushed over no matter what age.
  14. Why does he have to have pug in him at all? Cant it be the result of an accident or just a freak in development?
  15. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13...hit-ladies.html Awwww! Look at him
  16. My pets have always been mine. Right from the start. But I'm a cynical twisted old thing who always keeps in mind that forever is only a thing that happens while you are in love. If I split up, pets go with me. I havent been in the situation where the ex can provide more of a home simply because I don't let it happen. After a break up with the grumpy old man many years ago I got my cat and dog, he kept his dog. I bought a friend for mine because he hated being alone. of course then the ex got a new girlfriend who hated dogs and he dumped his dog on me telling me to find him a home of he gets put down. Sadly his dog ended up at the RSPCA and was put down. No one wanted GSP x that leaps 6 foot fences and have no training what so ever If you can give your pets a home then do it. If you have to split them, they will be ok. Or you will have to get a friend for the one you left. I have just entered a new relationship and there is no question who owns the pets. Should we get another together it will belong to one of us. We might share it, but at the end of the day it will live with who bought it.
  17. Ok. I read through the thread and maybe I missed stuff? . So can someone please sum up the whole thing? What is it and why buy it. Why is it different to any old dog coat? I ask because I have a mad shiba freaking out every time there is a storm, fireworks, loud machinery, negative feng shui, whatever......
  18. Dammit. I'm so insignificant and boring I got nothing. Someone wanna make up a rumour about me? Make it snazzy and fun.
  19. Was a bit of a scary week for me. I got home on Monday to find a card on my door from the council Regulations officer with a message on the back saying please ring to discuss your dogs! Naturally I freaked out. With Lokis on going issues I was suprised it took so long. He has been escaping again after a few months of peace (long story some may remember) So I figured he had annoyed someone somehow. So I called back the next morning only to be told the guy was on a training course that day and call back on Wednesday. You would think he would mention that on his card... So a frantic day later he rang me before I got a chance too. I had been thinking all kinds of bad things. They were barking? Someone complained about him getting out? Loki looks too skinny and ratty? (shedding) So they guy tells me he had received a complaint about my dogs. Then went on to say he didnt think it was much of a complaint and not to worry. Apparently someone rang to say they had been barking all day long on Monday. My dogs are not barkers. They bark if there is something there, not if they are bored. I explained that and he said they have no problem with that. He turned up to check out the complaint and the pair were sitting quietly without the slightest noise. He even went up and patted my "miniature akitas" (lol) and the little buggers didnt even bark at him. Some guard dogs... Turns out the people across the road are doing roof repairs and my dogs thought the people on the roof were a bit creepy. Thankfully they got bored which is good because the guys were there for three days.... So the council guy was not worried at all and told me to disregard the complaint. He did let on by letting me read between the lines who it was who rang to complaint. It was my neighbour who is an elderly almost bed ridden lady. I have talked to her before because I worry about the yodelling screams I get when I get home. She always said she had no problem with my dogs because they made her feel safer as she knew they only bark if there is a reason. Obviously they just pushed her over the edge that day. Barking dogs can drive you mad so I do understand her getting annoyed. So there was my first and hopefully only complaint about the pair of nutters I'm not sure what to do now. I would give her an apology gift or something but I dont think I should let on that I knew it was her. The council guy didnt tell me outright but hinted enough for me to get it. Thank goodness they guys were nice and quiet when he came round. It is strage they didn't bark at him but hey, it worked in my favour. The poor guy thinks they are well behaved or something?
  20. Thank you 2psinapod. I was waiting for someone to post new dog photos. The discussions above are interesting but not what I want to wade through in here....
