  1. I spent the morning at the Million paws walk playing Guess the breeds :D (Waaay too many oodles so I didn't bother with them)
  2. My local paper recently advertised "Rare breed" Burmengals. Yes, Bengal cross burmese(yes, cats but still) Nice to see the stupid name mashing is crossing into other animals. Sigh....
  3. Or better yet, take the middle ground and get a shiba :D
  4. There were no shnoodles ect because back then cross breeds were given away, not given a catchy name and sold for huge emounts of money......
  5. Whould leaving a large portion of the hindquarters help in balance as well? Weight distribution or something?
  6. Tonight reminded me that I have a huge problem... It used to be that I couldn't feed them anything special or any treats without Loki complaining... But no, it is anything. He isn't hungry but will chuck a big verbal tanty if Wylie so much as breathes any where near his food. Feeding them seperatly has helped but now Loki wont eat all his food, even fed apart. He is lean to begin with but now has dropped a bit of weight. I am taking him to the vets to see if it may be a tooth issue. I am now grasping at straws but if he wont eat what ever is offered, no matter how much he seems to want it then it is the first step I can take. He is just not eating. I will talk to the vet about the agro issues. He (the vet) is reluctant to drug up a dog as he feels it is an excuse to cover bad training. Sadly Loki is getting worse no matter what I do. I am looking at having them in at night. It wont solve much but it will stop Loki's panic attacks during the night. The slightest sound of a car back firing or a loud bang sends him franticly charging the fence and he ends up either jumping bigger and better "dog proof " heights or rubbing and gouging his face raw in the process. I cant help during the day apart from chaining him( with a non tangle line that he cant choke himself on, best I can do so far) but maybe I can possibly bring him indoors rather than that temporary solution. My little boy is now 9. ( :D ) and for his breed he isn't old at all. I want another 9 years out of him without all his stress. Wylie, the other dog has only marked indoors a couple of times. He knows it isnt allowed but every now and then if I and he relax he will cock his leg. I usually catch it before he lets go and he stops. I dont think it is learned behaviour yet? Thats why I'm hoping I can stop him getting into it. Not sure if it is marking because it always seems so absent minded rather than deliberate marking.
  7. I remember back in high school one day a boy called another boy in class a faggot. The teacher overheard and suddenly spoke up loudly " I BEG your pardon? are you saying this boy is a bundle of sticks!? " I dont think anyone except me got the joke:o (not grammar but still)
  8. Well.... dont all jump in at once... Ok, My post was all over the place and I apologise. But I am starting to stress here. I have lived in one place for many years. I talk to my neighbour and all was well. But now one of them is ringing the council to complain about my dogs. She has done it three times, and all three times there was a reason they were barking and the council guy who came out has told her this. But I'm scared she might bait my dogs. I can only go on a here say rumour from a guy next door to her... Basically, my dogs are not barking, even when I'm not home unless they have reason to. She is ringing up when ever they are which is only if there is something outside my house. I have asked around, everyone agrees. I want to avoid all future problems with this neighbour and try to bring my dogs indoors. I have two dogs, one was housebroken, the other not. Loki is the source of many issues and keeping him in will help. He was the one who grew up as an inside dog but now wont stand for it. Poops indoors and chews door frames until you let him out. Wylie cant be left outdoors so if I bring one in, I need the other. Can desexing an entire dog stop him marking indoors? Or can somebody give me some tips to stop him? How do I train two older dogs? Any tips? I need to be able to bring them indoors in case the problem with my neighbour gets worse.
  9. I'm assuming someone will chime in about it's how they are treated and loaded up on trucks to be killed (stress) and then how they are killed. We might not agree dogs are food and yes, some are killed in horrific ways. Yet Some people eat dog. Sad but true. At the end of the day its how they are raised and killed that might be the issue , not that they are. Looking at the photos, they all look the same. Like cattle trucked for slaughter. We might not agree with it but are we stopping every livestock transport truck? Yes, we apparently have better treatment of our food animals.... or do we?????????? Looking at those photos I cant see any difference in animals if someone stopped a cattle truck here in Aus. Truckload of animals sent to slaughter? check. Packed into little cages? check. I am not agreeing or disagreeing with this issue. I just think if we have some issues, we need to look at our own food practises.
  10. They all have the same look/size. If they were pets stolen from owners wouldn't there be some variety? Or would they only be stealing dogs with a certain look/ body shape that is most sought after for eating. The sameness off them all looks to me like they have come from a breeding farm to be eaten.? Like cattle.?
  11. Lately he is starting to worry me. If I cant fix the problem then I'm at aloss!
  12. Well, my boys one of my boys have issues, that are getting worse. Seriously worse. Now Loki (with a possible anxiety disorder) is chucking a tanty more often and aimed at Wylie. It is getting beyond certain issues and now I need to take firmer steps. Fast forward through the whole thing and I'm managing him. He is now getting really food posssive and growling enough to put a tasmanian devil to shame everytime Wylie goes near his food. I separate them now at dinner and we still have a fight over nothing... I mean nothing. Loki has started growling at Wylie if he moves into the backdoor area. I need tips on housebreaking dogs inside. Loki was housebroken when I got him. Spent a few years inside with another dog, but then I moved and now he hates being inside. Wylie has never been an indoor dog, is not desexed and likes to pee on things. So, I am running out of options. we were going great until recently. So, how do I go about housetraining a pair of old dogs. Do I need to crate train them and if so, a crate each? The other issue, if I want to house train Wylie, will desexing him help? I have planned to get him done but never had the time,( stuff , and that, was going to be a show dog, but not, forward me to the desexing thread!) but more to the point, will getting him fixed help with his marking indoors? If not, or if so, I need some help to get them both ok inside. I am possibbly needing to bring both my dogs inside over night and can someone help me with breaking old house scared dogs in. Will getting Wylie desexed ( I am getting it done anyway) make a difference in his stinky marking? I posted about Loki a year back. He has issues and the vet and I am treating them. I am giving him a bit longer to work on some and recording everything about it before I go looking for overseas help. He is pretending the world likes him this week, so hopefully that will help... Loki has issues............. Please, PM if you can help. For tha last year I could manage it but it might be getting worse!
  13. I was wondering, or I had a theory about docked breeds. Well, about dobes and rotties, not other breeds. My theory is from seeing undocked examples about and talking to people who see them, so not scientific at all.... Dobes and rotties are two breeds traditionially with docked tails and also breeds that suffered from the "(sometimes) american macho killer pricked eared killer guard dog syndrome." As in, it is shown as big and sleek and scary and a killer. Yet since docking was bought in to Australia I have met people who are not scared by such dogs. It is like their evil vindictive killer viciousness (you get what I mean) is tied up in their tail. Any smart looking black and tan guard breed must be a killer... Somehow the tail seems to soften the look. I know it's stupid and only my experiance but I keep meeting people who hate and fear a cropped tailed doberman or rottweiler yet soften towards those with a tail. Does having a tail make them so less fearsome? and why dont german shepherds get the same? Is that because they have nothing about their looks to "soften" their rep? I think it might be about changing the rep of such breeds as they are shown on film? Would like to hear from anyone who has seen this. I might just be mad...!
  14. One of my held in reserve names for my next shiba is Wasarbi! However I really want a frenchie one day and I'm really wanting to call it Gecko....
  15. I'm still mentally paying for mine..... Although when I was looking for my first one I found breeders who were cheaper but I didn't have any "feeling" for them. It seemed all business.
  16. Link this thread up with the other one about reasons to desex
  17. I got to cuddle Scooter! and pat his other fuzzy lil siblings! (love that teeny Mikey(that right?) He is a wiggler!
  18. Anyone have or know of a contact for Lisa Hoggan from Sekaiichi shibas? Last I heard she was getting out of breeding/showing, and that was a few years ago.
  19. This sums up everything I have tried to say about my dog and offlead dogs. I have a breed known for being dog aggressive. Sure, he is a little guy and not one of the cliched " big bad breeds" but he could be a nasty little beast if I let him. The amount of people with off lead dogs that rush up to mine trailing an owner who says "its ok, he is friendly..." My dog has never attacked a dog before but damn he would like to! Only reason he hasnt is that I am aware of him and try to avoid any conflict. Guess what? after years of it I get angry and defensive as soon as I see an off lead dog. It becomes second nature to defend your dogs reputation from those who cant care less about their dogs.
  20. Wasn't Ingen the name of the company that cloned dinosaurs in Jurassic Park!
  21. What, those snippy, yappy highly strung dogs?
  22. I bought a dog on main register to show and never did for various reasons. I was looking for a showable pup and got one but sadly circumstances didn't work out (not because of the dog) So I have a pet on main. It happens more often than you think. I'm guessing there are a few people that buy a dog with intent to show and dont. Now I look at him and he is a very handsome boy. Spitting image of his dad (who was a grand champion if I recall?) with a "look at me, damn I'm gorgeous" attitude. I think he is a great specimen of the breed and wish I had shown him. I thought about breeding him but then thought I think he is awesome but I am not a breeder or shower. He looks great to me but I cant breed from him just because I think he is a great example. There were never any breeders local to get him looked over so I decided it wasn't the right thing to do. He may very well be the best shiba ever bred but I'm happy for that to be my personal opinion. Without an expert looking him over and agreeing, that is how it will stay. I never thought about breeding him without showing or some kind of assessment first. As cute as puppies are I figure my boy is special and I dont need to put dozens of badly bred versions of him out there just to prove he is an awesome boy. Also, as a pet I am glad I dont have to deal with the issues of a stud boy. Someone mentioned ( in the breeders section? ) about how the boys can change personality after they have been used at stud? It is worth reading.
  23. Strangely enough, most people I speak to (friends or work) who get a puppy are totally unaware. I mention the risks of taking them out into public areas and they say "Oh he/she is vaccinated" They assume that once it is done the pet is instantly immune to all harm. I had a hard time recently telling a friend that just because their pup was vaccinated from parvo a week ago doesn't mean it will never get it.
